Hi,

Remember Rob Gell's comments re the grasslands regenereation successfully undertaken by Paul Gibson-Roy? It is proving very successful and could become a major way to manage some of our seriously degraded 'grasslands' in the future (as well as assisting with the proposed reserves, substantial sections of which are likely to benefit from such a program).

Bernie has just circulated the link below so you can check on the website what was being discussed (Colleen Miller has also been in touch with Paul Gibson Roy over this process if you want to follow it up).

Cheers,

Harry

THIS IS A PRIVATE REPORT

Council  staff: At some stage please ensure VEAC members see the impressive and beautiful maps drafted by the MMBW in the early 1930s showing the Board’s vision for Melbourne and its parks! The report focussed on the open-space opportunities afforded by Melbourne’s network of urban streams and floodplains. This is still a great way to approach urban land-use. *

Two vignettes:

·         Fairmount Park in Philadelphia covers +3700 hectares (+9600 acres), one-tenth of the city

·         In NZ, Auckland Regional Council (like a CMA but with social, planning, park management and transport portfolios too) buys farmland on the open market to create new parks, combining revegetation, open grassland sometimes remaining under grazing/cropping regimes, and other uses such as camping, farm-zoos, wildlife habitat, sports facilities and perhaps commercial activities – there are strong links to Maori and migrant communities

This is my simple proposition: if Melbourne is to have five million people by say 2040, we should buy 2-3000 hectares of farmland in our hinterland over the next twenty years – farm properties that can be converted to urban parks for passive and active recreation. I think Gellibrand Hill is a good example of this process.

Ideally properties purchased should be alongside streams, and incorporate Koorie and interesting geological features, remnants of indigenous vegetation , especially basaltic escarpments, and historic buildings. They ought to be near railway stations if possible.

Moreover, instead of residential and mindless commercial redevelopments on former industrial land, we should be looking at some of these areas for the same purposes!

Efforts should be made to links these parks with cycle, walking and equestrian tracks to the central city.

There is a special case to be made for any public land carrying basaltic escarpment vegetation. These slopes can rarely be used for purposes other than conservation – grazing is difficult, weeds prevail and engineering is challenging. But this land often carries excellent, even beguiling, remnants of indigenous vegetation. We should be looking at a broad program here of reservation and restoration to create new networks across greater Melbourne combining conservation and passive recreation.

Go to Sydenham Park, west of Keilor, to see how this land-class can be rejuvenated.

Despite everything we hear about global crises, we are a wealthy community and should be able to do this easily, shrewdly looking for supplementary philanthropic and community support.

I must end with my usual rail against Parks Victoria: it does great work but it doesn’t manage volunteers well, and doesn’t look far enough outside its boundaries. That’s been my experience, anyway.

Dear All,

(apologies if you're already aware of this)

It seems that a shift in thinking on provenance issues and seed collection
of indigenous plants may be occurring.

Researchers at CSIRO have in recent times been reviewing past practice
which recommended using seed/plant propagules from as close as possible to
the planting site. The emerging picture as I understand it is that greater
emphasis should in most cases be placed on getting 'healthy' seed rather
than being preoccupied with getting 'local seed'. That is, seed collection
should focus foremost on the capture high quality and genetically diverse
seed.

The issue is discussed briefly on the FloraBank website (
http://www.florabank.org.au/default.asp?V_DOC_ID=1018 - see today's news
item), and Florabank suggest they are likely to issue updated guidelines in
the future.

The research behind the new ideas is published in this article: "Seed
supply for broadscale restoration: maximising evolutionary potential"
(2008) LM Broadhurst, A Lowe, DJ Coates, SA Cunningham, MMcDonald, PA Vesk,
C Yates. Evolutionary Applications 1: 587-597., which is currently

Hi,

The Herald-Sun poll is currently showing about 75% in favour of another dam for Melbourne's water. If you agree that such a dam would endanger our already fragile rivers without effectively increasing water supplies (given both existing low flows alongside drought and climate change) please take a few minutes to register your vote.

Urgent action: say no to more dams!

Today's Herald Sun newspaper poll asks 'Should the State Government build new dams to boost water supply?’ Environment Victoria's Healthy Rivers Campaign says NO!

You can vote now, via the Herald Sun website .........click here

Dams are no solution to our water crisis. Dams destroy rivers, cost billions of dollars and don’t save water. We need to be smarter in the way we use water and look for fresh solutions, instead of resurrecting old ideas.

Hi everyone,

I am interested to know if anyone is interested in buying large
amounts of native grass seed grown from seed sourced from the basalt
plains to the north and west of Melbourne.

We are about to sow our first crops this season to supply a client
who will be involved in grassland offsets, but would like to get an
idea if there is more demand.

We presently have a few different species of native grass seed
collected from Tarneit to Yan Yean that will be used to start our
seed production area in Keilor. We hope to be able to deliver modest
amounts of certified seed in the next year or two, but it would be
very useful to know if any of the Local, State or other organizations
involved with grasslands on the basalt plains are interested in
purchasing particular species, and if so what sort of quantities
might be needed.

Any feedback would be appreciated, and we intend to conduct a field
day for all interested parties in a year or so when there is a crop
to look at.

Regards

Chris Findlay

Hello all.

Just to advise that this plant is presently being sold at a major retail hardware chain in Victoria. It looks so similar to Serrated Tussock (Nasella trichotoma) that experienced weed sprayers were confused by it. It has the look, a serrated feel, cylindrical cross section, similar roots, and appears to have a membranous ligule. It is being referred to the authorities here to see if any action needs to be taken. Some of our local plant experts would like to see much stricter controls on plants so closely related to and so hard to tell apart from serious weeds of national significance.

It is described on the net as being similar to Stipa tenuissima but more robust.  Anyone had any dealings with it in Victoria or even Australia?

Subject: EcoAlert - A new webpage monitoring service for the Natural
Resource Management Industry

Dear Jason,

I am pleased to announce the release of an innovative product that will
be invaluable to anyone involved in the Natural Resource Management
Industry. The product is called EcoAlert and is an email alert service
that provides you with a regular update of changes to key webpages
relevant to the natural resource management industry - information that
is integral to the operation of your business.

As you would know, the problem with staying up-to-date is how to monitor
all the webpages that could have information that you require in an
efficient and timely manner, especially when most of these pages are
updated infrequently. You can spend hours a week checking numerous
relevant sites in order to be confident that you are up-to-date with no
real net value for your business. EcoAlert is a cost effective and
simple solution to this problem. Depending on your preference, an email
is received in your email inbox on a daily, weekly or monthly basis,
outlining the changes to the webpage content.

EcoAlert monitors hundreds of webpages relevant to natural resource
management in Australia, including pages on legislation, policy,
strategies & plans, official survey methodology, conservation lists,
pest or weed lists, public comment, what's new and publications both at
the state and federal level. A complete list of pages relevant to your
subscriptions can be provided on request.

Please read the attached promotional flier to learn more about this
innovative product and subscribe today to take advantage of the current
discounted rates. The application form is on the second page of the
flier - this form can be easily printed and sent by mail to Botanicus
Australia Pty Ltd with payment. Alternative, you may wish to pay
electronically, in which case the attached text-based application form
can be completed and emailed to sales@....

If you are aware of any other people you think may find this product of
use, please feel free to forward this email to them for consideration.

Cheers Simon

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN AUSTRALIA DID NOT PURCHASE A
DROP OF PETROL FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL
COMPANIES.

THEREFORE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 22nd HAS BEEN FORMALLY
DECLARED 'STICK IT UP THEIR ASS DAY' AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT
BUY A SINGLE DROP OF PETROL THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF
YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WAITING FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE
PRICES ? IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND
CONTROL IN PRICES THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED LONG AGO?

THE PRICES JUST KEEP GOING UP AND WE NEED TO STOP IT
PETROL PRICES ARE CAUSING OTHER EFFECTS; AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR
PRICES, AS ARE TRUCKING COMPANIES . THIS INCREASES PRICES ON
EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING SUPPLIES MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY,WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND

Subject: Doug McKenzie Mohr - Fostering Sustainable Behaviour

Hi all,

Hope 2008 is off to a good start for you.

Those of you that are interested in behaviour change for sustainability may be very interested in the upcoming Doug McKenzie Mohr visit to Australia.  DSE has arranged an introductory workshop with Doug for staff on Jan 17th.  I have checked with the organisers, and it is ok for external people to come along too (DSE will invoice you).  See invite below for details on RSVP'ing. RSVP's are due tomorrow, so get in quick!  My apologies for the short notice.

Cheers
-Georgia

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew about courses that run in N.S.W regarding flora
or fauna
surveying techniques.

Thanks

Hello all   (sorry if you get this more than once)

I am writing to you all to inform you I have taken an opportunity of a one year secondment to become the Manager of the Sustainable Environment Department at Hume City Council. This will mean I will no longer be directly involved in Tree and Bushland management at Hume. In the short term Michael Leers will be managing the Tree area and Paul Grimes will be looking after the Natural Landscape Management Team.

I would like to thank all the people who have helped me achieve many things since starting in my Open Space Coordinator Role at Hume back in 2002. I think I have made a difference to the way we manage trees and our conservation reserves and I am sure this important work will continue in my absence. My new role will be more strategic and will hopefully improve the environmental performance of Council and the Local Community. I will still work with many of you in a different role and with a tie and shirt (maybe even a suit). I am still working for Hume City Council and will still have interest in all the works you will be continuing with.

Again thanks and my new contact details are set out in the auto signature below. Note by mobile and desk number have changed and I will be on the 5th floor of the new office in Broadmeadows. Please come visit when you get a chance and admire the view.

Have a great day

I am excited !!!!!

From next week
