I believe the Concert Programme still broadcast with no compression
whatsoever.
Right from the studio through the digital transmission path they have
no compression.
Hence they sound a little quieter at times, but the dyanmic range is
higher and arguably more 'Hi-Fi'

Well thats a good deal for two cents..
> 192Kbps employs the joint stereo encoding method, not independent
bandwidth for each channel like 224, 256 and 320Kbps (like a cd
player or even cassette tape record).
thats intruiging..
If there's to much stereo activity like a phase effect, it pushes the
encoder to use only its limited stereo' difference' tracks, hence it
simply runs out of space to make it sound like a standard 192 file
and fails to encode anywhere near cd quality, I've even found this to
happen in Fraunhofer's engine.
Having a fine ear, I monitor mp3 quality by listening rather than the
math or anything else. Using a program like Cool Edit Pro, I have a
hotkey setup to quickly mix the tracks to create what is fondly known
as Vocal Cut, or voice stripper. This uses the L + -R (for left),
and -L + R-inverted (for right), thus creating the third speaker in a
3.1 setup.
Anything at 128 sounds like its 'underwater', at 160 you can hear it
on the tops, and snare hits, and at 192 or above - its exactly like
CD. This is why I was bemused with such a high setting for mp3. I
encode either with LAME or Cool Edit Pro. Pro Tools uses the german
mp3 codec like Cool Edit, so there is no apparent difference.
I only encode mp3 as stereo, not joint or ms stereo.
However, if you are operating on LPFM - it's really pointless to go
overboard. I do not see an opportunity for microbroadcasters to use a
DAB platform in the near or distant future - and considering the
trend of over-population of the guardband, it really is pointless to
encode at the extreme higher end - just to broadcast a clean
uncompressed signal, that gets RF interference from other LP
stations, taxis and the like..
> When you hear a cd played on-air through analogue or high-end
digital audio processors, there's something about how 'clean' and
open it sounds that simply leaves everyone else on the dial sounding
what a lot of people now deam to be a bad term, 'digital'.
As for full powered stations - if they could all broadcast
uncompressed wave, that would be wonderful. More FM Auckland as we
know are the only ones still using CD live to air. Bless em.
