George is certainly a commercial station (they are full-power or near here
in Auckland, using one of the Maori frequencies).
However there is no rule in the GURL which says that a LPFM station has to
be non-commercial.
UpFM has operated in Auckland for quite some time now as a commercial
station, as does the new BaseFM now. (I beleive)
Some of us try and get sponsors and things to help cover expenses which
might well make us 'commercial' too I guess.
Several people have called for the GURL to specify non-commercial which is
all well and good, as long as there is somewhere for the semi-commercial,
the small commercial, (or even just the stations who want to be able to
provide more than a pc and winamp) stations to go without having to shell
out $6.5million for a frequency.
I would love to remain 100% commercial free on Twisted, but as you
mentioned in a previous email, one of our goals is providing new and
upcoming dj's and jocks with a place to get on air where they otherwise
wouldn't be able to... and unfortunately that takes money.
