Re: [LPFM] Aerials

Do you not have a SWR meter?  If it's popping transistors then it must be no good, or you have a bad connection.  I can't answer your question, however.  I know a roof can help bounce more of the signal in a horizontal direction which can help, but height is more important when it comes to VHF.

For simplicity and ease of installation I just use dipoles.  I know the gain is not as good as a 5/8 wave but they are simple to tack on to any mast and the SWR never changes.

Regards,
Ross.

Subject: [LPFM] Aerials

Hi just to change the subject a technical ?

I know that higher = better but is there a maximum above the mounting point
that a 5/8 wave aerial will work?
I ask because I have been experimenting with raising my aerial on a pole.
When it is placed on it's usual hockey stick appox 4' above a metal roof all
is fine.
If I raise it to about 20' it will go fine, get a bit better range but
enevtably pop goes another difficult to get 2sc1947
Same tx, coax just different heights.
Does the aerial need the metal roof for grounding?
Any thoughts?

Maurice

A 5/8 antenna definitely NEEDS a ground plane to work. 1/4 wave and 5/8 are essentially a radiating element above a reflective surface. The reflective surface...

I made my own 1/4 wave ground planes as a teenager for CB radio. What you can do is string 4 sets of wires out at a roughly 45 degree angle from the top of...

If you don't know, an isolator is a piece of ceramic (I think) with a hole at each end for tying wires to. You can use anything strong that doesn't conduct...

Hello Dave I think Jochen means a GOOD connection from the reflecting roof to to outside braid of the coax feeder at the point where it connects on to the...

hi group, 2sc1947 rf transistors are too expensive to run into a poor swr antenna, quick answer is to tune as best as you can, then use an antenna tuner in the...

It means that the reflective surface (ie the roof) should be electrically connected to the ground connection of the aerial. When I did RT aerials, we would...
