I guess the other way to look at it is:
You are not allowed to legally "format shift".
SO....
Buy a cheap fm transmitter (even if it is one of those cheap jobs you would plug into your sound card to play on your local radio tuner). Get an Apra and RIANZ license - then you are legally allowed to have all the music you want on your home pc. All for the cost of a few 100 bucks to be legal.
I know i'm being tongue in cheek here ...but.......
To be serious though - music is not free, have to agree with Gavin and Tony.

I have to agree with Tony's point of view below. Even a non-pofit station still has expenses, and apra/ranz should be part of the equation.Because of this, they use music to attract listeners, and thus have operating expenses. Even if radio does sell albums if you want to broadcast music to start with, it's theirs, not yours. You can look for royalty free music, make your own or do talkback or something else, rainz and apra are not holding a gun to the hobbyist saying you're not allowed a station or you must include music or you must run a radio station for a hobby. If you want your microwave oven to work, you pay for electricity. If you want you radio station to broadcast copyight material that belongs to someone else just because you know how to copy and broadcast, you need to pay for the use of it.Also those licenses are needed just do duplicate audio and have it on your PC for automation. Personally I think $100 for the lyrics and $200 for the mechanic side of things is nothing compared to the option of having music on hard disk aswell for broadcast etc... and the option of easily flicking music around between licensed stations without copyright infringments etc... is a great resource. At the end of the day, ignorance can not be regarded as not guilty in a court of law. Otherwise would all say we weren't aware of the road rules if we pranged in to another car and didn't want to pay the fine for not researching the rules before hand.Yes it would be awesome if there was some other scheme for LPFM, although I don't think you need to do time consuming reporting etc... with an LPFM one? but at the end of the day, the record companies are there to sell music, not give it away for use other than private (if paid for in the first place). Some of it I also call double dipping, especially when radio sells, and petrol stations play radio stations and also need another license (tripple dipping). But they own the content, that's all there is to it, they have that legal right to do what they want with their property.Gavin.----- Original Message -----From: Tony KatavichTo: LPFM_Radio@...Sent: Friday, June 30, 2006 1:16 PMSubject: Re: [LPFM] APRA/RIANZ (PPNZ)the fees charged by the apra and rianz are not exorbitant, and even if they were, those organisations set the rules the music licensing. So you can either follow the rules by paying what they ask in order to legally operate your LPFM station, or alternatively refuse to pay, and face the consequences. Moaning about the APRA fee is not unlike complaining to your local power company about the price of electricity. Operating a LPFM station is for many a hobby, and as with most hobbies, there is invariably a cost involved. After all, whether you decide to while away your time talking into a microphone, or by shooting deer, cleaning spouting or crutching sheep, you are going to incur expenses along the way.incidentally Ethan, as you're operating a stream of your station on your website, you ought be paying apra an additional $600 + GST a year for this privilege.

We dont make any money out of this, we are promoting other peoples music. Apra & Rainz is about $350 together each year. This is alot of money, I agree APRA need to rethink there pricing
Aparantly they bill in september, they have time to change it.
