One must wonder what your "indoor" aerial consists of. If it's not a properly matched aerial you risk damaging your transmitter. With a proper outside aerial like a folded dipole you should get a few kilometres, depending on the terrain. Even up to 10 K if its clear. There is no hard and fast rule as there are so many variables.
I have heard my signals originating from Nelson city, on the causeway onto Motueka which is a 25k path and not even direct.
