If
you have to rip in MP3 format then choose stereo at 192kb/s or higher. Joint
stereo is a way of sharing bits between the left & right channels.
Generally this allows for more detail to be encoded which makes lower bitrates sound
better, but it can also cause phase distortion if the left & right channels
are slightly out of phase, which sometimes occurs on old recordings, or done purposely
for effect.
MP3
is historically bad for phase distortion. There are much more modern and better
codecs to rip your CD’s in these days. Ogg Vorbis, AAC, etc.
