Hi there!
:-)
I would suggest MPXplay for DOS.
This program is not really for the person who likes using Windows and
clicking a mouse, as it is based entirely in DOS.
It requires either a DOS network access to upload files to the PC, or more
simply(but slightly more expensive), a few CD-R's.
You need to have a reasonable-to-advanced knowledge of DOS and the
command-prompt, or access to someone who does!!!
Nevertheless, do not allow the DOS thing to put you off, before you have
looked at the features of this program.
What I like about it:
- It is FREEWARE!!!
- It is not Windows!!!
- It requires no Windows!!!
- It is very small (about 300k to download)
- It is super quick to execute (from boot-up to playing, less then 5 seconds
on P75...(including a CD-ROM driver!))
- It is very fast
- It is very efficent (about 16% CPU usage on P166 playing 128kbps MP3 file,
about 26% with same file on a P100)
- It is very flexable, and configurable.
- It is oh-so stable and reliable.
- Needs only a minimum of a P75 with 8MB of RAM
- Will autodetect any of the common ISA bus sound-cards
I use it on my station, and the only down time, is when I need to stop the
program, while I upload new MP3 music. I transfer the files via CD, as this
allows me to then store the playlist CD in the archive as a backup.
My station PC is only a P100 with 16MB of RAM.
No soundcard drivers required for DOS, so long as you use the common ESS or
SB16 type ISA cards - insert the card into the m/board, and crank up
MPXplay, and you're up and running...
The program has proved it's stabilty and reliablity in a couple of
situations. One of which, was started in November last year, and there has
not been ONE SINGLE CRASH YET...
Try this with Windoze - especially with the likes of a P75 and 8MB of RAM!!!!
I build custom keyboards for these systems, to make driving them easier -
they are a colour coded keypad mockup, attempting to simulate the controls
on a studio deck.
