Regarding management of LP spectrum, I agree with Matt.

A register of LP users at Spectrum Management would suffice - as we all
pretty much manage ourselves mainly through this forum.
It would be especialy helpful for APRA, PPL and any other parties to know
this also, so they can keep tabs on new stations who may try to broadcast
music without adhering to the rules of royalties - especially NZ artists.
You never know - someone may want to invest in your idea!! They have got to
be able to get hold of you.

I'd say its equally our responsibility to question other users (probably a
lot more after Dubbers interview the other night) about their transmittions,
compliance, APRA etc, as it would be for Spectrum Management, so that our
spot on the dial is considered when decisions are made about new users
choosing frequencies, or making sure they stick to the rules.

I have not seen the Dubber interview yet, but Im getting the impression he
was very casual in his approach, and made it look like another faucet now
availble at the 'juniors disposal' - like Video Editing was once only a job
for professional studio, now we can do it on a home PC.
I will email him and get his thoughts on the interview.

R.

Hi Ross,
Thanks very much for copying the clip on TV re the LPFM interview. I did not know that it was on and have now been able to see it.

Let's hope that too many will use the garage or spare room as suggested, and ruin what is now a good thing. Isn't it high time for a bit more regulations over this? I'm sure that all of us would not mind a small fee to keep things more under control and well policed.

I'm not certain that a 'fee' will help keep things regulated.

As has been shown with recent actions against a certain ethnic Auckland
LPFM station/network, having money does not guarantee any degree of
responsibility.

While regulation would make life easier on the existing broadcasters, it
would make it MUCH harder for any new ones to start up, and that ability
to just start a station is what makes the guardband cool in my opinion.

LPFM is pretty much already a 'first in, first served' situation, but
given the small coverage areas, regulating who has a right to transmit
where could be a nightmare, especially in areas where two adjacent
transmitters overlap slightly.

IMHO, the most valuable and viable thing would be a centralised registry
of all LPFM broadcasters contact details, perhaps maintained officially by
the MED or something...

That way at least when someone starts interfering with you, you can find
out who they are and talk to them about options for reducing the problem.

In Auckland at least we're (mostly) blessed by the fact that the LPFM'ers
are happy enough to talk to each other and work out problems... several
stations have moved around recently to make room for some new ones.

I hear that in Wellington its much more cutthroat, with people
broadcasting over the top of others just to annoy them in some cases.

Ultimately, there IS still room in the Auckland guardbands for new
stations, if people work together to make the most of it.

Futher to my earlier posting today.

If your station has ANY income you have responsibilities to annualy send in returns to the Inland Revenue.

There are many reductions available.

Dear Allison.

1. It is not illegal as long as the royalities are paid on an agreement with the copywrite holders being AMCOS and PPL.

2. Fees substantially vary. You will expect to pay much more if you are transmitting commercials or sponcer messages.

Just watching it now.

That lecturer guy or whoever he is that's being interviewed doesn't
have his facts straight.

No revenue = no royalties?? I don't think so!

As we all know here, APRA = $200/year, PPNZ = $100/year.

Yes I had a good laugh when I watched the news article !Long distance
is possible during high ducting / inversion propogation times of the
year, typically January . Our 92.2 XS FM here in the Manawatu has
been heard as far away as South America but thats also at the bottom
of the band and with 50KW EIRP . With 500mW the free space loss even
for reception in the Northern Pacific is very unlikely . I have
worked into the Northern Territory Australia on the 144 Mhz Amateur
band with 10 watts but the path was only open a matter of minutes .
So 500mw in to Europe and with the same freq being EMPTY in Europe I
would say the possibilty is as close to Zero as you could get !
yes they played the story 3 days early !

But 500MW would probably get everywhere.....

MW = Mega Watt,
500MW = 500 million watts

milliwatt = mW :-)

>>> jmosen@... 30/03/04 >>>
It's kind of hard to imagine a 500 MW station taking advantage of that
kind of skip, also the story was put together in a way that implied
this
was a permanent thing.

I remember as a kid before we had FM here having a great time at
summer
getting stations from Oz such as 2JJJ, and from New Caledonia as well.
On one occasion they were really very solid for a good 48 hours.

The ionosphere needs to be extremely ionised for any skip at VHF frequencies, and even when it does, only a fraction of the signal is reflected, so you need a lot of power.  0.5 watts wouldn't make it back to the ground.  I have heard of VHF TV channel 1 43Mhz at Mt. Te Aroha skipping to Australia & Japan.  I forget the power but it's somewhere between 10 and 50 kilowatts.  Some of the high power FM stations can also be occasionally heard in Australia.

Yes, I was sitting here laughing my head off. What's scary is, my wife,
when I pointed out to her that this was an impossibility said, "well
it's on the news so it must be true". Sheesh!!!

Hi
Did anyone see KFM 106.9 in Karangahape Road on the News?
The story said that their vhf signal is being received in Europe. I
have been in ham radio for 35 years and have never heard of VHF
signals consistently travelling that far. They may be reflected off
meteor scatter but that is only for brief periods. The news item said
that someone over in Europe was re-transmitting it and they had a
large audience in Europe.
Does anybody know the whole story here? It sounds more like an
internet stream is being used.
I suspect it is a case of not getting the whole story!

Duh Not quite!!

George W. Marti obtained an FCC license and built radio station KCLE
in Cleburne, Texas in 1947. His experiences in operating this
business led to an idea for a product needed by him to meet a
broadcasting opportunity by himself and other broadcasters. This
product was a portable VHF transmitter capable of sending high
quality radio programming from a temporarily remote location to a VHF
receiver located at the radio studio. The product developed by Mr.
Marti was called remote pick-up (RPU) And is now referred to as
electronic news gathering (ENG).

After years of product development, Marti Electronics, Inc. was
established in 1960 as a manufacturer of remote pick-up broadcasting
equipment.. Additional products were added to the Marti line of
products to include microwave studio to transmitter links (STL) to
transmit a station's signal from the studio to a remote transmitting
tower.

MARTI Electronics is the world's best known supplier of Remote Pickup
Units (RPU's) for electronic news gathering and Studio-to-Transmitter
Links (STL's) for the commercial radio industry.

For over 50 years MARTI Electronics has provided the radio
broadcasting industry quality and performance and is known as the
Performance Value Leader in the industry.

Marconi invented radio.
Marti gear (short for Marconi) is a transmitter for linking back to a studio,
generally on a radio reporters channel on vhf frequencies, around about 160
mHz. You gotta have a licence to use it.

Cheers for tuning in Richard...

Yeah we had a couple of stuff ups but listening to the tape afterwards it
mostly came accross alright. I don't think the silence went for more than
15 minutes.

It's a pity thats all you heard. We pulled about 150 people I think. It
was a good party.

What's marti gear?

Well, do you ever expect the Herald to go indepth? It's hardly Metro.

Speaking of Fleet, whose ballsup was the live cross the other night?
I tuned in, and heard some goose yelling down the mic, with mixed
distortions of 'yeah, whoah, hahah, oh wow' then silence. More
silence and still more silence. Okaaaay.
It would be helpful to make sure your marti gear (or whatever you
use) works properly, and the MC is able to string a sentence together
for the radio audience.

Did anyone see the radio article in the Canvas section of the Saturday
Herald?
It had a pretty good write up on Fleet FM I reckon. It also made mention
of KFM and the Noise Network that "entrepreneur" John Greet is trying
to set up.
