If you're on domestic ADSL in NZ, then you're upload speed could only be
128Kbps, so the 3.5Mbps downstream won't be that much use to you in that
respect, only the upload speed.

Hey Russ,

I have a D-Link 302, the one's that Xtra sent otu before moving to the newer one's that don't crash from overheating. The 302 can do streaming through them but you have to make a port forward/nat filter/pin hole, whatever you want to call it through it. They were only advertised as modems and not routers, but they do Internet sharing as you mentioned and do allow port forwarding rules to be setup in them.

If you log on to the router (via web page) and go in to WAN, then NAT, and select from the drop down menu Nat Rule Entry rather than Nat Global, then when the rule page comes up press add:

Rule Flavor: RDR
Rule ID: any description ie shoutcast
IF Name: ALL
Protocol: ALL
Local Address From: (the ip of the internal machine running shoutcast)
Local Adddress To: (same as above)
Global Address From: 0.0.0.0
Global Address To: 255.255.255.255
Destination Port From: 8000 I think for shoutcast if on it's default
Destination Port To: 8002 I think for shoutcast if on it's default
Local Port: I I forget now....  It could be the other way around, but this is where you add a port forwarding (RDR = redirect) rule.

Gavin.

Hi Gavin,

Great to see you knocking around too :)

While I'm here - has anyone had easy success with streaming shoutcast/winamp through a d-link broadband modem that is sharing internet connection. I can only see to get it to stream on the local network.

Nope, RS232 data along side of an audio stream to send the data out a serial
port at each end etc.. or at least the receiving end.

Hi Folks,

I was also wanting to find out through a D-Link modem on a 3.5mpbs
speed, how can one stream an online radio through win amp.

I have invested in purchasing the Sam 2 Broadcaster software but need
to find providers I guess for streaming online.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hello Russ,

Use Port forwarding and open Port 8000

Go into the D-Link setup and forward port 8000 to your shoutcast server..

I have just setup streaming for other LPFM station in Kaiapoi.

StereoCoder is an early product from the folks who produce the Airomate
software RDS+Stereo encoder. It is free, so I think your conclusion
is spot on!

D-Link modem? is that one of those Broadband Modems that Xtra were selling in
package from most shops for around $150, that has network outlets for 4
computers using cat5 network cable?

I set up 2 of these in invercargill and had no problems setting them up.... on
the other hand some friends had a D-link broadband modem and had to reset up
the firmware to get rid of all the Xtra internet stuff and make it a normal
d-link broadband modem.

My own station here uses shoutcast etc through a Dynalink/Zyxel Adsl
Router.... and once I configured the firewall rules it works a treat.
One trick I found was in my server room, I accidently placed the adsl filter
in close proximity of the Power pack for the router, and it instantly
developed a 50 Hz hum on my telephone.... at about half the volume of dial
tone. :( Moving it away fixed the problem.

Hi Gavin,

Great to see you knocking around too :)

While I'm here - has anyone had easy success with streaming shoutcast/winamp through a d-link broadband modem that is sharing internet connection. I can only see to get it to stream on the local network.

I should say the CD spine number. I haven't got a spell checker installed yet, I might switch email clients.

Subject: [LPFM] APRA and PNNZ etc...

Maybe you guys can be of mroe help because Apra seem to be 6ft under as far as ever replying to emails, Mark from PPNZ is great though.

Before I rush out and start buying some more CD's to do things the legal way, how exactly do you fill in silly APRA/PPNZ reports. I know PPNZ get what they want from APRA etc... and I know filing in an APRA report is reasonbly easy with the likes of scheduling software, and comparing composers/publishers with APRA's online works search database.

But buggered if I can follow Recording label etc... from CD to CD for PPNZ. Half of them don't clearly indicate what the right recordling label vs marketting, vs publishing actually is. Mak told me that putting the CD's ID number on the spin of the cover is all they need to cross-refernce their database but does apra really appreciate having CD spin numbers rather than Record Label etc...?

Help on this one would be really appreciated. I've never really understood the correct procedure for those forms which has been the biggest distraction from me getting back in to LPFM after my last bigger venture. I had a library of about 1,000 CHR 70/80/90's Linear PCM files (all chart toppers) with all the composer/publisher details but not enough record label details (all sourced from CD's) on my PC from the last venture but for legal reasons I wiped them since I dont' understand the whole radio statisno are allowed to swap music (and since I wasn't paying for a license in the interm I wiped them as you do).

So I'll be going shopping for some orginal (non-hyper compressed best of's) again, But I get a headache everytime someone at apra  (if they ever reply instead of Andrews stupid auto-responders talking about being back in the office in 2003!!!! sometimes) never gives me the correct details and exactly what to fill in since ever CD is hard to figure out.

Surely someone must know the exact correct details for PPNZ to get from CD's etc... Although I have noticed a lot of LPFM stations with downloaded mp3 collections to my dissatisfaction of correctly legal reporting. This just makes sharing music, programming and network streaming a legistical nightmare if the station streaming is reported on an APRA sheet without being licensed themselves.

Gavin.

Sonos II is also free.

BTW, does anyone know of any streaming software (I know it's available via
hardware gear) that can send rs232 data from the serial port in sync with
audio? Or has one yet to be written. I've looked everywhere but can't find
anything with this simple feature, especially when so many automation
systems can be wired up to a serial port for network pulses etc...

Wait for StationPlaylist v4.0 which makes it much easier to use DSP plugins.  It will literally take 2 ticks in Studio's options.  Due out end of May.

Don’t suppose there is a link to making the Sound Solution work with Station Playlist and Ogg streaming without me having to figure it all out which I am far too lazy to do myself  ;)

It almost sounds like you are describing the free Sound Solution Winamp DSP compressor/limiter.

Many Winamp and StationPlaylist broadcasting software users use this plugin.

RMS or Peak based settings, Gated AGC, Independent settings for 5 bands adjusting the ratio, threshold, attach, release, and even has a band gain so you can boost one band over another, like an equalizer.  You can configure different settings for the compressor, expander, and limiter for all 5 bands.  It has adjustable band linking, and a 2 band final limiter with a clipper control, and I believe this is look ahead clipper so no flat top distortion.

It has a 15khz frequency limiter and preemphasis at 50 or 75uS.  But it doesn't have an MPX generator.

But I'm interested in where I can download the Sonos free DSP.  Is it a DirectX DSP?

There's a simple 3 band limiter with agc and pre-emphasis etc.. for lower CPE, 4 band for net radio, and the 5-band where pre-emphasis is done through compressor drive and hf limiting rather than a specific EQ boost, similar to how Aphex orginally implimented Pre-Emphasis in the Dominator II.

Hey Gavin

Regards,
Ross.

The MPX will only operate on a 192KHz sample rate card in order to get (divide the sample rate by two) 96KHz bandwidth out a single channel on the sound card. 96KHz sampling on cards (the majority of 24 bit ones)isn't quite enough either at only 48KHz of audio bandwidth since I think FM is around 53KHz wide.

After John released the first free processor a few days ago I immediately thought of you guys so thought I'd subscribe back up and let you know about it. It's designed though for cards with ASIO drivers, not standard windows WDM drivers etc... This way it reduces latency and controls the cards audio level directly rather than via the windows mixer which can ad some chunkyness to the level controls etc...

It will run on 16bit ASIO drivers in 48KHz mode, which just offers normal audio bandwidth processing without the MPX feature. I don't think Sonos II is a directx plugin. The older MBL4 plugin for sonos also came as a directx plug-in, however the newer Sonos II is a stand alone application (server and tcp/ip client) which can also encode aac and mp2 etc... to a shoutcast server. BTW, if you're PC's not grunty enough or you don't have a sound card etc.. to use Sonos II, download the older Sonos programme (which doesn't come with multiband anymore) but it does have a simple wideband AGC and limiter etc.. with pre-emphasis processing if you ever need a basic processor.

Yes I've had a look at sound solution a few times, however I find it very tricky to get the exact sound I want. Once I had the mbl4 plugin before it was completely discontinued I was sold on John's programming. He was invovled with coding the Inovonics Omega FM units I believe. He also has a simple streaming player available aswell as a winamp substitute with RMS/Peak level display and plays teh audio slower as it buffers to prevent more silent gaps in bad congestion etc...

Hi Ross

Don’t suppose there is a link to making the Sound Solution work with Station Playlist and Ogg streaming without me having to figure it all out which I am far too lazy to do myself  ;)

Cheers

Hi guys,

Long time no post. I thought You'd be interested in a 5-band fm processor with digital MPX etc... on a PC. Here's a copy of what I've posted on other LPFM sites in New Zealand.
=============

I've read some software DSP users in here and I have to disagree on software DSP, you just haven't found the right one designed for FM broadcast. I don't have a TX running at present but I'm testing the following architecture on my PC....

I have a dedicate P4 1.5GHz running the following:

The Audio Server:
Input Phase Rotator
Wide band AGC with emergency attack/release and rest gain settings etc.. RMS based not just peak.
low and high pass filters,
5 band compressor with pre-emphasis added at compressors band drive s with more controls than most know how to use with speech detection, elastic band linking etc... all attack release and slopes adjustable,
5 band limiter... again completely adjustable.
Split band final limiter, one master that hardly gets used and one for high-frequency for pre-emphasis FM bandwidth limiting with overshot compensated low pass filtering.
Intergrated 24-bit software digital MPX generator, then out the back of a 24-bit/192Khz sound card to support it.

Configuration:
Is done via a TCP/IP remote configuration application so there's no additional overhead on the audio server PC as a processor.

The clippers in this processing setup are all look ahead, not flat top square wave clippers the word "clipping" usually refers to.

The sound is far better than the local 3-band $8,000 Aphex flat-top clipping hole punchy dominators where I am and leaves them to shame, and sounds the same if not better than the $15,000 Optimods I can tune in to. Yes there is the delay of running the PC as an audio processor. That's the main drawback, but a cheap comrpessor for a studio monitor feed would do the job.

Creative sound cards are not the best cards but the ESI Jul@ (Julia) has an awesome frequency response right up to 96KHz (192Khz sampling) to do this very well. It has a reversable PCI card for balanced or unbalanced audio inputs and outputs.

Anyway, I have had MBL4 v9 plug-in with Sonos for a while now which was a 4 band slimmed down version without MPX. It's no longer available to puchase but there's now a new version of Sonos called Sonos II which is only for FM processing basically with choice of 3, 4 or 5 band with all the big boy toys and bells and whistles if you have a 24-bit/192KHz ASIO driver sound card. The best part, this software release has been rather quiet and for legal reasons has only JUST been release due to the programmer previousley coding hardware boxes that cost the earth and under legal obligations he wait to get out of first.

Anyway this 5 band job is now FREE, I kid you not, but you need a really grunty PC and the sound card mentioned.  For more info just reply to this post.

Gavin.
