I think the 1 watt NRG transmitter is recommended because of it's
reliability (and price... it is similar to the NRG 300mw and 600mW
transmitters). Hopefully the increasing of power will come soon so 1
watt will be available for use. The NRG transmitters put out approx 720
milliwatts when run on 12 volts... and 1 watt when run on 13.8 volts. To
make your transmitter legal for the LPFM band you can either have a long
aerial cable so you loose power in the lead, and so the 500mw EIRP is
achieved OR you can get an attenuation resistor network in the aerial
lead to lower your signal by the required -3dB.
Remember your EIRP power out is at the aerial... not what is coming out
of your aerial plug... but in most cases... the power is measured at the
TX plug... and all the formulas of aerial lead loss and type of aerial
and cable, etc are calculated to work out the effective station output.
Cheers
Geoff

Had a look at the link below.
Some of the info is inaccurate.
Legal wattage at the moment is still 0.5 watts and the TX to get is  the 1 watt NRG

I'll try to get the info corrected......

Hello Steve,

First you need to find out about licenses you need to broadcast the music
(we have 2 here in New Zealand)..

What range you can TX at and strength and any LPFM rules and regs for your
country..

After that you need to find a cap in the LPFM freq Range that you can TX
signal

Once you have got all that, then you can start at looking for the equipment
to TX, record etc...

It took me a few months to understand the regs & rules here and to get on
air...

Fair enough.

I have 3 PCs, 2 sitting in pieces because they don't warrant a $500 Windows XP/Vista professional operating system retail boxed set, each.  One of the 2 in parts is a good workhorse for audio editing or playback but the licensing makes it not worth it until now.

I could buy another few second hand PC's with Windows 2000 Professional (still in my opinion faster and more of a workhorse than XP Pro/Vista etc...) but then I'd still have wasted good LPFM usable resources and eventually more landfil.

I managed to get the entire install process down to 2 hours on my next go around.

For $50 an hour though, I'd take a $15 pay cut to pay someone else to generate the same revenue and do what I want with 90% more of my time ;o)

It sounds fine for someone with lots of free time.  For me 48 hours would be almost a week of non-productive time that I could have used to earn $50 an hour, so getting Rivendell up & running would have cost $2400.  I would prefer to purchase a Windows package under $600.

Finally got it going but having a few sound card hick ups. Mainly because my cards are those old Ensoniq sound cards before Creative Labs took over them (and made them their basic Audio PCI).

The old Ensoniq has a 44.1KHz sample output on them as far as I'm aware which means no internal resampling up and down to 48KHz on Creative Labs versions (like thier Live cards too, nothing like free digital noise when using 44.1KHz through them).

The Ensoniq drivers in ALSA for Linux though don't have a PCM/Wave channel mixer so it doesn't go. I'm told funny enough the Creative Labs cards that support a PCM/Wave channel mixer. I always knew the orginal Ensoniq drivers were terrible. No stereo-mix record etc... and no stereo input record (they mono the input up).

I got my onboard Intel sound working in the in-term. They do perfer Audio Science cards but work with others through ALSA and JACK.

However, my first foray in to Linux and Novell's Open SUSE operating system was eventually a sucess. Took 48 hours and a lot of lack of sleep and frustration thinking like a Windows man instead of Linux to figure out the basic concepts of rpm's, sql databasing, dependencies and mounting NTFS drives to import audio in a hurray. But I got there. For something that's cost me $24 for the OS on DVD, Rivendell's a good free example of an automation system.

Hi Geoff.

If I remember rightly you know Linux?

I managed to get the live bootable disc going. To my disappointment only the onbaord audio ended up working in the end but that's fine for an O/S on a CD (tried 2 sound cards before going to the onbaord).

From what I've played with so far Rivendell looks reasonbly easy to use. Recording and editing is very simple (I'd stick with a Windows PC for production and scheduling). The playback interface is also easy. I found once a log is made with voice track markers in it, it's quite simple to go into the RDLog editor choose the log and hit voice tracker, then it's a simple start, record, next, done process. The segue editor for voice tracking is similar to Master Control and Simian. You can slide the tracks around before you post to the log (the posting doesn't work with the live CD demo).

All in all, I'm quite impressed with Rivendell since it's free. I might have to learn Linux now.

Hi Guys,

Last year we started this but due to my busy and everyone else's schedule we never carried this on.
Thought its back and now here to stay.

I am the producer of a radio show here in New Zealand called 'Musos On Air', for more http://www.lfmonline.org
and as part of the show we play a 'NZ Music Beat'.

Feel free to download these and air them on any of your stations, I have set up a RSS feed so you can just sign up for this to get the latest and greatest all the time the link for the .RSS feed is
http://lfmonline.org/nzbeat/dircaster.php

Or you can just go to http://lfmonline.org/nzbeat/ and download them from they're.
If you would like to take part in this please drop me a buzz and we will include you in the round of scripts we send around.

People featured in the beats so far will be: Matt Anderson, Cathy Taylor, Ethan Lessiter, Brittany Connell, Jenny Yates & Stephen
We expect at least two new beats to come out each week, You could do what I do on my station is rotate a different one each lunchtime through the week.

If you like them please drop me a buzz and I'll forward your compliment onto the correct person who did the voice overs. The production is all done by myself at LFM Productions studio's (http://www.lfmproductions.com)

Kind Regards,
Ethan

Hi Gavin
You should call in home, next time your in Dunedin.

Yep
I'm a geek
I use Linux for Shoutcast audio streaming... have had uptimes of over
200 days on my streaming computers.
Also Linux on my Music/file server. It runs Samba so all the windows
computers on the network thinks it is running windows :)
On the on air side of things... still running windows on them
unfortunately. Having the processor overhead of having to run a virus
scanner 24/7 really slows things down. I would replace it with a linux
pc running Rivendale, if I had time to sort out the instructions etc.

Live CDs of linux are great for testing purposes on your hardware... but
to really see if you can get Rivendale going... install Linux on a spare
PC... everyone has at least 10 computers lying around their
house...don't they... or is that just me?
On my main desktop PC it is running Ubuntu 7.04... I don't think Ubuntu
7.10 is stable enough yet.
Cheers
Geoff

We talked to Peter about using Codamation (I think it was called) at 94.3FM The Fish in Taupo in 1996! It was quite good then but they were wanting $10 000 for the software alone at the time, from memory.
I know that 'The Chill' LPFM station in Taupo used it quite happily in the late 90's or early 2000's and sounded quite professional.

POA kinda says $$$$ digits. Although you never know. Funny I've only heard of this system just recently yet it's development was over 10 years or something I read somewhere.

I've always known about PCM Gold and used it before but if I hadn't accidentally clicked on search pages in nz on Google and bothered to read past PCM Gold I wouldn't have ever stumbled on it. Then to my surprised I noticed someone mentioned it under links in the LPFM group. Something I browse maybe once every 2 years :o)

from what I read a few months back it is pretty fussy on soundcard
types.... so I haven't looked any further at it.
I'm sure it would work though. :)

Hi All,

I have a 1W NRG stereo transmitter for sale. Anyone want to make me
an offer (off-line)?

Used it for a couple of years since purchase in late 2002, but for
the last couple of years it's been sitting on my shelf unused, so
it's time to go. Just don't have the spare time nor the desire any
more to get into the LPFM thing.

Looking at the current NRG website, it looks like its the equivalent
of the current "PLL PRO III 1W High Spec PLL FM Ultra Linear Stereo
Transmitter"

I know it's a 1W transmitter but I can't find the document that came
with it so don't have the remaining spec to hands. Maurice Duffy has
seen it, so if he's still here on the list may be able to remember
more about it than I can, being more familiar with these than I am.

No aerial with it, but I do have a power supply that can be sold with
it if required. Currently tuned to 88.4

Cheers
Allan

It's free automation software.

Hi Gavin,

That's a good idea. Quite a bit of the meeting will involve electing
the Society officials and the Executive Committee for the following
year, and I don't think that will hold much interest for folk after
the fact. Any discussion on topics of real interest to broadcasters is
another matter though. I'll see if someone is prepared to do this.

There will in any case be notes arising out of the meeting which will
be made available soon after.

Thanks for the feedback!

BRgds,
Peter

It depends on what you call cheap....

It pays to spend a little more and get a very good Transmitter, Cable etc...

If you buy cheap and nasty, then that is what you are going to get and may
cause a few upset people on the way with you broadcasting over there signal
etc..

As it appears you are in New Zealand you would be looking at around the
$1,000+ for a good set up...

Then you have a licence fees (PPNZ & APRA) for broadcasting the music via
Air and/or Internet, Since you are broadcasting on the internet a gather you
have the licences for that...

I hope that helps...

Johnno

station at the moment because we havn't quite got a FM Transmitter, but

To all LPFM people: if you are interested in LPFM broadcasting, manage
an LPFM station, or both, and wish to either support the The Society
Of Low Power FM Broadcasters Incorporated, or participate in some way,
come along to our Annual General Meeting, to be held in the Auckland
VHF Group (Branch 66) Clubrooms, Hazel Avenue, Mount Roskill at 7:30
pm on Tuesday 23rd October 2007.

You will be made most welcome, will meet some interesting people, hear
what the Society has been doing in the last 12 months, and find out
what it hopes to achieve in the next 12 months. You can be part of this.

The Society is only as good as its membership, and the amount of work
that the elected officials put in to achieving the objects of the
Society. Although Auckland based, we do not aim to be exclusive, and
welcome membership from any LPFM broadcaster.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Details of the meeting (time, venue etc.) are listed in post 5445 on
this site (3rd October 2007).

The objects of the Society can be found in the PDF file

I'll do just that.
