MoshBox Radio East Auckland:

Hey LPFM community!

After months of frustration, frequency congestion and many
annoyances, we've fianlly found a spot in Howick side to go live
(soonish).

So that we dont have to go back to choosing a frequency for the third
time, and if your station is either side of 106.7 in Howick or East
Auckland, please comment so we know who our new neighbours are, and
we'll introduce ourselves as the new kids on the block.

If your station is in fact on 106.7 in East Auckland, it would be
nice to know we've just stepped on another persons toes :p

Suspecting radio stations around us:

106.8 -->KFM active?? Cant pick you guys up...
106.9 -->KFM again? If you guys see this or pick us pick, comment
back or email moshboxradio@...

Word.

MoshBox radio 106.7

More info regarding 107.1, the guy I mentioned gave me a bit more coverage info.  It is not in West Auckland and will not be Neon FM.  He says it’s very strong into the CBD, Ellerslie, New Lyn, Titirangi, Blockhouse Bay, Northshore, and parts of the eastern motorway.

Based on this, he thinks the TX must be in the CBD or very close to it on a tall building.

Ross.

I can’t help,  but a broadcast engineer friend of mine was in Auckland the other day and said there was a 107.1 station playing elevator music which can be heard in several suburbs.  He estimated 5 to 10 watts of power.

I have found a reference on the following web site
(http://www.thex.co.nz/nz40.html) to a 'Neon FM' broadcasting on
107.1FM in West Auckland which may be the culprit. Does anyone know
of or have any contact details for a 'Neon FM'.

I am still yet to hear any contact details or even station
identification broadcast on the station that has been effecting our
transmission.

It has been breaking up and overpowering our signal in Titirangi, New
Lynn, Kelston, and parts of Blockhouse Bay. I was also on the shore
at the weekend and it could be heard clearly in Birkenhead.

I am not sure what part of Akld that this signal originates from,
which is what I am trying to ascertain, along with the contact
details of the operator.

No it didn’t increase the frequency range.  But it’s nothing like telephone frequencies.  AM is around 40hz to 10khz, where telephone is around 300hz to 3khz.  Although most modern AM radios only pass up to 5khz of the available spectrum.

Ross.

AM stereo using C-Quam is actually a very good form of stereo
broadcasting. Shame it never took off. The receivers never really made
it here, and as a result nothing ever came of it. On the other hand,
almost every FM receiver here had the ability to decode stereo, so
once again we followed the world trend and went FM.

We tested then used C-Quam at Radio I in 1984. Radio NZ also tested it at
a temp station in Hamilton, and for a while ZM also tested it on 1251, so
there were two AKL AMs in stereo briefly. I don't know how long Radio I
used it after I left.

Sounds interesting.
I remember in the late 70's there was tests in several parts of Aussie
and Auckland of AM Stereo radio transmissions... whatever happened to that?
I think there were several different transmission formats that were
trialed. One of the electronics magazines at the time called
"Electronics Australia" seemed to detail the proceedings.

Looking in from Oz, are you guys serious about taking Kiwiland towards
IBOC HD when everyone else in the region is going DAB+ with maybe some
DRM thrown in? Given the problems they appear to be having with IBOC
in the US, I didn't think it was a serious option anywhere else in the

LAST FOLLOW UP: DAB & HD Radio - presentation/demonstration and an
interesting article on MountainsideFM FYI

To all LPFM people
==================

At the DAB & HD Radio presentation/demonstration tomorrow evening
(Tuesday 11th December 2007), here are some of the questions I put to
our guests in advance, being some of the things that we think those
who come along will want to know about, in addition to a demonstration:

- an overview of the technology
- see it in action
- use of the spectrum... how does the digital aspect open up the
spectrum... explain the 3, or is it 6 digital channels riding on the
same carrier as the analogue signal
- bandwidth considerations
- does this mean that we are to have even more proliferation of radio
broadcasts in what already seems to be a saturated market?
- differences, pros and cons in the apparently two competing
technologies (DAB and HD Radio). Which one might prevail or are we going
to see both take a market share? Is this going to become another Blue
Ray vs HDVD type battle in the marketplace (which is not really
benefiting the consumer)?
- how do you see the market place leasing the digital channels to would
be broadcasters?
- does it mean the death of LPFM?
- what do you think is the Government's position on the technology?

and from Ray Mankelow:

Fri, 7 Dec 2007 08:28:46 +1300

>I think you've got it covered Peter. How does reality match up with
>speculation on what the Government might do, or want to do.

I couldn't agree more with Geoff Barkman. Amateur Radio clubs put on
some very good talks, and these are the guys that really know what
they're doing.

If you want to find out more about aerials... radios... transmitters
etc... Go to your local Amateur Radio Club... most cities and towns have
em... even Balclutha does.
I'm a member of Branch 30 in Dunedin and we meet at the clubrooms every
Wednesday evening at 7.30pm.
This wednesday night (12th dec) we are having a talk from Bede McCormack
about his adventures at antartica working on satelite stations etc.

Other nights we have had people like Martin (ZL4JH) talking about Radio
and Tv transmitters.

Everyone is welcome to come along.

Only expense is a couple of dollars for a cup of tea or coffee at
9.30ish with a biscuit or a cake as well.

I think Christchurch has several radio clubs that meet frequently.

Go to www.nzart.org.nz to find out more info about amateur radio.

Cheers

I do agree. Officially it's now "DR" in all the official European
marketing propaganda, though I still automatically think of it
as DRM. It's what happens when you let the French think up
acronyms ;-)

The "HD Radio" folks seem to have their marketing sorted out since
they stopped calling it "IBOC", but personally I would disagree
that it is any more "HD" than DAB or DRM - sorry DR ;-)

Cheers, Chris

They really need a new name for it. HD Radio got their name right IMO, any talk of DRM gets people thinking its about restrictions not broadcasting.

I would have thought the operators of the digital radio trials
would be falling over themselves to fund this to promote their
particular "gospel" of digital tech. Seems a pity there is no
mention of DRM which is probably the most appropriate technology
(IMHO anyway) for LPFM operators in NZ.

I would have thought the operators of the digital radio trials
would be falling over themselves to fund this to promote their
particular "gospel" of digital tech. Seems a pity there is no
mention of DRM which is probably the most appropriate technology
(IMHO anyway) for LPFM operators in NZ.

You could put me down for one.  Quite a few of us South of the Bombays would be interested I’d imagine.

Sounds like a good money making opportunity to me. Record the talk, demo
and antenna workshop. Burn to DVD and sell'm.

FYI, the Executive Committee has decided that for Society non-members who wish to attend this presentation, we will request a $5 door charge to defray the Society's costs.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Here is a reminder to all you good folk that The Society Of Low Power
FM Broadcasters Incorporated will host Peter Casey, Senior Development
Engineer, The Radio Network Ltd, who will run a PRESENTATION AND
DEMONSTRATION evening showcasing the HD Radio trial currently being
carried out by RBA, for ALL interested folk.

But it gets better now...

This is worth a read.

We are very pleased to announce that Aaron will now co-host the
evening with Peter Casey, which will greatly increase the scope of the
presentation. Not only will you find out all about this new cutting
edge technology - a complete overview, but Peter is going to
demonstrate the medium with his digital equipment and a good sound
system. It should be very interesting.

Again, we invite all interested parties along. I know there has been a
lot of interest in this, and a number have indicated that they will
attend. It is impossible to gauge how many that will be, and we have
made no attempt to impose a registration scheme this time around. The
Auckland VHF Clubrooms can accommodate a fairly good sized crowd, so I
rather hope we are not embarrassed by our success on this occasion.

I mentioned that non-members should expect to pay a nominal door
charge to cover our costs, and also in fairness to members; this is
something we are discussing as to how much. It does cost us to
administer the Society, and to pay for the shared use of the Auckland
VHF Club Rooms. I therefore suggest that non-member attendees slip a
few dollars into their pocket - I'm sure that this will be enough to
gain you entry! I'll make another post before the meeting to confirm
all this.

That's about it for now except for ONE THING MORE:
============ ========= ========= ========= ========= =

TSOLPFMBI plans to hold a BUILD YOUR OWN J-POLE ANTENNA practical
workshop on the evening of Tuesday 19th February 2008. If you are
interested, for a nominal cost, subject to numbers, you will have the
opportunity to build your own antenna, tune it to a frequency of your
choice and then take it away to keep.

Materials will be supplied. You arrive with nothing except a bit of
cash and the desire, and leave with a working device.

Your hosts will be Les Dixon and Owen Dawe, in conjunction with
Chairman Dave Dingley, all well versed in matters radio.

I think this evening will require registration so that the number who
undertake the project can be established and if necessary, limited.
Anyway, more details will be forthcoming.

============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ==

Here again are the details of the DAB & HD Radio meet next Tuesday:

When: Tuesday 11th December 2007 at 7:30 pm

Where: Auckland VHF Group (Branch 66) Clubrooms, Mount Roskill

How to get to the venue:

Located in Hazel Avenue, Mount Roskill, at the very END of the street
on the LEFT, behind the Scout Hall. There is a driveway on the left
just past the Scout Hall which takes you down the side of that
building into an area in front of the club rooms where there is room
for a number of cars. There is also plenty of parking in the street.

Hazel Avenue is off Dominion Road. Coming from Mount Albert Road, it
is the SIXTH street on the left. From the other direction, it is the
TENTH street on the right after Balmoral Road.

Does anyone know who has started the new Muzak (light jazz/ elevator

administer the Society, and to pay for the shared use of the Auckland
VHF Club Rooms. I therefore suggest that non-member attendees slip a
few dollars into their pocket - I'm sure that this will be enough to
gain you entry! I'll make another post before the meeting to confirm
all this.

That's about it for now except for ONE THING MORE:
=================================================

==================================================

==================

Aaron Olphert, Network Services, Business Manager, Kordia(Tm), has
written:

>I'm the Business Manager at Kordia responsible for the marketing,
>strategic and business development roles around the introduction of
>digital radio in NZ.

>I just wanted to clarify that Kordia is operating the current DAB
>trial in Auckland and Wellington and the RBA the HD trial in Auckland.
>I'm not sure whether Peter C is going to only talk on his trial or
>about DAB as well.

>If you need the up to date information on what is happening with the
>DAB trial in New Zealand and around the world please let me know.

Hi all.

Has anyone experienced a Veronica transmitter going out of lock ?
It was transmitting on 88.4 Mhz and then jumped to 87.7 Mhz
This is almost 87.71875 Mhz the channel A220.
If you have had this problem I would be keen to know what was done to correct it.
Many thanks
Dave

I still visit the Radio Heritage site now and then. But I still have to laugh everytime I change my email address I still get added back on Davids mailing list. I've received a few of them again lately without subscribging and the latest one doesn't contain any instructions on being removed from the list.

It's nice to see some of the little kiwi stations on the site though.

Someone in here a while back mentioned having their studio photo with a Merlin console in a Tone magazine. Was this available on their website or only in the mag?

Gavin.

Sounds like the PLL lost lock. If the TX is any good it should have
shut down the carrier.
There are many variables though, from how the TX board is mounted in
whatever cabinet you may have to issues such as reverse RF entering
the PLL and upsetting it etc.. too hard to guess an exact reason.
