Hey guys,

I just realised that I never actually thanked everyone for their ideas
on reducing the signal output. Shame on me. So....thanks everyone! We
have decided to go with the long length of coax option as it will also
allow us a bit of flexibility of where the TX is located in the
studio. We were able to pick up 100m of RG58A/U from Spectron
(www.spectron.co.nz) for just over $100 including GST. We had to get
100m because that was the smallest quantity they sell. Once again,
thanks - its great to belong to a newsgroup that is so knowledgeable
and willing to assist.

I have located the area where the overpowering signal is coming from
and is suffocating my coverage... Does anyone know who this might be?
There still is no ID's on the station and can be picked up from deep
Papakura all the way through to Howick and beyond!!

They have definetly started upping the wattage as it has started
crawling into howick and sometimes even cutting out my station
completely :( The broadcasting location of this unidentified station is
defiently Manurewa side.

Also Howick in the Park cancelled today coz of the weather, pls come
check out our LPFM stand next week sat if your in the area :)

Cheeers!

Broadcasting Regulation Review Public Workshops
Monday, 18 February 2008, 12:58 pm
Press Release: Ministry For Culture And Heritage

Media Release
18 February 2008

Broadcasting Regulation Review Public Workshops announced

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage in conjunction with the Ministry
of Economic Development will conduct a series of workshops on the
Broadcasting Regulation Review in early March in Auckland, Wellington
and Christchurch.

The workshops will promote discussion and facilitate public responses
to two consultation documents released on 23 January alongside a
review of broadcasting regulation. These are: Digital Broadcasting
Review of Regulation Discussion Paper and Broadcasting and New Digital
Media: Future of Content Regulation.

The papers review the impact of new digital technologies on the
regulation of broadcasting.

The research report, two discussion papers and related cabinet papers
are available at www.mch.govt.nz. Further information on the
consultation process is also available www.mch.govt.nz and www.med.govt.nz.

The review seeks views and suggestions on a number of options.
Respondents are being asked to consider in particular:

* whether the threats to an effective broadcasting and
telecommunications market, and to the creation and distribution of
diverse content, have been correctly identified;
* what regulatory change, if any, might be justified in response to
perceived threats; and
* what specific actions might be considered by policy makers.

Feedback on both discussion papers is sought by 4 April 2008. It will
then be analysed and if any regulatory change is proposed, further
public consultation will be held on detailed options.

Workshops will be held as follows:

Auckland: Wednesday 5 March 2008, 10.00-12.30 pm, Ministry for
Economic Development, Guedo Office (Kauri Room), 45 Queen St,
Auckland.

Wellington: Thursday 6 March 2008, 9.30-12.00 pm, Ministry for Culture
and Heritage, (Wharenui conference room) 1st floor, Radio New Zealand
House, 155 The Terrace, Wellington.

Christchurch: Friday 7 March 2008, 1.00-3.30 pm, Copthorne Hotel,
(Parkview conference room), 776 Colombo Street, Christchurch.

Mâori Stakeholder
Hui (Wellington): Tuesday 11 March 2008, 10.00 am -1.00pm, Te Puni
Kokiri, 143 Lambton Quay, Wellington.

These workshops are closed to news media for reporting purposes.

Thanks for the responses on 88.5fm in Christchurch.
Interesting...

I agree with the point made about four classical stations in Palmy - what a waste of LPFM.

Mr Duffy - the person we lease off in the upper South Island at least doesn't run the local stations himself...It's ridiculous that someone has four transmitters at their house broadcasting out four of his own average-sounding formats...That time money and equipment could be put into one decent channel.

UGM originally was two brands - running in Waikato, Tauranga as 'UGM' and the upper South as 'Horizon FM'. We were two seperate operators, however did exactly what has been mentioned on this list - joined together to better make one format and program.

Anyways, enough of all that...

Keen to hear from anyone who may know if Twisted are still on air in Hamilton - they were at one stage on 107.5fm and I think they have disappeared...We are looking at buying out an existing operator and using 107.5 if no one else is on it.

Unfortunately any further action the Government takes requires putting additional resources into regulating something that generates no revenue for them (except the occassional fines to boradcasters!)  So the question becomes for RSM: if we're constantly spending time/money hunting down and regulating the guardband and ultimately making a financial loss, then why should we even have a gaurdband?

Of course in theory, it would be great if broadcasters of similar format came-together for the common goal of sharing their style of music with their community!  Imagine the resources available if those 4 classical stations combined playlists, show hosts, equipment etc and made a solid effort at broadcasting on 1 frequency instead of 4 half-assed attempts?

Reality is: LPFM is LPFM. You can't expect the same rights and range of that of a licensed frequency and unless the RSM in your local area is pro-active about scanning for and taking down the cowboys who are broadcasting over-strength etc, you can't really do much more than making friends with other local broadcasters and coming to an understanding amongst yourselves.  Because ultimately most LPFM stations are selfish, and why wouldn't you be?  You put in so much effort/time/money to get a station established and running on a guardband fequency, only to then come to the realisation that any other station has free range to broadcast on the same frequency.... the reality of LPFM life kicks in and it's not a nice feeling.

If there's anything the Government should be making noises about, it should be the proposed changed to the guardband and release of 4 additional frequencies. Perhaps that would mean more resources for RSM and more overall regulation....

Here in Palmy we have two classical stations hogging the lower
guardband when Concert FM is on 89.0. What's up with that? The upper
part has a bit of variety, Hard Rock; 3ABN and yet another classical
station!

I really think that the govt should make noises about such hogging of
frequencies. 4 classical stations with different playlists is a bit
too much, esp. when others may want to do something that no one else
is doing? Also, why waste precious lpfm space with a format that's
already in existence by either commercial, non-commercial or other
LPFM users? Just seems a bit selfish to me...

Who is currently broadcasting on 88.5fm in Christchurch?

The frequency is 'silent' so I'm wondering whether someone is broadcasting silence on it....And if so, if the silence continues for much longer it'll be illegal - law says you can't just 'sit' on a frequency and not have any content.

I remember visiting a website of a guy who had his own studio setup at
home, and was selling deals on getting like a liner a week for a few
dollars. Any local websites you know about? email: aaron@...

I've found in the past that the Christchurch Broadcasting school at CPIT also broadcast on the guardband around the 88's (even though they have a full-strength frequency)

Chinese FM & Korean FM broadcast around the 88.3 & 88.5

But yes, best of luck trying to find a frequency - it's a bit of a nightmare around here!

The frequency is 'silent' so I'm wondering whether someone is broadcasting silence on it....And if so, if the silence continues for much longer it'll be illegal - law says you can't just 'sit' on a frequency and not have any content.

Looking for a spare frequency in CHCH (and unfortunately we have a few 'frequency' hogs who think its appropriate to run 4+ stations from one residential location - at a bit more than 1 watt I may add!!!

Anyways...I'm frequency hunting and want to make sure I don't 'squash' someone when we stick our Tx up.

and then you get stations broadcasting on 2 frequencies... I.e.. 106.7 &
107.7

it might be CFM (Chinese FM), this is what I came up with after doing a bit
of digging.... Broadcasting from the Cashmere hils area... (this will cover
most on CHCH)

Who is currently broadcasting on 88.5fm in Christchurch?

The frequency is 'silent' so I'm wondering whether someone is broadcasting silence on it....And if so, if the silence continues for much longer it'll be illegal - law says you can't just 'sit' on a frequency and not have any content.

Lynch them!  No, all you can do is tell the Auckland RSM office and since you have an address, they will likely act fairly quickly.

Any Idea on who the fox busters are exactly and how to get in touch
with them? What were you able to do once you found and gagged him?

I did just that a couple of years ago.

It was a lot of fun. Although carrying portable receivers and a yagi antenna above your head around different parts of the city attracts a lot of strange looks.  It was a fair bit of work and we spent the better part of the day tracking.

In the end we got our fox.

The 106.7 interference from the oldies station has been happening all over the dial it seems. They were messing us up at 107.7 for months (I think I mentioned this to you Kerm). Its really hard to pin point where it is coming from as it seems to come and go. We were getting interference really close to our studio, maybe 200 metres up the road, but now it seems to have gone and taken up residence in your neck of the woods.

Ello from this side of town,

A little update from out east

We're doing pretty well for being on air for a month, we've had
excellent community support for our station..

We're still based in Howick, but normally reach a good range through
east tamaki (down Ti-Irirangi Road and Harris Road), but recently
I've been getting alot of bleed from an unknown station cutting my
signal, even here in Howick..

Would like to know who the owner of this station might be? Anyone
know who might also be on, or around 106.7 FM here? Theyr'e playing
oldies music, like real oldies.. Any help?

Thanks in advance!

By the way, if you want to come check us out and what we're planning,
come to Howick in the park, March 1st in Llyod Elsmore Park, we'll be
spreading the good word of LPFM for all.. Would be good to meet some
current LPFMers

Just confirming that I'm back on air at 88.7 in Hamilton and that by the look of it 88.5 is free at the moment, that said the stationon 88.3 is causing a fair bit of interference on 88.1 so it might have a similar effect on what you are doing

I'm at 88.7 currently, broadcasting from Forest Lake area , although not on-air this week - will be back tomorrow however.

The rest of the low - end is an appalling scrum at the moment

You can find a slightly outdated list at www.communityradio.co.nz under Links> Low Power FM

At the upper end, we’re on 106.7 and cover right out the north end. 106.9 is KFM streaming down from AK, MaxFM [Wintec] is 107.1, 107.3 and 107.5 are used by AK stations, 107.7 is a River Rd/Chartwell based LPFM.  In the lower end you have contact on 88.1, not sure who else at present…. Do some field tests using a variety of receivers.
