Hi everyone,

On February the 28th we are braodcasting a concert from a park in
Howick and are looking to borrow an antenna tuned to 107.7 for the event.

Thanks to Robert from Mountainside FM we have use of a TX for the day,
but are still searching for an antenna.

If you think you are able to help us out at all, please let me know.

Cheers,

Michael Rowse

Ross,
thank you for this warning note." Spam emails like this will not be
tolerated. Any further off-topic emails like this will result in your email
address being banned" . It was intended for my friend Russell who has no
relationship what so ever with LPFM... surely it was obvious this had
happened in error. !!! If you have never made a mistake then feel free to
ban me from the group. Because I made a mistake and hit the wrong key I
have received some rude and intolerant emails strangely only from the
etherised world of radio. Quite frankly I don't need them.

Greetings Dave,

thanks for this welcome update.  I know the sector is particularly anxious for a  conclusion to this.  It will be interesting how it pans out. ....

The issue of large networks and corruption of the LPFM GUL from  non primary rebroadcasting of Satellite or Internet feed is another hairy monster which will need to be addressed some time.

Your helpfulness is very much appreciated.   Seasons Greetings,

Sincerely

Hi Alan,

I regret to have to inform you that in spite of the considerable amount of work that has gone into finalising calculations that would enable the upgrade of the LPFM GUL to 1 watt the task has yet to be completed.  As a consequence it will not be possible to publish the revised GUL prior to Christmas.

I will review the work required on the upgrade both within this Ministry and with CAA and advise further on a proposed publication date for early in 2009.

Best wishes for Christmas.

Sincerely,

Dave

Hi Alan,

I have been working to finish the calculations necessary so that we can publish about the end on this month.  As part of the process I have today had discussions with Airways and CAA to confirm the rules required for the coordination calculations in regard to the separation required between FMBC and LPFM transmitters and aeroplane landing routes and also in regard to the extent of the area where those calculations are required.

ACC, the regulatory authority for the safety of things aeronautical, will write to us confirming those discussions and I am please to report that we have had no unexpected pronouncements.  In effect this means we have been doing the right things to date.  There is one area where our previous thoughts had been adjusted and that was in relation to clearances close to landing routes calculations required for LPFM transmitters.  I will undertake analysis tomorrow to see what effect this on our coordination processes.  I am expecting the effects to be minimal.

Should everything go to plan we should be able publish a new GUL mid December.  I will advise if this timing can not be met.

Regards

Dave

Your best option is to do some local reception testing and determine
the most suitable frequency to use based on your results. That's all
that anyone else will do for you as there are no detailed coverage
maps based on existing stations due to them not being registered and
the fact they change so often.

Hello,

We are setting up a LPFM station in Auckland. The antenna will be
located somewhere on the North Shore (between Torbay and Takapuna
subject to availability of location to mount the antenna).

I would prefer, as a group the LPFM community choose a freq for us to
use so to limit any interference that may be caused.

For the immediate time frame, to know if the lower or upper band (in
the LPFM) is more suitable as the dipole needs to be cut in either
band shortly.

Many Thanks for input.

I am currently downloading the documents for the LPFM Society and will
review them with the goal of joining next week.

TSOLPFMBI: Practical Workshop: a 2nd J-Pole construction session
================================================================

PLANNED FOR TUESDAY 20TH JANUARY 2009.

Greetings to all LPFM folk!

The Society Of Low Power FM Broadcasters Incorporated is planning on
holding a second J-Pole Antenna construction evening following
expressions of interest from a number of folk.

At our first Executive Committee Meeting held Tuesday 25th November
2008, we decided to set Tuesday 20th January 2009 as the date on which
to hold it. We plan to hold our second Executive Committee Meeting the
preceding Tuesday, rather than combine the two events, as our first
construction session on Tuesday 19th February 2008 followed on from a
meeting, and we ran short of time. We would look to get underway as
early as possible, say 6 pm.

At this stage I have expressions of interest from:

Robert Dew
Francis Thompson
Martyn Seay
Denis Wadsworth
Mark and Maureen Perry
Dave Dingley
Patrick Casey

We will probably have to set a limit of, say ten to twelve
registrants, so here is a call to you all for expressions of interest.

The last antenna constructions session cost members $40, and
non-members - $68. We expect the charges to be similar for the next
session, but will depend on the cost of the materials. Payment will be
required before construction begins.

There are other plans/projects in the pipeline, so stand by for
further announcements!

BRgd,
Peter Shaw
Secretary

Hi Herb
I'm running it on one machine running Suse 10.0
and the other two machines are running Ubuntu (8.04 & 8.10)
On the Rivendell wiki it lists repositories you can add to Ubuntu so you
can install using Synaptic or Apt-get etc.

Now mp3 support is available via importing and exporting facilities in
the RDlibrary music database. Natively RD plays PCM wave files but if
you are lucky enough an Audioscience Soundcard, MP2 (a broadcast
standard used by most professional broadcaster) as a storage format is
available.
Using PCM wave for storage is scary because of storage space required.
Hard drives are cheap now. I saw a usb 500 gig portable hard at Dick
Smith for $170 bucks recently. I have a 350 gig drive happily storing
9000 songs. When you consider that is shared between 3 computers its
cheap storage.

The reasons for not making Mp3 direct playing possible is because of
copyright and patent restrictions around the mp3 file. Also the extra
overhead in processer power required to uncompress mp3s so they can be
played directly. There is talk of several hacks of the program so OGG
and MP3 playing is possible but I haven't had it working.
I'm in Dunedin if you want to see it in action.
Cheers
Geoff

I can vouch for Rivendell. I haven't gone back to Windows since, I don't see
the point.

I don't bother with MP3's though and haven't for years, hard drive space is a
dime a dozen gigs these days. Geoff I think knows more about running mp3's?
Or are you wave as well Geoff?

There's a few using it on Debian/Ubuntu although I haven't tried or figure out
how to install it on them yet.

There's a few pdf's to help with first time installs on SuSE. The support
community (mailing/lists) for it is also top notch in my opinion. It doesn't
officially have support but it's always there. www.paravelsystems.com is a
new thing they are doing to sell Rivendell with support built to order.

Normally you pay for what you get, Rivendell however is the exception. People
find it good enough to run clusters of stations and head ends with it.

Gavin.

Thanks Geoff,

Tell me, does it support MP3's and it looks like a lot of files to
download from the website.. What is the process for installation?

Also, it says it works for Suse, will it also work for other versions
of linux such as Ubuntu as well?

Cheers.

Rivendell is awesome
I run it in Dunedin. The machine has been up and running onair for 85
days now and counting. I've got 3 machines networked together sharing a
music database.

*Rivendell* is a complete radio broadcast automation solution, with
facilities for the acquisition, management, scheduling and playout of
audio content. It has all of the features one would expect in a modern,
fully-fledged radio automation system, including support for both PCM
and MPEG audio encoding, full voicetracking and log customization as
well as support for a wide variety of third party software and hardware.
As a robust, functionally complete digital audio system for broadcast
radio applications, Rivendell uses industry standard components like the
GNU/Linux Operating System <http://www.linux.org/>, the AudioScience HPI
Driver Architecture <http://www.audioscience.com/> and the MySQL
Database Engine <http://www.mysql.org/>. Rivendell is available under
the GNU Public License <http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html>. Further
design details are available here
<http://www.rivendellaudio.org/Design.html>.

*FEATURES and BENEFITS*

# A complete GPL'ed radio automation system.

# Designed for efficient on-air use, with large, touchscreen-friendly
controls.

# Up to three full automation logs may be operated from a single computer.

# Extensive support for live assist environments, with multiple SoundPanel
arrays available at the touch of a finger.

# All configuration is done by means of point and click interfaces -- *no*
arcane configuration files to edit!

# Support for both PCM16 and MPEG Layer 2 audio formats (MPEG Layer 2
support requires the use of select sound cards available from
AudioScience Inc.). <http://www.audioscience.com/>

# Full support for both analog and AES3 digital audio interfaces, using
high-quality audio adapters manufactured by AudioScience Inc.
<http://www.audioscience.com/> and the JACK Audio Connection Kit
<http://jackit.sourceforge.net/>.

# Designed by radio broadcasters, for radio broadcasters.

# Completely free and open -- no dongles, unlock codes, software keys or
other arbitrary limitations.

*RELEASE STATUS*

Rivendell is feature-complete and on the air at many radio stations
world wide. A comprehensive operations manual is available on the
Rivendell download page
<http://www.rivendellaudio.org/rivendell/download.shtml>, and a
technical and administration guide currently in preparation.

*TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS*

Rivendell runs on the GNU/Linux operating system, and is available under
the GNU Public License <http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html>. It
currently supports operation using the full line of ASI Audio Adapters
available from AudioScience Inc <http://www.audioscience.com/> as well
as the Jack Audio Connection Kit <http://jackit.sourceforge.net/>.

*Recommended Minimum System Requirements:*
     Pentium 4 CPU
     256 MB RAM
     SuSE Linux Professional 9.x
     XFree86 Supported Video Card
     AudioScience Audio Adapter
     Mouse or other Pointing Device
     Optional: Touchscreen Monitor

*COMPONENTS*

*RDAdmin* ~ comprehensive system configuration and management tool

*RDLogEdit* ~ complete program log editing tool

*RDLibrary* ~ audio acquisition and management tool, for maintaining a
library of audio content

*RDAirPlay* ~ on-air audio playout application

*RDCatch* ~ automatic audio recorder and event scheduler specifically
optimized for simultaneous capture of multiple long-form audio programs

*RDLogManager* ~ tool for integration with a wide array of third-party
traffic and music scheduling systems

I know that our software (StationPlaylist) works under Wine on Linux as I’ve tested it myself.  We did make some minor cosmetic changes to resolve an issue with Wine.  The Windows Fonts package should be installed otherwise it doesn’t look so good.  This is available in Ubuntu.  Otherwise it works well.

I doubt you will find a quality automation system which is free.  Others on this list can vouch for StationPlaylist, but it’s not free.

Regards,

Ross.

Regards

Dave

Yes it is a scary song.
I have it... I bought it from Real Groovy records about 2 months ago in
Dunedin. I played it one day on air for a laugh.

I haven't heard Luke 12:51 in a while. Thanks for mentioning that Herb.

Well I know Jesus didn't come to divide and destroy his fathers kingdom. If you take Matt 12:25 in to account, that scripture in Luke is obviously talking about something much more beyond the scope of what I was orginally commenting on.

Anyone excersising faith knows how to work kindness to a fellow man without thinking about it.  We're all encouraged not to let the sun go down on us in a provoked state which is what I was orginally trying to point out, those who profess to be christian expecially. My comments on faith vs law, against love there is no law (most christians know this). However by their fruits you can recongnise a true christian, including towards someone that does not follow the faith.

Dennis it appears to be at a loose end with any further discussions or resolutions unless that has recently changed? So it'll be interesting to see what fruits they both bare to each other in resolving the dispute. One from a faith point of view of one party claiming to be more that just under the law, the other from a law point of view, of which as mentioned, there really isn't a law governing the dispute full stop. Neither are breaking the law. So solving a dispute like that comes down to morals or it just doesn't get solved because there's no legal requirement for it to be by law.

Gavin.

Someone professing to be Christian should be thinking about how to
best solve a dispute like this, not leave it as is (if one is living
by spirit/faith and not by law).

Not meaning to put too finer point on this, didn't Jesus say "Do you
think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division."
in Luke 12:51? In light of this, I'd be interested to hear how would
you explain your comment above?

Herb.
