Most of them are analogue.

I'll try and dig up the link I had for the actual PCB makers.

The one I used had 3.5mm stereo unbalanced jack in on both the TX and RX. The TX
had a channel select switch with 8 to choose from.

The RX has diversity but I chomped the internal antenna and hooked up a single
grid at both ends.

DAS-100 used to be through global sources similar to the
http://www.gdbint.com.au/Product.aspx?pID=393
<http://www.gdbint.com.au/Product.aspx?pID=393> however that one's a USB sound
device input not analogue.

I'll go hunt out the link for the maker of the insides, it's here somewhere.

20Hz-20KHz) and nothing else seems to work on the same channel when they are
running. However it's still open to interference. They do let you use 4W since
they are digitally modulated. I tried one over 3KM's non line of site in a
50,000 population town, didn't suffer any interference even with only about 10mW
going in to a grid antenna. With a booster on the right cable to get 4W after
the antenna they run extremely well.

being able to change channel automatically if someone else sent it a powerful

but I haven't personally tried them yet. However again, open to interference and
require some blind setup work (no level metering etc...)

Das-100, but can't find anything relevent. Any cjance you could send me a link
please?

digital?

Licensed is a safer alternative as far as excluding yourself from as much interference as possible.

I'm going on 5 years ago when I used a mono 460MHz channel, It cost somewhere near $400-$500 to engineer a license then a small annual fee of about $100 or something like that. Things might have changed since though.

I'd also be interested to know what it costs for a 900MHz channel these days?

5-12KM's you won't need much power for a licensed STL. We used a 2W output in to low loss coax (about 20 metres LMR-400) then in to a 12~16dBi gain yagi antenna at both ends, used to get us about 20KM's - skimmed over a hill top to a non line of site receiver hence the need for 400MHz channel. 900MHz mono/stereo etc... would obviously be more picky about line of site.

You can modify analogue A/V senders but you're living with the chances of interference. Especially if the receive antenna is pointing over a township. The max you can output on analogue is 1W, keeping in mind most of the transmitters energy is spent on video output?

There's some digital audio senders around @ 2.4GHz that work well after being modified to have antenna out sockets with grid antennas. They do forward error correction, sound pretty transparent (uncompressed 16-bit 44,100Hz stereo, 20Hz-20KHz) and nothing else seems to work on the same channel when they are running. However it's still open to interference. They do let you use 4W since they are digitally modulated. Mosgiel on the back of Dunedin are using one, a DAS-100's digital sender, I forget the PCB board numbers now my other one is been tested elsewhere. That seems to still be working for them fine in the 2.4GHz band despite the receiver being able to change channel automatically if someone else sent it a powerful enough digital signal to it. There's newer one's that also use frequency hopping but I haven't personally tried them yet. However again, open to interference and require some blind setup work (no level metering etc...)

Depending on your spectrum use nearby I think there's a few other options.  I think Ross still uses something down around 76MHz or something with an appropriate transmitter/receiver? It's a license free part of spectrum aswell, but again possible interference if it's not already in use to begin with.

Looking forward to others replies also on STL costs.

Gavin.

Subject: [LPFM] STLs..

Hi all,

Just wondering whether anyone could please give me the laymans low-down on STLs?

Supposing I'm looking to move my Tx to a higher location that's, say, 5-12k's away as the crow flies from my current studio location.

I've heard stuff about modifing a 2.4GHz AV sender by putting a high gain Rx & TX aerial (grid or otherwise) on the respective AV units. I understand these will work over short distances, but how about over longer distances?

Would it be better to buy a purpose built unit? If so, what would be an adequate power output, where would one buy one, and roughly how much would they cost?

I notice there are some 'free' frequencies in the 2.4GHz range, but would it also be better to get a licenced one? If so, what is the process and how much?

Thanks in advance,

Herb.

Prolly is over for newcomers sorry to say Jason.

Suggestion... Why not talk to some of the existing LPFMer's in your area about programming for your messages?

If they are boat-safety related, maybe talk to 'the flea 88.2' which broadcasts from the Devonport wharf? They also seem to have good coverage and might consider such safety announcements as a community service. Infact, perhaps you could aim the messages as a service to any Auckland LPFM station willing to give it airtime as a community service?

Just a thought..

Herb.

What about Freeview DTT? I saw somewhere on their website it's about $40k per year to broadcast a regional radio station.. Would seem a lot cheaper than satellite. It would also cover most of Auckland in one hit.

Ofcourse, your members/listeners would ahve to invest $199+ in a Freeview terrestrial box to listen, but then again they would also be able to view TV in true HD.

Just thinking of other options, thinking outside the square.

With regard to the commercial on 106.2, I think that's something you're gonna have to live with. Infact, they are 500kHz away from LPFM, which is more than enough. Or perhaps you're refering to Mai on 88.6. Hmmm sign of the times, sorry.

Spare a though for Christchurch LPFM. They have a commercial right on both ends of the guardband - 88.9/106.5 - go figure.

Thanks for the support. I guess a first beef was that a commercial station was taking up all the upper part of the LPFM which was frustrating..

We need 24x7 updates to our users to sharing was not available. We have to look at satellite now as its cheaper than a commercial FM licensee.

Is there a freq left in Auckland?

I'm on the North Shore and I considered broadcasting our safety information over LPFM to our users but when I did a simple scan of the freq I did not find a free channel, especially the commercial channel at the top of LPFM band swarming over the top of most of the LPFM area in this range (cutting off most of the top area for LPFM. Just a little addition on the common thinking.

FM stereo is a multiplexed signal consisting of L+R (which is mono signal) and
L-R which is modulated as a subcarrier at 38Khz. A 19Khz pilot tone is added to
sync the receiver to the transmitter but by filtering above 15Khz this is
removed from the final audio signal. In the receiver the signals are decoded by
addition and subtraction - there is no such thing as a fragile right channel.
Doing the maths shows L+R minus L-R = 2L. (you have +R and -R which cancel out).
Then for the Right signal you subtract the L-R signal (L+R minus -L-R = 2R with
the +L and -L canceling). To get a healthy stereo signal the subcarrier has to
be received and decoded well enough to produce a healthy L-R signal hence the
need for a good signal.

Argh yes the Anti-spam law

       http://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/anti-spam+law+now+force

       David Cunliffe

4 September, 2007

     Anti-spam law now in force

New Zealand actively joins the global fight against spam with the
government’s new anti-spam legislation coming into effect.

Parliament passed the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007
<http://www.legislation.govt.nz/libraries/contents/om_isapi.dll?clientID=1241354\
4&infobase=pal_statutes.nfo&record=%7BA2934%7D&hitsperheading=on&softpage=DOC>
to enable the fight against New Zealand-sourced spam and as the basis
for New Zealand’s participation in international efforts to combat
unsolicited electronic messages, mainly email.

“That legislation takes effect following a six-month transition period
to allow organisations to get their email practices and database systems
in order,” said Communications Minister David Cunliffe.

“The Act alone will not solve the issue of spam. However, from today
enforcement agencies are now in a position to bring spammers to task for
their illegitimate activities.”

The Department of Internal Affairs has established a unit to enforce the
new law and is running nationwide seminars to prepare businesses for the
law change and encourage good electronic marketing practice.

“The seminars have shown there is widespread support for the new law
because the e-marketing industry as well as individuals wants spam
stopped,” Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker said. “The unit will be
part of the global fight against spam.”

The Anti-Spam Compliance Unit will investigate complaints and act
against spammers in New Zealand who are deliberately flouting the law.
It will also promote education and awareness of spam, encourage
voluntary compliance, liaise with industry, monitor emerging
technologies and work with international agencies.

Penalties for breaching the UEM Act
<http://www.legislation.govt.nz/libraries/contents/om_isapi.dll?clientID=1241354\

.3%7espt.3%7esg.%2132%7ehdg&record=%7BA2A00%7D&softpage=DOC>
range from formal warnings to infringement notices and court actions
with a maximum fine for $500,000 for an organisation and $200,000 for an
individual. A spammer could also be ordered to pay victims compensation
for loss suffered and/or damages based on profit gained from sending the
spam.

Hey guys,

I am wondering if you could suggest some Transmitters you have had experiences with and links etc.

Preferably stereo and not made obsolete by any policy changes in broadcast regulation as i hear things may be changing from 500mw to 1W and possibility of it going to 2W.

Also any suggestions on a good technician in Wellington who can install the antenna and also supply coax cable.

cheers,

Doug

I'm on 2 subscriptions... so thats 2 of every email... I had another
email years ago (making 3 all up) that used to get the Radio Heritage stuff.
So another of my addresses must have been subscribed without my permission.
Oh well...
I just love Spam filtering on Gmail and Junk mail filtering on Thunderbird.

I still stand by what I said several years ago.
"One email should be sent out to his entire list asking for a reply if
wish to stay on the list, and delete all the non-reply email addresses
after a week."

If he wants to add new people to the mass mail outs, send them an email
asking their permission first.

cheers
Geoff.

I've got a Broadcast warehouse Tx1 I think it is. Been running nicely for about 6 years compared to the Ramsey one that sounded ok but blew its output after about 6 months use.
The BW certainly seems to be nicely put together... although we're broadcasting a bit of background static at the moment due to someone launching on 106.7FM right next to our quite low power link frequency on 106.8FM. I suspect they are over modulating. Not yet sure if it is George FM back on-air. Anyone know?

BTW The common thinking is that, effectively, you need about 30% more power in stereo than mono to get the same signal stability at a particular location. So in stereo it might break up a little bit more on the fringes of coverage because the mono signal uses more bandwidth. That is why receivers have a mono button for weak transmissions. Stereo signals actually carry a mono signal and a more fragile right channel signal the left is created by subtracting the right signal from the mono in the receiver.

Bit of broadcast trivia for ya.

Having said that, we haven't tried a stereo transmission at our location. Maybe it's worth a go?

Yep.  Expensive compared to NRG, but they are built very well, with options for remote monitoring and configuration via TCP.

I’ve got a BW but not by choice.  I needed more than my 1 watt NRG due to the site where my TX is now hosted is sharing an antenna with other LPFMs with filters and combiners reducing the power considerably, and need about 2.5 watts to get the 0.5 out the antenna.

Hey guys,

I am wondering if you could suggest some Transmitters you have had experiences with and links etc.

Preferably stereo and not made obsolete by any policy changes in broadcast regulation as i hear things may be changing from 500mw to 1W and possibility of it going to 2W.

Also any suggestions on a good technician in Wellington who can install the antenna and also supply coax cable.

cheers,

Doug

I read in my 3rd subscription that I didn't sign up for with Radio Heritage,
that pulzar in chch has gone high power. Congrats to you guys! That's 3 that
have gone high power and stayed local that I know of. Probably been many
more I'm sure.

Should I sign the Radio Heritage webmaster up for a finance loan and just
let them know they've been given the gift of a loan without prior
application for their benefit? :o) I'll be the judge of what I consider my
benefit to be subscribed too for furture reference (deja vu, pretty sure
he's reading this to have used my email address, again).

BTW, what are those local commercial licenses going for?
