OzThoughts Monday

I pray that you will carry the thoughts and
meditations of Sunday into the week that lies ahead
with its blessings and challenges.

Yesterday morning at Palm Beach Elanora Corps (on the
Gold Coast in Australia), we read from The Message
Psalm 104 where the final few verses make a wonderful
response to God and His marvelous creation.

33Oh, let me sing to GOD all my life long,
sing hymns to my God as long as I live!
34Oh, let my song please him;
I'm so pleased to be singing to GOD.
35But clear the ground of sinners--
no more godless men and women!

O my soul, bless GOD!

We also sang the great words of “My Jesus, I love
thee”. These make a great response to Jesus us babe of
Bethlehem

My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine,
For thee all the pleasures of sin I resign;
My gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art thou,
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I love thee because thou hast first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree;
I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow,
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I will love thee in life, I will love thee in death,
And praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath;
And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

In mansions of Glory and endless delight,
I'll ever adore thee and dwell in thy sight;
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, help me today and the rest of this
week to live in response to your love for me. Help me
in this time of preparation for Christmas show Jesus
through all my activities. Help me too to deal with
those who seem to oppose you even through
indifference. Amen.

Australian Thoughts at the Weekend

Bring a Plate

Every Australian knows what is meant by the phrase
“Bring a plate”. I had for many years heard stories
of people who had done just that when there was to be
food and drink after the evening meeting, a Saturday
night social gathering or some such event.

The stories of people who brought a plate without food
on it were common. In fact, the stories would almost
seem to be what we call today an “urban myth”.
However, I assure you it is not so. The stories are
true. I have heard the confessions of a number of
English immigrants or “Ten Quid Ozzies” that when
invited to “bring a plate” they did just that. (A Ten
Quid Ozzie is an immigrant from the UK who paid 10
English Pounds for a passage to Australia by ship in
the 1950s and I think 1960s). They arrived with empty
plates. They admitted later they thought it was a bit
strange but that is what the announcement said. Maybe
like I do, they remember the days before disposable
cups when we all took a cup (empty of course) to
Sunday School picnics. Usually on a string or ribbon
around our necks.

You can imagine their embarrassment when they arrived
at the hall with an empty plate and noticed others
bearing plates of all types of tasty things. I guess
this placed them in a bit of a dilemma. Would they
remain for the supper and eat that which they had not
contributed to? I am sure every Ozzie I know would
want them to stay. It is much better to have a good
laugh with the “victim” there than absent.

Some of these suppers are the most amazing events in
the variety of food. I have shared in “bring a plate”
events in three States and have found a most amazing
assortment of food. People will bring many amazing
foods. Sometimes hot, sometimes cold and some times
frozen and that’s only the food that really ought to
be hot.

I am not sure whether times have changed but I am
noticing a lot more shop bought items appearing. I
have noticed at a few suppers at our Corps that
biscuits appear in their packets, cakes appear in
their packaging straight from the supermarket shelves
and sausage rolls or party pies come in their
cardboard boxes. One thing I do like to see from the
shops is the coffee flavored cheesecake from Sara Lea
or similar manufactures. Yum!

When I worked for another organization, my wife and I
were sitting in a food shop in a town a morning’s
drive west from here having lunch before going to an
early afternoon Annual General Meeting where I was the
guest speaker. A very well dressed lady came into the
shop, and handing the lady behind the counter a plate
asked her to fill it with some cake squares. We then
heard her say, can you put a plastic cling wrap cover
over it to make it look like it is homemade. As the
plastic was placed over the plate, she then confessed
she had to take the plate to the meeting where I was
the guess speaker. I wonder when, I stood to talk
whether she recognized us as being in the shop where
she “made” her cakes.

It was when I worked for this organization, I traveled
the State and spoke to many meetings. Often during my
talks I would be almost distracted by the lovely
smells that came from the kitchen. This was made worse
when I had driven a long way to be on time and had not
had a chance to eat. Hunger and lovely smells from the
kitchen are not a good combination when you are trying
to give a suitable informative yet entertaining talk.
One further problem was that after the meeting when
the food was served often someone would have an
important question to ask me and would keep me from
the food. Sometimes, so long that all the food had
gone before I was released from my captivity. It was
always good when my wife was with me as she could
bring food to the prisoner.

Mentioning my wife, made me think of another occasion,
when a group of us husbands were standing in the semi
dark waiting for our wives to finish their “Ladies
Evening Fellowship” meeting. One of the ladies
appeared and asked us if we would like to try her
‘eggs’. A number of the guys said they did not want
to try them. I accepted and on the first bite was
sorry I did. They were pickled eggs. I am sure
something went wrong with the process. They were off
and I am lucky I did not get salmonella or something
worse. Well, maybe that’s how they were supposed to
taste but it was not pleasant. The other husbands got
a good laugh though. I am glad it was dark and the
lady did not see the horror on my face as I tasted her
delicacy.

That is a hazard of “bring a plate” occasions. It is
either feast or famine. It is famine if you get
trapped talking and the food is all gone as I said
earlier. It becomes a feast when various ladies
confront me with a plate of delicious looking food and
say you must try this. They go on to explain it is a
special recipe and that they always make it because
everyone just loves it. So of course, I must try it.
No one ever said a moment on your lips and a lifetime
on your hips, did they? Charming ladies special
recipes never count in that.

I remember well the chorus we sang in Primary Sunday
school “my cup is full and running over”. I remember
visions of a mess! It was the sort of thing mum
encouraged me not to do. “Don’t fill it too much! Oh!
Look what you’ve done! Now get a cloth and clean up
that mess!” I don’t know when I came to understand the
chorus. I however can identify with a Policeman who is
a Salvationist and who also trains Salvation Army
Emergency Service people. He indicates his more than
adequate size and says “Some people claim to be a
‘Trophy of God’s Grace’. I am a ‘Trophy of His
Provision’ ”

Country people in Australia are known for their
generosity in their catering. Here is not only the
quality of the country food but they seem to supply it
in huge quantities. I think I first encountered this
after an Anzac Day (Oz National War Remembrance Day)
March our Band did every year. It was just into the
country and the ladies piled the food on a long table
down the center of the room. The young band boys
started at one end of the table and the Scouts who
carried the banners and flags started the other end
and moved towards the center of the table like a swarm
of locusts across a wheat field. It wasn’t my cup that
ran over on those days.

Another song which I claim as a favorite is “When the
trumpet of the lord shall sound”. I like particularly
the chorus which says “When the rolls ARE SERVED up
yonder, I’ll be there!” I also maintain that we must
stick to copyright and sing the correct words when
singing grace. It may be a lovely thought to “live and
serve Thee faithfully” but I enjoy singing expectantly
“grant that we may feast in Paradise with Thee.”

All jokes aside, we have a wonderful God who gives us
our daily bread and so much more. He truly supplies
our needs and we must raise our thanks to Him. Many
are expressing the thought that it is sad that in the
Salvation Army in Australia. Our Harvest Festival
Thanksgiving has disappeared from our Corps calendars.
We can thank God at all times but it does good to
focus on his provision of our daily needs. Maybe on
that weekend, we can look beyond our Corps financial
needs, and give a special offering for the daily needs
of others in lands where things are so tough. It could
be the basis of a child sponsorship or a small project
in a land of famine.

Thank you for the world so sweet;
Thank you for the food we eat;
Thank you for the birds that sing;
Thank you, God for ev'rything.
Amen.
Thank You for the World so Sweet

(Tune: Michael Row your Boat ashore)
Thank you for the world so sweet. Alleluia
Thank you for the food we eat. Alleluia
Thank your for the birds that sing. Alleluia
Thank you God for everything. Alleluia

OzThoughts – Friday

As I listened to the radio today I could not help but think of the
many ways people prepared for and then enjoy Christmas. There were
many recipes being given for parties and for the Day itself. People
were talking about parties they had attended or would attend. One
expert in business etiquette talked about how to behave and enjoy
oneself in a workplace party which was a mix of party and business.

I have heard also an advertisement for a "Christmas with the Salvo
Band" which will be held in the forecourt of one of Brisbane's
oldest and best known pubs. It is being sponsored by the radio
station.

I remember last year that My Little Swiss Mate was visiting us and
she said that it did not seem like Christmas. The things that make
it feel like Christmas to me are the things that give her the
opposite feeling. It begins to feel like Christmas to me when the
temperature rises and is joined by high humidity. The days are
longer and the clouds often gather and drop their rain accompanied
by thunder and lightning. The rain, as it seems to do this time
every year, is interrupting the first cricket test being played in
nearby Brisbane. SwissMiss says it feels like Christmas when days
are shorter and colder. A white Christmas is not only a dream but a
reality as the colder temperatures are accompanied by snow falls
which blanket the whole season. Snowy scenes are not only on
Christmas cards but are a reality.

Our Prime Minister was reported today as saying that people should
say "Merry Christmas" and not "Season's Greetings". He even went
further and said he was annoyed shops did not display nativity
scenes like they did in the past. He said the nativity is what it is
all about.

PRAYER:

Our Father, God. Help us to experience the reality of Christmas.
Make Christmas a heart feeling rather than a response to the
external things around us. Father, let Christmas begin within us
with the Spirit of the baby Jesus of Christmas and then be an
experience we share with others. Amen.

MEDITATION:

1..
Who is he in yonder stall,
At whose feet the shepherds fall?
Chorus
'Tis the Lord! O wondrous story,
'Tis the Lord, the King of Glory!
At his feet we humbly fall,
Crown him, crown him Lord of all!

2.
Who is he in deep distress,
Fasting in the wilderness?

3.
Who is he to whom they bring
All the sick and sorrowing?

4.
Who is he on yonder tree
Dies in grief and agony?

5.
Who is he who from the grave
Comes to succor, help and save?

6.
Who is he whom from his throne
Rules through all the worlds alone?

OzThoughts – Thursday

One of the lovely things about the Christmas season is
the opportunity it affords to say thank you. A visit,
a note, a phone call or a card sent through the snail
mail and in these days an e-card or an email greeting
are a way of contact. That contact is a way of saying
thank you for the friendship and expressing a
Christmas greeting. The cards I have valued, maybe
more highly than all the lovely ones which come, are
those from someone whose life I have touched maybe
briefly and then our lives have moved on. The card in
expressing a Christmas greeting says words of
appreciation which are heart felt. The card shows the
relationship is valued, although in these days the
contact may not be as often as it once was.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, please help me to do those things
which show my love to you. Your gifts to me are so
freely thrust upon me and I feel my words of thanks
are so inadequate. Please help me to do better in
saying thanks to you by doing your will more
completely. Amen.

MEDITATION:

Psalm 135 (The Message ®)

1Hallelujah! Praise the name of GOD,
praise the works of GOD.
2All you priests on duty in GOD's temple,
serving in the sacred halls of our God,
3Shout "
Hallelujah!" because GOD's so good,
sing anthems to his beautiful name.
4And why? Because GOD chose Jacob,
embraced Israel as a prize possession.

5I too give witness to the greatness of GOD,
our Lord, high above all other gods.
6He does just as he pleases--
however, wherever, whenever.
7He makes the weather--clouds and thunder,
lightning and rain, wind pouring out of the north.
8He struck down the Egyptian firstborn,
both human and animal firstborn.
9He made Egypt sit up and take notice,
confronted Pharaoh and his servants with miracles.
10Yes, he struck down great nations,
he slew mighty kings--
11Sihon king of the Amorites, also Og of Bashan--
every last one of the Canaanite kings!
12Then he turned their land over to Israel,
a gift of good land to his people.

13GOD, your name is eternal,
GOD, you'll never be out--of-date.
14GOD stands up for his people,
GOD holds the hands of his people.
15The gods of the godless nations are mere trinkets,
made for quick sale in the markets:
16Chiseled mouths that can't talk,
painted eyes that can't see,
17Carved ears that can't hear--
dead wood! cold metal!
18Those who make and trust them
become like them.

19Family of Israel, bless GOD!
Family of Aaron, bless GOD!
20Family of Levi, bless GOD!
You who fear GOD, bless GOD!
21Oh, blessed be GOD of Zion,
First Citizen of Jerusalem!

Stand up and bless the Lord,
Ye people of his choice;
Stand up and bless the Lord your God
With heart and soul and voice.
Chorus
Praise ye the Lord, hallelujah!

2.
Though high above all praise,
Above all blessing high,
Who would not fear his holy name,
And laud and magnify?

3.
O for the living flame
From his own altar brought,
To touch our lips, our minds inspire,
And wing to Heaven our thought!

4.
God is our strength and song,
And his salvation ours;
Then be his love in Christ proclaimed
With all our ransomed powers.

5.
Stand up and bless the Lord,
The Lord your God adore;
Stand up and bless his glorious name
Henceforth for evermore.

OzThoughts Wednesday

I listened recently to a guest speaker who told a group of people
gathered for lunch that "Children enjoy toys. Adults enjoy giving."

He is certainly right about children and toys. Christmas is a great
demonstration of that. I have watched my children when they were
little exploring the many toy catalogues that came to our mail box.
Now the toy catalogues seem so wasted. Although we sometimes resort
to looking through them to see what toys our grandkids are wanting.
We hear their requests clearly but we need to check the catalogues
to see what it is they have asked us to give.

When I think about adults giving, I think the speaker is probably
right, too. Becoming a generous giver marks a shift towards maturity
and becoming a useful contributor to society. I heard one time that
when Princess Diana met Mother Teresa, the Princess said in effect
she had so much and Teresa had so little but Teresa seemed to have a
happiness that escaped the Princess. The story as I heard it was
that Mother Teresa suggested that the Princess become more giving.
Certainly, in a life that it seems was very complex, the Princess
became known for her care and giving to others.

I am sure Mother Teresa new there was much more to a happy life than
giving but what a wonderful example there is in our God who gives.
The story of Christmas is about giving. As we know it is about God
giving His son because He loves us.

As Paul writes to the Roman Church:

8But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in
sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him. (Romans
5. The Message ®)

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I thank you for giving Jesus to me. I feel so
unworthy but I thank you. I pray that my life may be useful in
giving to others because of your love for me and them.. Amen.

  MEDITATION:

(Note verse 3 in particular)

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before thee,
Hail thee as the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the clouds of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day.

2.
All thy works with joy surround thee,
Earth and heaven reflect thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around thee,
Center of unbroken praise;
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Bloss'ming meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in thee.

3.
Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest.
Thou the Father, Christ our brother--
All who live in love are thine;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine.

4.
Mortals, join the mighty chorus
Which the morning stars began;
Father-love is reigning o'er us,
Brother-love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife;
Joyful music lifts us sunward
In the triumph song of life.

OzThoughts Tuesday

On Sunday night our Corps Contemporary group
“Subliminal” sang a number of songs. One song which I
have thought about many times, fitted very well into
the Advent Season. Yes, we can lift the Lords name
high as we praise him for coming from Heaven to earth.
Then from the earth to the cross and so on as we
praise God for the full cycle of Jesus life. It comes
as a reminder that we do not only worship the babe of
Bethlehem but we worship Christ our risen Saviour.

Lord I Lift Your Name On High

Lord I lift your name on high
Lord I love to sing your praises
I'm so glad You are in my life
I'm so glad You came to save us

You came from heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the cross
My debt to pay
From the cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord I lift Your name on high

Lord I lift your name on high
Lord I love to sing your praises
I'm so glad You are in my life
I'm so glad You came to save us

You came from heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the cross
My debt to pay
From the cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord I lift Your name on high

You came from heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the cross
My debt to pay
From the cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord I lift Your name on high
	 Words and Music: Rick Founds

PRAYER:

Father, thank you for your son, Jesus. Thank you that
he is a living reality to me to day. Help me to lift
his name on high as I move through the events of my
life today. Amen.

In an excellent meeting for the first Sunday in Advent, a lovely
Salvationist couple lit the Advent Candle and we as a congregation
looked expectantly to Jesus, the Babe and Christ of Christmas.

The meeting led by Retired Officers had many beautiful segments but
one of the blessings, I carry with me is the singing of our
Songsters. They sang beautifully Commissioner Arch Wiggins songs
which beautifully reminded all of us involved in ministry during the
Advent and Christmas period, the basis of it all.

Though in declaring Christ to the sinner,
I may all men surpass,
If love impassioned seal not the message,
I am naught but sounding brass.

Chorus
Love suffereth patiently;
Love worketh silently;
Love seeketh not her own.
Love never faileth;
Love still prevaileth;
Lord, in me thy love enthrone!

2.
Though I have wisdom lighting all mysteries;
Though I may all things know;
Though great my faith be, removing mountains,
Without love 'tis empty show.

3.
Though I distribute all my possessions;
Though as a martyr die;
My sacrifices profit me nothing.
Unless love doth sanctify.
Author:  Arch R. Wiggins (1893-1976)
The Salvation Army Song Book: Song Number: 530

PRAYER:

Father, I pray that I might know and show your love during this
season of preparation, proclamation and praise for your coming. Help
me to find your love within my heart to encourage others at this
time. Amen.

MEDITATION:

1 Corinthians 13 (The Message ®)

The Way of Love
1If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don't love,
I'm nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.
2If I speak God's Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and
making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a
mountain, "Jump," and it jumps, but I don't love, I'm nothing.
3If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to
be burned as a martyr, but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere. So, no
matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I'm bankrupt
without love.

4Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn't want what it doesn't have.
Love doesn't strut,
Doesn't have a swelled head,
5Doesn't force itself on others,
Isn't always "me first,"
Doesn't fly off the handle,
Doesn't keep score of the sins of others,
6Doesn't revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
7Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

8Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in
tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit.
9We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is
always incomplete. 10But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes
will be canceled.
11When I was an infant at my mother's breast, I gurgled and cooed
like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good.
12We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering
through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and
the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly
as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!
13But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things
to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God,
hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is
love.

This week a television show has disappeared from Australian screens
never to return. Well yes, we saw the last episode of "Friends" and
also the final of the "Australian Idol" television show. However,
the one that will be missed most is "Burke's Backyard".
[See: www.burkesbackyard.com.au]

Don Burke started life on television and in other media as the "Lazy
Gardener". He set out to show some simple shortcuts to achieving
good results in the garden. Until this time, most Australian's
learnt their gardening on the hand down method. They learnt the
skills with their parents or grandparents showing the way.

Also previous to Don , anyone wanting a book to give the best advice
on preparing a garden and when to plant what, would turn to
the "Yate's Garden Guide". The Yates Seed Company was an Australian
institution and most gardening stores, nurseries and supermarkets
(and grocery stores before that) had their little packets of seeds.
Yates gave advice on how to dig soil for a garden. Anyone (and most
did) who followed their instructions knew it was back breaking work.

Don came along as an advocate of the `no dig' school. This was truly
lazy gardening. The garden was built up on the existing and heavily
mulched. The plant roots were encouraged to find their way through
the existing soil. However, after some time people saw Burke bending
his back doing the hard work of preparing and planting as he
established new gardens and landscapes.

Don had a beard but his personality shone through this. He was easy
going and he wore in winter brightly colored woolen jumpers. He
laughed often and so did his other presenters. Previous television
shows such as one run by Alan Seale one of the writers of the Yates
Garden Guide were very serious garden shows with long segments.

Don introduced a series of presenters who introduced short and to
the point segments. These presenters were experts in the field they
were presenting. Densey Cline and her husband Jim Frazier who were
experts in insects and insect photography and presented insects
found in our backyards. Other presenters showed other wildlife, home
projects and crafts, home decorating, recipes, unusual gardens and a
veterinarian "road tested" various pets suitable for backyards.

In fact, dogs became something of a crusade for Don. The vet would
talk about problems some breeds had such as bad hips, knees, eyes
and heart. Aggression in some breeds was a problem too, and made
them unsuitable as pets in a city backyard or where there are
children. Don's crusade was against breeds which commonly showed
these problems. He upset breeders who bred for the show ring and
ignored health and aggression problems with their breed. He
demonstrated that many cross bred dogs had better health and
disposition than finely bred show dogs.

Don became something of a crusader in other areas. He liked
challenging ritual. The pruning of roses had become such a
ritualistic and precise art that many people fled in horror at the
thought of it in case they got it wrong and the rose or some expert
noticed.
Don demonstrated that pruning roses was easy and the rose usually
recovered well. If it didn't which was unlikely it was a great
opportunity to plant another one.

Don showed that many plants benefit from heavy pruning and do so
much better after it.

Many people said that many Australian native plants should not be
pruned by Don suggested in the bush (natural environment) kangaroos
and other animals, birds and insects do it quite naturally.

Don showed us that there are very high standards in gardening and
landscaping that can be achieved and showed us the best overseas and
here. He also showed us that we can grow a garden to suit our own
personality and lifestyle and enjoy it. Part of the enjoyment was
allowing others to enjoy it also.

One of the delights was to wander with Don each week around a
celebrity's garden and home while the celebrity explained their love
of gardening or complete lack of knowledge and enthusiasm in that
area. Just as delightful was the visit to the gardens of people who
were just a little off center in their gardening style or in the
various collections of odd things they had gathered along life's way.

I am sure Don with his knowledge and easy relaxed style is too
valuable a commodity to just let wander off with his birds,
Australian plants and dogs. With the brightly patterned jumpers like
his, he will always be noticed. Thanks Don for a great show over 17
and a half years.

As I think of the various aspects of Burke's Backyard my mind runs
over the song that was it's theme.:

HOME AMONG THE GUM TREES

I've been around the world a couple
of times or maybe more
I've seen the sights, I've had delights
On every foreign shore
But when my friends all ask me the place
that I adore I tell them right away

(Chorus)

Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, a kangaroo
A clothes-line out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair

You can see me in the kitchen
Cookin' up a roast
Or Vegemite on toast
Just you and me, a cup of tea
Later on we'll settle down
And mull up on the porch
And watch the possums play

(Chorus)

Some people like their houses
With fences all around
Others live in mansions
And some beneath the ground
But me, I like the bush, you know
With rabbits running 'round
And a pumpkin vine out the back
(Chorus Twice)

We could also sing as we look at the delights of the garden and the
Australian backyard:

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

1.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings:

2.
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset, and the morning
That brightens up the sky:

3.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one:

4.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well:

Australian Thoughts at the Weekend

Gephyrophobia

On the 23rd October this year, I conquered my
gephyrophobia. My little Swiss mate was there to
witness it as I completed the treetop walk at
O’Reilly’s. In fact, I believed she videoed it. I
don’t have a video camera so I could not video her as
she ventured out on a boat whale watching. No, she
hadn’t been drinking green cordal! Anyway, here is a
reprint of my ATAW from October last year where I
talked about my gephyrophobia and her green cordial.

It is great to have friends. A friend will tell you
things that others will not tell you. Some times we
can tell stories about friends that we would not tell
about other people. It is great when friends stop to
say thank you. I enjoy it when people forward to me
little rhymes and poems often sweetly decorated with
drawings or photographs of natural things that cause
me to stop and be grateful for the people who send
them.

Last week I told of an ocean fishing trip that was
enjoyed by a bunch of friends. In telling that story I
mentioned my little Swiss mate. Yes it was she with
the projectile bright green cordial. She assures me
that it won’t happen again and if she visits here the
Swiss sailor will venture seaward again. However, she
tells me there is a penalty for me mentioning the
cordial. She says I must tell you about O’Reilly’s.

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Guesthouse is one of the places
that I have always wanted to visit again. It was just
over 35 years ago that I visited there for the first
time and until recently only time. It is on the top
of the mountains behind the Gold Coast City where I
now live. My little Swiss mate tells me these
mountains are not high mountains. They are covered
with a very thick growth of trees and vines and a
variety of plants including orchids and numerous ferns
and fungi. Birds abound but most love to hide from any
visitors to their domain. The cracking whip sound of
the whip bird will sound through the trees and other
birds may be glimpsed hurrying away.

The eight O’Reilly brothers and cousins cut their way
up the rain forest coloured slopes to make their dairy
farms high on the McPherson Ranges. Soon after their
arrival two things happened. One was the Government
declared the mountains around them a National Park,
there by cutting them off from the outside road except
for their established tracks. The second thing was
that people loved to visit the O’Reilly’s wilderness
retreat. So many did this that one of the families
established a guesthouse which is still the focal
point for visitors.

That is what led eventually to the test of my
gephyrophobia and is still causing my little mate back
home in Switzerland to laugh as the snows begin to
fall around her.
O’Reillys have taken advantage of the graded tracks
and walking tracks (trails) through the rain forest
but have also developed a number of ways which assist
people to enjoying this seeming different world from
the hectic world of the Gold Coast City less than two
hours away.

One of the developments I had heard was a “tree top
walk” which allows people to walk through the forest
top amongst the branches of the high trees. This walk
allows visitors to look right at the birds etc in the
beauty of their preferred home. It was put on my list
of “must dos’ and a good reason to re-visit O’Reillys
after 35 years.

So the day came when we headed to O’Reillys. It was
cloudy and we could not really enjoy the panoramic
views of the mountains and the valleys as we drove the
twists and turns through the tree lined roads. It was
not long after we arrived and after some adjustments
to our personal comfort that we headed out the damp
earth pathway into the rainforest. The dampness around
us and the mixed smells including decaying vegetation
reminded us why this prolific growth was called rain
forest. We followed the path as it wound around huge
trees entwined with vines and covered in lichens, fern
and other growths. We noticed where birds or animals
had been scratching in the decaying mulch like floor
of the forest. So we came to the entrance of the Tree
Top Walk. Our little group comprise my wife, my son,
and my little Swiss mate. We followed some Japanese
tourists onto the walk and we had not gone far when I
felt the onset of gephyrophobia or was it acrophobia?
The walk was a narrow walkway suspended between
cables. When we came to the first viewing platform
there was an opportunity to climb to a lookout. This
gave me time to discuss the situation. Basically,
there was no discussion. Before us was the longest
span of the walkway that bridged the highest point.
Surrounded by this crowd of witnesses, I simply said
“I can not go on, I am going back”. So I did. It was
maybe a combination of gephyrophobia (fear of bridges)
and acrophobia (fear of heights). Whatever it was my
little Swiss mate laughed when she came of the bridge
and said simply “wuss!” At least that is easier to
spell. (Yes! She said wuss and not a Germanic accented
vuss!).

The others spent time, walking and enjoying the view.
With my feet firmly on the earth, I enjoyed the view
closer to the ground. In fact, I found a lovely area
where one man had taken the time and laboured to
create a bush garden with plants representative of
those growing throughout the whole area. It was lovely
time of quietness as I alone looked at the plants and
then came to a memorial to those who had lost their
life in a plane crash nearby.

As I reflect on this experience, a number of songs
come to mind. The first is the verse of the favourite
made popular by George Beverley Shea and the Massed
Choirs of the Billy Graham Crusades of the 1950s and
through to the 1970s:

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed:

Chorus
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee;
How great thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee:
How great thou art, how great thou art!

2.
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

[The Salvation Army Song Book: Song Number: 37
Authors:  Stuart K. Hine]

In my reflection I think too of the words of “How firm
a foundation, ye saints of the Lord”.

1.
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent word!
What more can he say than to you he hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled:
Chorus
No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised he never would leave me,
Never, no never, alone.

2.
Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid!
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to
stand,
Upheld by my gracious, omnipotent hand.
When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of grief shall not thee overflow,
For I will be with thee thy trials to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
[The Salvation Army Song Book. Song Number: 653
Authors:  Anon]

And I cannot but remember and find peace and comfort
in the beautiful words which reflect a story of Jesus
when I think of my fears:

Like to a lamb who from the fold has strayed
Far on the mountain, of the dark afraid,
Seeking a shelter from the night's alarm,
Longing for comfort of the shepherd's arm,
So Jesus found me on sin's mountain drear,
Gathered me close and banished all my fear.

Chorus
In the Love of Jesus there is all I need,
While I follow closely where my Lord may lead;
By his grace forgiven,
In his presence blest,
In the love of Jesus,
In the love of Jesus, is perfect rest.
In the love of Jesus is all I need,
While I follow closely where my Lord may lead;
By his grace forgiven,
In his presence blest,
In the love of Jesus, is perfect rest,
Is perfect rest.

Like to a pilgrim in an unknown land
Seeking the comfort of a guiding hand,
Fearing the perils of the winding way,
Pleading for strength sufficient every day,
I met my Lord; and, though the path be dim,
He knows the way and I will walk with him.

Like to a child who, when the night may fall,
Out of the darkness hears his father call,
Far and a-weary though his feet may roam,
Sees in the distance shining lights of home,
So at the last the music of his voice
Will calm my fears and make my heart rejoice.

OzThoughts Friday

Friday. For most people it the end of the work week
and a time of beginning to relax with friends for the
weekend. I remember when I was taxi driving I would be
taking people home rather late from work after they
had tarried with friends. If I was lucky, maybe a
street or two away, I would pick up some other
passengers who were going to spend the night in
enjoyment with friends.

Men I was taking home from work would want to know
where to buy flowers for their wife because they were
late. Sometimes the ladies would ask if I thought they
looked okay. Did I think their dress was okay? Did
they look okay? Was I to say that sometimes they
looked less than okay? Could I sound too enthusiastic
in saying they looked fantastic?

Our relationships with others are governed by lots of
things. For the Christian our lives are governed by
Christ. Our choice of friends and our choice of
leisure activities are all governed by Christ. It is
interesting to meditate on what Paul writes to the
Colossians:

10Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of
your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator,
with his label on it. All the old fashions are now
obsolete.
11Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and
irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and
uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on
everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in
Christ.
12So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress
in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion,
kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.
13Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick
to forgive an offence. Forgive as quickly and
completely as the Master forgave you.
14And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.
It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without
it.
15Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each
other, in step with each other. None of this going off
and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness.
16Let the Word of Christ--the Message--have the run of
the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives.
Instruct and direct one another using good common
sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God!
17Let every detail in your lives--words, actions,
whatever--be done in the name of the Master, Jesus,
thanking God the Father every step of the way.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the direction you
give my life through Christ. I pray today as I meet
and relax with workmates and other friends that I will
live well for you. Help me to live and act as you
would have me do. Amen.

I've a friend, of friends the fairest,
I have known and proved him long;
His is beauty, purest, rarest,
His is love most true and strong.
Ever since his kindness drew me,
And my newborn soul found breath,
Jesus has been growing dearer,
Till to lose him would be death.

Chorus
Take the world, but give me Jesus,
He alone can satisfy;
Take the world, but give me Jesus;
Neath his cross I'll live and die.

2.
When my heart with joy is glowing,
'Tis of Jesus I would sing,
When my cup is overflowing,
To his feet my praises bring.
And when care and sorrow meet me,
Pain and grief and dark distress,
Still I cry: O give me Jesus,
He alone can help and bless!

3.
Would you gain this friend so tender?
Would you find this faithful guide?
Come then, make a full surrender,
Yield to Jesus crucified.
Take his easy yoke upon you,
And his purpose daily learn,
Just to do his will entirely,
Pleasing him your chief concern.

OzThoughts Thursday

Yesterday I saw a sign on a church. Thousands of cars
pass it every day. There are a few trees in front of
the sign but I read it easily enough. Those who drive
past daily on their way to the city would soon get the
message “clear and plain”:

Jesus came to pay a debt he did not owe
Because we owed a debt we could not pay

When I got home, I searched the internet to find the
origins of the phrase. It seems it comes from an
anonymous song which I have printed below. I have also
given a website where you will also be able to listen
to the music. Less helpful to me at least was a site
that gave the words and chords for a mandolin !!

PRAYER:

Today, I come to you Heavenly Father in thanksgiving
for the “clear and plain” message of the coming
Christmas season. I thank you for the babe of
Bethlehem who came for me. I praise you for that gift
of love, and I pray today that I might live worthy of
your love and share it with others. I pray for the
ministry of your Church as we prepare for this season
of Goodwill and Good News. Amen.

MEDITATION:

1 John 4
9This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his
only Son into the world so we might live through him.
(The Message®)

He Paid A Debt

1.
He paid a debt He did not owe.
I owed a debt I could not pay.
I needed Someone to wash my sins away.
And now I sing a brand new song, "Amazing Grace,"
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

2.
He paid a debt at Calvary,
He cleansed my soul and made me free,
I'm glad that Jesus did all my sins erase;
I now can sing a brand new song, "Amazing Grace,"
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

3.
One day He's coming back for me
To live with Him eternally,
Won't it be glory to see Him on that day!
I then will sing a brand new song, "Amazing Grace,"
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

OzThoughts Wednesday

Sometimes it is just good to soak in the Word of God
and allow it to speak to our mind, body and spirit. I
feel like this when I read Paul’s statement of faith
and praise in Colossians.

Christ Holds It All Together
15We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be
seen. We look at this Son and see God's original
purpose in everything created.
16For everything, absolutely everything, above and
below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after
rank of angels--everything got started in him and
finds its purpose in him.
17He was there before any of it came into existence
and holds it all together right up to this moment.
18And when it comes to the church, he organizes and
holds it together, like a head does a body.
He was supreme in the beginning and--leading the
resurrection parade--he is supreme in the end. From
beginning to end he's there, towering far above
everything, everyone. 19So spacious is he, so roomy,
that everything of God finds its proper place in him
without crowding.
20Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated
pieces of the universe--people and things, animals and
atoms--get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant
harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that
poured down from the Cross.
21You yourselves are a case study of what he does. At
one time you all had your backs turned to God,
thinking rebellious thoughts of him, giving him
trouble every chance you got.
22But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross,
actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to
God's side and put your lives together, whole and holy
in his presence.
23You don't walk away from a gift like that! You stay
grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly
tuned in to the Message, careful not to be distracted
or diverted. There is no other Message--just this one.
Every creature under heaven gets this same Message. I,
Paul, am a messenger of this Message. Colossians 1
(The Message®).

PRAYER:

Father, I join in praise of you because of all your
benefits to me. Help me to go out from this time of
worship and reflection as your servant. Amen.

MEDITATION:

For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

2.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale and tree and flower,
Sun and moon and stars of light,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

3.
For the joy of ear and eye,
For the heart and mind's delight,
For the mystic harmony
Linking sense to sound and sight,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

4.
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

5.
For each perfect gift of thine
To our race so freely given,
Graces human and divine,
Flowers of earth and buds of Heaven,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

OzThoughts Tuesday

As I read the beginning of Colossians, I gather Paul’s excitement about the Christians in Colossae.

“3Our prayers for you are always spilling over into thanksgivings. We can't quit thanking God our Father and Jesus our Messiah for you! 4We keep getting reports on your steady faith in Christ, our Jesus, and the love you continuously extend to all Christians. 5The lines of purpose in your lives never grow slack, tightly tied as they are to your future in heaven, kept taut by hope.” Colossians 1 (The Message ®)

Paul goes on:

“ 9Be assured that from the first day we heard of you, we haven't stopped praying for you, asking God to give you wise minds and spirits attuned to his will, and so acquire a thorough understanding of the ways in which God works. 10We pray that you'll live well for the Master, making him proud of you as you work hard in his orchard. As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work. 11We pray that you'll have the strength to stick it out over the long haul--not the grim strength of gritting your teeth but the glory-strength God gives. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, 12thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us.
13God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He's set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much, 14the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating.”  Colossians 1 (The Message ®)

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I thank you for your Holy Word and the way it lives for me today. I read Paul’s prayer thoughts and I say “amen”. So let it be in my life that I may learn more and more each day and be more able to do what you want as I come into contact with others. Amen.

MEDITATION:

All to Jesus I surrender,

All to him I freely give;

I will ever love and trust him,

In his presence daily live.

Chorus

I surrender all, I surrender all.

All to thee, my blessed Saviour,

I surrender all.

2.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Humbly at his feet I bow,

Worldly pleasures all forsaken;

Take me, Jesus, take me now.

3.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Make me, Saviour, wholly thine;

Let the Holy Spirit witness,

I am thine and thou art mine.

4.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Lord, I give myself to thee;

Fill me with thy love and power,

Let thy blessing rest on me.

5.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Now I feel the sacred flame;

O the joy of full salvation,

Glory, glory to his name!

OzThoughts Monday

It was my pleasure and privilege to lead the worship yesterday morning and to share the message from God’s Word. I took as my theme “Christ Supreme”. I explained that I had begun thinking about this when reading a letter to the editor in a church (not SA) newspaper. The writer of the letter posed a question for the readers to consider: “What is it about Jesus that neither you nor this community can do without?”

One of the challenges was that Christ must be supreme in our daily living. As Paul writes: “6My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you've been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. 7You're deeply rooted in him. You're well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you've been taught. School's out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. (Colossians 2 The Message ®)

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I pray today that I might live Christ. I thank you for my salvation. I pray that the Holy Spirit might give me opportunity, wisdom, words and love to share with others. Amen.

MEDITATION:

I bring to thee my heart to fill;

I feel how weak I am, but still

To thee for help I call.

In joy or grief, to live or die,

For earth or Heaven, this is my cry,

Be thou my all in all.

Chorus

Christ is all, yes, all in all.

My Christ is all in all.

2.

Around me in the world I see

No joy that turns my soul from thee;

Its honors fade and fall;

But with thee, though I mount the cross,

I count it gain to suffer loss,

For thou art all in all.

3.

I've little strength to call my own,

And what I've done, before thy throne

I here confess, is small;

But on thy strength. O God, I lean,

And through the blood that makes me clean,

Thou art my all in all.

4.

No tempest can my courage shake,

My love from thee no pain can take,

No fear my heart appall;

And where I cannot see I'll trust,

For then I know thou surely must

Be still my all in all.

Australian Thoughts at the Weekend

[First published - 8th November 2003]

Jacaranda Time

I don’t know whether Jacaranda trees (jacaranda mimosifolia) grow near your place. Your answer if you live within a 1000 or so kilometres of my place is probably yes.  You will be familiar with that purple canopy which spreads out across the tree from mid spring (October) until just after Christmas. In some cities the purple canopies seem to be everywhere in parks, along streets and in backyards. Jacarandas lose their leaves before they burst into flower. Soon after they commence flowering, a carpet of purple flowers on the ground matches the spectacular and shade giving canopy above. Jacarandas come from Brazil but they grow well in Australia.  Jacarandas are large trees which grow to 10m (30ft) tall and up to 10m (30ft) wide with a low, broad branching habit. The City of Grafton and the suburb of Goodna in Ipswich both have Jacaranda festivals.

In some places tall upright growing (25m/ 75ft) Australian native Silky Oak trees (grevillea robusta) will be planted near Jacarandas because they flower at the same time with a complimentary orange golden flower.  They look great in combination, not only because of the flowers. One is tall and stately the other a spreading canopy. Silky Oak is an excellent furniture and interior timber. I believe it is know as lacewood in some places.  Around the end of November these two are joined by the red Poinciana tree (delonix regia) from Madagascar. This tree grows to about 12 metres (40ft) tall and even wider than that. The Poinciana like the jacaranda looses its leaves before the flowers open to cover the canopy.

Jacarandas serve another purpose. They remind students that the end of the year examinations are just around the corner. It is time to turn in the final assignments for the year and to spend long hours thumbing through text books and searching the web for that morsel of information that will help in those final tests.

Jacaranda trees serve to remind the observant student that it is examination time. Jesus reminds us that we must be ready for his return. The Bible says He will return without warning. He will come unannounced just like a thief in the night.

1 Thessalonians Chapter 5 (The Message)

1I don't think, friends, that I need to deal with the question of when all this is going to happen.

 2You know as well as I that the day of the Master's coming can't be posted on our calendars. He won't call ahead and make an appointment any more than a burglar would.

3About the time everybody's walking around complacently, congratulating each other--"We've sure got it made! Now we can take it easy!"-suddenly everything will fall apart. It's going to come as suddenly and inescapably as birth pangs to a pregnant woman.
4But friends, you're not in the dark, so how could you be taken off guard by any of this?

5You're sons of Light, daughters of Day. We live under wide open skies and know where we stand.

 6So let's not sleepwalk through life like those others. Let's keep our eyes open and be smart.

7People sleep at night and get drunk at night.

8But not us! Since we're creatures of Day, let's act like it. Walk out into the daylight sober, dressed up in faith, love, and the hope of salvation.
9God didn't set us up for an angry rejection but for salvation by our Master, Jesus Christ.

10He died for us, a death that triggered life. Whether we're awake with the living or asleep with the dead, we're alive with him!

11So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you'll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you're already doing this; just keep on doing it.

2 Peter  Chapter 3 (The Message)

10But when the Day of God's Judgment does come, it will be unannounced, like a thief. The sky will collapse with a thunderous bang, everything disintegrating in a huge conflagration, earth and all its works exposed to the scrutiny of Judgment.
11Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life?

12Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day—

 13but we'll hardly notice. We'll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness.

14So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

A hymn for meditation and prayer:

Lord, thou art questioning: Lovest thou me?

Yea, Lord, thou knowest, my answer must be;

But since love's value is proved by love's test,

Jesus, I'll give thee the dearest and best.

Chorus

All in my heart, Lord, thou canst read;

Master, thou knowest I love thee indeed.

Ask what thou wilt my devotion to test,

I will surrender the dearest and best.

How couldst thou smile on me if, in my heart,

I were unwilling from treasures to part?

Since my redemption cost thee such a price,

Utmost surrender alone will suffice.

Down at thy feet all my fears I let go,

Back on thy strength all my weakness I throw;

Lord, in my life thou shalt have thine own way,

Speak but the word, and thy child will obey.

OzThoughts – Friday

As I come to the end of the work week (for most of us workers), I look back and praise God for the many blessings I have received. After the torrential rain of last weekend the countryside is very green. For so long it has been dry and dusty. The green colour reminds me of the growing number of good things god gives to me.

At the end of last weekend’s visit by the Sydney Congress Hall Band, the band and the congregation sang the favourite hymn of praise:

Crown him with many crowns,

The Lamb upon his throne;

Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns

All music but its own;

Awake, my soul, and sing

Of him who died for thee,

And hail him as thy matchless King

Through all eternity.

The congregation sang heartily and the enthusiastic playing of the band really made music that lifted our hearts as we sang god’s praise. At the end of a feast of musical blessings presented by the band it was great to praise God in a glorious act of worship.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I praise you and thank you for your many, many blessings you continue to give to me. I thank you for family and friends, for good work to do and your daily provision of my needs. I pray for those who are feeling the loss of a love one , for those who are ill, and those who are feeling a down at this time. I pray that your Holy Spirit will come along side each on and bless them with your presence and love. Amen.

MEDITATION:

Crown him with many crowns,

The Lamb upon his throne;

Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns

All music but its own;

Awake, my soul, and sing

Of him who died for thee,

And hail him as thy matchless King

Through all eternity.

Crown him with many crowns,

The Lamb upon his throne;

Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns

All music but its own;

Awake, my soul, and sing

Of him who died for thee,

And hail him as thy matchless King

Through all eternity.

2.

Crown him the Lord of life,

Who triumphed o'er the grave,

And rose victorious in the strife

For those he came to save;

His glories now we sing

Who died, and rose on high,

Who died eternal life to bring,

And lives, that death may die.

3.

Crown him the Lord of peace,

Whose power a sceptre sways

From pole to pole, that wars may cease

And all be prayer and praise;

His reign shall know no end,

And round his pierced feet

Fair flowers of Paradise extend

Their fragrance ever sweet.

4.

Crown him the Lord of love;

Behold his hands and side.

Those wounds, yet visible above,

In beauty glorified;

All hail, redeemer, hail!

For thou hast died for me;

Thy praise and glory shall not fail

Throughout eternity.

OzThoughts – Thursday

16Be cheerful no matter what; 17pray all the time; 18thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live. (1 Thessalonians 5. The Message ®)

16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5.  New International Version ©)

I am mindful that today is Remembrance Day. The 11th November each year being the time when we pause for a minute or two at the 11th hour and remember those who suffered during World War 1.  There have been since and is still many wars and conflicts happening.  People continue to be caught up in conflict.

Today we can thank God for our freedoms and our peace. We have so many things we can thank God for. As we thank God we can also pray for others who suffer because of war.

They are great words written by Paul to the Thessalonians. He gives a strong reminder of God’s will for us, that we be joyful, prayerful and thankful always.

I was reminded of this on Saturday night as Congress Hall Band played Dean Goffin’s

Symphony of Thanksgiving.  As I think back about it I think of the beautiful hymns “Praise my soul, the King of Heaven” and “Give to Jesus glory”. The beautiful music was good to listen to as music but the words open up new thoughts that I think of just now. Again the skill of the composer and the musicians draw me close to God.

PRAYER:

Father, I praise you for the good things you bring into my life. I thank you for family, friends and all the blessings of each day. Today Father as I praise you for the circumstances of my life, I am mindful of the needs of others. I pray that you wil meet them just as you meet mine.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for those who defended us in wars of other days. I pray also for those who continue to suffer because of war. I pray that there might be peace in our time. Amen.

MEDITATION:

Praise, my soul, the King the Heaven,

To his feet thy tribute bring;

Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,

Who like thee his praise should sing?

Praise Him!

Praise the everlasting King.

2.

Praise him for this grace and favor

To our fathers in distress;

Praise him still the same as ever,

Slow to chide and swift to bless;

Praise him!

Glorious in his faithfulness.

3.

Father-like he tends and spares us;

Well our feeble frame he knows,

In his hands he gently bears us,

Rescues us from all our foes.

Praise him!

Widely as his mercy flows.

4.

Angels in the heights adore him,

Ye behold him face to face;

Sun and moon bow down before him:

Dwellers all in time and space,

Praise him!

Praise with us the God of grace.

To save the world the Saviour came;

It was for this in mercy

He gave his life; the news proclaim

And give to Jesus glory.

Chorus

Give to Jesus glory,

Give to Jesus glory,

Proclaim redemption's wondrous plan

And give to Jesus glory.

2.

What matchless grace, how rich, how free!

Our Saviour calls all to him;

A Saviour he to all would be;

O give to Jesus glory!

3.

In every land where man is found,

Let us make known the story

Of love divine; its praises sound

And give to Jesus glory.

There pardon is for all who come

Their sins confessing truly;

Then pardon claim, O guilty one,

And give to Jesus glory.

OzThoughts – Wednesday

I can’t recapture the wonderful moments of the Concert by Sydney Congress Hall at the Gold Coast temple on Saturday night but as I reflect on the music, its blessing still comes through to me. I am a little handicapped as there was not a program handed out but each item was listed on the big screen behind the band. Bandmaster Steven Reay mostly introduced each item with a comment about the composer and the tunes used. This was very helpful to those of us who could recognise the various melodies.

At one stage as the Bandmaster was about to introduce the next item, I glimpsed at the screen and read (or so it seemed) “Procession to the Convent”. I expected a classical piece from another part of the Christian Church. However, the Bandmaster said clearly the next piece was William Himes “Procession to the Covenant” and he wrote it especially for his wedding. Certainly not a “convent”. Well, I hope not for William’s sake.

Bandmaster Reay spoke of the use of the well loved hymn tune St Margaret and the ready association of the words “O love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee”.  The Holy Spirit blended the skill of the composer beautifully with skill of the bandsmen as they played this deeply devotional piece. As the band played I allowed my body, mind and spirit be caressed by the beautiful sounds as I thought of the love of God for me.

PRAYER;

Heavenly Father, I do not know what today holds. I praise you that your love holds me and does not let go of me. I pray that I might find spiritual rest and contentment as I today reflect on what your love means. I praise you, Father for all your love means to me. Help me to respond to that love in a covenant relationship with you.

MEDITATION:

O love that wilt not let me go,

I rest my weary soul in thee;

I give thee back the life I owe,

That in thine ocean depths its flow

May richer, fuller be.

2.

O Light that followest all my way,

I yield my flickering torch to thee;

My heart restores its borrowed ray,

That in thy sunshine's blaze its day

May brighter, fairer be.

3.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,

I cannot close my heart to thee;

I trace the rainbow through the rain

And feel the promise is not vain,

That morn shall tearless be.

4.

O cross that liftest up my head,

I dare not ask to fly from thee;

I lay in dust life's glory dead,

And from the ground there blossoms red

Life that shall endless be.

Psalm 23 (The Message®)

A David psalm
1GOD, my shepherd! I don't need a thing.
2You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
you find me quiet pools to drink from.
3True to your word,
you let me catch my breath
and send me in the right direction.

4Even when the way goes through
Death Valley,
I'm not afraid
when you walk at my side.
Your trusty shepherd's crook
makes me feel secure.

5You serve me a six-course dinner
right in front of my enemies.
You revive my drooping head;
my cup brims with blessing.

6Your beauty and love chase after me
every day of my life.
I'm back home in the house of GOD
for the rest of my life.

OzThoughts – Tuesday

Tell me the stories of Jesus

I love to hear;

Things I would ask him to tell me

If he were here:

Scenes by the wayside,

Tales of the sea,

Stories of Jesus.

Tell them to me.

As Sydney congress Hall Band played a beautiful arrangement of this hymn tune on Saturday night, my mind wandered off to other places. In fact it went back to Primary at the back of the YP Hall at Albion Corps in Brisbane, Queensland. It was probably 55 years ago I remember hearing the stories of Jesus. At least, in a setting outside the family.

My mind came back from the thoughts of my life to the thoughts about Jesus life. I really do love to hear them. In fact, I love to read them and think about them. It does me good to think about the things Jesus said and did.

As I type this my mind comes to the present and I think of the simple phrase that is so popular “What would Jesus do?”   Many times it is represented by the initials “WWJD”.  That’s a challenge to recall the stories of Jesus. It is a call to listen again to his words. It is a reason to reflect.  Most of all it a recognition of Jesus, God’s son as our supreme example.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father thank you for your son, Jesus. I pray that today I might meditate on his words and actions. Help me to make Jesus my motivation and example in all I do. Amen

MEDITATION:

Tell me the stories of Jesus

I love to hear;

Things I would ask him to tell me

If he were here:

Scenes by the wayside,

Tales of the sea,

Stories of Jesus.

Tell them to me.

2.

First let me hear how the children

Stood round his knee;

And I shall fancy his blessing

Resting on me;

Words full of kindness,

Deeds full of grace,

All in the love-light

Of Jesus' face.

3.

Tell me, in accents of wonder,

How rolled the sea,

Tossing the boat in a tempest

On Galilee;

And how the Master,

Ready and kind,

Chided the billows

And hushed the wind.

4.

Into the city I'd follow

The children's band,

Waving a branch of the palm tree

High in my hand;

One of his heralds,

Yes, I would sing

Loudest hosannas:

Jesus is King!

5.

Show me that scene, in the garden,

Of bitter pain;

And of the cross where my Saviour

For me was slain;

Sad ones or bright ones,

So that they be

Stories of Jesus;

Tell them to me.

Hebrews 12 (The Message ® - Selected Verses)

2Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed--that exhilarating finish in and with God--he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honour, right alongside God.

3When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!
4In this all-out match against sin, others have suffered far worse than you, to say nothing of what Jesus went through--all that bloodshed!

5So don't feel sorry for yourselves. Or have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children?

My dear child, don't shrug off God's discipline,
but don't be crushed by it either.
6It's the child he loves that he disciplines;
the child he embraces, he also corrects.

7God is educating you; that's why you must never drop out. He's treating you as dear children. This trouble you're in isn't punishment; it's training,

8the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God?

 9We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God's training so we can truly live?

10While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God's holy best.

11At the time, discipline isn't much fun. It always feels like it's going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it's the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.
12So don't sit around on your hands! No more dragging your feet!

13Clear the path for long-distance runners so no one will trip and fall, so no one will step in a hole and sprain an ankle. Help each other out. And run for it!
14Work at getting along with each other and with God. Otherwise you'll never get so much as a glimpse of God.

OzThoughts – Monday

What a weekend of blessings!  The visit of cornet soloist Carl Saunders from Cardiff Canton in Wales (UK) to our Corps with the Sydney Congress Hall Band was a time of great blessing. Ok, I will confess right way that I am a “band nut”. It is over 50 years since I had my first lesson in making a joyful noise. I have had some success in doing that but I have also learnt to appreciate a good sound and the skill demonstrated by others.

It is my thinking that this week I will share some of the challenges and blessings that came to me during the weekend and I will allow the Holy Spirit to speak to me and challenge me further as I reflect on them.

Some of you will remember that last week I asked for prayer for the weekend and particularly that the forecast thunder storms would stay away. God answered our prayer that he would bless the weekend. However, he did not answer our prayer to hold of the rain but did answer previous prayers that the present drought would be broken.

It was with dark grey clouds over head and the sound of rolling thunder, that the decision was made to cancel the outdoor concert in the Mall. Immediately the sky seemed to lighten and made us wonder about our decision. Within half an hour the skies opened and dumped a load of rain on us. In fact in an hour we had about 50mm (2 inches) of rain. In that hour we had as much rain as we had had in the previous 8 months.

It was raining as we met for the evening concert. In fact, it kept raining. By 8am the next morning we had another 90mm (3.6 inches). The continuing rain did not stop an excellent sized congregation gathering for worship. The rain got heavier, in fact. It hardly seemed possible but it did. When I got to read the rain gauge again at 4pm, we had received another 155mm (6.2 inches) since the 8am reading. That’s 11.8 inches since the rains began on Friday and 245mm (9.8 inches) in the time the band was visiting.

Major Rod Carey, a New Zealand Officer appointed to Congress Hall as Corps Officer spoke very entertainingly yet forcibly on God’s promise to pour out His Spirit upon His people. (Acts 2:17). He linked it to the skies opening and rain drenching us completely in a few seconds. He furthered linked this with the words of Jesus as recorded in John 7:

37On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as[1] the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. (NIV©)

Jesus call was for those who are thirsty to come and drink of him. God was working in a new way with His people. This call was repeated to us and we responded by prayerfully singing:

Spirit of the living God,

Fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God,

Fall afresh on me.

Break me, melt me, moUld me, fill me;

Spirit of the living God,

Fall afresh on me.

            The Salvation Army Song Book:

            Chorus Number:  53

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I pray that you will continue to pour out your Spirit upon me. Help me to share your Spirit with others as the living waters flow from my heart. I pray that today you will fill me again and use me. Thank you too for the rain which falls on this dry land. May it continue as a reminder of your complete daily provision for me. Amen.

MEDITATION:

Acts 2 (The Message ®)

Peter Speaks Up
14That's when Peter stood up and, backed by the other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency: "Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem, listen carefully and get this story straight. 15These people aren't drunk as some of you suspect. They haven't had time to get drunk--it's only nine o'clock in the morning. 16This is what the prophet Joel announced would happen:

17"In the Last Days," God says,
"I will pour out my Spirit
on every kind of people:
Your sons will prophesy,
also your daughters;
Your young men will see visions,
your old men dream dreams.
18When the time comes,
I'll pour out my Spirit
On those who serve me, men and women both,
and they'll prophesy.
19I'll set wonders in the sky above
and signs on the earth below,
Blood and fire and billowing smoke,
20the sun turning black and the moon blood-red,
Before the Day of the Lord arrives,
the Day tremendous and marvelous;
21And whoever calls out for help
to me, God, will be saved."

22"Fellow Israelites, listen carefully to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man thoroughly accredited by God to you--the miracles and wonders and signs that God did through him are common knowledge.

Australian Thoughts at the Weekend

Flies

Time flies like an arrow
Blow flies like a banana

The Australian Bush is not a place where time flies. It’s a place of work until it is done. Sleep and eat when you must and then face another day. It is a place where there is always time to stop and have a yarn. It is a place where time doesn’t matter if a mate is in trouble or asks to give a hand. It is a place where things are done after milking. They happen after dinner which is the meal that happens when the sun is high in the sky. Tea most often happens after dark when there is no light to continue working. Tea is the evening meal.

In days gone by many a new chum just out in the colony for the experience or some other unmentioned reason learnt that to be invited for tea was not an invitation to a genteel cup of tea and a tasty sandwich or sweet creamy cake. It was an invitation to a lump of corn beef or pickled pork or if he was lucky a slab of steak which would have fed the whole boarding house at school. With that would be as many (spuds) potatoes or a heap of mashed spud that any Irishman would die for. A couple of boiled onions or some tinned (canned) peas would complete the main course. Oh and there would be the gravy. There would be bread which on good days had butter or jam to go with it but mostly was handy for soaking up the gravy and helping it to the mouth. Right from the beginning of the meal, there would be copious amounts of tea, sometimes with fresh milk often with tinned condensed milk and a couple of spoons of sugar to sweeten it. Tea was the accompaniment to any meal. However as I was indicating it was not referred to as tea it was a “cuppa” or more recently a “brew.”

The other accompaniments to the meal were flies. The smaller bush flies or house flies were always there. They buzzed from place to place and tried to grab a quick snack from the plates. If you gave your attention to the meat they wanted the vegies, or would be satisfied with the bread. These small flies are brushed away with the sweep of a hand. The buzz of a blow fly will draw people to action like a soldier called to attention. This is no parade ground but people are very wary of the blow fly which will quickly deposit a wriggling minute maggot or a dozen wherever it lands.

Blow flies like bananas. Well, they might but they prefer the smell of meat cooking and love the sight of meat unattended on a platter or a careless diner not guarding his meal.  I remember once sitting with a group of people in a country town backyard. The wafting smell of barbecuing meat had alerted all the flies of the district that lunch was nearly ready. So they gathered.

We had not long asked the Lord’s blessing on the meal when the old retired Brigadier (Salvation Army officer) who was very wise to the ways of the bush took the sugar bowl and empty a couple of heaps on the table beside him. We all looked and thought the years had taken their toll. We were rescued by his wife who asked “Stan, what are you doing?” Brigadier Stan simply said “that’s for the flies, it will keep them busy!”
There is debate at times about flies and what attracts them most. It seems that most people are agreed that horses, sheep, cattle, ducks, and chooks (chickens) attract their fair share of flies.  In recent times, with enlightenment meaning we do not spray insecticides as much as we used to, people are looking for natural ways of curbing flies.

One of the introductions to Oz to help curb has been the dung beetle. This busy little burrowing beetle has a great love of dung. So much so, that he not only eats the stuff but takes it home to use when breeding. A dung beetle or a number of them can very quickly reduce a cow pat to nothing having either eaten it or taken down into the tunnels it has dug. The digging activity of the tunnelling beetles results in the aeration of soil as well as the transfer of nutrients to the soil by releasing the nutrients in the dung. Also, dung beetles break down dung and prevent flies from breeding in it.

It a hot summer’s day in the out back you can watch people doing “the great Australian salute”. Moisture seeking small bush flies love to land on the face and collect moisture there or go to the corner of the eyes beside the nose to have a drink. Thus a rapid movement of the open hand from side to side across the face chases the flies, until they return again. Watch a politician or a farmer being interviewed in the bush and you will see the great Australian salute in action.

The other thing that happens in the dry heat of summer is that flies will gather on the sweat wet back of a shirt. It is nothing to see someone walking along the street or working and find 30 or more flies on the back of their shirt or blouse. Again the flies know it is a source of moisture.
Today most homes are screened against flies and mosquitos. However, in days gone by there were all types of sprays and traps to keep the flies away. In fact browse the supermarket shelves and they are still available. Some of the poisons have gone but they are replaced by some that in the makers enthusiasm for the safety of their ‘natural’ product almost invites you to have it on your toast.

One of my favourites when I was a kid before we had fly screens on the windows was the sticky fly paper. This was a strip of very sticky paper that was uncoiled from the container and hung with a thumb tack from the ceiling. It attracted the flies and when they landed on it there was no escape. It was great entertainment to watch the flies land on a new strip and listen to them buzz until they grew silent, all the effort to escape having taken all their energy.

It was great fun, too, to chase the flies around the house with a fly swatter. It took some skill or was it luck to get a fly before it landed? Yes, this was the days before television when life was uncomplicated and simple. I noticed last week one of my Swiss friends pick up a fly swat in a tourist souvenir shop. It was a great souvenir. The wide action end of the swat was in the shape of a map of Australia. I imagine it is more useful than some of the souvenirs that are offered to our visitors.
In the hot days and evening of summer, Salvation Army bandsmen in Australia have to go out and play Christmas carols. Carolling is something that the bandsmen usually look forward to but there are some hazards. One is flies. More than once in mid carol, I have heard a bandsman break into a spasm of enthusiastic coughing. You see as he tried for a quick but deep breath through the corners of his mouth without losing time, he has suddenly lost it as he realises he has also inhaled a fly.

In the evening, the hazard is not so much flies as mosquitos. As the sun sets and the bandsmen come out for an evening of carols, the mosquitos find a new target has moved into their territory.  These days the well equipped bandsmen goes equipped with roll on or spray insect repellent. Forearmed in this way the bandsmen is able to continue without slaping at the singing hordes of insects.

At one small corps in the northern suburbs of Newcastle (Australia) surrounding swamp made a great breeding place for mosquitos that came to visit any unwary person. It was interesting to note that in the Corps information for open air meetings and Christmas Carolling were instructions on how to burn cow dung to keep the mosquitos away. When I was at the corps we used insect repellent but I often wondered about the band turning up in the street with music and song, War Crys and collection boxes and a can of smouldering cow dung.

Flies are pests. They must have a purpose. I breed Australian finches but I have hesitated to do as books recommend and hang a sheep’s heart in my aviary. The idea is that flies will infest it with maggots and as the maggots fall from the heart the parent finches will grab them and use them as protein feed for their young.

I am also a keen fisherman, and although I have used a lot of baits, again I have hesitated to use “gentes” or maggots as bait. They say they are okay to use but I will leave that to someone else.
Flies were some of the pests God sent to annoy the Pharoah and his Egyptian citizens (Exodus Chapter 8) so that the Pharoah might let the Children of Israel go and alow Moses to lead them to the Promised Land.
The Psalmist refers to God’s power over his enemies. “GOD's my strong champion;
I flick off my enemies like flies”. (Psalm 118: 7 The Message ®)

This weekend I will leave you to suggest a song or chorus that contains the word “fly” or “flies”. For example” “Trusting as the moments fly “.  ;-)

Psalm 118  (The Message®)
1Thank GOD because he's good, because his love never quits.
2Tell the world, Israel,
"His love never quits."
3And you, clan of Aaron, tell the world,
"His love never quits."
4And you who fear GOD, join in,
"His love never quits."
5Pushed to the wall, I called to GOD;
from the wide open spaces, he answered.
6GOD's now at my side and I'm not afraid;
who would dare lay a hand on me?
7GOD's my strong champion;
I flick off my enemies like flies.
8Far better to take refuge in GOD
than trust in people;
9Far better to take refuge in GOD
than trust in celebrities.
10Hemmed in by barbarians,
in GOD's name I rubbed their faces in the dirt;
11Hemmed in and with no way out,
in GOD's name I rubbed their faces in the dirt;
12Like swarming bees, like wild prairie fire, they hemmed me in;
in GOD's name I rubbed their faces in the dirt.
13I was right on the cliff-edge, ready to fall,
when GOD grabbed and held me.
14GOD's my strength, he's also my song,
and now he's my salvation.
15Hear the shouts, hear the triumph songs
in the camp of the saved?
"The hand of GOD has turned the tide!
16The hand of GOD is raised in victory!
The hand of GOD has turned the tide!"
```````````````````````````
27GOD is God,
he has bathed us in light.
Festoon the shrine with garlands,
hang coloured banners above the altar!
28You're my God, and I thank you.
O my God, I lift high your praise.
29Thank GOD-he's so good.
His love never quits!
OzThoughts Friday
One of the real joys of the internet is the friends we can meet. Some people raise their eyebrows when we talk about meeting people on the net but I have found it a place where I have met real people and had an opportunity to share faith and friendship, laughs and tears with them.
At times, I find friends who give me real encouragement and some have done this constantly over many years. Tonight I met in Salvocommunity Chatroom, the host of the room who is a Salvationist from Perth Western Australia. That’s almost 5,000 kilometres or 3000 miles by road from where I am on the Gold Coast. Narelle is a reader of OzThoughts and she shared with me a song she used in a Songsters devotional. There is a great affirmation and prayer in the song Narelle shares with us. Here is what she wrote:
I would like to share some words with you from the Salvo song book that have been a real blessing to me over the last couple of months.
I found these words really helped.  I used these words as a devotional at Songsters with the following thought (I wrote this on the day that I was collecting with mum for Red Shield and awaiting my test results)
You may think in your life that you need someone.
For  example, today I needed my mum as moral support while I was waiting for some results to come through.  But during the week at work (at Newcrest) I was listening to some music from the Salvo Website and one songster piece that I listened to was “I need thee every hour”.
Even though it was great to have my mum with me to support me, the one person that I really needed at this time was God and I did not turn to him in my time of need.  How often  do we do that in our lives, the times we need someone we very rarely turn to God but to our mum, dad, best friend etc.
I then read the words of the song:
I need thee every hour,
Most gracious Lord,
No tender voice like thine
Can peace afford.
Chorus
I need thee, O I need thee,
Every hour I need thee;
O bless me now, my Saviour,
I come to thee.
2.
I need thee every hour,
Stay thou near by;
Temptations lose their power
When thou art nigh.
3.
I need thee every hour,
In joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain.
4.
I need thee every hour,
Teach me thy will,
And thy rich promises
In me fulfil
OzThoughts Thursday
I listened to an interview some time ago with Tony Campolo who said he loved the old hymns because in them we sang our Theology. He also said if he gets to heaven and it is “praise and worship” he is out of there. I don’t agree with that last bit. Well not entirely.
I thought of this interview when on Salvocommunity, Cornucopia asked if anyone knew the words of the Chorus “For God so loved the world.” She gave them as she remembered them and we came to some agreement on what the words were.
I thought of my youth when 20 to 35 bandsmen would sing this in the bandroom before meetings and when the same bandsmen sang it in open air meetings. The blending of the voices and the harmonies made it something to remember.
It is a song that is a pure testimony based on Scripture. It may not be a Scripture verse in song but it certainly drips of Bible based faith.  The thing is now to find a copy of the music or enough people who know it to re-introduce it to our range of choruses we sing.
It is choruses like this that give us a basis for sharing our faith. It gives us thanksgiving for God’s love and action in the past. It reminds of God’s forgiveness and our salvation. It gives us hope for the future.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank you for your love for me. I look at the death of your Son on Calvary and I try to understand something of the intense suffering but I don’t. I do see it was for me that Jesus died and I thank you that because of that my sins are forgiven. I pray today that I might live worthy of that suffering. I pray that your Holy Spirit will keep me from sin. Amen.
MEDITATION:
John 3
16"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. (The Message ®)
Romans 5
8But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him. (The Message ®)
Romans 6
23Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master. (The Message ®)
John 14
1"Don't let this throw you. You trust God, don't you? Trust me. 2There is plenty of room for you in my Father's home. If that weren't so, would I have told you that I'm on my way to get a room ready for you? 3And if I'm on my way to get your room ready, I'll come back and get you so you can live where I live.
6Jesus said, "I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. (The Message ®)
For God so loved the world,
He gave His only Son
To die on Calvary's tree,
From sin to set me free;
Someday He's coming back,
What glory that will be!
Wonderful His love to me. –
            Smith (c) Renewal 1966 Singspiration, Inc.
To God be the glory, great things he hath done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son;
Who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Chorus
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give him the glory; great things he hath done!
2.
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
3.
Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer and higher and greater will be
Our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.
OzThoughts Wednesday
It is celebration time!
Daily OzThoughts has been in operation for exactly one year.  Hallelujah.
On Monday 3rd November 2003 I reflected on the previous weekend when the Sydney Staff Songsters had been at our Corps, The Gold Coast Temple. It was a weekend full of blessing as the many beautiful voices were lifted in praise and prayer before God. I am sure God spoke to many. I know he spoke to me. I felt a definite urge to move from the weekly Australian Thoughts at the Weekend which had been going for just 10 months to a daily devotional piece. I felt God saying he would be with me in it as the Songsters sang “He knows my name”. The Chorus says “He knows my name
He knows my every thought” and I felt he was telling me to share those thoughts to encourage others in their Christian walk.
Today, I praise God for the Holy Spirit filling me and using my words to bring encouragement, comfort, assurance and peace to others. I believe too there has been a sense of Christian Joy even in tough times and when love ones have been Promoted to glory.
I praise God to for the many who have sent notes of encouragement and thanks. Every time when I wondered if anyone was reading these messages, I would get a note of thanks. I praise God for each of these people.
I am thankful for those who post or allow the OzThoughts on their websites:
Today, I repeat the prayer I prayed on the 3 11 03:
Prayer:
O God, my Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me. I thank you it is not a blind love that just envelopes me like a spring fog.  It is a love that takes notice of me and a love that cares about my thoughts and feelings. I thank you that you hear me. Please hear my thanks and my prayer for guidance this week. Thanks for walking before me in life’s uncertainty and blessings. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
I have a maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hand
Chorus
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And hears me when I call
I have a Father
He calls me his own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
Chorus
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And hears me when I call
OzThoughts Tuesday
Today, the first Tuesday in November Oz stops for a horse race. The Melbourne Cup is said to be the premier horse race in Oz and the State of Victoria gets a Public holiday for the event. Even those who are not interested in horse racing and abhor the gambling side of it can somehow get caught up in it. It is tragic the amount of dollars that are invested and mostly lost in gambling on the day, by a nation of 20 million people.  One report estimated that punters are expected to bet more than $120 million at the nation's TABs (‘Government’ Betting Shops) and tens of millions of dollars more will be wagered with bookmakers and online betting agencies.
Today, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in the USA is Election Day. At least it is the schedule that each 4 years registered voters will elect a President. Some say it is the most important election in the world because of the powerful position of the United States President in the politics of the world. Some where in excess of 100 million registered voters will vote. In the last election, in 2000, 111 million people voted out of an over 18 resident population of 186 million people, of whom 130 million were registered to vote.
Today, we need to stop and pray. We need to pray for a nation in the grip of gambling. We need to pray for this world. We need to pray for peace. Most of all we need to pray for the United States of America that through the hands of the people that God’s Will will be done.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, I pray for the people s of this world. I pray that each will look to you for the things of life. I pray for those who bet money they cannot afford believing they will win and solve life’s problems. I pray that they might look to you for guidance in the things of life. Father, I pray too for those who have the responsibility of casting a vote. May you guide their heart and mind to direct their and to do your will. I pray that your man, your people for this hour will be victorious. Amen.
MEDITATION:
Psalm 118  (The Message®)
1Thank GOD because he's good, because his love never quits.
2Tell the world, Israel,
"His love never quits."
3And you, clan of Aaron, tell the world,
"His love never quits."
4And you who fear GOD, join in,
"His love never quits."
5Pushed to the wall, I called to GOD;
from the wide open spaces, he answered.
6GOD's now at my side and I'm not afraid;
who would dare lay a hand on me?
7GOD's my strong champion;
I flick off my enemies like flies.
8Far better to take refuge in GOD
than trust in people;
9Far better to take refuge in GOD
than trust in celebrities.
10Hemmed in by barbarians,
in GOD's name I rubbed their faces in the dirt;
11Hemmed in and with no way out,
in GOD's name I rubbed their faces in the dirt;
12Like swarming bees, like wild prairie fire, they hemmed me in;
in GOD's name I rubbed their faces in the dirt.
13I was right on the cliff-edge, ready to fall,
when GOD grabbed and held me.
14GOD's my strength, he's also my song,
and now he's my salvation.
15Hear the shouts, hear the triumph songs
in the camp of the saved?
"The hand of GOD has turned the tide!
16The hand of GOD is raised in victory!
The hand of GOD has turned the tide!"
17I didn't die. I lived!
And now I'm telling the world what GOD did.
18GOD tested me, he pushed me hard,
but he didn't hand me over to Death.
19Swing wide the city gates--the righteous gates!
I'll walk right through and thank GOD!
20This Temple Gate belongs to GOD,
so the victors can enter and praise.
21Thank you for responding to me;
you've truly become my salvation!
22The stone the masons discarded as flawed
is now the capstone!
23This is GOD's work.
We rub our eyes--we can hardly believe it!
24This is the very day GOD acted--
let's celebrate and be festive!
25Salvation now, GOD. Salvation now!
Oh yes, GOD-a free and full life!
26Blessed are you who enter in GOD's name--
from GOD's house we bless you!
27GOD is God,
he has bathed us in light.
Festoon the shrine with garlands,
hang coloured banners above the altar!
28You're my God, and I thank you.
O my God, I lift high your praise.
29Thank GOD-he's so good.
Though thunders roll and darkened be the sky,
I'll trust in thee!
Though joys may fade and prospects droop and die,
I'll trust in thee!
No light may shine upon life's rugged way,
Sufficient is thy grace from day to day.
2.
I'm not outside thy providential care,
I'll trust in thee!
I'll walk by faith thy chosen cross to bear,
I'll trust in thee!
Thy will and wish I know are for the best,
This gives to me abundant peace and rest.
3.
Thy word is sure, thy promise never fails,
I'll trust in thee!
A hiding place thou art when Hell assails,
I'll trust in thee!
I conquer all while hiding 'neath thy wing,
And in the storm sweet songs of triumph sing.
4.
I'm pressing on towards my home in Heaven,
I'll trust in thee!
Where crowns of life to faithful ones are given,
I'll trust in thee!
This hope is mine, through Jesus crucified,
And all through grace I shall be glorified.
OzThoughts Monday
GOD is magnificent; he can never be praised enough.
There are no boundaries to his greatness. (Psalm: 145.3 The Message®)
Today my heart is full of praise to God because of his goodness. I
return to work today to greet workmates and to accept the challenges
and joys of the daily round. As I do that I reflect on the past week
when I have spent time with family and friends enjoying the
greatness of God's creation.
From mountain top to seashore I have marvelled at his handiwork. I
have walked and driven through rain forest and swum in both a fresh
water lake perched high on a sand hill.
I watched a wild dingo wander around the lawns of the centre where I
was staying looking for morsels of food.
I stood on a tourist filled boat and watched a mother humpback whale
with her baby sleeping beside her. I then saw them as they woke and
the baby played around mum.
I held a handful of bird seed as colourful parrots (Crimson Rosellas
and Australian King Parrots) stood on my arm and fought each other
to get the choice seeds. I only discovered later they dug their
claws in and drew blood.
Countless other birds and insects flew around in various places each
busy about their business. Each one demonstrated the marvels of
design and purpose in God's nature.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, I praise you for your greatness demonstrated in
nature. I praise you for family and friends. I pray now as I come to
the beginning of this work week, that you will be with me and I will
marvel at your planning and leadership in my life. I pray, Father,
for my family and friends. I pray that each one will know your
friendship, and your daily care for them. Amen.
PRAYER REQUEST.
A former workmate, Lesley, who is a committed Christian has asked
that I might pray for her oldest daughter. The outcome of tests
shows that surgery is necessary. Lesley asks that we pray for her
daughter and those who have responsibility for her health care right
now.
PRAYER THANKS:
My friend Satish from India has asked me to pass on thanks for
prayers which have been answered in regard to his father's health.
His father was strong enough to attend a meeting last Sunday.
MEDITATION:
Psalm 145
1I lift you high in praise, my God, O my King! and I'll bless your
name into eternity.
2I'll bless you every day,
and keep it up from now to eternity.
3GOD is magnificent; he can never be praised enough.
There are no boundaries to his greatness.
4Generation after generation stands in awe of your work;
each one tells stories of your mighty acts.
5Your beauty and splendour have everyone talking;
I compose songs on your wonders.
6Your marvellous doings are headline news;
I could write a book full of the details of your greatness.
7The fame of your goodness spreads across the country;
your righteousness is on everyone's lips.
8GOD is all mercy and grace--
not quick to anger, is rich in love.
9GOD is good to one and all;
everything he does is suffused with grace.
10Creation and creatures applaud you, GOD;
11your holy people bless you.
They talk about the glories of your rule,
they exclaim over your splendour,
12Letting the world know of your power for good,
the lavish splendour of your kingdom.
13Your kingdom is a kingdom eternal;
you never get voted out of office.
GOD always does what he says,
and is gracious in everything he does.
14GOD gives a hand to those down on their luck,
gives a fresh start to those ready to quit.
15All eyes are on you, expectant;
you give them their meals on time.
16Generous to a fault,
you lavish your favour on all creatures.
17Everything GOD does is right--
the trademark on all his works is love.
18GOD's there, listening for all who pray,
for all who pray and mean it.
19He does what's best for those who fear him--
hears them call out, and saves them.
20GOD sticks by all who love him,
but it's all over for those who don't.
21My mouth is filled with GOD's praise.
Let everything living bless him,
bless his holy name from now to eternity!
(The Message ®)
For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
2.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale and tree and flower,
Sun and moon and stars of light,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
3.
For the joy of ear and eye,
For the heart and mind's delight,
For the mystic harmony
Linking sense to sound and sight,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
4.
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
5.
For each perfect gift of thine
To our race so freely given,
Graces human and divine,
Flowers of earth and buds of Heaven,
Father, unto thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.
