True, you don't have to know Discworld at all to play, it all explains itself as you go. And afterwards we can recommend which books you should start with to learn The Way of Pratchett.
For all our Discworld fans, and those keen to learn more about the series, on Friday 6th June we'll be hosting a Significant Quest game!
Significant Quest is a fan-made game based on the Discworld setting where you become a God and collect believers from characters and pit them against your rival Gods, travelling around the Disc in an effort to be the number 1 God and crush all in your wake. Just a little friendly competition as far as Gods go.
The game works best with many players, so far the record is ten, let's try for bigger again!

Hi again,
I'll see what I can do. Totally alien to me at this stage, but what better way to become accustomed or familiarised with the game. Ciao

Bad news: i'm not going to be able to make it to the minicon after
all, so it is more than likely that we won't have a table there.
There has been talk of reviving the Swapmeet idea however - so Mark,
if you're still looking for an avenue to sell your airbrushings this
may be better - closer to home at least.
Sorry to poop the party,

Hi,
At this stage, count me in. I will confer with my learned colleague (David) but he usually tags along wherever I go, without putting up too much of a fight. We may even have an interstate visitor (that's interstate...not intergalactic) who would love to join us.
I've just made a deal that will keep this club running (Enter Darth Vader).
Seriously, thanks to the good people at The Australian Discworld Convention Inc. SFFiG is now running under their legal banner. This means that we now have insurance to cover us for any events we want to run, and therefore means we can moe ourselves to the Girl Guides Hall (cost to the club: $30 for an evening).
So you are all invited to Trivia 2 - Return of SFFiG
Friday May 2, 7PM
Girl Guides Hall (33 Myers St)
Cost: $5
Tea & coffee provided
PRIZES!!!
FUN!!!
SCIFI!!!
This trivia is going to be an evolution on our first from last year, with regular quiz questions, games and laughter. Much inspiration from the recent triumphant return of Good News Week.
I'm doing a bit more advertising than normal for this one - we're trying to make this a big one. So if you'd like some flers to distribute in your own areas please email me and I will send you the documents.

Howdy y'awl,
David and I will be in on a trivia event. Obviously, we would prefer not to have to pay to the Gaming Knights, but as most places would slug you for the use of their premises, they are actually being generous by allowing the fee to be used in their canteen. And so, we are okay with the money thing. I am just hoping you/we can find somewhere ground floor, so my poor arthritic knees don't scream at me again. Stairs are not my friend.
I like the 3-4 notice too, so we can scour for fresh blood, so to speak. Glad that you are back in the saddle again, and hoping your brain hasn't atrophied too much from lack of quality tv viewing. Ciao

Did have a date, but due to my own hesitation and just a pinch of procrastination (I have a lot of Star Trek episodes to get through and my Foxtel IQ will start deleting if I don't keep up with it!) we're going to have to postpone - just because we'd like at least 3-4 weeks advertising time. Attracting fresh blood is important to the survival of the club. Take that whichever way you like.
So the problem is that if we continue to run at Gaming Knights it means everyone will need to be paying $10 at the door to Gaming Knights (nothing to do with SFFiG at all) and then later on down the track if we want to raise money of our own we need to charge you on top of that. I'm not too keen on that idea, ideally I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible, so everyone can join in.
I'm still trying to come up with new ideas and will let everyone know once we've come up with something, but if any of you have thoughts, please let me know.
Happy Greetings to all and whatever else you might like.
I hope everyone has had a good break, I have recovered from moving house, the horrors of Xmas and starting a new job.
So now it's time to get back to the serious side of life - SFFiG. We now have TRIVIA2 ready to go, just a bit of a snag though (and no it's not a half-eaten sausage), Gaming Knights has changed management once again since our last meet there and our new friends have a new way of doing things.
Apparently they are able to set up the room to suit us better, new furniture, etc. but will be charging $10 per person (this is charged as you come in the door so we don't have to confirm numbers prior to the day). This then gives you a $10 voucher to get drinks and snacks from the desk on the 2nd floor.
Being very different from our normal fee of $0 I was hoping to get some opinions first. Does this affect your likelyness to attend any given SFFiG night held there? Personally for me I would say yes, if I wasn't the [expletive deleted] organising it all.
So, the next question is does anybody have other ideas for venues we could use that are either free, or cheap. The fact that we would like to register the group in order to get insurance in order to do bigger and better things does mean we will one day be having a membership fee, so therefore we want to keep any potential venue costs low.

I totally support the idea. It may encourage us to to raise money for the club to go towards things like T- Shirts, functions etc, etc, etc.
Do you have a time and date for the trivia night?
Mark.

We got to see the movie, all three of us (meant all the more movie for us!)
The movie itself, after a while to think about it, I decided was not for me. It was mostly action, bood, death, semi-nakedness, etc.Which is great for those that like it, just not my cup of coffee.
I never read the original tale, so can't say how close it was. but it was interesting nevertheless. The animation was brilliant and the popcorn was in abundance :-D
As one of the most eager participants of the movie night, it is with much embarrasment that i send my apologies for the 'no-show' last night. David (my other half) is down with the flu, so I knew he'd not be going, but i often have issues with fatigue (not chronic fatigue so the docs tell me, but might as well be at times) and last night it all caught up with me at around 7 o'clock. I do hope the film did the story justice, and look forward to seeing it maybe at an earlier time slot. Hoping too, that enough members showed up to make the social outing a worthwhile experience.
Wishing everyone a great Christmas, hoping you share it with people you like and care for, have plenty to drink (always responsibly though) have loads of festive food, whatever tha may mean for you, and you can kick back, let the worries of the world, the dramas and tensions of life just flow away at least until we resume the normal, hectic craziness in the new year.
Stay well, safe and always carry a spare smile

saying New Photos. :) )
I was rather antisocial at the dw convention, as I am generally :)
see you all there... in the lobby or outside i assume. anyone want to

I can't seem to view your files, says 'Unable to retrieve album'... not sure what that's about. Any ideas?
I can offer you a lift as it would now be on my way back home anyway, should you deem me worthy first of course :-)
Actually it's possible we have met - at the Discworld Convention earlier this year. I was part of the committee and so remember your name as an attendee, but you know how it is, we all met so many people and it's difficult to remember over 300 faces!
I'm about to notify the bigger list about Sunday's movie (Beowulf), now set to 9:10pm Sunday @ Reading Cinemas, Waurn Ponds. That's right you get it exclusively 5 minutes earlier for being on the yahoo group.
Also, I was wondering if/when we go to the cinema (I am pretty sure I can make it on the 16th) would anyone be available to give me a lift home to Herne Hill? I am not sure if I trust someone I've never met but hopefully I'll meet you first, and I can walk home if I need to :)

Hi.
I've not introduced myself yet, I'm Renee, aka treasure.
I had a go at some logos you can view here -
http://au.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/SFFiG/photos/browse/69ec. I can go
back and edit them if anyone has any ideas.
Also, I was wondering if/when we go to the cinema (I am pretty sure I
can make it on the 16th) would anyone be available to give me a lift
home to Herne Hill? I am not sure if I trust someone I've never met
but hopefully I'll meet you first, and I can walk home if I need to :)

I would agree. The 23rd is far too close to Christmas for most people. I too am booked on that day.
I also agree about Polls - by the time you got the poll organised, then waited for people to respond, it would be Christmas 2008. This
is not meant to be a criticism on our members, it's just that not everyone is able to check their e-mails on a regular basis
Set the 16th, pick a movie, pick a time and let us know when and where.
I vote Beowulf, on the 16th, sometime in the afternoon.

try to stop in and add comments where I can to organise our movie night but the brain won't be operational at all times :-).Current prospects for our Christmas movie times as shown on the polls at the moment favour Friday evening and Sunday evening.Since there are also a few votes for Sunday daytime I'd lean towards a Sunday evening. So unless this changes drastically in the next week or so we're probably looking at Sundays the 16th or 23rd - any strong preferences either
way?As far as movies go Carmel suggested Beowulf and 1480, at our recent meeting we also had Golden Compass suggested.Any other suggestions before I set up a poll? Do we need a poll?~Ben--- In
