With great sadness we must report that veteran actor Don S. Davis
passed away on June 29, 2008. He was 65 years old.
Don co-starred on Stargate SG-1 for the show's first seven years,
helping to launch the enduring science fiction franchise. Davis played
Major General George Hammond, base commander and a father figure to
many of the show's characters.
He is also well-known for his portrayal of Major Garland Briggs in
Twin Peaks.
Off-screen, Don was beloved by the show's cast and crew. He departed
the show in 2003 due to a medical condition that restricted his
workload, but returned for several guest appearances on SG-1 and
Stargate Atlantis in the following years. Don worked hard to improve
his health, and continued to work both on screen and off until his death.
The following message was provided by Don's representative and his
wife, Ruby Fleming-Davis:
Dear Fans and Friends of Don S. Davis,
So many of you have been touched by not only the work and art of Don
S. Davis, but by the man himself, who always took the time to be with
you at the appearances he loved, that it is with a tremendous sense of
loss I must share with you that Don passed away from a massive heart
attack on Sunday morning, June 29th.
On behalf of his family and wife, Ruby, we thank you for your prayers
and condolences. A family memorial where Don's ashes will be scattered
in the ocean will take place in a few weeks, and should you wish to,
please make a donation to the American Heart Association in Don's memory.
Born August 4, 1942 in Aurora, Missouri and raised there, Don received
a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in theater and art
from Southwest Missouri State College in 1965. He then served three
years on active duty in the United States Army, entering as a Second
Lieutenant. He rose to the rank of Captain and was stationed in Korea
before completing his required tour of active duty.
Upon leaving the army, Don began working toward a Master's degree in
theater at Southern Illinois University, in Carbondale, Illinois, and
received his Master's degree in 1970. He taught at the University of
British Columbia for a decade before returning to SIU to complete his
coursework for a PhD in theater, receiving the degree in 1982.
Don's list of film and television credits is lengthy, dating back to
1982. He met Stargate co-star Richard Dean Anderson on the set of
MacGyver, where Don worked as a stunt double for actor Dana Elcar.
When production on Stargate SG-1 began in 1997, the producers tapped
Davis to play the base commander -- originally written to be a
by-the-book antagonist, but quickly softened by Don's own personality
and experience.
In 2003 Don married his soul mate and the great love of his life, Ruby
Fleming-Davis. The two have resided in British Columbia with their
three dogs, Teto, Ming and Charley.
Don's off-screen career as an artist blossomed especially in the years
since he left Stargate. A look at his Web site, DonSDavisArt.com,
reveals his tremendous gifts in painting, drawing, and woodcarving.
Don's final Stargate appearance is in Stargate: Continuum, the SG-1
DVD movie that will be released July 29 in North America and August 18
in the United Kingdom. He will also appear in the forthcoming films
"Vipers," "Woodshop," and "Far Cry," according to the Internet Movie
Database.
Many fans of Don's work have had the opportunity to meet him in
person, as he was also a regular face at fan conventions around the
world. Fans learned that behind General Hammond was a Southern
gentleman with a big heart, a no-nonsense attitude, and all the love
and respect one could imagine.
GateWorld's editors visited with Don in 2006, where he talked at
length about his career, his time on Stargate, and his feelings about
his fellow cast members. That two-part video interview, "Intimate
Portrait," may be found in the Interviews archive.
Services for Don S. Davis will be small and private in Vancouver. His
Web sites will be updated this week, and his obituary has been
published in the Vancouver Sun newspaper. In lieu of flowers or gifts,
the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart
Association in Don's memory.
Well done you guys. Just think, if you had won, there'd be all that extra work to do. Now you can enjoy the fruits of the group, without all the heartache of being President. ciao

I'm very pleased to announce that at the recent elections for the Doctor Who Club of Victoria, our very own member Judith McGuinness took the Presidency by a very close margin!
Congratulations to Judith and I look forward to seeing what she will be doing with the club in the coming year, including next April's 30th Anniversary for the club.
Also congratulations to another of our members, Craig Hill for keeping his seat as Vice President.

I've been asked to let everyone know that the Doctor Who Club of Victoria is having their AGM next Saturday (28th June) at the Northcote Town Hall from 1PM.
One of our own SFFiG members, Judith, is running for President this year so let's all give her what support we can (if you can actually manage to get there you need to be a member to vote, I believe you can sign up on the day - $25).
Also, just as important, series 4 of Doctor Who starts on the ABC the following day, beginning with the Christmas Special 'Voyage of the Damned'.
Hi all, Well I like the sound of all of your ideas so far. Even though I have been keeping my mind open to ideas, I still have no gone any further than a swap meet idea, where we trade our unwanted, excess, and pre-loved SF goodies with each other...or the obvious: to go as a group to any sci fi movies on the big screen, obvious, but I am short on ideas too.
One extra thought; there are many board games on the market, dating back to the 1930's probably. Surely some of us have games of an appropriate type that could be used for a games' night. This could be as simple as 8 people playing Star Trek Trivial Pursuit (which I think I have or maybe I have Star Wars) or as complex as a bunch more people, with several different games on the go at one time. Not as complex as D&D though
Will keep my thinking cap on though, and pilfer ideas from ohter people's groups, like a scavenger hunt..you know, find one Klingon warrior, two flux capacitors, a towel (A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta…wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat…wrap it around your head to ward off noxious fumes…any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it … win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with,) and one member of the Deathwok clan (excuse spelling)

Dear People,
Time for some input. I'm not going to say I'm stuggling for ideas, instead it's time to gather some ideas from our wider community. That sounds much better.
So what would you like to do? Tell us anything you'd like, no matter the logistics yet - someone may have an idea to make it work that you hadn't thought of.
Currently, short-term ideas include:
Show & Tell: Bring along your geeky possessions to show off.
Anime discussion: Tell everyone what your favourite anime is and why it should be their favourite as well!
Zone 3: Always a good excuse to shoot people.
Bowling: Fun, social, and then we can compete with other nearby sci-fi clubs :-D

You Want Suggestions? Here's just a few:
Movie Night at one of the cinemas (including a dinner)
Movie Night followed by ten pin bowling
TV Marathon: At another club I belonged to, we used to get people to
suggest their favourite Sci-Fi TV programs, and then program a random
selection of episodes and watch them over a long weekend. We screened
programs continuously, day and night!
Movie Marathon: Variation of the above, except with movies
*If a weekend is too long, we also had 24 hours non-stop and 12 hours
non stop
Games Days: Bring along your favourite board or computer game
Inter Club Activities: We used to have a wonderful time competing
with other Sci Fi Clubs in Cricket, Ten Pin Bowling, Soccer, Aussie
Rules etc. Something along those lines?
Inter Club meetings - where two or more clubs combine for one big meeting.
Meals: Take your pick between breakfast, lunch and dinner and get
together for a good old chin wag over something to eat
Walking Marathons: Follow a set of instructions to find certain
things around the town. Along the way, you may be expected to collect
things, spot things or answer some questions on your way around. Can
be a load of fun!
Karaoke: Only if your game!
Social Activities: Wool Museum, Ford Museum, tour of the Gaol, Mini
Golf or ordinary golf, Botanical Gardens, Fishing, Timezone.
That should give you some food for thought to start with!

True, you don't have to know Discworld at all to play, it all explains itself as you go. And afterwards we can recommend which books you should start with to learn The Way of Pratchett.
For all our Discworld fans, and those keen to learn more about the series, on Friday 6th June we'll be hosting a Significant Quest game!
Significant Quest is a fan-made game based on the Discworld setting where you become a God and collect believers from characters and pit them against your rival Gods, travelling around the Disc in an effort to be the number 1 God and crush all in your wake. Just a little friendly competition as far as Gods go.
The game works best with many players, so far the record is ten, let's try for bigger again!

Hi again,
I'll see what I can do. Totally alien to me at this stage, but what better way to become accustomed or familiarised with the game. Ciao

Bad news: i'm not going to be able to make it to the minicon after
all, so it is more than likely that we won't have a table there.
There has been talk of reviving the Swapmeet idea however - so Mark,
if you're still looking for an avenue to sell your airbrushings this
may be better - closer to home at least.
Sorry to poop the party,

The multi club mini con is here again. The MSFC, Starwalking, Austrek
and The Dr Who Club and others are getting together again for the
annual event, let's see if we can make it bigger than it has been in
the past. This year we are asking members to put together panels,
whether they be Star Trek V Star Wars or The Star Trek philosophies or
anything you like. Whatever it is, discuss it, arrange it, we can help
recruit volunteers if you are having trouble, and submit your idea by
the May Meeting or email us your idea at austrek1976@... .
Every year the other clubs put on a great panels, this year we want
Austrek to blow them away. Also as usual there will be dealers, food
and drinks. Please Contact us if you have any ideas.
Live long and Prosper

Hi,
At this stage, count me in. I will confer with my learned colleague (David) but he usually tags along wherever I go, without putting up too much of a fight. We may even have an interstate visitor (that's interstate...not intergalactic) who would love to join us.
I've just made a deal that will keep this club running (Enter Darth Vader).
Seriously, thanks to the good people at The Australian Discworld Convention Inc. SFFiG is now running under their legal banner. This means that we now have insurance to cover us for any events we want to run, and therefore means we can moe ourselves to the Girl Guides Hall (cost to the club: $30 for an evening).
So you are all invited to Trivia 2 - Return of SFFiG
Friday May 2, 7PM
Girl Guides Hall (33 Myers St)
Cost: $5
Tea & coffee provided
PRIZES!!!
FUN!!!
SCIFI!!!
This trivia is going to be an evolution on our first from last year, with regular quiz questions, games and laughter. Much inspiration from the recent triumphant return of Good News Week.
I'm doing a bit more advertising than normal for this one - we're trying to make this a big one. So if you'd like some flers to distribute in your own areas please email me and I will send you the documents.

Howdy y'awl,
David and I will be in on a trivia event. Obviously, we would prefer not to have to pay to the Gaming Knights, but as most places would slug you for the use of their premises, they are actually being generous by allowing the fee to be used in their canteen. And so, we are okay with the money thing. I am just hoping you/we can find somewhere ground floor, so my poor arthritic knees don't scream at me again. Stairs are not my friend.
I like the 3-4 notice too, so we can scour for fresh blood, so to speak. Glad that you are back in the saddle again, and hoping your brain hasn't atrophied too much from lack of quality tv viewing. Ciao
Carmel

Did have a date, but due to my own hesitation and just a pinch of procrastination (I have a lot of Star Trek episodes to get through and my Foxtel IQ will start deleting if I don't keep up with it!) we're going to have to postpone - just because we'd like at least 3-4 weeks advertising time. Attracting fresh blood is important to the survival of the club. Take that whichever way you like.
So the problem is that if we continue to run at Gaming Knights it means everyone will need to be paying $10 at the door to Gaming Knights (nothing to do with SFFiG at all) and then later on down the track if we want to raise money of our own we need to charge you on top of that. I'm not too keen on that idea, ideally I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible, so everyone can join in.
I'm still trying to come up with new ideas and will let everyone know once we've come up with something, but if any of you have thoughts, please let me know.
Happy Greetings to all and whatever else you might like.
I hope everyone has had a good break, I have recovered from moving house, the horrors of Xmas and starting a new job.
So now it's time to get back to the serious side of life - SFFiG. We now have TRIVIA2 ready to go, just a bit of a snag though (and no it's not a half-eaten sausage), Gaming Knights has changed management once again since our last meet there and our new friends have a new way of doing things.
Apparently they are able to set up the room to suit us better, new furniture, etc. but will be charging $10 per person (this is charged as you come in the door so we don't have to confirm numbers prior to the day). This then gives you a $10 voucher to get drinks and snacks from the desk on the 2nd floor.
Being very different from our normal fee of $0 I was hoping to get some opinions first. Does this affect your likelyness to attend any given SFFiG night held there? Personally for me I would say yes, if I wasn't the [expletive deleted] organising it all.
So, the next question is does anybody have other ideas for venues we could use that are either free, or cheap. The fact that we would like to register the group in order to get insurance in order to do bigger and better things does mean we will one day be having a membership fee, so therefore we want to keep any potential venue costs low.
