The Year of
Speculative Fiction – the SF Novel Challenge
With Lucy Sussex
Course:Speculative
fiction is all around us: in film, TV and the prognostications of Earth’s
future. It can vary from alternate worlds (Nazis win WW2), to near-future
thrillers, supernatural romances, space opera (Star Trek novels) and
dispatches from the frontiers of the human imagination. The challenge, in this series
of workshops, is to write a speculative fiction novel in 2009, workshop it and
learn how to market it – even sell it! Award-winning writer Lucy Sussex hosts
the challenge, which includes guest spots from editors, publishers and
publicists. Lucy Sussex is a writer in various genres, including
speculative fiction. She has won Ditmar and Aurealis awards, and been
shortlisted for the World Fantasy Guild and IGHW (International Guild of Horror
Writers) awards. To
be eligible, sample chapters and story outlines are required to be submitted by
Monday 2 March (max 1000 words).
Hiya,
If no-one else comes up with a viable option, you can always try St Laurnece Family Stores in Torquay Rd in Grovedale (next to Johhny Majors.) I volunteer there, and know that we get many tvs, they are only tested for electrical safety and basic functionality, but we do offer a refund if any electrical items are faulty, as long as the item is returned within a reasonable time (a few weeks) and you keep the receipt. We are one of the few (if not the only) op-shops to carry electrical goods, because we have a tester on staff (via head office.) I say YAY to the idea of a tv, with a view (har, har, unintended pun) to opening the group to movie or series watching (ugh, excuse the sentence construction please.)
If you want the tv brand, spanking new, I have contacts at JB, which gives you another option. Glad to see you plugging away with the ideas, because I'd love to see SFFIG succeed, and grow to encompass a larger membership, with loads of interesting and fun activities to share.
PS, I have a bunch of eager friends, raring to go for the next trivia night. (not the Dr Who one, the other one) Apparently they had a ball last time, and will bring extras to the next one. Just thought I'd make the idea worhtwhile for your consideration.
ciao

Greetings all, Happy New Year and a Joyous Religious Festive Period of Your Preference. With the new year comes a new beginning once again for SFFiG and it's time that those of us in charge (ie me) got behind myself and give myself a big boot in the necessary sections so that SFFiG can claim it's rightful place in the history books!
So here's the plan: SFFiG currently has in it's ownership - Money. This money _could_ be spent on the betterment of the club, by means of a television set. If we were to have a TV owed by the club it would mean we can then run weekly / fortnightly evenings of TV/movie nights, which I personally would love to do. It would mean we can have regular meets and any bigger events (trivia, games, etc.) can be organised instead of or around these regular meets. It can also help to attract new members as we can advertise a regular meeting time, and also is minimal organisation necessary, which helps in my currently busy and ever changing work schedule.
So if anyone has any suggestions of what or where to get a TV for a good deal please let us know. Guidelines for what the club eeds would be: Size - medium - big enough for a group of people to sit and watch together, but ot too big so is still easily transportable and storable. Cost - we can aim at around about a $200 range. We could go higher, but might take some more fudraising to do so first. Bear in mind I have a staff discount on all things ColesMyer related - anyone able to offer similar for relevant stores would be appreciated. Built in capabilities would be useful - though I do have a portable DVD player that I can led whenever necessary I beleive should be easy to hook up, it's only restriction is that it does not play certain copied discs, but is still quite useful for legitimate and some 'backed-up' discs.
Let's get this going soon so we can continue to share and expand our geeky worlds :-)

Hiya Ben,
Sorry to not use the link, but am at work, and haven't got the time to figure out what I'm doing wrong when I get there, that won't allow me to reply. So, I'll reply here...
Much as I'd love to come to the pix, esp to see any of the mentioned films, but I am already spoken for on Thursday. Boo, hoo. As for the Friday night fiasco, ... I was considering canvassing the Emos, mall rats and other flotsam of the Mall, to see if any of them wanted to hang instead, but gave up on that idea as being very BAD. Better luck next time. I saw the humour in it though. ciao

Firstly, apologies to all those who attended SFFiG Meet on Friday, or at least attempted to - as Centrepont was locked up shortly after 5pm. I've had a few messages from people who came along to be hurried out again by security guards. We won't be doing that at that time of day again :-)
So, to make up for this we're organising a last minute get together - a Movie at Village and coffee afterwards this Thursday around about midday.

Hi guys,
Much as I'd love to be there, I am on hospital duty Mondays after work. My dad is near his end, and we take round the clock (not overnight though) shifts, so I will have to miss this. I just seem to have lousy timing at the moment for all your hard work to put things on for us. Ciao

Don't forget that this coming Monday (18th August) there is a private screening of the new animated Clone Wars movie being hosted by The Shop: Gifts For the Geek, but also before that you have the chance to meet Matt Doran from Attack of the Clones (the Deathstick Dealer) and Matrix (Mouse)!
Matt will be in The Shop from 4-6pm on Monday signing autographs and then will be doing a talk before the movie at 6:30.
Tickets are available from The Shop: Gifts for the Geek (Centrepoint Arcade) for $30 - this includes an autograph as well as the movie.
