SFFiGly News!

Important SFFiG News:

Youdunnit Results:
The conclusion to last week's Youdunnit mystery night is here, after players took control of their favourtie characters for the night we discovered that Majin Buu (Dragonball Z) had been brutally beaten, and everyone in the room was a suspect. We interrogated everyone, for a while Korban Dallas (Fifth Element) was looking pretty suspicious, and in the final moments the lights went out and Captain Kirk (Star Trek) was found dead. However Korban was found not guilty since we did not get enough evidence by the time the game was over. Once everything was finished it was revealed that the whole time Dark Helmet (Spaceballs) was the real culprit!
We had a lot of fun and I'm planning on runing some youdunnit variants coming up, hopefully with more people to mix things up a bit :-)

Memberships reminder:
Seeing as we have just passed our first birthday this also means that all those people that generously paid for their annual membership on August 3rd last year will have reached the end of their memberships. However, as this was not mentioned earlier we're giving an extension until after our next event (date to be announced) so that those members can still get in for the cheaper price and get two door prize entries! If you have any questions about memberships feel free to speak to me, or Andrew Saunders, our Membership Officer.

Upcoming Events:
At every event look out for free tea & coffee as well as a door prize! A variety of prizes at each trivia night.

NEXT TIME AT SFFIG:

Currently we do not have a date set for our next event, but watch out for an announcement coming soon! See below for future events.

SFFiGly News!

Important SFFiG News:

Time to kick it back a notch:
A couple of months ago we decided to try to kick SFFiG up a notch. Bam! Now we are instead needing to kick it back a notch... bam. So far trivia has been more successful than other events so we will be continuing with our previously scheduled trivia, every 4 weeks, with our new format of TV/games/etc. early in the evening and trivia starting a little after. If you have any suggestions or comments about events you'd like to see, please send me an email - this club is for everyone, and we need everyone's opinions!

Smeagol wants a home:
We have a Smeagol statue, from the Two Towers box set, that is in need of a home. You can buy tickets for the raffle at just $1 each, available at any standard SFFiG meet. Raffle drawn at Lord of the Rings Trivia - July 3!
*If you can't make it to the trivia night but would like to buy some tickets just let me know before the ed of June and we can organise something.*

Ron & Hermione need to get drunk:
We have a beautiful set of Harry Potter mugs donated for raffle featuring Ron Weasley on one mug and Hermione Granger on the other. Tickets @ $1 each - on sale at Lord of the Rings trivia and drawn at Harry Potter trivia.

At every event look out for free tea & coffee as well as a door prize! A variety of prizes at each trivia night.

Greetings SFFiGlings,
I am going to need to change the calendar for all SFFiG events after next week due to a new roster I have for my work (normally I would be able to have a say in which days I work but I this time have been promoted from part time to full time).

Nevertheless SFFiG continuums. At the very least we can swap to alternate Fridays, but my weekends are now more open and therefore I would like a general opinion of what days would suit you - whether you're a regular, or haven't yet come along, or somewhere in between - would a Friday/Saturday/Sunday evening suit you any better or worse than the others?

I'd like to set new dates by Friday, so please send me an email!
Yes this does mean Star Trek Trivia will no longer be May 15, but will still be our next event... Star Trek XI movie still happening this Thursday.

Thanks,
~Ben

Hi all,
When I said we should see the premier of Star Trek together I did not realise the exact premier would be at 10:30am - which I assume will be out for most people...
So instead I've picked the 6:45pm screening.
So this Thursday, 7th May we shall see Star Trek XI, starring Zachary Quinto... and some other people (a big squee for Mr Q from me), at Village Cinemas, Ryrie st, Geelong.
Let's meet up at McDonalds between 6:00-6:30, for anyone who can make it then, otherwise we will hope to see you at the cinemas!
Bring friends, and don't forget to tell them, and everyone else you know, about Star Trek Trivia, Friday 15th May.

A quick amendment to our scheduled Red Dwarf Celebration this Friday, as I have been informed we will be having a few newbies coming along, all keen on the Red Dwarf Universe, we now have a programme for the evening:

6pm - door open, setup. Red Dwarf: Beet the Geek interactive quiz dvd playing - a group effort to complete the single player mission and get a perfect score!
7:30pm - Red Dwarf: Back to Earth - the newest episodes just released this Easter
9pm - Red Dwarf Trivia - covering all 9 series.

nb: all times are using the -ish unit of time, if you are a psychopathic watchmaker, please do not attend for your own safety and the safety of others.

See you there!

The following is a reproduction of a letter I received recently from
Symantec. I have taken out the tech talk and reproduced it in a way
you may understand.

Hackers have recently found a vulnerability in the hotmail system, and
have found a way to access any hotmail account that has a password
less than six characters long.

With this information, they have been using random hotmail accounts to
sent out phoney emails to everyone in your hotmail address book,
trying to lure them into known internet spam sites.

Whilst Microsoft, Hotmail, Symantec and McAffee's are all working to
rectify the problem, there are some simple steps you can take to
protect yourself.

First of all, change your password. preferably to something with the
following criteria:

* Ensure that it is at LEAST six characters long (ie: my password)

* Mix up your password with a combination of Capital and lower
case letters (ie: My PassWord)

* Add in Numbers at random places (ie: My P4assW0rd5)

* Add in Ascii Characters (!@#$%^&*()-+{}[]:;"',./\|~`) (ie:
My~P4assWord5!)

* The longer it is, and the more variety of Capital Letters, Lower
Case Letters, Numbers and Ascii Characters you can add in, the better
the password!

* As always, make it something you are likely to remember, but
would be hard for others to guess

Second, check your outbox regularly for messages you haven't sent.

Finally, don't click on any link that you are not sure about.

Next is the tricky, technical bit:

This mainly applies to Microsoft and Internet Explorer users:

If someone asks you in an email to click on a link to do something
(like to check out a site), if you are not 200% positive where the
link leads, right click in the link, copy the web address and paste
this into a search engine. If it is a fraud, Google, Yahoo, AltaVista
, Ask and some other search engines have lists of the latest
fraudulent web addresses. At the very least, it will give you
information about the page you are trying to go to!

Do not use GoMamma or most Meta search engines, as these have been
compromised in the past!

If anyone wishes to rewrite the above two paragraphs in a manner that
is easier to explain, feel free.

That's the long and short of it! Hope this helps!

Greetings all,
Here's what we have planed for SFFiG coming up:

February will be quiet, due to the fact that Mark and I are busy putting together the final pieces of the Australian Discworld Convention, along with the rest of the committee.
* Nullus Anxietas 2: the Australian Discworld Convention will be held in Melbourne from February 27-March 1. See www.ausdwcon.org for all the details.

But after that, to make up for a February of quiet geekiness:

* Friday, March 13th - Star Wars Trivia! - Based primarily on Star Wars on screen, test your knowledge of the Star Wars epic story and win fabulous prizes!
Be sure to spread the word - there are many Star Wars fans outside of the normal ScifFi community.
Guides Hall, 33 Myers St Geelong.
Doors open 6:30, starts at 7pm.
Cost: $5 non-members, $3 members

* Saturday, March 28th - Doctor Who Fun & Games - The Doctor Who Club of Victoria is making another visit to Geelong for a day of Doctor Who related activities.
More details closer to the event.

Spread the word! Come to the SFFiG side.

Huge thanks for keeping us safe from predators,as I am so cyber illiterate that I have to find a willing 12 yo to help me with that kind of thing. Keep up the good work, and PS David and I have been thru this nonsense when we ran Geelong Writers Inc too. It is NO fun.
ciao

Subject: [SFFiG] Gmail Compromise on the forum

To all members,

I am sorry to have to do this, but gmail has recently attracted a large amount of fraudulent
people.

It has got to the extent where I am receiving an average of 5 to 20 emails a week from
spammers with gmail accounts requesting sign up with our forum.

I have run out of enthusiasm in continuously blocking individual gmail addresses. I have
far better things to do with my time!!

So why am I contacting you? From the beginning of March, I will be blocking anyone with
a gmail account. This will sadly include existing members.

I therefore request anyone who logs on to the forum with a gmail account to change it to
something else, even if it means re-registering.

I apologise for having to do this, but it is unfair on all who run this forum to have to
continually block spammers with gmail accounts.

Please be assured that I have now secured this forum to the extent that external parties
and people awaiting registration can do nothing more than browse the forum. They
cannot contact individuals within the system, or look up your details unless they are an
approved user.

I will continue to protect your interests, as well as mine and keep this forum as safe as
possible, without making it too difficult to access.

Thank you for your time and understanding
