Right, I have some info, some ideas - so let's see where we can go
from here.
Our best venue possibility is the Girl Guides hall - because it is
big enough, comparitively cheap enough, and Gifts for the Geek can
sponsor us by allowing us to use their Public Liability Insurance
there.
Darren ath Gifts for the Geek, who many of you should know as a great
and wonderful human being, has been helping me with the ideas for
this (obviously)
He has a number of commercial-type contacts that we can get to come
down to have a proper event organised. This could be a good thing or
a not-so good thing, which is where I'd like some opinions as the
original idea started with stuff found in the bottoms of sheds (no
matter how many sheds you may have).
I'm thinking if we do make it the bigger idea - some shops, and
invitiations to indiviuals to book a table - then we probably go with
early December - allows time for organisations, advertising and
convenient for Christmas.
Comments/Suggestions?
I believe 'swap meets' actually originated with car enthusiasts. The idea was that people restoring vehicles often had all sorts of bits and pieces they'd accumulated over the years. And the original computer swap meets were in the same vein. Of course, now they are just an excuse for retailers to flog their wares on a Sunday.
My intent wasn't so much to 'swap' although there's nothing to stop that from happening if it suits people to do that. I suppose I see it just working like a stall at the Sunday markets, or a garage sale.
That doesn't mean you couldn't invite some retailers - eg., Gifts for the Geek, Card Mania, Minotaur (mmm, Minotaur).
(The idea actually came from the last garage sale we had. When I looked at all the stuff I was about to take to the op-shop, I realised that there were hundreds of SF videos, a couple of dozen SF books, SF posters, etc. And years ago I took a few boxes of stuff up to the Chapel Street Bazaar - Star Wars / Trek collectibles that were surplus to requirements. I know that not everyone who is into SF is into collectibles, but I suspect many of us are.)
You could probably charge something like $5 or $10 for a stall to help cover costs (discount for SF Club members, of course ;) maybe something more for retailers. Don't know. Then you'd just need to get some tables, find a venue, and work out the advertising (Ben, this is why you get paid the big bucks ... I haven't seen or heard of it being done locally anywhere. Maybe if you put the word out through AusTrek or some other clubs you could get some expressions of interest, or they might tell you not to waste your time. Either way, it might be worth an email.)
Food for thought.

Hi Two Sheds (You must have been expecting that :-) )
I love the idea of a swap meet, I'd like to hope I can find some things that I could bring along, not sure off the top of my head.
I definitely agree though that we want more people likely to come along - so let's give it some time to discuss, then we can choose a date and I'll be happy to print up some ads and distribute them.
So anyone else have comments/suggestions for this? Guidlelines for swap meets (I've never actually been to one)?
I was tidying up the shed (i have two sheds...) and noticed that I have a surplus of junk - much of it SF or SF-related. (Spare flux capacitors, that sort of thing.)
I don't know how many other people are in the same boat, but it occurred to me that maybe a 'genuine' SF swap-meet might be fun - if there was enough interest... You'd want to be assured of a reasonable attendance to make it worth the effort, I guess
I could easily fill a table (or ten...)
Just a thought.
Cheers,
David

Hi
I'm Gabrielle and have just joined (found out about you from
Davencarmel) I've been reading SF since I was 15 (that's 42 years
ago!). The idea of a swap meet sounds great - I don't have any flux
capacitors or spare parts for the Tardis but I do have a fair few
older paperbacks that I'd be happy to swap for some others (fresh to
me). How would it work? People pay for items then go and buy at
another stall, or direct barter?
I'd also be happy to swap books as a loan on a one-on-one basis, as
long as that person swears that they will take good care of them and
return them promptly. I prefer the newer writers, David Brin, Greg
Bear, John Brunner, Kim Stanley Robinson (the 'Mars' series' wow!)
and some of the not-so-new ones, eg Ursula Le Guin, Poul Anderson. I
like good themes and good characterisation; I find first contact and
alien relations pretty fascinating, genetic engineering and nono-
technology can be interesting, some cyber-fi is okay but not all.
Anyone out there have similar tastes and interested in swapping
books for a couple of weeks?

Greetings to all our new members, good to see new faces as well as
our familiars appearing.
Also good to see people coming out of the Geek-closet, as a proud
Geek myself I say congratulations! After all, what's in a Geek? Just
a lot of goey bits like everyone else... perhaps some midichlorians
too.
I'd like everyone to make themselves feel at home here - make use of
the files, photos, etc. sections as you see appropriate.
I'd also like to some people be able to run their own sessions
through our club - if it's sci-fi geeky then just do it. It could be
a presentation, a discussion of your favourite movie - we have the
big TV available on booking if you'd like to share a DVD with the
group, or anything else you might think of - just let me know and
we'll organise it!
oh, and thanks Mark for the link regarding time travel - I've checked
my sink but found nothing so far, not giving up yet! I'll let you all
know if I find myself in there...

G'day one and all and welcome to the weird and wacky world of Science
Fiction.
My name is Andrew Saunders AKA Duggan - Editor of Sonic Screwdriver -
the official newsletter of the Doctor Who Club of Victoria (Hows that
for a cheap plug?! ;-)
It is nice to see an official Science Fiction Club Start up here in
Geelong. We have quite a few members out this way, and I'm sure
they'll be glad to know that you exist.
I look forward to meeting many of you at upcoming meetings, and hope
to get to know you.
In the meantime, welcome aboard!
An update on the minicon info (in full for those that have only recently been added to the list, updates in italics):
Minicon in Geelong!
Held at the Girl Guide's Hall, Geelong (33 Myers st - not otherwise as I had told some people)
Saturday, 23rd June
A small entry fee (likely only a few dollars)
Come along and meet people, shop and listen to discussion panels.
Again, more info as it comes to me...
As for the club's next event: Doctor Who: Army of Ghosts & Doomsday
Doctor Who series 3 begins on the ABC on the 28th of June, so we're showing the final double-episode of series 2 beforehand.
When: Monday 25th June, 7pm
Where: Gaming Knights 3rd floor, Rock O'Cashel Lane (off Lt Malop st)
In other random news: Doctor Who is coming back to Australian TV (yes I did mention that, but it's my favourite so put up with it).
Firstly we get the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood on Monday the 18th on channel Ten - a new series following the Torchwood institute (Cardiff branch) as they track down aliens and protect the world, just like Doctor Who, but with adult bits.
ABC has the Christmas Special on Thursday the 28th. Then Saturday 30th has the first episode of series 3 - 'Smith and Jones', the show continues weekly from there - watch it, it's excellent.
If you have received this email twice, please let me know. If you would rather not receive these emails also let me know. Any other questions... you know what to do.
Hi guys.
Great to meet you all. I'm Carmel's other half.
I've been told that I'm a geek and I'm not too sure how I feel about
that. I don't think I qualify. But perhaps you can help me. I'll
describe the room in which I sit as I type this...and you be the
judge.
Working clockwise, from the left.
A large (original) framed print of an Atlas booster launch from the
early days of the space program.
A bookcase, which is supposed to house all the books which are NOT
SF. Nevertheless, there is a certain amount of Orwell, Asimov and
Crighton as they just don't seem to fit anywhere else.
Reaching my desk, we have two plastic dinosaurs next to the keyboard
in memory of Wash (Serenity) a large brass telescope, a space shuttle
pencil sharpener, and sitting on the printer is a cool battery
operated Spiderman who climbs up a string in his chest.
Behind the desk are two genuine NASA PR photos from the Apollo 16
mission, framed, and autographed by Charlie Duke. Who I met in, of
all places, Grovedale.
Above the photos is a shelf with 9 robots on it.
Moving to the next wall is the H.R. Giger wall. Two posters, Two
framed album covers for which he provided the artwork, and a glass
shelf supporting a couple of Aliens. Shoved next to the filing
cabinet is the 2005 Star Wars Poster calander - it's happy there, and
is only on standby in case we suddenly, inexplicably find another
place to hang something on the walls. I hope Giger doesn't mind.
Turn the corner and we hit the bookcase - more a book-wall.
Top shelf - Two computer game boxes on display (Starship Titanic and
Ubik) three more robots, a Star Trek TNG talking moneybox, a Planet
of the Apes snap-together model kit of Caesar, a hat which says 'do
not use this brain - abnormal,' and a large wookie.
Working through the bookcase from top left to bottom right, we have
How To Win at Space Invaders... actually, I can see that this could
get out of hand. Lets just say that the SF DVDs are in their own
quarrantined area, as are the SF books. The books are arranged
alphabetically with the exception of Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut,
Philip K Dick and Michael Marshall Smith, coz there are just too many
of them. In the non-fiction section, I suppose you'd have to say
that books about Science Fiction, the space program, and robots have
disproportionate representation.
Turn the corner again, and you are at the door. The door has a white
towel on it - limited edition Hitchhikers Guide towel. Look out the
door and you can see two robots on a shelf, because they have spilled
out of the study and are taking over.

Welcome Carmel, I'm glad you discovered the rest of us geeks. Yes, I
agree, I've been watching Sci-Fi for 30 years and it has only been
recently that I realized I'm a geek. My children say it to me all the
time, but had no comprehension of it til I walked in a shop called The
Shop Gifts for Geeks. I loved absolutely everything in the shop and
when I walked out I read the name of the shop, and I realized..."I'm a
geek" and proud of it. I'm a Truckie, I ride motorbikes and into
muscle cars, I have tattoos and I'm a geek. Just don't add up does it?

Carmel, 40+, two adult kids (surely that's a contradiction) and a
hubby, all of whom like our SF in one form or another. Basically, I
love a good movie, good book, comic, album (cd or vinyl) or tv series,
and odly enough, a fair few of my faves seem to be SF.

Me of the coolness factor 10, but alas, I am.
I am a writer, both fic and non fic, but do lousy SF myself, so leave
that to those with the gift. I work with disabled children and do heaps
of volunteer work.
I cannot say how much I can contribute to a group like this as my
knolwedge, although extensive, is hampered by memory problems, unless
of course, it is related to anything by Joss Wheadon (we're not worthy,
we're not worthy.)
Yay, to the instigators of this club and best wishes for its success.

I am pleased to bring you all early information about Geelong's first Minicon!
The minicon is a one-day event where you can come to see various stalls, discussion panels and whatever else may be organised on the day - all focused on the Sci-Fi theme. Geek Heaven! If you've never been to a full convention before, then this is a great place to start.
Meet like-minded people, buy gifts (for yourself), collectables, learn about new areas of fandom.
I don't have full details just yet, but can tell you to keep Saturday, 23rd June free. It will be held at the Girl Guides Hall, in Geelong.
I'll bring you all more info when I can!
Mark your calendars and save your moneys!
And don't forget History in ScFi next Wednesday (12th) At Gaming Knights!
Thanks to all those that made it to our trivia night earlier this month, we had a great time, trivia was played, brains were stumped multiple times, prizes were won by all! Really, we had so many donations from Gaming Knights, Gifts for the Geek and Mind Games that we had something for everyone with a few bits left over for our next trivia night (which will be bigger and better than the last - maybe a couple of easy questions this time).
But now for our next meetup: We present a presentation, in technicolour! We've been looking at some of the facts and events from as many of the scifi greats, and not-so greats and have drawn some startling revelations. Prepare to be amazed, astounded and astonished as we unveil the hidden mysteries and conspiracies from the past and then move on to the rest of the alphabet of adjectives as we gaze into the future!
In other words we've made a complete history of the world, using Star Trek, Doctor Who, Aliens, Harry Potter and any other thing that we could find - and it all makes sense!
What you need to know:
HISTORY IN SCIFI
When? 6th June, 7pm - 9pm
Where? Gaming Knights, 3rd floor (Rock O'Cashel Lane, off Little Malop St)
Why? Because
Bring yourselves, bring your friends, bring your moose (optional)
If you have received this email twice, please let me know. If you would rather not receive these emails also let me know. Any other questions... you know what to do.
Howdy all, my name is Mark, been a Sci-Fier for the past 30 years, and
I can never get enough of it. Started watching Dr Who, moved onto BSG
original and totally snowballed from there. I love Stargate, Star
Trek, Star Wars so on and so on. If it's Sci-Fi I'm watching it. It's
about time someone started a Sci-Fi Club in Geelong, they beat me to
it. I've been going on the following web site.
http://www.hostingphpbb.com/forum/index.php?mforum=gasbo
It's a great place to chat to other Sci-Fiers around Australia. My
user name there is DeepLord. Although that is a great website nothing
beats getting together to chat and carry out activities. I went to the
Trivia night though I didn't win I still got a prize for the night.
I got my 14 yr old step son invovled too, who won a few points on the
night. Anyway that's enough from me hope to see you all at the next
meet.
Mark.
Glad to meet you, Rob & Phil!
Wish I could be there on Thursday, but I'm already booked up. Hope it
goes well, though!

I am 22!!! I'm in a band called One Year Past, I try to write story's
sometimes, I like cookies, I watch too many movies...
There is not a month that goes by without seeing at least one film an
the cinema. My dvd collection consists mostly anything sci-fi or
horror.... I like fantasy and romantic comedy's too. Mainly though I
watch old time movies, B movies and classics alike... Plan 9,
Dracula... I love the Aliens series and anything Tim Burton... But of
course I'm an 80's child so I grew up on "The Sacred Four" being The
Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Legend and The Never Ending Story!
I would love to see this club take the step into widening sci-fi fans
views on sci-fi, being allot of sci-fi geeks watch one or two series
over and over and ignore the stepping stones of science cinema. I
would love to be a part of that and offer my services, dvd collection
and movie collection towards movie nights... hell, I would love to be
IN CHARGE of movie nights like fortnightly or monthly where I drag my
computer in, connect it up and subject every one to black and white
classics, low budget schlock, foreign giant monsters and other screwed
up video footage I can get my hands on...

well, its not really... its text on computers.
But its about me.
I was in the paper today...

Good to see so many people turn up at Gifts for the Geek to see Don today! I hear around 200 people went through, obviously a lot more sci-fi fans in the woodwork than it seems :-)
I meant to add to our advertisement from last week a note about our sponsors - very important!
* Gaming Knights are supplying venue of course, as well as support and advice from Bear from Gaming Knights.
* Gifts for the Geek will supply prizes and Darren there has been much help in the way of contacts and encouragement.
* Mind Games for prizes as well, Kevin of Mind Games for support.
All three of course have also been advertising the club.
Good point on intros - I should probably do that too!
I'm 24 years old, married with 2 kids. I work part time in child care and have recently been involved in the committee for Nullus Anxietas: The First Australian Discworld Convention. I'm mad about Doctor Who and make it my life's goal to obtain a plushy Dalek.
I'm a relative newcomer to sci-fi fandom - though one of my favourite movies as a child was The Dark Crystal I didn't see Star Wars: A New Hope until 1997. But what I lack in experience I make up for in enthusiasm! After becoming involved with the Discworld Convention in 2004 I have been to other conventions and sci-fi clubs and have loved the community feeling of a room full of geeks - all being excited over the new Doctor Who, or the latest anime, and debating Star Wars vs Star Trek (Yoda could take Picard any day).
So that's why we're starting a sci-fi club for geelong, because we need one - meet new people, make it an outlet to relieve yourself of that thought you're dying to tell someone but nobody understands what you're talking about.
We're also aiming to be a family-friendly group, so Phil your son is welcome if he wants to come along.
I haven't heard of the Uplift series - could you tell us a bit on what it's about?
Looking forward to seeing this list getting off the ground a bit more, expeciting some more interest as we advertise some more.
Just thought I'd introduce myself! :D
I'm Phil, from Clifton Springs. I'm 40 years old, married with a ten
year old son, and a confirmed sci-fi geek. :)
God, sounds like I'm at an AA meeting or something!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the meetings if they get off the ground
- should be interesting.
For anyone who hasn't read it, by the way, I'm about halfway through
the first of David Brin's "Uplift" series at the moment: "Sundiver".
Excellent story, so far!
Cheers, and I'll hopefully see you soon (my wife, Janetta, is also
interested - she's a confirmed geek as well!)
Phil
