Dear all
Apologies for any inconveniences but the date of our club discussion is actually Saturday 17th, not 18th.
Therefore Alan Moore is to be ignored, instead we can celebrate the day being the 37th birthday of the computer mouse, from Douglas Engelbart's patent on November 17th, 1970. Everyone give a big Click for Doug!

Brainstorming Ideas for events
And Much More! (Seas, Ships and Ceiling Wax are all tentative items at this stage)

The club has been going for roughly six months now, and our email list has grown quite well. So I feel it's time to bring other people interested in helping run the club together to help it carry on into the future (maybe in a hovercar or something like that).
We will be needing a financial membership system at some stage, to cover things such as a regular newsletter and the club's insurance, something we will be needing if we hold any more events like Martin Pearson a few weeks back, a big thanks to Darren at Gifts for the Geek for helping us out to make that happen!

So if you're interested in having your say on what our club should be doing in the future come along to Gaming Knights (3rd floor) on Saturday the 18th of November at 3pm. You don't have to have anything to do with committee work, that will be for just those of us that enjoy pain at a later time.

Coincidentally this will also be the date of Alan Moore's birthday. We all know Alan from the original League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta graphic novels. Happy Birthday Alan.

So once again that is:
Sat 18 November
3pm
Gaming Knights 3rd floor (Rock O Cashell Lane - off Lt Malop St)

Greetings people,
Mark and I have been plastering parts of Geelong with advertising for Martin Pearson's show, but we'd like your help too, where you can. Martin is coming to Geelong the day he gets back from the Phillipines, and before that he will have been to Brisbane and Darwin, so we want to make this worth his coming.
Having said that, I do know Martin and he is a truly wonderful and enjoyable man just to know. No matter how many people turn up I'd guaruntee a good time.

So I'm attaching the .doc files of the flyers and posters we're using, it your workplace / school / other club or organisation, etc. will be willing to display them then please do. Otherwise we've done the majority of Geelong city and Pakington street, if you are willing to approach bookshops, cafes, etc. then that would be muchly appreciated!

See you all there, and please remember to contact me privately if you'd like to pay early for a $5 discount :-)

Hi all,
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, here's my catch-up contribution;
I like Beta Victoria - for the geeky explanation, I'm a bit concerend about how it comes across pre-explanation though, and you can't always explain it to people if it's on a poster / ad / etc.
We've also had SFIG: Science Fiction In Geelong (could also be Speculative Fiction - covering Fantasy, Horror and Sci-Fi as I often do myself) I like acronyms so I think this is my current favourite.
Also I am fond of Sci-on. So I will put my toop three in as:
1. SFIG
2. Beta Victoria (or something similar)
3. Sci-on

I agree with Mark, we do need to discuss this finally in person, it's just good to get some brainstorming done prior to that.
We'll organise some kind of meet soon, there's a couple of things in planning at the moment. Including the swap meet idea - still trying to work out insurance issues for that, but looking at December.

More from me when there's more.
~Ben

I really like the idea of a 50's 60's logo. I love that sort of Sci-Fi advanced but somehow backwards, like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." love that movie.

Hello Gabrielle,

In regards to your book search I can recommend two places. The first is Barwon
Booksellers which is located in Geelong. The second being
http://www.suzs-space.com if
the book you are after isn't on that site you can register your interest and
they will try and
get a hold of a copy for you. Not to mention the amount of stock they don't have
listed on
their website.

Cheers
~Mark

I like the idea of Beta, but Victoria sounds a bit Victorian, no pun intended. I also liked Sci-On ( my apologies to who suggested it I can't remember who) But I thought it needed another name with it, maybe something like Beta Sci-On.........something or rather.
I really like the idea of a 50's 60's logo. I love that sort of Sci-Fi advanced but somehow backwards, like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." love that movie.

I really like the concept, whether or not we use the logo design!

Fantastic!

I hestitate to mention my suggestion - mainly because the explanation of the logic is geeky to the power of several thousand.  But here goes...

 Beta Victoria

(now the explanation - and apologies to those who got it immediately...)

Stars within a system are given greek prefixes, in order, based on magnitude.  Eg., Alpha Centauri, Tau Ceti.   So, if Victoria was a constellation, then the 'brightest' star would be Melbourne, making Melbourne Alpha Victoria... Coz we're next in line, we'd be Beta...

Tragic, innit?

On the other hand, our initals would be BV (as opposed to the slightly better known VB) which would make it diabolically easy to design a logo based upon unashamedly ripping off their rather well known logo.  It isn't a terribly SF-ish logo, admittedly, but then maybe we could put a lightning bolt through it.  Or surround it with a few electrons in orbit around it, like in any old-school B Grade SF of the 50's & 60's involving RADIATION (whooo, scary!)

And because our logo resembled a beer company logo, it might attract people to conventions & events who would not otherwise turn up...

Or land us in court....

Damn, it's even lamer when I see it in print!

Sorry,

David.

Ben I found this site last week and it is really good. It's a really
good forum site and quick and easy to post and reply to messages. It's
not a chat site but different sheds for different threads. I set one
up for my Airbrushing discussions.

I agree Ben GSFC looks to mush like a footy club. Sci-on has got my vote, but I think a name before or after it is needed, but I do like it.

Hello again.
Less waffly email this time.
Starting now.

The Club needs a name.
Make suggestions.
We already have a few;
* Guild of Geelong Geeks (GoGG) or Geelong Geek Guild (GGG) and other
variants.
* Scion, or Sci-on
* Geelong Geeks
* Geelong Science Fiction Club
* Sci-Fi Nerds, Geeks, Dorks
* Moya's Crew
* Jedi Knights
* Alien Technologies

Personally I'm not keen on Geelong Science Fiction Club - as it can be
shortened to GSFC - which is too similar to GFC. But that's just me :-)

Before moving on to new and wonderful things, here's a quick report
of what happened over the weekend;

Geek Games extravaGanza - an enjoyable night, played a few games,
discovered what wa popular - mainly the Smegity Smegs. We may do
another similar event in the future so stay tuned.
Ultimate Showdown brought 38 characters together to do battle in a
contest of power, wit and (mostly) popularity. It all came down to a
battle between the Doctor, a Dalek, Severus Snape and Miss Piggy! The
Doctor was put against Snape and lost on the basis that both were
loveable, but the Doctor was expendable because of regeneration. This
put the Dalek against Piggy - a very close call. The Dalek won,
though I believe it came out very battered. Finally Dalek vs. Snape -
the Ultimate Showdown. I knew who I was backing and it won - the
Dalek!

Alan Ruck Day on Sunday was very interesting - a glimpse at the
fantastic looking new Star Trek fan film: Of Gods And Men. This isn't
just any fan film, it's starring Alan Ruck and many other cast from
the various Star Trek series'. We're told the first part will be
released online in September. www.startrekofgodsandmen.com
Apart from that, Alan Ruck is a very friendly person - he made a
point to shake everybody's hand and introduce himself in the
beginning. He was happy to chat about whatever and whoever we wanted.

That's enough waffling from me for now - on to my next email :-)

Thanks Carmel,

As an addition to these games I will advise those of you on this list
(as a thank-you to being on the list, those other non-list peoples
won't know): Be there first to choose your adopted character, and
join a team. Characters are limited to one per person, teams will be
limited as well, depending on the number of people arriving.

Any more nominations need to be in by tomorrow (Friday) midday, I'll
add a few more in for numbers (with help from Christopher), we can
always kick some out if there's too many;
Neo
Mr Smith
Hiro Nakamura
Duck Dodgers
Marvin the Martian
Dave Lister
Astroboy

begin next Friday.You've probably seen versions of it before - it's
been done at various sci-fi cons, and probably more well known is
Celebrity Deathmatch - the TV show version. Also, see
http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/ultimate+showdown/ , or not if you
don't like cartoon violence :-)Our version will be comparitivuely low
budget, no animation or claymation (feel free to bring your play-
dough if you really want to though).What we do is pit characters
against characters, from all different series, stories and universes
in the Ultimate Showdown. On the night we will periodically call a
vote between two randomly picked characters and see who wins. It
could be chosen by likeliness, or by popularity - it's all up to the
vote.So before then we need to choose the contestants. Choose your
favourite characters from anywhere! Since there is a probability
thatsome entrants will need to be culled to create the correct number
for a tournament follow these guidleines;Entrants should be
preferably heard of, even if you don't know the series well (ie no
minor characters)A balance of Good and Evil is preferable, a variety
of genders, backgrounds etc. will be aimed for.But for now just
suggest characters, the more the better. I'll set a limit closer to
the date when we have a good idea of the size it should reach.I'll
also post a few suggestions later to help give you some ideas.~Ben--

Ok, here's a quick list to get us started:
Batman
The Joker
Luke Skywalker
Emperor Palpatine
Captain Picard
Borg Queen
Kermit the Frog
Miss Piggy
Godzilla
King Kong
The Doctor
A Dalek
The Powerpuff Girls
Harry Potter
Gandalf

Add more from the same stories, or different ones - add as many as you want!

You've probably seen versions of it before - it's been done at
various sci-fi cons, and probably more well known is Celebrity
Deathmatch - the TV show version. Also, see http://www.weebls-
stuff.com/toons/ultimate+showdown/ , or not if you don't like cartoon
violence :-)

Our version will be comparitivuely low budget, no animation or
claymation (feel free to bring your play-dough if you really want to
though).

What we do is pit characters against characters, from all different
series, stories and universes in the Ultimate Showdown. On the night
we will periodically call a vote between two randomly picked
characters and see who wins. It could be chosen by likeliness, or by
popularity - it's all up to the vote.

So before then we need to choose the contestants. Choose your
favourite characters from anywhere!
Since there is a probability thatsome entrants will need to be culled
to create the correct number for a tournament follow these guidleines;
Entrants should be preferably heard of, even if you don't know the
series well (ie no minor characters)
A balance of Good and Evil is preferable, a variety of genders,
backgrounds etc. will be aimed for.

But for now just suggest characters, the more the better. I'll set a
limit closer to the date when we have a good idea of the size it
should reach.
I'll also post a few suggestions later to help give you some ideas.

I'd removed the last poster of this nature, obviously they're signing back up again - whether it's automated or not I don't know but I'm putting the list on moderated new members for a while to prevent this.
