Greetings all,

Getting to this before I forget - I'm not going to be around a lot
for the next couple of weeks to to moving house. I will try to stop
in and add comments where I can to organise our movie night but the
brain won't be operational at all times :-).

Current prospects for our Christmas movie times as shown on the polls
at the moment favour Friday evening and Sunday evening.
Since there are also a few votes for Sunday daytime I'd lean towards
a Sunday evening.
So unless this changes drastically in the next week or so we're
probably looking at Sundays the 16th or 23rd - any strong preferences
either way?

As far as movies go Carmel suggested Beowulf and 1480, at our recent
meeting we also had Golden Compass suggested.
Any other suggestions before I set up a poll? Do we need a poll?

~Ben

HI,
It is prob too early to choose a film, cause the ones I know of may be over by two weeks before Christmas, but my two possibles, (if they're still showing, duh) are Boewulf and 1480 (I think that's correct. )

We discussed having a get-together roughly 2 weeks before Christmas
where we go to see a current movie at a cinema, then perhaps go

I've created a poll for working out days/times for this, we just need
to work out movies as well.
So please suggest some movies you'd like to see, within the next week

G'day all,

Just mucking around, I have developed two possible contenders for the
club's logo. Posted under the Photo's section.

We discussed having a get-together roughly 2 weeks before Christmas
where we go to see a current movie at a cinema, then perhaps go
somewhere for coffee, etc. afterwards.

I've created a poll for working out days/times for this, we just need
to work out movies as well.
So please suggest some movies you'd like to see, within the next week
I'd like to put up another poll for the movie so we can decide what
we'll be going to see.

Sorry about the lateness of this reminder but... I forgot :-)

That's right tomorrow is the day we are meeting to discuss future club events, club structure (memberships, advertising, committee, etc.) and generally make sure you have your input on what our club becomes.
This club was started to benefit everyone interested so I'd like to hear as many different ideas and expectations you can bring.

See you there - Saturday 17th, Gaming Knights, Rock O'Cashel Lane (off Lt Malop st) *3pm*

Dear all
Apologies for any inconveniences but the date of our club discussion is actually Saturday 17th, not 18th.
Therefore Alan Moore is to be ignored, instead we can celebrate the day being the 37th birthday of the computer mouse, from Douglas Engelbart's patent on November 17th, 1970. Everyone give a big Click for Doug!

The club has been going for roughly six months now, and our email list has grown quite well. So I feel it's time to bring other people interested in helping run the club together to help it carry on into the future (maybe in a hovercar or something like that).
We will be needing a financial membership system at some stage, to cover things such as a regular newsletter and the club's insurance, something we will be needing if we hold any more events like Martin Pearson a few weeks back, a big thanks to Darren at Gifts for the Geek for helping us out to make that happen!

So if you're interested in having your say on what our club should be doing in the future come along to Gaming Knights (3rd floor) on Saturday the 18th of November at 3pm. You don't have to have anything to do with committee work, that will be for just those of us that enjoy pain at a later time.

Coincidentally this will also be the date of Alan Moore's birthday. We all know Alan from the original League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta graphic novels. Happy Birthday Alan.

Greetings people,
Mark and I have been plastering parts of Geelong with advertising for Martin Pearson's show, but we'd like your help too, where you can. Martin is coming to Geelong the day he gets back from the Phillipines, and before that he will have been to Brisbane and Darwin, so we want to make this worth his coming.
Having said that, I do know Martin and he is a truly wonderful and enjoyable man just to know. No matter how many people turn up I'd guaruntee a good time.

So I'm attaching the .doc files of the flyers and posters we're using, it your workplace / school / other club or organisation, etc. will be willing to display them then please do. Otherwise we've done the majority of Geelong city and Pakington street, if you are willing to approach bookshops, cafes, etc. then that would be muchly appreciated!

See you all there, and please remember to contact me privately if you'd like to pay early for a $5 discount :-)

Just a thought for another name. Which is totally left field from what
have been coming up with. Hopefully not in use yet. "The Off Worlders"
Thoughts? comments?

Hi all,
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, here's my catch-up contribution;
I like Beta Victoria - for the geeky explanation, I'm a bit concerend about how it comes across pre-explanation though, and you can't always explain it to people if it's on a poster / ad / etc.
We've also had SFIG: Science Fiction In Geelong (could also be Speculative Fiction - covering Fantasy, Horror and Sci-Fi as I often do myself) I like acronyms so I think this is my current favourite.
Also I am fond of Sci-on. So I will put my toop three in as:
1. SFIG
2. Beta Victoria (or something similar)
3. Sci-on

I agree with Mark, we do need to discuss this finally in person, it's just good to get some brainstorming done prior to that.
We'll organise some kind of meet soon, there's a couple of things in planning at the moment. Including the swap meet idea - still trying to work out insurance issues for that, but looking at December.

More from me when there's more.
~Ben

I like the idea of Beta, but Victoria sounds a bit Victorian, no pun intended. I also liked Sci-On ( my apologies to who suggested it I can't remember who) But I thought it needed another name with it, maybe something like Beta Sci-On.........something or rather.
I really like the idea of a 50's 60's logo. I love that sort of Sci-Fi advanced but somehow backwards, like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." love that movie.

Hello Gabrielle,

In regards to your book search I can recommend two places. The first is Barwon
Booksellers which is located in Geelong. The second being
http://www.suzs-space.com if
the book you are after isn't on that site you can register your interest and
they will try and
get a hold of a copy for you. Not to mention the amount of stock they don't have
listed on
their website.

Cheers
~Mark

I hestitate to mention my suggestion - mainly because the explanation of the logic is geeky to the power of several thousand.  But here goes...

 Beta Victoria

(now the explanation - and apologies to those who got it immediately...)

Stars within a system are given greek prefixes, in order, based on magnitude.  Eg., Alpha Centauri, Tau Ceti.   So, if Victoria was a constellation, then the 'brightest' star would be Melbourne, making Melbourne Alpha Victoria... Coz we're next in line, we'd be Beta...

Tragic, innit?

On the other hand, our initals would be BV (as opposed to the slightly better known VB) which would make it diabolically easy to design a logo based upon unashamedly ripping off their rather well known logo.  It isn't a terribly SF-ish logo, admittedly, but then maybe we could put a lightning bolt through it.  Or surround it with a few electrons in orbit around it, like in any old-school B Grade SF of the 50's & 60's involving RADIATION (whooo, scary!)

And because our logo resembled a beer company logo, it might attract people to conventions & events who would not otherwise turn up...

Or land us in court....

Damn, it's even lamer when I see it in print!

Sorry,

David.

I'm with Lucy I don't want to be labeled either and I'm not totally comfortable with Geek either, sorry guys.
I think it would be a good idea to discuss this at a meeting one night too Ben. I'm all for modern technology but it's only a tool, I much prefer social interaction. Is there a time limit on choosing a name? To me a name has to be right, mean something not just a name pulled out of a hat. I personally would like a name that has meaning, sounds cool, and just rolls off the tongue.

Good point Lucy,
On that note - do people feel comfortable with the word Geek?
I know I'm proud of it, but not everyone is.

Ben I found this site last week and it is really good. It's a really
good forum site and quick and easy to post and reply to messages. It's
not a chat site but different sheds for different threads. I set one
up for my Airbrushing discussions.
