Book synopsis

The author sets out to examine migration movements to Australia and
the role of successive immigration legislation: from the notorious
White Australia Policy through to the contemporary multicultural
agenda. Her detailed case study sheds new light on the experiences of
Polish migrants of the 1980s and their children in Melbourne.
The story of successive waves of migration - particularly following
the Second World War - and the influence of these on multicultural
Australia provide the context of this study. Of particular interest
is the relationship between the policy of multiculturalism and
language maintenance among first generation Polish migrants and their
children (the second generation).
In her empirical study of language maintenance, the author
analyses 'push' and 'pull' factors for migration from Poland to
Australia. She examines the costs of migration; Polish migrants'
experiences of Australia's multicultural policy; an evaluation of
parents' migration by their children; re-migration to Poland;
interaction between Polish migrants and Australian-born people; and
the influence of domains such as the home, institutions of learning,
the Polish Catholic Church, the media and other organisations and
spheres of Polish cultural activity.

About the author(s)/editor(s)

The Author: Beata Leuner was born in Poland and educated there and in
Germany. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Sciences
from the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Her interest
in Australian migration issues dates from her first visit to
Melbourne in 1999 as a Master's exchange student at Monash
University.
She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Business
and Law and the Institute for Community Engagement and Policy
Alternatives at Victoria University, as well as an Honorary Research
Fellow in European/German Studies at Monash University. She has also
conducted research at the Horwood Language Centre of the University
of Melbourne.

Piatek.

Dr. Waluk mowil nie tylko o chorobach ale glownie podkreslal objawy
roznych chorob, na co trzeba zwracal uwage i mowil o potrzebie
obserwowania wlasnego organizmu. Specjalnie zwracac uwage na zmiany,
ktore moga byc spowodowane rozwijajaca sie choroba. Nie powinno sie
zadnych zmian lekcewazyc. Trzeba sie podzielic obserwacjami z
lekarzem. Ponadto trzeba sie konsultowac z dobrym lekarzem gdy sie
bierze kilka lekarstw, gdyz jedne lekarstwa mogo oddzialywac
niekorzystnie na inne lekarstwa w przypadku jak sie bierze trzy lub
cztery lekarstwa.

Statystiki informuja ze 20 % pacjentow w szpitalach w Australii  sa w
wyniku bledow lekarzy, ktorzy przepisuja lekarstwa nie
wspoldzialajace ze soba a wrecz szkodzace.

Dla ludzi otylych proponuje wypic 3 szklanki wody przed jedzeniem, to
zajmuje pewna objetosc w zaladku i w sumie zje sie mniej. Zaleca
jedzenie warzyw i owocow.

Nie mozemy opisac wszystkich ciekawych informacji jakie Dr. Waluk
przekazal obecnym.

W sumie prezentacja byla bardzo udana, ciekawa i Dr. otrzymal

For those who did not attend the AGM... the Treasurer prepared a
written summary of most of what he and STiPP had done over the year.
It is a bit more than many of you realise:

STiPP Treasurer's Report (1 July 2006 - 30 June 2007)

This is my 5th year as Treasurer. The Treasurer is now a full time
student doing an full time undergraduate degree and now has very
little time. This means an increased emphasis on the KIS (Keep It
Simple) principle.

The simplification of STiPP accounts and activities has continued.
This includes simplifying some of the reporting methods used.

Financial activities during the year:

• Simplified the accounts by closing an unnecessary passbook.
This process will also continue next year as the two term deposits
can be amalgamated. If the interest payments are monthly then
breaking the term at any given time incurs only a small penalty.
• The Treasurer has recommended removing the requirement for an
audit so that the AGM can be held earlier. The Associations
Incorporations Act requires audits only for organisations turning
over more than $250,000/yr. Alternatively a reduction in the number
of members on the audit committee would make it easier to find
sufficient members.
• Simplified STiPP Financial Spreadsheet further

Non Financial activities:

• Updated membership status of STiPP members: Financial/Non-
financial/Prior members and sent out membership reminders
• Organised the Ball. The Ball ran at a slight profit but this
was very hard to achieve. The ball was a success again this financial
year.
• Our meeting with Tadeusz Matkowski (Dziennikarz) was very
popular with people leaving very  late due to the interesting nature

• Last years Oplatek attracted around 30 people and we joined
with the Polish Chamber of Commerce to celebrate this event
• Updated the STiPP web site with maps showing the exact
location of the Mt Waverley Community Centre and exact map references.
• Used electronic communication methods to communicate with
members regularly
• Helped project the PowerPoint presentation of award winners
at the Ball
• Provided projection equipment for audio visual presentations
• Improved membership forms
• Archived all key records
• Helped organise the May barbeque
• Helped submit an application to the Blum Foundation to fund
the printing of a PhD work by Beata Leuner which records the history
of Polish organisations in Victoria and their contribution to
Victoria. It also documents the history of both STiPP and the Blum
foundation. Such material is of use to students studying contemporary
Polish history both in Victoria and abroad. It covers areas which
were previously not covered or poorly covered in literature and
provides depth to any discussion.
• Co-operated in the organisation of the Prof Jozef Hulanicki
remembrance day at Dom Syrena a few weeks ago (which I very much
regret not being able to attend).
• Attended Prof Hulanicki's funeral
• Donated $100 to Dom Syrena on behalf of STiPP at Prof
Hulanicki's funeral instead of providing flowers (as per his request)


Hall Hire
Mt Waverley costs us just over $100/meeting. This is much more than
comparable halls but the location suits existing members and other
attendees.

The $7 flat rate entry fee for events often does not cover costs
which include tea, coffee, p&#261;czki, wine, advertising and sometimes an
honorarium to the speaker.

The last increase occurred around 10 years ago. Fees should be
increased to $8-$10 per meeting to try and recover more costs.

The Treasurer's role
1) The Treasurer records all transactions in a cash book* (a running
list of income/expenditure) broken down by category.

2) Once a year the Treasurer has to produce a basic Balance sheet and
Profit/Loss Statement (or Cash Flow Statement*).

3) These reports are submitted to members at an AGM and later sent to
Consumer Affairs.

*This process has been largely automated by the use of a spreadsheet.

NB. All AGM reports should be written in English as they often need
to be submitted to Consumer Affairs, to the bank or to other
authorities.  These institutions require that a document be in
English. This is a legal requirement.

Explanations
The committee received a number of queries about the constitution
