Dear Source members,

Every time I go to Source there is more stuff! Last week when I went there were some local organic free range chooky eggs, plus another type of toothpaste (one that doesn’t fall off your toothbrush so easily!) and heaps of other stuff too. And I bought a big heap of polenta so I am currently dreaming of polenta pizza and lemon polenta cake. Mmmm… Food… Anyway, enough about how much I love food, here’s some news for this week:

1. Source AGM 22nd June and board positions up for grabs!

2. Shop working bee 30th May

3. More shop volunteers needed

4. Wholefoods recipes – I still want them!

Source 2010 Annual General Meeting

The AGM this year will be held on Tuesday the 22nd of June from 5-7pm upstairs at the New Sydney Hotel on Bathurst Street. All members are encouraged to attend, and are welcome to stay for drinks and eats afterwards. There is also going to be a raffle for a delicious hamper from the co-op (but you must attend to win!)

All members have the opportunity to nominate for and vote for board positions.  Positions include chair, treasurer and secretary, plus several ‘general’ board members who will take responsibility for things such as the garden, promotion, social and fundraising events and education. Source is a community-run organisation, and the board is critical to what makes the place work. Being on the board involves attending meetings (currently once a fortnight), contributing to decision-making and helping out with the running of Source behind the scenes. Being on the board can be a very enriching and rewarding experience, and getting fresh people on the board is essential too! If interested in a board position, you are welcome to talk to the existing board members about your interests, skills and expectations. The next board meeting is on Monday 24th of May, 5pm, at Sustainable Living Tasmania, and anybody is welcome to come along and see what it’s all about.

Shop Working Bee Sunday 30 May

Everyone's welcome to join in on our first Working Bee in the shop since it opened. Many things still need doing such as writing and putting up signs, making staff/volunteer name badges, designing and reorganising displays, rearranging the shed shelving, setting up the non-retail area...and lots more, including generally having fun doing it! We'll kick off from 11am through to around 3.30pm on Sunday 30 May.

____________________________________________________________________

Shop Volunteers needed

If you'd like to add retail work to your resume; or share your own experience and knowledge with us; swap recipe ideas with customers; or just hang out with like-minded people who have a passion for ethically and sustainably sourced food, you may want to help in the shop. As the shop's getting busier, more volunteers are needed, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Even if you can help for just a couple of hours now and then (Michelle runs a very flexible system to fit in with what suits you), please contact Michelle at sourcewholefoodsshop@....  You can also chat with her at the Working Bee on Sunday 30 May from 11am or at a Shop Volunteer meeting tomorrow night (Wednesday 12 May) 6.30pm at the shop.

____________________________________________________________________

 Recipes

I’m still taking recipes for a small recipe book so we can share our love of food with members who may not have so much experience cooking with wholefoods – especially those weird ingredients like quinoa, amaranth and millet. Please send them to me!

____________________________________________________________________

Thanks everyone, and commiserations to those who missed out on Winterfeast tickets – they sold out in a flash! Maybe next year we’ll hire a bigger venue!  Jen

Hello Team Source,

There will be a gardening working bee on Sunday, 30th of May from 10.30 to mid afternoon. This coincides with the Shop Working Bee so I should be a fantastic gathering.
Lets possum proof the gates, build some information signs around the garden, plant out the spare garden bed with some winter leafy greens and maybe plant some flowering plants around to brighten up the oncoming winter. Feel free to bring along some plants to contribute if you like.

We would also like to welcome interested members to join the Gardening Committee. We meet every two or three weeks, keep an eye on the garden and plan events and plantings. Let us know if you are interested in being involved.

Be Well and see you in the garden,

Samwise and the Gardening Committee.

Hi all,

The silverbeet and brocolli is looking mighty fine at Source, but the garden management committee and the board has agreed that we want to take the garden to the next level, increasing it's productivity and exploring it's educational potential. Although the current volunteer managers are doing an amazing job, we think this vision is beyond the level that volunteers can commit to. However, we don't have any excess money lying around to simply employ someone at the moment, so we have created a document that outlines several ways that we could generate an income from the garden to pay a manager. We are looking for someone with some energy and passion for gardens, education and communities to help take our garden to the next level. Please distribute amongst your networks and email expressions of interest to us by the 18th of June. Also, feel free to contact us to discuss various management models.

Jen and the Source board.

Hi Source members, a few things this week:

1, Winterfeast Thanks
2, Agm date
3. Working bee this Sunday
4. New website

____________________________________________________________

1. Winterfeast Thanks

What a great night on Saturday with great people, awesome food and lots of money raised for Source! Thanks to all the attendees and the generous donations for and bids of the auction. (If you won something and haven't paid for it or picked it up, please drop into the shop to sort it out). While we're not entirely sure yet, we reckon we raised over $5000 on the night, which is awesome. It'll go straight to the garden and maybe a composting loo. Here is a thanks from Hannah sent out to the volunteers that I think we all should read!

On behalf of the organisers of this years feast I'd like to say a
MASSIVE thankyou for making it a really beautiful evening for all.

The feedback we had from people on the night was really positive and I
believe it's because we had a great team of people there to make
everything happen... It's so important to have people who are warm,
open and have great smiles to make people feel welcome and excited to
be there.... and you did that so wonderfully :)

While we haven't yet confirmed all the loose ends it looks like this
is the most successful feast we've had so far, raising more funds then
ever to go towards developing Source into an even better resource for
our community.

So again, thankyou for donating your time, skills and awesome energy,
I look forward to creating fantastic events with you again in the
future!

2. Source AGM, 22nd June

Just a reminder that the Source AGM will be held on the 22nd of June this year, 5-7pm, upstairs at the New Sydney Hotel in Bathhurst St. As well as electing a new board, we will be celebrating our achievements of the past year, and planning what we want to achieve this year! We are looking into showing a good positive foody film that night too, sharing a few drinks and having a hamper to auction. Be good to see you there!

Please contact me, Ben Wills, Kyla Drushka, Lissa Villenueve or Clare Wiltshire if you are interested in being on the board - Source wouldn't happen without the behind-the-scenes action of the board members!

_________________________________________________________________

3. Working bee this Sunday

A reminder that there will be a shop and garden working bee this Sunday the 30th of May. We will be doing lots of useful things, but the only one I can think of at the moment is moving the fridge around the corner. There will be wheelbarrows, shovels and plants too, and of course gourmet woodfired pizzas for a late lunch! If anyone is available to be in charge of making the pizzas that would be great, please contact me.

4. New website

Did you know we have a brand new website with lots of information and pretty pictures? Thanks to Michael Shaman for helping make it happen. Check it out at www.sourcewholefoods.org.au

Thanks everyone, see you down the shop some time,
Jen

Hi everyone, happy winter! Hope you’re all having a good week and continuing to enjoy all the delicious food available at Source. Did you know that we now have herbal teas? They are hiding with the spices. I’ve been eating really well from the co-op: on the weekend I made a fantastically rich beetroot and chocolate cake, hommous with chilli and preserved lemons, roasted artichoke soup, sprouted wheat bread, and quinoa and almond bake. Hope you’re mouth is watering and you are inspired to go shop at Source this week! (I was organising a party, I didn’t eat it all myself…)

Anyway, enough about food, there’s a few things in the email this week:

  1. Source wins environmental excellence award!
  2. AGM reminder
  3. Board position descriptions
  4. Food sustainability research group
  5. New recipe book
  6. Thanks for help at the tread lightly festival

_______________________________________________________________

1.      Environmental Excellence Awards Success!

On Friday night the Source board attended the Environmental Excellence Awards, hosted by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and were very excited to win the community group category! We won $1500 (which will probably go towards more shelves and a new sign to replace the banner), and a fancy trophy made of King Billy Pine (with a crystal ball on top). Congratulations to all our members and volunteers who have been involved in making Source what it is – a great community driven project which demonstrates many aspects that are central to sustainability and community. Well done to Ben and Lissa who prepared the application, and also congratulations to our fellow co-op friends the tip shop, who received not 1 but 2 awards for their demolition project!

_______________________________________________________________

2.      Annual General Meeting

Yet another reminder that the Source AGM is being held on Tuesday the 22nd of June from 5:30 to 7pm, upstairs at the New Sydney Hotel. Please come at 5 for a 5:30 start. We’d really love as many members as possible to come along to help celebrate the achievements of the past year, and elect a new board for 2010-2011 who are responsible for the essential work that keeps Source happening and progressing behind-the-scenes. It is essential that at least some people come as we need a quorum of members for the AGM to be valid. You may have noticed there is a delicious gourmet hamper in the shop that will be raffled at the AGM (but you have to be there to win it), and I’m looking into catering options this week, so there should be some yummy munchies to share as well.

_______________________________________________________________

3.      Board position descriptions

This week I will be sending out position descriptions of board roles, so those interested are able to see what responsibilities the positions entail. Please have a look when they come out and keep your eyes and ears out for potential new board members!

_______________________________________________________________

4.      Food Sustainability Research Group

Source's Food Sustainability Research Group has had two well-attended meetings and is energetically getting stuck into learning about the many complicated facets of sustainable food.  If you are keen to get involved, then join our mailing list by going to http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/Source_FoodResearch/.  If you don't have any luck with that, email Garth at gmc_public@... and he will sort you out.

_______________________________________________________________

5. New Source Recipe Book!

I just made a hand-written recipe book last week, which is great, because it’s full of all my favourite recipes (and a few other people’s as well). It’s for sale for a $2 - 5 donation, which will go towards running a wholefoods cooking class for those poor undernourished souls who’s culinary skills are currently limited to 2-minute noodles and toast. It features all the recipes mentioned in the introduction to this email!

_______________________________________________________________

6. Tread Lightly Environment Festival Thanks

Finally thanks to Ben, Fee, Anne and me, who ran a stall this Sunday at the Tread Lightly Environment Festival at the Botanic Gardens. It was an unusually nice day for the middle of winter, there were lots of children playing in the autumn leaves, I got to taste tamarillos for the first time (they are good!), and we talked to plenty of people who hadn’t heard of Source yet. It was also a great opportunity to meet others involved in other health and sustainability actions and talk about how we could work together in the future.

Thanks everyone, and see you at the shop soon,

Jenny Calder

Are you interested in being on the board of Source but don't really know what that means?

Or maybe you are interested in helping out behind the scenes at Source, but don't want the responsibility of being on the board?

Your wonderful "Community Outreach" board member Clare Wiltshire has written up these position descriptions to give some more definition to the board roles.

We also have new roles for 'support' people - who will help out a specific board member with on-the-ground stuff. This will free up the board member to be able to spend more time researching and making the best decisions for the co-op. It also means that if you want to be involved, or have skills or time to share, but you don't want to commit to coming to board meetings, you don't have to! (Although you are most welcome).

This coming AGM we are particularly looking for a secretary, a treasurer and Community Outreach board member. As to the support roles, we would particularly love to find someone who is interested in the membership support role and the role of caretaker.

All roles are flexible and all entitle you to the 30% discount for active members. You also get experience in working as part of a team and contributing to the running of a positive and fantastic community project!

Please send an email if you need any further information on these positions.

And remember that the AGM is on Tuesday the 22nd of June from 5:30 - 7! Please show your support for your co-op and come along!

Thanks everyone,

Jen Calder
Secretary
Source Community Wholefoods

(P.S. Anyone want to help out at some wholefoods cooking classes for students in July - August? Let me know).

This is a message on behalf of the Artichokes, Rhubarb, Broad Beans, Spring Onions, Lettuce, Onions, Cauliflowers, Brocolli, Cabbages, Silver Beet, Kale, Carrots, Basil, Mint, Oregano, Rosemary, Potatos, Pumpkins, Garlic, Limes, Apples and Leeks: "We would like to thank our Autumn Waterers (Debbie, Denbeigh, Thomas, Ian, Guilliame) for feeding us for the last three or four months. A truly fantastic effort and I am sure everyone who has picked a lettuce, sampled a cauliflower, or simply marvelled at the greenery (and purplery, in the case of the cabbages) from above appreciates your labours."

We are now looking for some new volunteers for Winter Watering. It would entail coming down for half an hour every one or two weeks to water. If you are interested, please contact Sam on samwood79@....

We are also looking for enthusiastic people to join the Gardening Committee. We meet informally every two or three weeks (maybe more in spring/summer), organise working bees, pick veges and basically keep the garden ticking over. No gardening experience is required. Indeed, I have never grown a garden and find it a great way to learn from the experts around me (both Chris and Hannah have extensive permaculture training). Our next meeting will be in the first week of July, we will let you know a date and time soon. Again, contact Sam on  samwood79@... if you are keen.

There is lots of garden produce being sold through the shop. The pick your own silver beet and lettuces have been popular, and we are picking a basket of brocolli and cauliflower every week. Most impressive are the various brassica plants are almost taller than you.

Be Well and see you in the garden,

Samwise, the Gardening Committee (Chris, Hannah, Laura, Josh) and the Source Garden Vegetables.

Hi all, an early email this week, primarily to remind you about the AGM tomorrow! It'll be held in the upstairs meeting room at the New Sydney Hotel, from 5 - 7pm, with snacks provided.
Source is your food co-op, so this is your chance to help celebrate the achievements of the last year and to provide your input in the form of electing (or standing for!) the board of management. More info below, and other exciting news and events too...

1. AGM agenda and board positions

2. Annual report

3. Working bee this Saturday

4. Acknowledgement and recognition working group

5. Education and Outreach programs - who's interested in being involved?

6. Wholefoods cooking workshops for students

7. Composting toilet - good news!

8. Minutes of board meetings

__________________________________________________________________________________

1. AGM agenda

The upstairs at the New Sydney Hotel will be the venue for the AGM - which is heaps nicer than downstairs and you can still get a beer if you wish! There will be some antipasto platters, some vegetarian bruschettas and all members are encouraged to attend! This is the agenda:

- Presentation of the annual report - thanks, acknowledgements and recognition of the year's achievements
- Presentation of treasurer's report
- Voting on several minor constitution changes
- Open member feedback
- Presentation of board position descriptions
- Voting in new board members
- Mingling and fun times

For those still considering the board, role position descriptions can be viewed at: http://www.sourcewholefoods.org.au/node/61

____________________________________________________________________

2. Annual report

I've finally finished it and it's attached to this email! A complete summary of this year's activities and achievements! (It's got pictures too....). Please have a read to see what has gone on behind and in front of the scenes at Source over the last year. (Although reading it is not an excuse for not attending the AGM!).

________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Working bee this Saturday maybe?

For those interested in some healthy, social and constructive outdoors exercise, there will be a working bee this SATURDAY 26th, at Source, from 10:30am, run by Hannah Moloney, with help on the pizza front by Kyla Drushka. There'll be wheelbarrowing, fence-weaving, green-manuring and maybe even strawberry planting, followed (of course) by woodfired pizzas from the oven. Be good to see you there!

__________________________________________________________________________________

4. Acknowledgement and recognition working group

The board has been having some interesting discussions about how to recognise the tremendous volunteer efforts by a few individuals that have gone into creating Source. Andrew is interested in being on a small working group to take this forwards - perhaps by the creation of a small artistic plaque-type/mosaic thing somewhere on the site, but it's pretty open ended at the moment. It would start with a big brainstorm of all those people who deserve recognition!  If you'd like to be invovled, please contact Andrew on 0429015371, or Andrew.Doube@...

__________________________________________________________________________________

5. Education and outreach activities - who's interested in being invovled?

Source recieved a bit of money earlier this year, from the Ignite Your Imagination Science and Society fund, to develop an educational package about the sustainability features of Source. I have been putting together this package, and we will run 12 tours over the next year for members of the public and other interested groups. This will be a great way to spread the word about Source and sustainable living.

If anyone is interested in attending a training session to learn how to run these tours, please contact me. I think I may run a training session next Monday at 5, but this is flexible.

We are able to pay a small amount for somebody to run the first 12 tours, but it would be great to find people who are willing to continue to run tours on a volunteer basis after that. Topics covered in a tour (which will run for about 1 hour) will include the sustainable building, urban food gardening, permaculture design, composting, and why it's good to eat organic wholefoods and shop at a food co-op. They will be a great way to attract more members and spread the word about how to live more lightly on the planet!

__________________________________________________________________________________

6. Cooking workshops

Thanks for all the interest in helping to run the wholefoods cooking classes for students! I've got plenty of girls and boys who are willing to help. I just need to confirm some details with the TUU before progressing the plans any further, so I'll contact you all soon, and yes, they will be vegetarian!

I have endured more stifling photocopier fumes (thanks Duncan Kerr's office!!!) to print some more recipe books too. They'll be available in the shop again once I've hole punched and bound them.

__________________________________________________________________________________

7. Composting toilet

With some help from Lissa, Jono and Hannah we have recieved a large donation from Hydro Tasmania to contribute towards building a composting toilet at Source! The project is not confirmed yet, as we have yet to get approval from the university or the council, but if it does go ahead it will make Source a much more user-friendly place for our shop keepers, volunteers and shoppers - especially those with kids who need to do a poo.

The composting toilet will also be a demonstration of a cutting-edge sustainability practice that could be emulated by others around the state in the future. For those who'd like to know more about composting toilets, there is a fantastic resource that can be downloaded for free on the internet called "The Humanure Handbook": See: http://humanurehandbook.com/downloads/Humanure_Handbook_all.pdf

__________________________________________________________________________________

8. Minutes of board meetings

For those interested in knowing what goes on at board meetings, minutes are always available for members to read on the yahoogroups site. There should be a link at the bottom of this email which will take you there. They are under "files", "Minutes" and "2010 minutes".

_________________________________________________________________________________

9. Possibly goodbye as secretary!

This is possibly my last email as secretary for a while, as I'm hoping there'll be a new secretary elected tomorrow! So thanks for reading my emails, it's been fun. Probably the most exciting thing I ate this week was a chilli con carne made by Lissa. There was also a mushroom pie made by Clare, but I won't keep thinking or this email may never end! Thanks all, and happy midwinter - it can only get better and more sunnier from here! Jen

Hello Source Community,

There will be a Source Garden Committee meeting on Thursday 8th July at 6pm to 7pm. The meeting will be at the Source Shop and Garden. We are looking for enthusiastic green thumbs to join the team that keeps the vege's healthy and happy. If you cannot make it on Thursday, but would still like to be involved, contact Sam on samwood79@....

I noted today that there are four enormous cauliflowers and a few soccerball sized cabbages that are just bursting to be picked and bought in the shop! Just ask your friendly shop assistants for the garden knife and help yourselves. All revenue will be used to plant more cauliflowers and cabbages next winter.

Be ridiculously well and see you amongst the Artichokes,

Hello Source Community,

Heres what you need to do:
1) get out your diary and your greenest pen.
2) turn to the page that says Sunday July 25.
3) write down: "Source Garden Working Bee 10.30am to mid afternoon. Bring gloves, smiles, gossip, a hat (Sam has arranged for sun) and any plants/flowers you think like a home at Source".

We have a shiny new gardening committee and we are keen as mustard to keep the communities garden happy and healthy. There is weeding to do, some beds to plant, and perhaps even some wanton destruction in the form of pulling up the outlandishly successful Brassica Patch.

Naturally, there will be pizza.

Be ridicously well,

Samwise and the Shiny New Gardening Committee.

Exciting news, we have a new addition to our shop staff.  Michelle (Shell) Townstead has been employed as a Shop Assistant to cover some shifts for Johnathan and Michelle. You may already know her as one of our dedicated shop volunteers.  Shell will be working Friday and Saturday so you can look forward to seeing her then.  Welcome Shell!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cardboard boxes for you and help needed
Michelle is keen to hear from any members who'd like to help themselves to shop cardboard boxes.  The shop has quite a few every week building up, too many for the recycle bin.  They're clean, would be good as a mulch base, and we can flatten them for taking away.  We also have a build up of large waxed boxes (they are binned) if anyone wants those.

If the boxes cannot be recycled in this way, it would be great to have a member with a ute who wouldn't mind taking them to the tip every week or even couple of weeks.

If you would like some boxes drop into the shop to take them away.  If you can help with taking them to the tip please contact Michelle at the shop sourcewholefoodsshop@...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bring along your bags and jars for the shop
Our beautiful Source shop is in need of clean paper bags and other clean small bags for customers to use.  Also clean glass jars with lids will be very much appreciated.

Board meeting minutes

The latest board meeting minutes are on the Yahoo Groups site, check it out for more happenings and ideas being discussed.

The next Board meeting will be on Monday 23rd August, 5:15pm at the Sustainable Living Tasmania office.  As usual, all members are welcome to attend to contribute to the items being discussed.

Non-Source opportunity:  Inner city development plan - volunteers needed

An inner city development plan is being developed for Hobart in conjunction with Jan Gehl Architects. As part of the Hobart consultancy, volunteers are needed to conduct public space and public life counts around Hobart city. Jan Gehl Architects have been engaged to develop the plan because of their knowledge around sustainable urban planning and design, including pedestrian and bike-friendly design.

A summer count has already been conducted in Hobart and now a winter count
is needed and has to happen in the next couple of weeks.  The winter counts will be weekday pedestrian counts.  It's really easy and actually quite interesting to take the time to watch what is going on around the city.

If you are interested in helping out or would like more information, please contact Helen Norrie, Helen.Norrie@...

If you have something inspiring you would like to share with other Source members, please send it in source.wholefoods@...

Enjoy,

Hot Pies
The Source shop is now selling hot summer kitchen pies!  Yum!

History of Source
If you are interested in how Source came to be, check out the new History Folder, compiled by Jen, and sitting on the bookshelf at Source. It has lots of old photos, articles, annual reports and the original proposal for the "Sustainability Centre" submitted to the uni back in 2005. Also look out for a folder of note sheets that is soon to be on the bookshelf, with all the information you ever wanted to know about the sustainable straw and earth building, the garden, the compost, the water harvesting and the food co-op.

Donation/loan of reference books
Source has a new bookshelf! Currently it is full of pumpkins but soon there will be books for sale & reference. Do you have any books sitting unread at home that would be of much more use sitting on the shelf to be read by Source members? We are looking for reference books that can be donated or loaned for a short or long time to the bookshelf, on topics such as whole foods, vegetarian cooking, health, food politics, organic gardening, permaculture, do-it-yourself and other sustainable living themes.

Spring has (nearly) sprung,
The grass has ris'.
I wonder when,
the Working Bee is?

But wonder no longer,
its easy to remember.
Come one, come all,
on the Fourth of September.

We'll build us a shed,
give the veges some lovin'.
and feast upon food,
from the old pizza oven.

From Samwise and the Source Gardening Committee.

p.s. Come along from 11am 'til late afternoon. Feel free to bring along flowers/plants that you think might be good for our garden. It needs some colour! And landscaping tools if you have some.
p.p.s. Now that the daylight hours during weekdays are getting longer, we will be having more regular informal garden gatherings, 'after work'. Stay tuned.

 For the love of nature

BY PETER SANDERS

22 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM

An old-fashioned farmer from Bavaria has taken to organic techniques like a duck to atrazine-free water, as PETER SANDERS reports.

JOE GRETSCHMANN'S establishment of a 106 hectare organic dairy farm at Moltema in 1986 with wife Antonia belied his traditional farming background in southern Germany.

Mr Gretschmann said that he didn't know organic farming existed as he grew up on his parent's conventional dairy farm in Bavaria, southern Germany, in the 1960s and early 1970s.

He said that his father's conservative farming methods coloured his introduction to dairy farming and he questioned little of what he learned in the early years.

"I was nine when my dad died and I was pretty much into the running of the farm by the time I turned 12," Mr Gretschmann said.

"I continued farming the way I had been shown until my early 20s, but then I began to rethink the issues that surrounded farming because of rising concerns about the environment and the residues left behind with conventional farming.

"I began to question where the substances we put on our crops and land ended up.

"Once I looked carefully at the toxicological reports, I was no longer as confident as I was when I studied farming and I gave such reports just a fleeting glimpse.

"Around that time, a report was released about whales around the South Pole having DDT and triazines in their blubber and that really got me thinking."

Mr Gretschmann said that after meeting academics at Munich University and farmers who shared the same concerns "Antonia and I went organic".

That was 1979-80.

They organised a meeting in a small hall in 1982, later going on to become president of Naturland - a German association for organic agriculture.

"We were expecting about 30 farmers, but 300 turned up," Mr Gretschmann, who remains a Naturland delegate, said.

"Naturland now has 55,000 members all over the world.

"The organic movement is not like a rocket, but its growth is steady and just keeps going.

"We can have a downturn in the economy or we can have a boom time - organics just keeps going and that's the major issue for Tasmania, I believe - to get out of boom and bust cycles.

"More and more people want to know where their food comes from, how it's produced and what it contains."

Mr Gretschmann said that although it took three years for the pesticide residues to significantly reduce from the farm they bought, it took longer than that before they had the property ready for certification and provided milk to Lactos to keep them above water financially in the interim.

"Upgrading to organic does not necessarily mean downtime and it's certainly worth the effort," he said.

"It's possible to increase your profit margin when you upgrade to organic methods and a lot of these methods are slowly being taken up by conventional farmers.

"Farmers are implementing integrated pest management strategies, questioning the amount of fertiliser and sprays they require and more specifically targeting their spraying until they end up going towards an organic operation without setting out to do so.’’

Mr Gretschmann said that demand for their Elgaar Farm cheese, yoghurt and milk had outstripped supply since it first went on sale in 1996.

‘‘We have kept increasing our volumes, but this isn’t something you can do overnight—we probably started with something like 10 per cent of what we produce now, 14 years later,’’ he said.

‘‘We were still supplying Lactos when we made our first cheese.

‘‘We sell everything we make from the 400,000 litres our 100-cow herd produces each year: about a third cheese, a third milk and a third yoghurt and fresh products.

‘‘We never advertised, but were soon getting calls from specialist grocers in Hobart, who had seen our product and wanted to sell it —we now send a truck to Melbourne every week, which supplies 30 shops there, but there are 90 who want our product.

‘‘We’ve had enquiries about product from Sydney, other parts of of Australia and requests for a container load of product a week from India and Taiwan as a result of a food show we attended in Sydney a few years ago.

‘‘I had to tell them to get back to me in two or three years—well the three years are up and we still can’t satisfy domestic demand.

‘‘And winning a gold medal at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, as we did this year for our milk, only increases the demand.’’

Mr Gretschmann said that the farm didn’t make milk and yoghurt and store it until they had enough for a truck load.

‘‘It’s made one day and delivered the next—you can almost hear the cows mooing in the shops, it’s that fresh,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve had agreements from other farmers to supply us with organic milk but, as it comes time to actually sign up, peer pressure comes into play and they often change their minds.

‘‘I understand their mindset because I used to be a conventional farmer too with all the chemicals— when I finished studying farming I believed atrazine was so safe you you could practically drink it straight from the drum.

‘‘I have a different view now and the slightest amount (of atrazine) in drinking water is considered a potential danger to human health because of the way it mimics hormones and disrupts their balance in the body.’’

Mr Gretschmann said that he was still keen to hear from dairy farmers who were prepared to upgrade at least part of their farms to organic production.

‘‘Given accepted quality stipulations around fat and protein content, organic milk enjoys a 20-30 per cent premium over conventionally produced milk,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve got all the figures people would need to make an informed decision.

‘‘But it’s not something people can do overnight. ‘‘I wouldn’t say that I despair at the slow rate of organic uptake from the wider farming community, but I am impatient.’’

In the meantime, Mr Gretschmann said that Elgaar Farm would continue to grow the way it produced, organically.

  • Garden Update
  • It’s your garden: How to get involved!
  • Pick Your Own Produce currently for sale
  • Garden benches wanted

New shop opening hours

Thank you to everyone that gave feedback on the shop opening hours. The Shop hours have changed!

The following trading hours will take effect on Tuesday September 28th

  • Tuesday:      12 - 6pm
  • Wednesday: 12 - 6pm
  • Thursday:     12 - 6pm
  • Friday:         12- 5pm
  • Saturday       9am - 1pm

Garden Update
In an appropriate gesture to the month of September, the Source underwent a comprehensive Spring Clean last week. The site looks much better for it. We planted four beautiful feijoa trees, replaced (well, almost) the old greenhouse frame with a shiny second-hand shed, tidied up the lower garden beds ready for Spring Planting, whipper snippered the grounds, prepared the compost and ate a lot of pizza. We are now looking forward to the first full Spring in the Source Garden.

It’s your garden: How to get involved!!
Next Garden Committee meeting is Thursday 30th September, 5.30pm at Source. All members are very welcome and we would appreciate advice on planning for Spring.

Next Working Bee is Saturday 9th October, 11am to mid afternoon at Source.

We need volunteers to sign up for the Spring Watering Roster. One hour, on a set day, once a week/fortnight. This is a great way to contribute to the garden, particularly over the warmer months!

Contact Sam samwood79@... to get involved!

Pick Your Own Produce currently for sale: lettuces, leeks, rhubarb, silver beet, purple cabbages, ‘erbs.

Garden benches wanted

We are looking around for hand-made, second-hand, or low-cost garden benches or picnic tables to place around the Source Garden. Donations are welcome, but we have some funds – albeit minimal - to purchase these items. If anybody has any ideas please contact samwood79@...

Help with Guerilla Marketing needed!
Clare would like some help with the huge job of trying to 'market' Source to the wider community.   Here are some ways you can help…

Let everyone know about your co-op!  Attached to this email is a Source Poster and a mini price list.  Please print off a copy or email it around your workplace, uni department, staffroom, local school, community hall, bus-stop, etc.  Help get the word out!

If you have any time available to do a flyer drop (either to letterboxes or local clubs, schools, cafes, etc), please email Clare on clarew0@... and she'll put you on the right track.

If you have access to journalists, newsletters, community noticeboards, etc please feel free to market Source this way.

Any other imaginative or guerilla marketing ideas most welcome!

Board Meeting
Attached and on the Yahoo! group is the Board meeting minutes for Monday (20th September).  Feel free to have a read!

The next Hobart based meeting is Monday 1 November, 5:15pm at Sustainable Living Centre.

Enjoy your weekend!

Kelly.

Sorry for the emails that have been sent to you from this address.  Unfortunately Sam (our hard working Garden Coordinator!) got a virus in his email account which sent the emails.  This has now been fixed and we are looking at the Source email list settings to prevent it from happening again.

Being at the stall will involve smiling and answering basic questions about Source, food co-ops, community gardens, etc.  It will also involve eating yummy food.  One shift is only 2 hours between 10am-6pm.

To be added to the roster or get more info, email Clare (clarew0@...) ASAP.

Board Member opportunities!

We are expecting a few changes on the Board and are looking for some new volunteer Board members.  Kelly is leaving (as planned) to go to India in November and Simon has had an unexpected increase in work commitments.  This provides 2 available opportunities for you to get on the Board!

The position descriptions are attached for the available positions:

  • Board Member - Secretary
  • Board Member - General

No need to have experience of being on a Board, you are supported to learn as you go.    As current secretary, I highly recomend it, you get to contribute to making Source the best it can be and work with a great bunch of people.

If you are interested or would like more information, email us: source.wholefoods@...

UTas Research: Consumer decisions and the Fairtrade label
Erin, an undergraduate at the UTas School of Geography and Environmental Studies, is conducting a study on consumer decisions and the Fairtrade label. If you are interested, you can volunteer to participate in an interview discussing what influences your purchases.  Erin would love to hear from you!

Please contact Erin to arrange a time: elhilton@...

Enjoy your weekend and see you around Source,

Kelly.
