For the love of nature
BY PETER SANDERS
22 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM
An old-fashioned farmer from Bavaria has taken to organic techniques like a duck to atrazine-free water, as PETER SANDERS reports.
JOE GRETSCHMANN'S establishment of a 106 hectare organic dairy farm at Moltema in 1986 with wife Antonia belied his traditional farming background in southern Germany.
Mr Gretschmann said that he didn't know organic farming existed as he grew up on his parent's conventional dairy farm in Bavaria, southern Germany, in the 1960s and early 1970s.
He said that his father's conservative farming methods coloured his introduction to dairy farming and he questioned little of what he learned in the early years.
"I was nine when my dad died and I was pretty much into the running of the farm by the time I turned 12," Mr Gretschmann said.
"I continued farming the way I had been shown until my early 20s, but then I began to rethink the issues that surrounded farming because of rising concerns about the environment and the residues left behind with conventional farming.
"I began to question where the substances we put on our crops and land ended up.
"Once I looked carefully at the toxicological reports, I was no longer as confident as I was when I studied farming and I gave such reports just a fleeting glimpse.
"Around that time, a report was released about whales around the South Pole having DDT and triazines in their blubber and that really got me thinking."
Mr Gretschmann said that after meeting academics at Munich University and farmers who shared the same concerns "Antonia and I went organic".
That was 1979-80.
They organised a meeting in a small hall in 1982, later going on to become president of Naturland - a German association for organic agriculture.
"We were expecting about 30 farmers, but 300 turned up," Mr Gretschmann, who remains a Naturland delegate, said.
"Naturland now has 55,000 members all over the world.
"The organic movement is not like a rocket, but its growth is steady and just keeps going.
"We can have a downturn in the economy or we can have a boom time - organics just keeps going and that's the major issue for Tasmania, I believe - to get out of boom and bust cycles.
"More and more people want to know where their food comes from, how it's produced and what it contains."
Mr Gretschmann said that although it took three years for the pesticide residues to significantly reduce from the farm they bought, it took longer than that before they had the property ready for certification and provided milk to Lactos to keep them above water financially in the interim.
"Upgrading to organic does not necessarily mean downtime and it's certainly worth the effort," he said.
"It's possible to increase your profit margin when you upgrade to organic methods and a lot of these methods are slowly being taken up by conventional farmers.
"Farmers are implementing integrated pest management strategies, questioning the amount of fertiliser and sprays they require and more specifically targeting their spraying until they end up going towards an organic operation withoutsetting out to do so.’’
Mr Gretschmann said that demand fortheir Elgaar Farm cheese, yoghurt andmilk had outstripped supply since it firstwent on sale in 1996.
‘‘We have kept increasing our volumes, but this isn’t something you can doovernight—we probably started withsomething like 10 per cent of what weproduce now, 14 years later,’’ he said.
‘‘We were still supplying Lactos whenwe made our first cheese.
‘‘We sell everything we make from the400,000 litres our 100-cow herd produceseach year: about a third cheese, a thirdmilk and a third yoghurt and freshproducts.
‘‘We never advertised, but were soongetting calls from specialist grocers inHobart, who had seen our product andwanted to sell it —we now send a truckto Melbourne every week, whichsupplies 30 shops there, but there are 90who want our product.
‘‘We’ve had enquiries about productfrom Sydney, other parts of of Australiaand requests for a container load ofproduct a week from India and Taiwanas a result of a food show we attended inSydney a few years ago.
‘‘I had to tell them to get back to me intwo or three years—well the three yearsare up and we still can’t satisfy domesticdemand.
‘‘And winning a gold medal at theSydney Royal Easter Show, as we didthis year for our milk, only increases thedemand.’’
Mr Gretschmann said that the farmdidn’t make milk and yoghurt and storeit until they had enough for a truck load.
‘‘It’s made one day and delivered thenext—you can almost hear the cowsmooing in the shops, it’s that fresh,’’ hesaid.
‘‘We’ve had agreements from otherfarmers to supply us with organic milkbut, as it comes time to actually sign up,peer pressure comes into play and theyoften change their minds.
‘‘I understand their mindset because Iused to be a conventional farmer toowith all the chemicals— when I finishedstudying farming I believed atrazine wasso safe you you could practically drink itstraight from the drum.
‘‘I have a different view now and theslightest amount (of atrazine) indrinking water is considered a potentialdanger to human health because of theway it mimics hormones and disruptstheir balance in the body.’’
Mr Gretschmann said that he was stillkeen to hear from dairy farmers whowere prepared to upgrade at least part oftheir farms to organic production.
‘‘Given accepted quality stipulationsaround fat and protein content, organicmilk enjoys a 20-30 per cent premiumover conventionally produced milk,’’ hesaid.
‘‘We’ve got all the figures people wouldneed to make an informed decision.
‘‘But it’s not something people can doovernight.‘‘I wouldn’t say that I despair at theslow rate of organic uptake from thewider farming community, but I amimpatient.’’
In the meantime, Mr Gretschmannsaid that Elgaar Farm would continue togrow the way it produced, organically.

Garden Update In an appropriate gesture to the month of September, the Source underwent a comprehensive Spring Clean last week. The site looks much better for it. We planted four beautiful feijoa trees, replaced (well, almost) the old greenhouse frame with a shiny second-hand shed, tidied up the lower garden beds ready for Spring Planting, whipper snippered the grounds, prepared the compost and ate a lot of pizza. We are now looking forward to the first full Spring in the Source Garden.
It’s your garden: How to get involved!! Next Garden Committee meeting is Thursday 30th September, 5.30pm at Source. All members are very welcome and we would appreciate advice on planning for Spring.
Next Working Bee is Saturday 9th October, 11am to mid afternoon at Source.
We need volunteers to sign up for the Spring Watering Roster. One hour, on a set day, once a week/fortnight. This is a great way to contribute to the garden, particularly over the warmer months!
Pick Your Own Produce currently for sale: lettuces, leeks, rhubarb, silver beet, purple cabbages, ‘erbs.
Garden benches wanted
We are looking around for hand-made, second-hand, or low-cost garden benches or picnic tables to place around the Source Garden. Donations are welcome, but we have some funds – albeit minimal - to purchase these items. If anybody has any ideas please contact samwood79@...

Finally, a fond farewell to Kelly, who has been your
fantastic secretary over the past 6 months! Kelly is off to India in less than two weeks and
her astute organisational, fantastic minutes, emails, and dedication to Source will we sorely missed! Thanks for your help Kelly!
Happily we have welcomed back the most wonderful Clare
Wiltshire to the board who will be a general board member (covering for Lissa
as the chair when she is on her holiday in the states), and Penni who will be
the new Community Outreach Board Member. Welcome, and welcome back.
Jen Calder will be covering as the secretary, until we find a
new one! (Anyone want to be a secretary?). But unfortunately I won’t be as prompt as Kelly, as I’ll
be continuing to work away for 8 days a fortnight on the Overland Track – so apologies
in advance for delayed email responses!
apologies for sending another email, but I need to let you know that there will be no $10 cover charge at the garden party, as stated in the email yesterday. However we will ask for a gold-coin donation for local brews, including beer and ginger beer, and delicious slices Source-made wood-fired pizzas.
There will also be 4 local musicians playing live, and we hope to start uprooting some of our beautiful garlic crop, whilst doing a garlic dance and celebrating the end of the garlic drought for 2010.
Hooray! Hope to see you there on the 26th of November, from 5-9pm,
Thanks to everyone who attended the garden
party last Friday, especially the musicians Bridget, Barney and Jason; the
pizza chefs Sam, Jodie, Ben and Jen; and the bar-people Kevin, Warren the
others (I'm not sure who else I was too busy cooking pizzas!) Thanks also to
all those who helped pull garlic and plant corn – I can’t wait until those
fresh and juicy sweet corncobs start appearing! (It’s even more exciting than
broad beans). A big thanks to Clare Wiltshire organising the garden party.
It was a lovely night and I hope it re-inspired
you all about how wondering food co-ops are, and that you continue to support your local co-op by shopping and volunteering at Source!
Working
bee this Saturday and garden flowers needed!
Working bees are now being held on the first
Saturday of every month, so this one has come up quickly!
Here’s a message from Sam the garden man:
It’s
the first Saturday of December and we all know what that means. Digging Time. There
will be garlic plaiting, weeding and planting of zucchinis, bush beans and
whatever else is left on Sam and Laura’s windowsill, and maybe a tip shop run
to find things for the climbing peas to grow up.
We
would also love it if anyone has any flowers to donate to the garden! Fragrant
herbs and companion plants are especially good, so we can make tea, confuse the
broccoli-munching insects and attract the pollinating insects all at the same
time! Suggestions include chamomile, geraniums, nasturtiums, calendula,
marigold, rosemary, borage, lavender and lemon verbena. You could even try
growing cuttings for us! There are some instructions at http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s2966420.htm
Also,
as we know have a new and very useful garden shed, so any donations of old (but
still safe) tools would be much appreciated. Contact Sam at samwood79@... for more info.
Welcome to Jody, the new shop manager
The board has interviewed applicants for
the new shop manager, and appointed Jody Dickson, who will be starting next
week with Michelle showing her the ropes! Jody has recently returned to Australia from the USA where she has spent the last
four years working in the natural health and food industry and the last year as
a manager in a community food co-operative. She has a strong commitment to
natural food, community and sustainable living. We look forward to the working
with Jodie at Source!
Thanks
to Jono and Michelle
As you probably know by now, the fabulous
Jono Cooper and the amazing Michelle Dyer are finishing their time as paid shop
keepers at Source. Jono and Michelle did a fantastic job setting up the shop
from scratch in February and March, have established relationships with our suppliers
and set up the volunteering system. Sadly they are moving on from paid
employment, but we still hope to see them around Source as valuable members!

list of volunteer jobs that we would love done on the website http://www.sourcewholefoods.org/node/87
I hope you are surviving the beginnings of the silly season. It's mad out there in the CBD! It's definitely a good time to escape the mainstream shops and purchase your food at a lovely little co-op in Sandy Bay. There's lot of great Christmas cake ingredients: dried fruit, nuts, different types of flour including gluten free, eggs, butter, 3 different types of sugar. Everything except the brandy - we'll have to get onto that for next year!
There's also plenty of snowpeas in the garden to be picked if you're quick, some freshly picked garlic for sale.
A few things this week:
Christmas opening and closing times
We will be open as per normal (Tuesday to Saturday) until Friday the 24th of December.
Source will then be closed for 2 weeks until the 11th of January for holidays.
Better stock up on your wholefoods now!
Shop manager position
Unfortunately Jodie has had to leave us after her first week, due to a family issue. We are hoping to re-open the shop open from the 11th of January with Shell (who has been working on Fridays and Saturdays) and Andrew, (one of our keen volunteers), stepping up to take more responsibility. However we will be starting the search for a new shop manager for Source. Please email us if you would like a position description at source.wholefoods@..., and forward on to anyone you know who may be interested!
Garden working bees
Thanks to all who came to the last working bee! Unfortunately I wasn't there, but I went down and looked at all the work that had been done, and it continues to look great! I'm not sure when the next bee will be, as the next first Saturday of the month is New Year's Day, and we may all have different plans! We'll let you know soon.
Insulated box / Eski wanted
We are looking for an insulated container for our Elgaar dairy deliveries - a box or an eski that is at least 70cm squared. If anybody has something like that lying around and doesn't need it, we'd love to have it! Alternatively, if you happen to be poking around at the tip shop and see something - please grab it for us and we'll reimburse you.
Minutes and board meetings
Attached are the minutes from the last two board meetings for your information. The next board meeting will be on the 10th of January, at 5:15pm at Sustainable Living Tasmania. All members are welcome to attend.
Thanks everyone, and have a happy Christmas, full of good Source tucker, and New Years if I don't get to email you before that.
Jen Calder Acting Secretary Source Community Wholefoods
Please note that I work away for 8 days a fortnight on the Overland Track, hence there may be an 8 day delay before I get to respond to your emails.
I trust you all had a refreshing break and have come up with
extravagant resolutions on how you can get involved with your friendly co-op in
2011. Source has hit the ground running and has the following news and
opportunities:
A shiny new shopkeeper (Andrew the Able).
Infrastructure developments (Pergolas and Paving)
Lunchtime volunteer opportunities (Pies and Primary-schools)
Fundraising diaries (People and Planet)
Garden opportunities (Potatos and Pumpkins)
Board opportunities (Inspiration and Involvement)
Board meeting minutes (Insightful and Informative)
A shiny new shopkeeper (Andrew the Able).
We are pleased to announce that Andrew Doube has accepted
our invitation to take up the position as shopkeeper at the Source Wholefoods Store.
We had a number of strong applicants apply for the position that was recently
vacated by the inimitable pairing of Michelle and Johnno and look forward to the
ever enthusiastic Andrew taking over the running of the shop from January 2011.
We especially wish to thank Andrew for filling in at such short notice over the Christmas
period. Please make him feel welcome on your next visit to our fully stocked
shelves (Tuesday – Saturday).
Lunchtime volunteer opportunities (Pies and
Primary-schools)
Stop Press. We need a couple of volunteers willing help Ben
and Sam serve summer kitchen pies and salad to 30 school children on Tuesday 18th
(12-1 pm) and Wednesday 19th January (12.30-1.20pm). Yes, that is
today and tomorrow (don't say we didn't warn you)! If you can help out at such short notice, please contact
Ben right now at wills_benjamin@....
Infrastructure developments (Pergolas and Paving)
Santa visited Source over Christmas and delivered a sack
full of infrastructure upgrades. It seems that treasurer and apparent
'development officer' Ben was good boy this year and therefore his wish list was
dually granted. We received funding to build a pergola around the northern and
eastern sides of the building (ahhhh shade at last), paving beneath the
pergola, and a larger and sturdier stage/deck area. It will be exciting to
watch the Source Site grow this year.
Fundraising diaries (People and Planet)
As part of our fund-raising efforts, we have a stack of
People and Planet diaries available for purchase at Source Wholefoods Shop.
They cost only $12.50 for diaries and $15 for calendars, which is 50% of their
retail cost. Get in quick or you might waste the first ten pages of your
purchase (i.e. January).
Garden opportunities (Potatos and Pumpkins)
As you would expect after such a wet summer, Your Garden is bursting
at the seams with produce. We have 15 varieties of tomato that are trussing up nicely
and the corn is now taller than you. There is a multitude of produce that can
be picked and bought right now, including zucchini, cucumber and rhubarb. We
are starting to build a profile in the community garden network and we even
featured on the cover of the Australian Community Garden Magazine (http://communitygarden.org.au/community-harvest-summer-%E2%80%9910).
Remember that you can be Involved in Your Garden by coming
to our ‘First Saturday of the Month†Garden Gatherings; by joining the watering
roster; or through other projects that you can think of that would advance our
garden. Contact Sam: samwood79@....
Board opportunities (Inspiration and Involvement)
There is movement happening at the top. We anticipate that 2
or 3 board members will be unable to stand for re-election at the next AGM
(mid-year), so please consider stepping up to the plate and taking on a
position of responsibility at Source in 2011. For the record, as garden
coordinator, I can vouch that it is inspiring to be closely involved with such
a passionate and motivated group of Board Members. If you are considering taking
on one of the many roles available, we suggest you come to a few Board
Meetings: the next one is Monday 24th January, 5.15pm, at Sustainable
Living Tasmania and get in touch with us at source.wholefoods@....
Board meeting minutes
(Insightful and Informative)
5) Can you donate some sturdy posts for our apple orchard trellis?
1) IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE FUTURE OF SOURCE (from The Source Board).
THE PROBLEM
·Sales at Source have been on a downward trend since before Christmas. Sales may pick up after summer, but if this downward trend continues for too much longer we will run out of money.
·If all of our 800 members were spending only $10 a week, we would be in a very healthy financial position. However despite membership continuing to rise, our sales have remained flat over the year and decreased over the past couple of months. We are not sure of the reason, besides our 'inconvenient' location.
·Currently, volunteer board members do a lot to keep Source running. Two key board members will not be re-standing at the next AGM. Without new board members we will not be able to fill our legal obligations as a co-operative.
·The board remains committed to our mission, which is providing more affordable ethical food for Hobart and making the best use of our beautiful building and community garden.
·Ideally, we would like to make a decision regarding the future of Source by March 13, when memberships are due for renewal.
AN ALTERNATIVE being discussed
·Change the structure of Source to one based on a pre-paid box system for perishable items like fruit, veggies, eggs,
dairy and bread, with pick up available one afternoon / evening a week. There would also be the opportunity to shop for wholefoods items when collecting your box at the Source site, as well as during one additional, whole day of trading. A paid manager would be employed. This would allow to us to reduce our management costs, and hopefully reduce the pressure on the volunteer board. This smaller scale and hopefully less demanding structure, may be more attractive to new board members. The prepaid system for perishable items would also help reduce financial stress.
·Find new uses for the building such as meetings and community gatherings, during the times that the shop is not open, and continue with the community garden and other community events.
Is there a reason you are not shopping at Source, and what can we do about it? What do you think of the proposed changes?
Do you have any ideas about how we could change to create a more sustainable business, while still enabling and encouraging ethical food choices for the people of Hobart?
UNLESS OUR SALES PICK UP, AND WE RECEIVE SOME INTEREST IN PEOPLE JOINING THE BOARD TO REPLACE OUR OUTGOING MEMBERS, THE STRUCTURE OF SOURCE WILL HAVE TO CHANGE.
2) GARDEN UPDATE AND SOURCE GARDEN WORKING BEE: SATURDAY 5TH FEBRUARY (11am)
Sure summer may have abandoned us (for warmer climates perhaps?) this year, but the giant sunflowers are doing their best to brighten up our garden. Everything is ripening up now (better late than never) and we have a fresh crop of zucchini, cucumber, beans, potatos, lettuce, parsnips, rhubarb and carrots awaiting your basket. I also issue the inaugural Source Garden Challenge. We have 16 varieties (!) of heritage tomato that should be ripening up in the next few weeks. Surely this is a unique opportunity to buy one of each and line them up for the ultimate Tomato Taste Test.
Being the first Saturday of the Month, it would be great to see you at the 'Garden Party' (....it seems more people come if you call it a Garden Party rather than a Working Bee). Come along at 11am on 5th February for some planting, mulching, watering and weeding. We may even have a go at constructing a sturdier trellising system for our espaliered apple trees.
3) VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
Groundskeeper:
Source needs a reliable person to help keep our site looking tidy! This is a requirement of our lease, and has currently been falling to the board members who have too many other tasks on their hands as well! Tasks include:
- Whippersnippering, which needs to be done approximately once every 3-4 weeks depending on the season.
- Taking the cardboard boxes to the tip (or somewhere else where they may be useful)
- Emptying the grease trap once every 3 months
- Anything else you may like to do to improve the site
Assetts Manager
- We would also love to have a volunteer we can call on for small tasks within the shop, that the shop keeper is unable to keep up with. Possible tasks include finding a new fluroescent globe for the fridge, finding us some crates, and helping improve the food storage and display systems. Please let us know if you think you could help!
4) CRATES
- Elgaar wants their crates back! Can anyone donate us approximately 6 milk crates, or similar structures to take their place? Thanks!
5) POSTS OR POLES FOR A TRELLISING SYSTEM.
- We are planning to construct a sturdy trellis system for our apples trees to replace the steel droppers. We are looking for a set of 8 or more tall (~3-3.5m) and strong wooden posts to build the trellis. If you have some lying around to donate, or know a cheap and effecient option, please let Sam know: samwood79@...

MEMBER'S MEETING 22 Feb 6pmAT SOURCE
All Source members are encouraged to attend this meeting!
Following the last email, we have had some positive feedback about using vegie boxes (possibly in place of the current produce range) to make Source's business model more robust (pre-ordered box = less waste). We also have some ideas to share about trying to increase events and volunteerism at Source.
Before making any big changes, we would like to get member's to have their say and offer any other suggestions.
Colin will co-ordinate pizza-making on the night and needs some helpers. Contact: colinmaier@...
So, please come along 6pm for pizza, 6.30 for the meeting at Source 22 Feb.
VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR O-WEEK 'PARTY ON THE HILL'.
O-Week is next week and we would like to cultivate our next crop of members and volunteers. There are plans afoot for pizza and other activities as part of our 'Party on the Hill'.
If you would like to volunteer for a few hours between February 21-25 for pizza making and spruiking, please contact Bridget Stewart: brit.stewart@....
GARDEN UPDATE.
The Source Garden got a serious haircut last week with several square meters of grass and weeds added to our burgeoning compost bins. Thanks for the volunteers who came along to participate, and particularly to Laura who prepared a veritable feast of scones and jam, lemonade and corn-chip guacamole. Ben also deserves special kudos for his tireless effort behind the whipper snipper. The garden looks spectacular at the moment, so come along and check it out! What better place to eat your lunch or relax after work.
Current 'pick your own' produce: Zucchinis, Cucumbers, four type of Beans (purple, scarlet, green and yellow), Carrots, Lettuce, Tomatos, Apples (!).

General Meeting on the Future of Source
A general meeting was held on 22 Feb to discuss the current finances and operations of Source. There was a good turnout of engaged members (and one very noisy cricket), which was wonderful and brought important perspectives to the discussion. It was great to see that people are enthusiastic about Source and are committed to seeing it succeed. Several people put their hands up for various volunteer roles and it was decided that a volunteer coordinator position would be created. We discussed the need to emphasize that Source is a volunteer driven organisation and members are strongly encouraged to volunteer at least
1hr per month. The volunteer coordinator will connect members with volunteer jobs that need to be done. It was generally agreed that members are happy to be called upon to help out. It was also decided to stick with the same opening hours and trial a small-scale fresh fruit and veg box scheme. Details of the box scheme will be developed over the coming weeks, with a boxes available to a limited number of members during an initial trial period. A huge thank you to everyone who came, shared their thoughts, volunteered to take on a new task and cooked pizzas!
Welcome to our new secretary: Millie Rooney
We warmly welcome Miss Millie Rooney to the Board as our new Secretary. Millie has a wealth of experience
from food cooperatives in Canberra and has a deep interest in peoples attitudes to sustainable living (ask her about the 'Wicked Delights' of her fascinating PhD topic). And so - alas - my short-lived reign as an overtly verbose psuedo-secretary comes to an end........

Garden Working Bee (Saturday 5th March 11am until mid afternoon) and Watering Volunteers Needed (Autumn)
I have arranged for a sunny day on Saturday for pottering in the garden. Come along and learn about how to produce masses of vegetables in an urban setting and see whether those rampant pumpkins have made their escape over the fence yet. Remarkably, we even have some very special ROCKMELONS and WATERMELONS forming this summer......surely this is testament to the success of our garden that we can get these warm-climate vegetables to grow in this arctic winter.
We also have CORN ready now to pick and buy in the shop!
Whilst La Nina has been doing her best filling in for the summer, WE NEED WATERING VOLUNTEERS for our Autumn roster. This involves about one hour per fortnight on a specific day that you can nominate. It is a fantastic way to get involved in Source in your own time. Contact samwood79@... if you are interested.
Source Home Brew Festival
We are organizing a Home Brew Festival for Sat, April 9th. 3pm-7pm. Home Brewers will be showing off their brews. Pizza and live music as well. There will probably be a $10 admission charge that gets you 4-5 tastes of beer. Stay tuned for more details. contact mikefried1@... if you would like to be involved
Volunteers Bike Counters Needed - Tas State Bike Week 15-21 March
The time is coming quickly to do some more bike/pedestrian/bus passenger counting at the various UTAS locations around the state.
We are looking for volunteers to do counting in two-hour blocks from 0730-0930; 0930-1130; and 1530-1730 at 6 locations around the Sandy Bay Campus. The best bit is that volunteers recieve a $20 Source Voucher for each 2hr block that they do! There will be a training session and all required materials will be provided. Please contact lissa@... to register today! The information gathered will serve as baseline data to compare the impact of improved cycling infrastructure on campus.

3. Garden News They said it couldn’t be done. Melons cannot be grown in Tasmania. Well we have proven the glass-half-full doubters wrong - even in this cloudy La Nina Summer. There are a dozen of the sweetest rockmelons (albeit small ones) hanging off the vine and half a dozen special Black Watermelons that are practically bursting to be picked. I reckon we could try a couple at the Working Bee (first Saturday of April, 11am for planting of Autumn/Winter crops). Current ‘pick and buy’ produce includes Cobs of Corn, Trusses of Tomato’s (the Green Zebra’s are the best so far), Ruby Red Rhubarb, and Beetroots. There are still a couple of spots on the Watering Roster (every second Monday or Wednesday) if you would like to get involved. Contact Sam on samwood79@....
4. THANK YOU volunteers! A big thanks to all those volunteers who came out last month to cook pizza, play music and generally help bring the o-week masses to Source (I'm afraid I don't have an official list, but you were all fabulous and know who you are!). A particular thanks to Bridget who did a fantastic job of pulling an event together at the last minute, making pizza, decorating the site and playing music herself.
Thanks to the musicians Ally Mok, Andrew Marshall, Michael Helman, Dave Elliston, Jana, Rachel Walter, Bridget Stewart, Colin Maier.
Happy days,
Millie
Millie Rooney Secretary Source Community Wholefoods
-- Millie Rooney PhD Candidate School of Geography and Environmental Studies University of Tasmania
So much to report this week with a big birthday, another garden bee, home brewing, home preserving and lots of new and exciting energy (its the place to be these days I hear!).
1. Happy Birthday Source! (and don't forget to renew your membership) 2. Garden Update (Wokring Bee 2nd April) 3. Preserving workshop (more! more!) 4. Introducing our new volunteer coordinators! 5. Home Brew Festival (9th April)
6. Box scheme update and changes to shop management
1. Happy Birthday Source! (and don't forget to renew your membership!) Happy Birthday Source Community Wholefoods! On 13 March, Source marked the 1 year anniversary of offically opening our doors to the public. It has been an amazing first year and we thank all of you for your support during over the past 12 months and before. Please remember to renew your membership the next time you are in the shop or download a form from our website, www.sourcewholefoods.org.au. There are exciting things ahead and we look forward to working with our members to expand our services and develop the site over the coming years.
2. Garden Update (Wokring Bee 2nd April) It iss Transition Time in the garden this month. The highly successful crop
of summer vegetables are starting to reach their bedraggled and moth-eaten ends with three rows of crow-stripped corn-stalks, only a bucket of straggling tomato's still clinging to the vine and a handful of rusty beans hiding amongst the undergrowth. Nevertheless, the 'mystery pumpkins' that sprang up from random seeds discarded in our compost are starting to appear and a few lucky volunteers are still recovering from the sugar hit provided by the rockmelons and watermelons
we harvested this week! So it is high time to transition to the winter crops. The next working bee will be on Saturday 2nd April at 11am
in which we will be Pulling-out, Planting and Pizza-ing. In other news,
we have just got approval to construct an trellising framwork to espalier our heritage apple trees. Stay tuned and see you in the Garden,
Samwise the Brave .
3. Preserving workshop (more! more!)
On Saturday Source held the first of its preserving
workshops; learning and sharing tips about Fowlers preserving.
Jon Sheridan ran the workshop, he pre bottled some pears and
vegetables, bought along a number a preserving books and developed a Fowlers
fact sheet for participants. On the day we bottled plums and tomatoes.
The workshop was an excellent shared space; we had the
opportunity to join in preparation and share our own experiences of bottling.
Special thanks to Barry who has allowed Source to use Sirens
to run workshops, it is brilliant to have such a central, comfortable, well
appointed space to work in.
For all of you who can't get enough (or, like me, managed to stuff up your 12 jars of bottled tomatoes - honestly!!) there are more workshops on the horizon!
Colin Maier - Gut Flora Cuisine

4. Introducing our new volunteer coordinators! It is with great pleasure that we introduce Quinton and Tess as the new Source volunteer coordinators!
You might have seen them lurking about at Source, or on the end of your telephone asking for a hand... if not, expect a call sometime... Quinton and Tess will be coordinatoring volunteer activities, making sure volunteers are recognised and providing support. They are your go to people for all things vollie - source.volunteer@...
Thanks guys!
Please note that a working group has also been set up to review the current volunteer system and discount options. This is very much in the preliminary planning phase and all comments, ideas, thoughts etc welcome (just send an email to Quinton and Tess for how to get involved). 5. Home Brew Festival (9th April) Come on out to Source for a day of fun, food, friends and beer.

Squires Bounty.
Thinking of brewing yourself? Brew By You will be giving a talk on how to brew your own beer. Find out how sustainable, cheap and delicious your home brews can be.

6. Box scheme update and changes to shop management Exciting news: a new energy coming to the shop soon! Ally Mok is going to be coming on board as an assistant manager. Our fabulous Jilly is going to reduce her hours and direct her energy towards getting more local growers involved in Source and getting the box scheme up and running (yes, despite several delays the scheme will go ahead, so keep your eyes on this space!).
Ally has been asked to take over the assistant manager role. She has done a wonderful job filling in as Storekeeper in the last few months when neither Jilly or Andrew could be
there. She was offered the role of assistant store manager based on her
aptitude, interest, commitment, and experience in the shop. She accepted this role, and will take over Jilly's responsibilities in the next couple of weeks. We welcomeAlly and her contribution to the shop!
Phew! So many happenings... l look forward to seeing you all at our co-op!
