Yeah Paula I saw that I shall give the show a few more episodes before a final judgment but don’t bring back Ironhide K.I.T.T

I don't know if anyone happened to watch the kickoff the new updated Knight Rider series last night (on NBC), but I was surprised at much they've turned K.I.T.T. into a Transformer!

Long gone is the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (a car I happen to LOVE when I was younger).

Now he's a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR (woopee).  On last night's episode, however, K.I.T.T. also morphed into a "super" mode AND into a pickup truck!  This is where I thought TRANSFOMERS.

Overall I wasn' that impressed with the show - and while the voice modulation doesn't make it sound like him, knowing Val Kilmer is doing the voice doesn't help - not that I don't like Val Kilmer mind you - but William Daniels (the original voice) just had... PANACHE.

Jase,

I appreciated Stuart's comments - but I will say that I struggled to not make a post back on a few things.  *chuckle*  Darn American pride there.  ;)

To everyone that had an opinion of me moving to your wonderful country I say thanks the main thing that has played on my mind would be being nearly 40 and doing bare wage minimum jobs. And the fact all your bills come out at the end of the month as I like my flex ability of being able to switch  to weekly or fortnightly. I hope Octanetoys has not upset any of you but I see his points as well as all of yours

I hear Seattle's nice, but one of if not THE most expensive of major U.S. cities to live in.  The obvious major advantage to Chicago would be having a cool neighbor like Paulla.  I can also say that if you lean politically left you might like Minneapolis, too, although we're not without our own problems as well.

Since I've already listed my chief complaints about life here, I'll also provide a list of what's to like about life in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan region.

1. The Minneapolis farmer's market is absolute heaven for us locavore types.  Great fresh produce at rather reasonable prices.

2. A pretty much all-encompassing mass transit system that covers Minneapolis, St. Paul, and to a bit lesser of a degree, the surrounding suburbs.  (The suburban transit lines, however, are considerably more restricted by the notion of people only needing service during standard weekday work hours.)

3. The Mall of America, although considerably the most expensive place to get anything, is still the one place you're more likely to be able to find anything.  Just minutes from downtown Minneapolis, thanks to the light-rail train.

4. You might just be surprised at how much free entertainment is to be found during Minneapolis summers, particularly in the way of outdoor musical performances.  Always a fun social gathering!

Anyway, yes, New Orleans was predominantly destroyed by hurricanes and may not be the most ideal spot.  If you do go through with the move, be sure and let us know when and where we can all meet up!

No guys as nothing is ever set in stone as for New Orleans I shall get my wife to change he heart on that as I am not too fussed about living there myself, As for moving it shall be a 8-10 years away and I hope if we do this it will be to a place like Chicago or Seattle or somewhere else

Thanks for your information I shall take a deeper look into it especially the job sites that were provided by Paula and if I do head over even for a holiday I am hoping to fit in some time and drop in and say hi

Dave,

I'm a woman and even I agree with your statement about "power hungry women" when it comes to work!  I also like the fact that you said we're in a depression.  Granted it's not (thank God!) as bad as it was in the late 1920's - but it's bad.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your job again.  That really has to suck big time.  I have such worry about job security it's not funny.

Jason,

This one I can give the ultimate experience on. (I did exactly the
same thing 7 years ago moved from Oz to USA. It's been an
experience.) Some of this is on the negative side and I am not
knocking America as a whole or any of my American Friends just
reporting my experience.

Something to think about and start looking into......

How are you entering the USA to stay here? It's not like you can
just overnight pack up and move to the USA. Took me 6 years in
processing time to get here. (I came in on a Fiancee Visa) Working
visa go on a lottery system and take between 3-7 years and there is
no garentee, and having someone sponsor you over here work wise
unless you have contacts is a difficult thing to do. So even if you
are thinking about it in the next couple of years start the process
now because it is a long wait. Look into how you are getting here
and start the process it takes time and money to do. (Really it's
lot of waiting and a trip to the US consulate in Sydney at some
stage.)

You also have to be medically in reasonably good shape. You have
quite a lot of medical test you have to take and pass, if you have
any illness that is major you might not be able to come. (Case in
point I had to have sun spots/moles on my back tested for cancer
before I could come here. You know how many freckles I had...)

Criminal record..... hope you or the wife don't have anything other
then the odd speeding or redlight ticket. You have to get
background checks from your police station and if there is anything
major there in any of your history you can forget about it.

The big thing to take into account. Your work and school history in
Australia (or any country for that matter) don't count for anything
once you get into the USA. These don't transfer over so you
basically become a blank slate in the USA. See you get a lovely
Social Security Number (like a tax file number) which everything is
recorded against. Everything is databased of your SSN. Being new
to the country you have nothing on it. It effects getting a job,
getting a loan, applying for credit everything is tied into the
social security number. IT SUCKS to no end. So when I came here my
14 year work history with big international companies like IBM,
Hewlett Packard and Kodak counted for nothing and I started working
very minimum wages as a stock clerk, bussing tables and selling my
soul working at the Outback Steak House at the glorious $2.15 an
hour but I could lie and keep a straight face to get glorious tips
(Funny stories abound) and driving forklifts. (Computer analysts to
minimum wage was a bit of a shock to the system) See it actually
costs companies to check into international people working history
(About $700-$1000 I was told by a former FBI person who was head of
personal at a Six Flags company that gave me my first job) so most
if not all don't bother. Occasionally you get lucky and people do
take notice of your resume but most will check your social first
leaving you SOL. Also because you are X amount of years old and you
have nothing on your SSN you often get rejected because they think
there is fraud or if you are unluck to get a recycled number it may
refer back to the previous person.

You can only be a USA citizen by giving up you Australian
citizenship. There is only 3 countries that you can have dual
citizenship with the USA. (It would flaw you which three countries
they are and Australia, Canada or England is not one of them. LOL)
This only really effects things like voting (You get to pay the
taxes but not vote. What's up with that? Totally unfair.) or
leaving the country for holidays (Yes going to Mexico or Canada.
You have to apply in advance to cross a USA border. If you don't
forget about getting back in the country.) You can be a temporty or
perminant resident it no bigy. You have to renew it after the first
1 year then 3 years after that. Then it goes to 10 years.

I will add that the whole immigration process external to the USA is
very well checked, controlled and stringent but once you are in the
USA the system is lax. The stories I could tell you would make your
hair curl. If you can get the US soil staying is easy the internal
system here is laughable. Makes me mad that I did the right thing
waited 6 years to come here when I could have flown in the country
on a tourist visa Married my GF and stayed with little trouble.

Oh and I kind of agree with most others New Orleans is not the place
to think about going to the whole economic of that region is depress
(Been there because of work) even more so because of natural
disaster. But we are not in a depression... We are constantly
reminded of it..... Yeah right..

Too Questions......

1. Wages are fairly comparable between the too countries. (I'd say
maybe alittle less in the USA for the same job. Although
occasionally you get you Medical insurance included so that is a
plus.) Depending on what field you are in. Anything Medical or
Medical related you are looking at a much higher wage while just
about everything else will be a bit less around 5-20%. There are a
lot of low paying jobs out there.

2. Housing is realistically about the same. It really region by
region. I moved for a 120K house from Melbourne to a 120K house in
San Antonio about the same space and everything. (Although I think
the housing market here is heading towards a downward trend while
Australia has had an upward trend for the last number of years.
Depending where you go you can get fully furnished houses or
Apartments it all depends on what you pay.

3. Public Transportation system. Again depending on where you are
initially from and where you move to. I was shocked at the lack of
public transportation in San Antonio heck they don't have a lot of
foot paths. LOL.

4. Job market is going to be your toughest. Online sites are
basicly the same Monster etc. (actually my last job is Australia
was thru Robert Half and my current Job in the USA is also thru
them. Might have taken them 3 years to get placed but they got
there eventually...Go figure.) My personal experience with work
funny. (Or maybe it is my attitude being thru the mill here alot.)
I feel because of all the quota's that USA companies have to have
for minorities employee if you are a white male you are the least
likely to be employed. (One question that stood out on every
application I filled out was Race... How many applications have you
filled out in Australia or anywhere in the world that you have to
put what race you are? None....Only the US.) Race is a factor
here, it's sad to say. I started putting down I was a Pacific
Islander on applications and I started getting call back for actual
interviews where previously I was getting none (Australia is an
Island that touches the Pacific Sea....It counts. LOL) Also
appearance is also a big factor.. long hair, earnings, tattoo's
really don't help your chances. Found that out the hard way as well
your appearance will get looked at closer than you work ability.
Well in my experiance anyway. I probably applied for close to 500
odd Jobs. Actually minimum wage (or warm body jobs) are fairly easy
to get. Most of your minimum wage earners have no pride nor do they
want to better themselves or put any effort into anything. I got
several premotions and wage increases in all my low paying jobs just
for turning up on time and actually working. Actually love quite a
lot of my minimum payed jobs and if I could survive on $7 and hour
would be still working in them.

5. I hate to say it but the US schooling system is really third
world. Not the actual schools but rather the education taught
there. (Being from Texas the schooling systems are more interesting
in there sporting programs.) I am sorry it's really taught to the
lowest in the class. There is less time spent in class per year in
the USA than Australia. Not going to school all year round and the
whole 3 months off in the middle of the year completely threw me.
Had a son and step daughter in the same grade in the different
systems in both counties. By about 4 grade my step daughter was at
least 1 years if not more behind the education my son was having in
Australia. It's not the fault of the kids the system is really
dumbed down here. I was helping my then wife with advanced Collage
mathematics with stuff I learnt in Form 4 (Grade 10). I never went
to collage in Australia but could do anything she was bringing
home. The schools get me totally mad here.... they really annoy me
with the BS they carry on with. But you'll never have to make your
kid a lunch again because it's all supplied at the school for cheap.

6. Collage is essential here if you want your kids to do better
than minimum wage. The cost is really high but in my mind worth it
if your don't want you kids to be living with you for the rest of
your life. Just by attending collage gives your kids a boost in
anything even the minimum wage race. Sadly alot are stopped more of
the cost rather than ability. (Lots of sports scholarships here
which you don't find in Australia)

7. Nope they don't exist. No milk Bar on the corner.....I miss the
milk bar. Gas stations are about the equivalent.

8. Consumer Electronics are cheaper in the USA but they are alittle
behind technology wise. Sorry America your HD TV is the lowest
quality (I am assuming they went with the format they did so you can
upgrade in 5 years time.) Buying when there are sales here save
heaps. I also agree with Paula's comments.

Comparisons.......
Expect to pay more on utilities (Gas, Water, Electronics, Cable,
Phone) is the USA. Expect to be completely blown away by the amount
you pay for any Medical, Dental or Insurance it's a lot higher
(It's an OMG moment). Fresh food (Meat, Vegetables, Fruit) is more
expensive. Prepackaged food is allot cheaper. Consumer Electronics
are cheaper. Consumer Goods are much cheaper. Clothing/Footwear
alitte cheaper. Housing is comparable. Cars are also comparable.
Cigs & Petrol are much cheaper. Beer is about the same but very
watered down (Find your self a good Mexican or German Beer)
Entertainment is alittle cheaper.

Be prepared you first grocery trip to the supermarket to be totally
thrown off kilter as you are going to know none of the brand labels
on the food. Also they don't use sugar in any softdrinks or candy
but corn sirup. It tastes different and makes you gain weight,
actually made me very sick to begin with.

Expect to run into a higher percentage of stupid people, there is
more people here it's just a percentage thing along with the
education system. Expect a higher majority of people know nothing
about where you come from or the rest of the world. (and humor
people and tell them you drove here if they ask)

Never get out of a car if pulled over by the police or laugh if you
get a sobriety test.

If you have any other questions I am probably best qualified to
answer them. It's a great deal of fun here once you are
established, the initial hurdles are very depressing and unsizable.
But if you are gamefully imployed and pulling a wage you too can
live the American dream.

I've also lived in the UK and Ireland as well. (Did not mind
Ireland while the UK was very expensive)

No guys as nothing is ever set in stone as for New Orleans I shall get my wife to change he heart on that as I am not too fussed about living there myself, As for moving it shall be a 8-10 years away and I hope if we do this it will be to a place like Chicago or Seattle or somewhere else

Thanks for your information I shall take a deeper look into it especially the job sites that were provided by Paula and if I do head over even for a holiday I am hoping to fit in some time and drop in and say hi

Are we scaring you off yet Jase?  *chuckle*

I would like to note I don't believe all women to be that way.  It just seems like anywhere I go, the ones that gain any level of authority are the same type that would fire someone because they kind of look like someone who used to pick on them or ignore them in high school from a certain angle.

I guess I'm beyond tired of those types having any power over my fate.

Here is the Wikipedia page on New Orleans:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orleans

Paulla offers about the most conventional wisdom that can be offered.  Times are VERY tough here.  I've been laid off yet again and finding gainful employment anywhere has proven to be no small undertaking.  Although many who are gaining wealth at the expense of the masses would deny it, the country is in a recession.  More honestly, the word "depression" would probably fit.

Still, it's not impossible to make a life here.  You just have to have an extreme iron will in times like this.  In my case, I'm tending to lose a little spirit as I seem to keep getting screwed over out of jobs because of power-hungry women trying to prove some imaginary point by landing me and others like me out of work.

Perhaps I shouldn't be venting this stuff here, but I think it's just fair you know the pitfalls that can be involved in living here before you commit.  Good luck either way!

Hi Jase,

DON'T DO IT.  No, I'm just kidding.  Every country has it's ups and downs - America is no different.  I honestly wish you'd reconsider moving to New Orleans though.  The weather is making is very bad for the economy and they're having a very difficult time coming back from Katrina - not to mention the other storms that keep knocking on the coast.  If you do move there you're going to be struggling - for quite some time (like maybe years).

That being typed, here's how I would answer your questions:

1. Wages are dependent upon your schooling and experience.  Good wages are hard to come by and many people find themselves with good schooling but not able to get into the market they went to school for.  Or, like me, they've worked in the marketplace for 20+ years and are just now starting to earn a decent salary.  When I started out (1989) I made minimum wage of $4.00/hour.  Nowadays (almost 20 years later) I make around $21/hour.

2. I don't know much about the housing market because I rent an apartment.  There are very few houses that come furnished - though most houses you get do come with "basics" - refrigerator, stove, dish washer.  Some might even have a washer and dryer.  Perhaps someone else can help better with this one.

3. Depending on where you live will dictate how good the public transportation system is.  Here in Chicago we have one of the best (and one of the most unreliable!) in the nation.  Boston, New York, Los Angeles also have detailed public transportation systems.  Recently I understand that the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which has only had a good public transportation system for about 10 years, has probably the best in the nation at this point.

4. Job market - again it depends on your skills.  In high demand now are medical jobs and teaching jobs.  "Blue collar jobs" (ie: warehouse work, store clerk, etc) are VERY hard to come by and pay very poorly.  I would suggest you check out sites like Monster.com and HotJobs.  In fact, I found my current job through Monster!

5. Schooling - another thing that depends on the area.  I will say this - being that I am stuyding to be a teacher myself, New Orleans (and Louisiana in general) does NOT have an exceptional school system.  They are grossly underfunded with too many students and not enough teachers.  Katrina didn't help that in the least.  Many parents choose to put their children into private schools which offer more options for the students.  But of course, at a price.

6. College - If you can see the theme of my post Jase, you'll realize it's "IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU WANT." *chuckle*  It is VERY hard for students these days to get into college - it's VERY expensive and we're not talking places like Harvard or Yale either!  Many states offer college tuition programs for children that parents get into when the child is basically born.  This is a SUPER good idea because it allows the parent to lock their child's education in at the cost it is today - versus what it will be like in the future.  I would venture to say 90% of student who go to college have to get student loans (if they aren't lucky to get scholarships or a ton of grants both of which are available but again are hard to come by).  I myself have over $8,000 in loans still from my FIRST venture into college (1985-1988) and now that I've returned to school I'll rack up at least another $32,000 just to get my Bachelor's Degree - which I wanted to get the first time.

7. Sadly, Wal-Mart (a place I've never liked and now DETEST after watching the movie made on how the company treats its employees) is a norm here in the US.  Target is another mass chain store that is starting to copy Wal-Mart in offering food and other varieties in what are called Super Target stores.  Target, for me, is WONDERFUL.  However, don't lose hope for the "mom and pop" stores.  They're out there as well.  Along with great shops owned by different cultures offering a myriad of foods I've never even heard of!

8. There are as many varieties of appliances as there are companies who make them.  American's are known for being disgustingly oppulent - something I, as an American, happen to agree with wholeheartedly.  There are actually good "times" to buy such things - "seasons" if you will.  The summer isn't a good time generally for appliances - don't ask me why.  Fall and Winter are (maybe because people are indoors more?)  When it comes to a major purchase like this, go for a name brand.  Yes you're going to pay more, but you're also going to get good warranties and a long life.  You get what you pay for in other words.  Kenmore, Westinghouse, GE are all good name brands.  LG (who makes phones and apparently now does appliances as well - who knew?) is getting up in the ranks.  There are more expensive versions like Viking - but the average person probably doesn't need to go THIS high end.  It's all up to you.

Now, whether you like it or not, I get to boast a bit. :-)  I am VERY proud to be an American and am greatful that this is where I live.  I do not want Obama for president, but I will vote for the person whom I feel is best qualified and we're lucky to have this opportunity.  We have more choices in this country, more freedoms in this country and more opportunities in this country than many other countries in the world.  We are looked upon as one of (if not THE) strongest nations on the planet and we have amazing diversity and culture.  To be TOTALLY fair, the US also has the highest crime rate of any nation, some of the poorest schooling of any nation, some of the worse pay of any nation and don't even get me started about health care!  What I'm trying to say Jase is that the decision is up to you.  If you do move here I believe you'll find more choices that you ever imagined - even in a country as wonderful as yours (which I would LOVE to visit some day).
