I am currently reading David Suzuki's "A David Suzuki Collection: A
Lifetime of Ideas" and recommend it as a good read if you have an
interest in environmental conservation, social preservation and
natural capital systems.

The book is a collection of papers and articles written by David
Suzuki during his career as an environmental presenter, lobbyist and
educator. The articles provide exceptional insight into the thoughts
of David Suzuki on a range of issues including economics, social
equality, cultural preservation, environmental conservation that is
mixed in with his scientific knowledge and training and refreshing
look on life.

Over the last couple of months it has been highlighted to me that
lack of understanding society has generally with respect to
sustainability. I for one have been studying and practicing
sustainable practices for more than 15 years, and yet I still yearn
to learn more and am amazed at how little I know.

It is one of the reasons why Sustainable Insight was established and
is one of the key drivers behind our recent expansion into the sale
of books, DVDs and other education material (we now have available
songsheets on sustainability for children) through the website.

One of the best things that we can do is to share with others our
experiences and expertise. The other thing we can do is to lead by
example. True Green, one of our best selling titles, published 100
ways to live a sustainable life.

Invest in you education. Practice what you learn. Share with others.

Happy reading.

" Assessing institutional reform in the Murray-Darling Basin "
by Dr Daniel Connell
Crawford School of Economics and Government
The Australian National University

Lunch will be provided. RSVP: p.adams@griffith. edu.au

Abstract:
We are now well into the third attempt in the last century to design
an
effective management system for the Murray-Darling Basin. (Both of the
earlier attempts, in the early 1900s and in the 1980s, resulted in
agreements to introduce comprehensive coordinated management based on
a
whole-of-catchment perspective but were later undermined by the
demands of
key interest groups.) All six governments with responsibilities in
the MDB
have conceded that existing institutions are seriously flawed.
Whatever
happens over the next few months it is likely that they will
eventually be
recast. As the new arrangements are consolidated what criteria should
be
used to assess their effectiveness? Given the complexity of water
management issues in the MDB, how can people and organizations
outside the
inner circle make a useful contribution to the evolution of water
management in the region? This presentation argues that detailed
scrutiny
by a better informed public could provide a major additional source of
energy to drive water reform and discusses a range of institutional
changes
that would promote that goal.

10.  Environmental Management on Horse Properties

Sustainable horse keeping presents an increasing challenge to horse property managers in Australia.  Many of the issues surrounding natural resource management and the use of appropriate tools (such as environmental management systems) are underpinned by research and development.  However, the success of applied management approaches is often limited by the lack of suitable implementation and outreach strategies.  This report for the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) provides some solutions to help address this challenge.  To download the report visit http://www.rirdc.gov.au/reports/HOR/06-137.pdf

11.  Book reviews

  • Greenhouse Solutions with Sustainable Energy, by Mark Diesendorf
Global warming is the hottest political issue of the day, and it is likely to become even more pressing over the coming years.  This is a positive, proactive book that proposes a set of policies and strategies for implementing the most promising cleaner energy technologies by all spheres of government, business and community organisations.  The book argues that despite being a coal- and oil-dependent country, Australia could achieve an ecologically sustainable energy system.  All we need is the political will.  For further information visit http://www.unswpress.com.au/isbn/0868409731.htm
  • Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble, by Lester R. Brown
“Our global civilization today is on an economic path that is environmentally unsustainable, a path that is leading us toward economic decline and eventual collapse,” says Lester Brown,  Founder and President of Earth Policy Institute.  “Although it is obvious that no society can survive the decline of its environmental support systems, many people are not yet convinced of the need for economic restructuring.  But this is changing now that China has eclipsed the United States in the consumption of most basic resources.  The western economic model - the fossil-fuel-based, auto-centred, throwaway economy - is not going to work for China. If it does not work for China, it will not work for India, which by 2031 is projected to have a population even larger than China’s.  Plan B has three components: (1) a restructuring of the global economy so that it can sustain civilization; (2) an all-out effort to eradicate poverty, stabilize population, and restore hope in order to elicit participation of the developing countries; and (3) a systematic effort to restore natural systems.”  For further information visit http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/PB2/index.htm

16.  The Relocalization Network

Relocalization is a strategy to build societies based on the local production of food, energy and goods, and the local development of currency, governance and culture.  The main goals of Relocalization are to increase community energy security, to strengthen local economies, and to dramatically improve environmental conditions and social equity.  The Relocalization strategy developed in response to the environmental, social, political and economic impacts of global over-reliance on cheap energy.  Our dependence on cheap non-renewable fossil fuel energy has produced climate change, the erosion of community, wars for oil-rich land and the instability of the global economic system.  The Relocalization Network helps Local Groups develop community activities and programs that can be used locally and as working models for other communities when the effects of energy decline become more intense.  For further information visit http://www.relocalize.net/about/relocalization

8.  The economics of rainwater tanks and alternative water supply options

A report prepared for Australian Conservation Foundation, Nature Conservation Council (NSW) and Environment Victoria by Marsden Jacob Associates has found that the widespread installation of rainwater tanks in Australian capital cities would mean big savings in water, energy and money.  To download the report visit http://www.acfonline.org.au/uploads/res_rainwater_tanks.pdf

9.  Bandicoots in inner Sydney

Brigette Sharp from the inner west Sydney branch of WIRES (the Wildlife Information and Rescue Service) has reported that a female bandicoot was recently trapped accidentally in the St. Vincent de Paul complex in the suburb of Lewisham.  Residents of a nearby retirement village had been feeding the bandicoot and its two young for the previous nine months.  The bandicoot was quickly released back into its territory.  "A breeding female suggests that there are at least a handful of animals out there", says Brigette.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be keeping a close eye on the site. "They will try to re-capture our bandicoot so they can do some radio tracking and hopefully find a colony," says Brigette. About four years ago a healthy adult male long-nosed bandicoot was trapped in Dulwich Hill. Prior to this they were thought not to still occur in the inner Sydney area. Loss of habitat, the prevalence of motor vehicles and predation from foxes and cats have caused the near complete disappearance of these animals from most of the Sydney region.
