Chau, what do you expect from a journalist whose nick name is "Apple Holic"? The arguments are not new, those have been going for years between close and open source.  We are still using Linux arent we? and most of devices these days have linux kernel, ie your routers, game consoles etc
I think the following two comments sorta summed it up, people need to be wary of what they have on their phones.
Android has a permissions-based security model: any app that wants to
access private information (eg location or contacts) has to ask for this when it's installed and get the explicit agreement of the user.
This report is NOT saying that 10,000 Android apps will steal your data, it's simply saying that 10,000 Android apps request permission to access something (usually location) on your phone. Wooo-hooo.
Given that Apple App Store applications can silently access contact details, it's like saying 225,000 iPhone applications steal your contact
details.
The original report is a thinly disguised sales pitch for an Android security tool and designed to provide easy hits for Apple bloggers.
(And, for the record, I don't own an Android phone but I DO have a house full of Apple products)

On both Android and iPhone the user has to give explicit permission for an app to utilize certain services such as location. The problem is that the user may download an app that obviously *needs* that service so the user gives permission. At this point the app can do
anything it wants with that service and the user may be no wiser. Sure
the app may provide the expected results to the user but what else is it doing?
Both iPhone and Android are susceptible but hopefully Apple is looking at this as part of the submission process, where Android requires technically savvy users to report possible problems.
I think the article suffers from a little sensationalism (gasp!) but brings up a good point that applies to both platforms although Android may be a higher risk because of it's open nature. One of the trade-offs
that some users are more than happy to accept in exchange for the other
freedoms that come with the platform.

Android has a permissions-based security model: any app that wants to access private information (eg location or contacts) has to ask for this when it's installed and get the explicit agreement of the user.
This report is NOT saying that 10,000 Android apps will steal your data, it's simply saying that 10,000 Android apps request permission to access something (usually location) on your phone. Wooo-hooo.
Given that Apple App Store applications can silently access contact details, it's like saying 225,000 iPhone applications steal your contact details.
The original report is a thinly disguised sales pitch for an Android security tool and designed to provide easy hits for Apple bloggers.
(And, for the record, I don't own an Android phone but I DO have a house full of Apple products)
