Hi everyone
This is a great idea to share our weimaraner longhair thoughts etc.
cos I always have lots and lots of thoughts!! I am really excited
about this group. I would love to see longhairs improve and I really
think they are. If we share our knowledge we could end up with some
seriously beautiful longhairs.
I saw my first longhair at a when I was a kid and I think it was in
New Zealand. My dad described it as a cross between a weim and a
golden when he first saw it (the two breeds we currently owned so I
was immediately intrigued). I next saw one of Rosemary Mayhew's at a
weim specialty show in 1989 and I have just blanked on the name. It
was a second generation down from tank/helga (not from her kennels)
and she was docked at birth by mistake. Then I went and met Helga and
she was beautiful.
At the time I still had two weimaraners so decided that if I had the
opportunity down the track I would go for a longcoat. Then just when
I started looking fate stepped in and Rosie Dawson decided to breed
her longhair bitch Aust Ch Bromhund chardonay to Grd Ch Aceweis Lazer
Beam a longhair carrier. I was very excited and watched all the
videos with rosie and put my name down for pick show girl. Rosie and
I were very excited when Char produced 6 longhairs out of 11 pups and
5 were girls. After checking them out I ended up taking Shadow, now
Aust Ch Smokeydees Bound fr Glory. From this litter there were 5
champions born - which I know Jill townley was extremely proud of her
dog siring. I called it the famous smokeydees b litter and just to
prove the name at the national shadows brother Ch Smokeydees Basil
Brush took best in show over all long and short coat dogs. Basil is a
longhair. Other longhair champs from this litter were Ch Smokeydees
boots n all, ch smokeydees beam chaser and their shortcoat brother ch
smokeydees braveheart.
So Rosie and Jill certainly gave me some really good genes to re-
start my kennels with. I had had two litters prior to kids and then a
break cos my dogs aged and I was pretty busy.
I have had 3 litters with Shadow for a total of 14 pups. I always
have bred her to a carrier that I liked never to another longcoat as
I aim to improve on what I have. So all her litters were mixed
longhairs and smoothcoats. I had two champs in the first litter, and
four champs in the second litter including one who is now a dutch
champion in Holland and the shorthair that Maree Pledger owns Boss,
and in the third litter there are two champs so far. The best sire I
used was Aust Ch Grausturm Cloud N Rain (who is from my shortcoat
bitch out of a Smokeydees A litter pup). He has sired 6 of the 11
champs.
I kept one longhair daughter from the first litter Sasha Aust Ch
Grausturm Dare to Dream. She has only produced the one litter to
another of my home bred smooth coats Grausturm Glitter Bug (who is a
chip son out of Heidi Aust Ch Grausturm Calypso Mist and brother to
the dog who has sired 6 champs). Some of you have seen the progeny,
Wendy owns the best boy Grausturm Ima Tassi devil and I own the best
girl Ch Grausturm In the Mist. All are longhair carriers, none are
longhairs as per my breeding plan. These two litter mates took dog
and bitch challenge at sydney royal outstandingly handled by Maree
Pledger and when we took 4 of the littermates to the royal melb last
year every one either won or came second in their class ( I had one
in each puppy and junior dog and bitch). It is through this litter I
aim to produced the best longhairs that I can that on a level playing
field will do as well as smoothcoats.
Anyway so that is my long story. I have 4 weis at present 2 longhairs
and 2 shortcoats. I love them all. All are girls.
Anyway the moral of my big long story is that I believe we must keep
breeding longhairs to shortcoats and incorporating the best genes for
the future.
cheers Ingrid Grausturm kennels.
