It is a complex question of locating lh pups in a mixed litter.
Yes sometimes they dont have stripes but sometimes they do!
The thing that I look for (after 23 years of breeding both varieties) is a
certain sheen they have. Also a very silky feel to their coats.
It used to be difficult to figure out which ones to dock by 3 days but now
it is not a problem. By 7 days the lhs tend to have a very different coat
with a very definite fleck through and the coat lays very flat.
On a new borns tail, I look closely and if it sticks out like a little brush
(even when stroked down) that is a shorthair. The longhairs tail coat lays
very close to the tail (flat). Now that might seem back to front but that is
what I have found. Of course you can look further to the genitals and check
the amount of coat on their bits and pieces. I have found the longs to have
a little tuft of fur on the end. Longer hair also at the elbow on the longs.
