My LH, Tully, has been suffering with very dry skin ever since we
received him (he is a rescue dog). His thyroid has been tested and
is fine. We have taken him off of foods containing corn. This has
stopped his licking at his paws and chewing at the base of his
tail. We do our very best to keep him flea-free with Front-line
(hard to do in a rural setting, with raccoons, squirrels, and assorted
vermin) and bathing. We are giving him fish oil capsules - two at
each feeding. There has been some improvement - the hair along his
back has filled in and is much softer than it was in October. But
the hair along his ribs and flanks is still extremely sparse (you
can see through to his skin at a glance). When I brush him, usually
every other day as he doesn't have a "show coat" to begin with, the
floor around him is white with doggy dandruff when brushing is
done. He still tends to scratch at his sides a lot.
Any further suggestions? I'll welcome any advice you can give.
Long-haired Weims are so uncommon around here, our veterinarian
didn't know there was such a thing (I think she is still doubtful he
is a purebred).
Thanks in advance for any and all help you can give.
