I promised that I would let you all know the current status of LHs in
Canada so here it is.
The CKC standard for Weimaraners was changed effective July 1, 2007.
This removed LH as a "very serious fault" and put it as a coat variety.
The Weim Assoc of Canada had been led to believe (for 5 or more years)
that the LHs would be shown separately. This ended up not being the
case. They did not fully inform the WAC until 2 weeks before the
National Specialty - after the premium had been printed and distributed
and entries made. So, at the National specialty in 2007 the LH had
separate classes BUT then they then competed directly with the SH for
points. In protest, all LH owners pulled their dogs from the Specialty.
CKC informed the WAC (- actually no, they didn't and continue to not
inform, the WAC) that at regular shows LHs are shown WITH the SH in the
same classes.
Since the Specialty a number of people have shown their LHs at regular
shows. One dog has finished its CKC championship (an Aussie import).
(IMHO this has hurt WACs position that LHs should be shown separately -
I was fully prepared to withhold showing my dogs until this was
straightened out but some people were not. But I digress...)
Currently, WAC is investigating what is required by CKC so that LHs can
be shown separately. They are doing this because that was what the
membership originally voted for. This may involve having them listed as
separate "breeds". Ideally it would be the same as how the Rough and
Smooth Collies are treated - separate breeds but really separate
varieties that you can breed together. Once they have the information,
they will go to the membership again with a number of options.
I've had LHs for 12 years and have been working to get the standard
changed for 10 years. Looks like I'll be waiting another 5 years to
straighten this out. Meanwhile, I'm taking 2 LH to a show next weekend.
