Hi Bonnie,
Yes, it's been an interesting discussion!
It has certainly changed this year, as there was discussion earlier this year
on the Weimaraner Breeders list, and I can tell you that it was not this
hopeful! Some of the things that were said were not so nice. I did think that
once Canada fell (so to speak) that it was probably a matter of time. But I
thought it would be longer. I have passed on the fact that this group exists, so
we may have some new members. You never know!
It would be good if they just decided to follow the country of origin - that
means LHs and no blues, and that way there could be no real arguement on the
matter. Not that it wouldn't happen anyway.
With the exclusion of LHs from breeding and showing, I don't think that it
will have damaged them. Many of the best lines carry the LH gene in there
somewhere, all they need is to identify the carriers, and breed them. If they go
to breeding LHs to LHs or LHCs, just because they are LHs, then they risk
getting some 'interesting' results, just the same as if someone is working with
a very limited gene pool, such as happens when a breed just gets to a country.
If they work with the best that they have, and breed them, they should get much
better LHs. Breeding the best to the best, just as we are all supposed to do
anyway. They just need to select for the LH gene as well, not just for it,
ignoring all else. This way the breeders will hit the ground running, not having
to do the old walk-before-you-run bit. If they ignore all else for the gene, or
the length of coat (something I am a bit concerned about) then they could also
find they have some unexpected nasties, from lines
that they may not be familiar with. Now is the time for all the bigger
breeders to 'fess up and tell people which dogs and bitches have actually
produced LHs in the past! Lots of things would have been hidden, I think!
The other thing is that I hope that some unethical people don't see it as a
chance to export sub standard stock.

Greetings!
I thought that I would pass on to this group that there is a stong move afoot in
the US to recognize the long-hair weimaraners in the AKC.
A part of the history of their exclusion here has to do with an early attempt to
get the 'blue' weimaraners recognized in the Weimaraner Club of America. The
question of recognizing the long haired dogs came up at the same time (this is
decades ago). For whatever reason, the two groups of dogs, blues and long hair,
got lumped together in the WCA decision.
Now, there are a number of people in the states who are fed up with the
artificial reasoning for the exclusion. The supporters of the long-hairs are
actively working to remove this barrier. I don't want to raise the question of
recognizing the 'blue' weimaraners. That is an entirely different issue. I don't
want to muddy the waters, and I don't want to unnecessarily politicize this
topic.
I worry that the decades of excluding the long-hairs from showing, and of course
from breeding, will have negatively impacted this segment of the breed.

Hi Wendy,
Yes can understand you being unsure of a response.
Someone the other day didn't even know that longhairs
existed...VBG. With the move afoot there to make them
"legal" that will surely change.
They are both Feldjaeger breedings. Jazmyn is a Lugar
granddaughter.
Yes am in for Melbourne Royal. At the present she is
the only LH being shown in Melbourne but I am sure that
there will more here for Royal as the VIC Weim specialty shows
are on the first weekend of the Royal as well.
Would be great to see you.
Wendy

Hi Wendy, and welcome!!!
So glad you found us. I am never sure about the response I will get from
the American lists when I get on there and try to talk up LHs! LOL!
It's interesting that you say she is hyper, I've only ever met two hyper
LHs before, most are like your Saxon. My Lara is so laid back, sometimes I
check to see if she's still awake!
We are a small list, with not a lot of posts, so you won't be flooded by
them. We DO love pics, so feel free to go to the albums part of the list,
and upload to your hearts content. ;-) What is their breeding? Are you in
for Melbourne Royal? I am not showing, but may be able to go and watch. Not
sure yet.
Cheers,

Hi everyone,
I have just found this group after a posting by Wendy
on an american wei list.
I live in Melbourne with 2 spoilt longhairs - otherwise
known as my kids. Saxon is 4 years old,and has been desexed
and Jazmyn who is Saxon's neice, 1 year old and currently
being shown.
Even though they are related they are so different in
personality. He is so laid back and such an easygoing dog,
and she is so hyper and full on, more than just being a puppy.
I look forward to hearing about everyone elses dogs.
How good to talk to people that know what our dogs are.
