Hi Roz,
I am having second thoughts after the terrible storms here last night. We
were without power for 3 hours and the storm damage and rain and that poor
girl being killed in a tent. I am just not sure it would be worth it. I am
getting some weather reports. I may end up coming down for the fri afternoon
show if things clear up. I will miss the morning show in that case so why
dont you collect my catalogue and use it. I was going to travel down lunch
time tomorrow. Obi to the vets at 10.15 so everything will hinge on that too
I suppose.
I will phone you tomorrow morning if I dont get an email back from you
tonight just so I know that you are not expecting to see me there for the
morning show.
Talk soon.

Hi all,
Bailey continues to go from strengh to strength. She still has her pink bandage
on, and still has not bothered it. I know she must be much better now, as she is
turning from Beautiful Bailey back into the old Bailey the Bugger. She is
getting naughty again!
I went to a show yesterday, and the energy difference between morning and night
was just amazing. Today she chewed my wallet, the clip off Kim's sandals and
pulled things everywhere in the bedroom. Instead of putting herself to bed in
the crate, now you have to get her and push her in. I've never been so glad to
see naughtiness in my life.
Hope everyone and their babies are well,
Wendy

Hi Wendy and Kim, I have been away for 4 days and
have just read about Bailey. My best wishes to you
all. Glad to also read she is on the mend. Keep your
spirits up. Have a read of this and maybe you can
picture Bevan with this happening.
I have been unlucky enough to have had a snake in one
of the dogs kennels. I blamed old Tosca's barking on
a bitch being in season, but he was barking for help.
I didn't realize it though and at the time I was
heading in to change the kennel bedding. As I was
about to put my arm in I saw a black mark upwards on
the back wall. Tosca was still barking and I should
have realized something was up. Well, did I let him
out quickly when I realized it was a snake. I had Bev
home with a sprained ankle and when he heard me
yelling he came hobbling out, (in jocks and with an
ice pack wrapped around his ankle) I don't think he
had ever heard me swear before then.
I got the shovel, he put one boot on and one 5ft
blackie was despatched to a better place.
Since then I have always done the bedding in daylight,
taken a lot of care and a lot more notice of the sound
of bark they give.
Hope all is well and we catch up soon.
I will be taking the 3 hairys. Stryka for
obedience,Nickle for show and Nova for the ride.

My parents and I had Min Pins since I was 16 (yes just
a little while ago, thanks for asking LOL!) And they
bred the first Toy dog to get his agility title, and
only the second dog over all. They bred 4 agility
title dogs, and 5 obedience titled dogs (with 4 of
them having both) and they were all show Ch as well,
up to including two UD's. It will be interesting

Thank you thank you thank you.
You would think we would all take our own initiatives and learn as much as
we can before a snake bite happens. We are all urged to learn CPR, so
really especially in Australia, all of us should learn as much as we can
about the venemous creatures we live with. Knowledge is power.

This is fabulous info Bill. Snake bite for our furbabies is everyone's
nightmare. Even when you take your dogs for a walk in suburban parks it is
always on my mind. Am always calling the dogs back to me when they are
around water.
Anyhooz, thanks heaps for posting info - I am glad to have learnt today.

Everyone should make sure they are aware of what sort of snakes can be found in
their area, and very importantly, what the local ones look like. Ingrid's right,
Tiger snakes are black, well they are in Tassie. Here they are brown with
lighter scales which may, or may not, look like stripes. We saw one with a very
bright yellow underbelly, whereas this one was a dark, dirty cream underneath.
If you go to a National Parks office, they can help you with what is around and
what your ones look like. It is important to know this as the antivenom is
specific. 10 minutes down the road, Tiger snakes are not found. They have Brown
snakes. A dog bitten there gets a Brown snake shot (a lot cheaper!) whereas
here, it's a combination Tiger/Brown. And the Copperhead gets the Brown shot.
But if the person took a quick look at this snake, it is a brown colour, and the
wrong shot means a different outcome. So please, for the sake of your babies,
become familiar with what can be found in your area.

Apologies if this comes through more then once . . .
. . . being a new member on moderation I forgot if I have already sent
something through about the Australian national Tail Injury Database
[A.N.T.I.D.]
I read a post from Ingrid about tail injuries and Ingrid has sent
through a private message however my replies to Ingrid do not seem to
make it so I am posting a message to Ingrid and others, here.
I note that, Ingrid, you are getting posts from this list as I have
received your list of LHC carriers privately to add to the LHC page.
Thanks bunches :o)
The State by State restrictions/bans on tail docking is NOT a done
deal. The fight is still one to have a number of amendments put into
the legislation. These amendments need the dog community's support
and participation.
NSW is the State with the best opportunity to have these amendments passed.
NSW has a review time of 12 month after legislation is passed.
In order for these amendments in NSW to go through, NSW needs
evidence. The evidence is being gathered through the A.N.T.I.D.
Through submitting images to ANTID@...
Ingrid and list members please send through details of all tail
injuries by filling our the form located here:
http://www.britfeld.com/database/form.htm
Please send your images of tail injuries to:
ANTID@...
Help bring about awareness about the A.N.T.I.D. by:
* letting your vet know
* letting your puppy owners know
* letting your breed club know
* letting your fellow dog friends know
* adding a text link on your web site back to http://www.britfeld.com/database/

hi wendy
hope you got some sleep last night!!! For others out there too: there is a lot
of great info around about using vitamin c to reduce the effect of snake bite,
delivered intra muscular by syringe say 15ml for adult wei. It doesnt cause
anaphylatic shock like the antivenene can.
Also tiger snakes are black and soak up the heat. After a hot day a large tiger
can still be very active until late night as Wendy has learnt. They will often
seek out places that may have also soaked up some warmth during the day. As a
ranger over summer it would get very hot and even at 10pm or later at night
wandering around in the bush we would often put up large snakes.
During summer snakes will come looking for water and dogs water bowls are ideal
for them. Putting up snake wire to keep them away from pets can help. It is pot
luck and with all the best of intentions it can still happen to anyone of us.We
continue to keep our fingers crossed hopefully bails is now outa the woods.

will actually drown in it. I had to pick her up during the night so her head was

Hi Everyone,
I joined about a week ago but haven't had a chance to post until now
and then I posted a message before my intro.

Hi group,
I have a page on my site for long hair carriers:

Would like to ask if you would look over it and send through any
dogs or bitches that I could add to this page.

Tale of the Tail
Australia has gone through various changes, on a State by State level, RE:
cruelty to animal legislation in particular tail docking.
Contrary to what you may have been told, have read or heard, tail docking is
not banned nationally. The RSPCA, AVA and Animals Australia would have you
believe otherwise as would some breeders for various reasons but the facts
remain that Western Australia and Northern Territory still allow tail
docking by vets.
It is not a national ban but rather a State by State restriction on varying
levels.
However the much bigger picture in all this is not a ban on tail docking but
a ban on pet ownership.
The ban on tail docking was just the beginning of a much bigger and grander
plan by Animal Liberations and feel good bleeding heart groups to stop us
owning pets. The single biggest player in this is People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals [PeTA].
Leading up to the tail docking restriction in NSW, it became very clear very
quickly that this was nothing to do with dogs welfare but rather an election
commitment made by the Labor State governments.
LABOR
{quote Amanda Fazio, NSW Labor Minister}
When we first looked at that definition we thought it fulfilled our election
commitment that tail docking . . . 1
{/quote}
A.V.A.
A.V.A. had its own reasons for joining forces with the R.S.P.C.A. and
Animals Australia [AA] which do not suggest that welfare was the single and
primary concern.
{quote A.V.A. Media release}
Tail docking is controversial within our profession but not illegal.
Practitioners who choose to continue to dock tails should be aware that
haemorrhage and death following dew claw and tail removal in young puppies
has been a source of client complaint and insurance claims. 2
{/quote}
The information available from various sources suggests that a *deal* was
made with an American born Animal Rights [AR] organization, People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals [PeTA].
To put all this information together is like trying to get through a complex
maze from which you feel toy may never come through the other end.
On a broad scale, the *deal* appears to be:
R.S.P.C.A., A.V.A., and AA would lobby our Labor State governments to get
the ban on tail docking through while PeTA would make demands that live
sheep export and mulesing be stopped.
PeTA has the money 3, membership 4, backing 5 and connections 6 to take on
the Australian Farmers, our Government and anyone else PeTA chooses to,
while the other three deal with the smaller issues.
It does not and will not stop with a ban on tail docking
Victoria dog breeders are already under threat on a different scale. Dr
Hugh Wirth has already been to see Steve Bracks to put in place legislation
for early age de-sexing of puppies. In a nut shell this legislation mean
breeders will have to de-sex their puppies before they go to their new
homes. I don't think I need to fully explain what this means on any level.
Certainly it is in keeping with what PeTA seek to achieve in terms of no pet
ownership, no breeding of any animals . . . and no eating of meat.
The VCA Inc was asked to make submission on early age de-sexing, which they
did not and the Victorian State government has taken this lack of response
to mean the VCA Inc supports early age de-sexing.
How do Victorian breeders feel about this?
Breed Specific Legislation [BSL]
This is already in place and thieving in Queensland with some 10,000 dogs
taken from their home just because they *look dangerous*. If this list has
any Queensland members, they may know the exact numbers.
BSL is yet another example of labor governments having a knee jerk reaction
to the bleeding hearts groups. This legislation has not worked in America
and indeed some States in American are making changing to BSL legislation 7.
{quote PetLaw 27 Jan 2005}
Today in the Virginia Statehouse a major blow was struck against the wealthy
animal rights activist who has been swamping us with bills. This in PETA's
back yard. HB 2927 the really bad bill we told you about was struck by the
sponsor. Del. Kilgore did the right thing and pulled this bill.
{/quote}
And so you sit there reading this and you maybe thinking, "they can not do
that", "that will never happen" . . .
But, the GREAT BIG BUT, they can do that, they will do that and that will
happen and all of it is made possible because the dog community have failed
to unit on each and every occasion when the dog community was threatened.
This was made very obvious during the time leading up to a ban on tail
docking . . .
. . . those who did not own a docked breed, did not understand fully why
docked breeds are docked, did not unit with those who did have docked breeds
and did understand why their breed is docked.
Those who do not own a breed which is targeted by BSL do not seem to show
support for those who do own a dog on BSL list.
And so it goes until there are no pets.
This all reminds me of a poem written by:
First they came . . . 10
<http://www.christianethicstoday.com/Issue/009/First%20They%20Came%20for%20t
he%20Jews%20By%20Franklin%20H%20Littell_009_29_.htm> First they came for the
Communists and I didn`t speak out-
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists and I didn`t speak out-
because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews and I didn`t speak out -
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.
<http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Martin%20Niemoller> Martin
Niemoller 8, Protestant minister 9, Germany WW2.
This is a poem with a very powerful message. The words, Communists,
Socialists, Trade Unionists and Jews can easily be changed for Pit Bull
Terriers, Great Danes, GSD and Weimaraners.
What needs to happen to get the dog community to unite regardless if HE owns
a Weimaraner or a GSD?
What will need to happen before the dog community will WAKE up and take
action?
On a personal level I have experienced a great deal of frustration within my
own doggy group of which some still today believe "it won't happen".
Q. Why does an organization like PeTA succeeded?
A. Dogged determination and realization the fight is a life long one, not
just an email here and a letter there to your local member.
I guess what has been THE single most disappointing thing in terms of a ban
on tail docking, is that some breeders actually want to see it go further,
to have the ANKC ban docked dogs from being shown! Because *their* dogs will
be disadvantaged in the show ring.
This kind of thinking leaves me absolutely speechless when one considers the
long term implications of what is happening now and at the rate it is
happening, we will all still be around to see it.
We will not have dogs to show, to walk with, to do obedience with, to track
with, to breed with . . .
Getting to know PeTA better
The easiest and quickest way to get to know PeTA is to read quotations 11
from co-founder and now President Ingrid Newkirk:
PeTA on meat consumption:
Eating meat is primitive, barbaric, and arrogant.
- Washington City Paper (December 20, 1985)
I openly hope that it [hoof-and-mouth disease] comes here. It will bring
economic harm only for those who profit from giving people heart attacks and
giving animals a concentration camp-like existence. It would be good for
animals, good for human health and good for the environment.
- ABC News interview (April 2, 2001)
Six million people died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler
chickens will die this year in slaughterhouses. [emphasis added]
- The Washington Post (November 13, 1983)
PeTA on health and research:
Would I rather the research lab that tests animals is reduced to a bunch of
cinders? Yes.
- New York Daily News (December 7, 1997)
Perhaps the mere idea of receiving a nasty missive will allow animal
researchers to empathize with their victims for the first time in their
lousy careers. I find it small wonder that the laboratories aren't all
burning to the ground. If I had more guts, I'd light a match.
- The Chronicle of Higher Education (November 12, 1999)
Even if animal tests produced a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it.
- Vogue (September 1, 1989)
I wish we all would get up and go into the labs and take the animals out or
burn them down.
- "National Animal Rights Convention" (June 27, 1997)
PeTA on the human race:
I am not a morose person, but I would rather not be here. I don't have any
reverence for life, only for the entities themselves. I would rather see a
blank space where I am. This will sound like fruitcake stuff again but at
least I wouldn't be harming anything.
- The Washington Post (November 13, 1983)
There's no rational basis for saying that a human being has special rights.
A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. They're all animals.
- Washingtonian magazine (August 1, 1986)
Humans have grown like a cancer. We're the biggest blight on the face of the
earth.
- Washingtonian magazine (February 1, 1990)
PeTA on pets:
Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human
manipulation.
- Harper's (August 1, 1988)
One day, we would like an end to pet shops and the breeding of animals.
[Dogs] would pursue their natural lives in the wild ... they would have full
lives, not wasting at home for someone to come home in the evening and pet
them and then sit there and watch TV.
- The Chicago Daily Herald (March 1, 1990)
The bottom line is that people don't have the right to manipulate or to
breed dogs and cats... If people want toys, they should buy inanimate
objects. If they want companionship, they should seek it with their own
kind.
- Animals (May 1, 1993)
I don't use the word 'pet.' I think it's speciesist language. I prefer
'companion animal.' For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People
could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people
had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be
refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a
protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child.
But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of
forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out,
and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship - enjoyment at a
distance.
- The Harper's Forum Book, Jack Hitt, ed., 1989, p.223
In the end, I think it would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of
pets altogether.
- Newsday (February 21, 1988)
PeTA on strategies:
Our nonviolent tactics are not as effective. We ask nicely for years and get
nothing. Someone makes a threat, and it works.
- US News & World Report (April 8, 2002)
We are complete press sluts.
- The New Yorker (April 14, 2003)
Probably everything we do is a publicity stunt ... we are not here to gather
members, to please, to placate, to make friends. We're here to hold the
radical line.
- USA Today (September 3, 1991)
PeTA on terrorism:
I will be the last person to condemn ALF [the Animal Liberation Front].
- The New York Daily News (December 7, 1997)
PeTA on the ultimate goal:
There is no hidden agenda. If anybody wonders about - what's this with all
these reforms - you can hear us clearly. Our goal is total animal
liberation. [emphasis added]
- "Animal Rights 2002" convention (June 30, 2002)

HI all, here is an update on what has happened since yesterday. Not long after I
put the message on the net, I was giving the vet an update. Bailey was still
producing massive amounts of saliva and was gurgling with every breath, as she
was only able to swallow sometimes, and was coughing and dry retching, but
wouldn't drink. He said that she was dehydrated so I had to take her in to be
put on a drip. When I went back to pick her up, she could actually walk,
although it was very slowly.
When we got home, she lay down on the blaket with us in the lounge room and went
straight to sleep. She got up about 3 hours later and put herself to bed in a
crate, and went right back to sleep. She slept on until about 8-30 this morning,
poor baby is so weak. This morning I have had kisses!! Very soft and slow, but
kisses none the less. She looks so thin. She has finally had a drink, and is
interested in food, but is still having troulble swallowing, so it is tiny bits
of very fine mince. It seems that with Tiger bites, they get flacid paralasis,
as well as it attacking the nervous system, and it breaks down the muscle. So
then they can't swallow, and as they produce so very much saliva they will
actually drown in it. I had to pick her up during the night so her head was
down, to let the saliva drain out of her troat. She had tears too. She would be
just laying there, unable to move, looking right at me with tears rolling down.
Heart breaking. We have to keep her very quiet, as
someone around the corner had a Mal bitten by a Tiger, didn't keep him quiet,
and three days later he had a cerebral haemorage. I don't think we will have
trouble keeping her quiet, she is as weak as a kitten and any movement is
followed by rest and sleep. She has lost so much weight, looks like she has lost
muscle mass too.
This whole episode brings up some interesting points. There are a number of
things that we 'know' about snakes, that they don't come out at night, that by
keeping grass short it is protecting against them as they don't like to be in
the open, they they go for water. Well this one was at about 11 pm, we have seen

decomposed granite area. There was another one that went over a large open area
of pebbles and onto a large area of concrete in another place. This one also
passed water on the way.
We have bought rolls of wire called mouse and snake wire. It is smaller than
avairy wire and is very tiny. That is going up everywhere. I am supposed to be
at a show, but since this, all our dogs are inside, and I have to get this wire
up. Before Christmas, we spent thousands on the runs to keep boarders safe, but
I never really thought where we had our babies was at risk.
So we are completely out of the woods yet, but Bailey is better than she was.
We were so verylucky, as a high percentage of dogs bitten by Tiger snakes don't
make it.
And thank you all for the very kind words, I was very touched. I am sure they
helped her, they have certainly helped me.

Hi Wendy and Kim,
My thoughts are with you. I have Obi sick also at the moment. We were off to
the vets Australia Day. He had uncontrolable shivering and a temp and just
not well. He was started on antibiotics as he had a strange swelling come up
on his back that the vet thinks could contain a foreign object that will
eventually come to a head and need surgery to drain. Wow. The things we do
for our dogs and the things they do for us!
I am thinking of you. Keep me posted on her progress.

Just come in from mowing in 38 degree temperature so I can keep the dogs in
safety from those dreaded snakes. Thought I might call it quits for the day as
it's so hot but after reading about Bailey I'm back out there with new gusto.
Will be saying a prayer for her and keeping fingers crossed. Having gone
through this with one of my boys many years ago (it was a red bellied black) I
hope it turns out like my boy Justin who not only survived against all odds but
went on to sire several more litters and lived to a ripe old age. Good thoughts
all heading your way.

Hi Wendy,
Sorry to hear about Bailey. Glad to hear about the snake.
I have said a prayer that she makes it. Give her a pat and tell
her we are with her all the way.

Late last night our 5 month old girl, Bailey, was bitten by a Tiger
Snake. When I went out to get them for bed, she staggered out of the
yard, and when I looked in there, here it was in the middle of the
yard with it's head up. It's head was soon severed. As it was,
Bailey seems to have gotten it, but it also got her. The yard is
actually in the courtyard, attatched to the house. It must have
gotten in by going past our Dachshund and Wheaten, but the light was
out, and they didn't see it.
We were at the vets until 2am, she had the shot and looked 'not too
bad'. We set off for home, and half way home she started fitting on
the back seat. We got home & I rang our Vet, who lives not that far
from us, and he turned around and headed for our place. She was on
the back seat of the car, having terrible muscle spasms, eyes not
following, heart now very slow and beating hard, and yet still
wagged her tail like mad when ever Kim came into her view. What a
darling girl. Her tail was the only thing she could move by herself.
I spent what was left of the night, on the lounge room floor with
her. I really didn't expect her to see the light of day. The fisrt
tiny sign was when she put a very shaky paw out and touched my hand
when I was laying beside her.
Amazingly, at lunch time, she is still with us. She can actually
swallow, lift her head, and can now lie with her head between her
feet. She does have fluid in her lungs, you can hear it, and she
still won't drink. She does look better than she did, but we will
not be out of the woods for another 2 or 3 days. So if anyone on the
list is so inclined, how about saying a little prayer for Bailey the
Bugger, she needs all the help she can get.

Hi Roz,
no, I'll have almost the full compliment.
*Phantom, (Grausturm Ima Tassidevil)
*Scarlett (Greydove Rhapsodyin Blue (AI),
*Riley, our homebred hairy boy, (Syrinx Devil Inthe D Tail) LH
*Guy the Wheaten (Dancestar Mi Guy) but don't tell him he's a Wheaten, he thinks
he's a Wei and a Dachie at the same time.
I may also have our Min Pin girl puppy Flute (Kimico Little Flute) or even our
Dachshund Oscar (Tradedach Ferris), but I don't think so. All of these will at
least have thier CD one day.
My parents and I had Min Pins since I was 16 (yes just a little while ago,
thanks for asking LOL!) And they bred the first Toy dog to get his agility
title, and only the second dog over all. They bred 4 agility title dogs, and 5
obedience titled dogs (with 4 of them having both) and they were all show Ch as
well, up to including two UD's. It will be interesting training Weis and Min
Pins at the same time! We are members of the Companion Dog Club up here, and
there are medals presented to Show Champions who also attain obedience titles.
They are Dunbar Medals, Bronze for CD, Silver for CDX, and Gold for UD. And They
put a big pic of the dog up in the club house. Now I've had a good look, and
there are no Weimaraners, no Longhairs, no Min Pins, and no Wheatens There are
already a couple of Dachies, but I like the idea of being the first with the
others.
Speaking of the first, I am in for a little Ag show in Adelong, and am taking
Lara as well as Riley, the very first puppy we bred. This is the town my father
was born in and my family first settled there in the 1840's and many still live
there. The lady who is taking the entries tells me they will be the first
longhairs shown there, although I was thinking that perhaps Deb had shown there
before. Looking forward to seeing you. Bringing Nickle?

Hi Wendy, Will be good to catch up with you again.
My girl is in season so I probably won't be bringing
her. She would just drive Stryka nuts the whole
time,so I've booked her into the kennels. Not good
when trying to trial. Are you only taking Phantom.
As for the bad day at a dog show, well I suppose we
all have to take the good with the bad but I can think
of a lot better things to do than sit at a show all
day long.

Hi Roz,
I'm going to the Sunday 6th. I am the only one
anywhere near, and it will take me about 3 hours or so
to get there. The judge gave Phantom a 23 point BOB,
so I would be MAD not to. Mind you, that was with
Maree as pilot, so I'm not expecting anything, but I
just have to give it a go. With girls in season, he
will probably just do his total moron impersonation.
But then again, a bad day at a dog show is better than
a good day anywhere else!

Are any of you going to the shows and obedience trials
at Wolumla (Sapphire Coast) next weekend.
I am going up to have a go at them and would love to
catch up with you. Just as easy for me to do them as
drive to Melbourne. 3 1/2 hrs to Melb 4 1/2 to
Wolumla.
