Hi all,
I have put up an album for any Crufts pics anyone may have. Anyone can
add pics to this one. I have put in two pics of Mace who Allyson
mentioned, although these are not from Crufts. These are from Bernice,
via Tasha. ;-) Perhaps some of the pics that Fred took at the show
could go in here too? Allyson, I hope you have some of the most
beautiful Twiggy that you could contribute. Do you have one of her
being a TV star? And Mar, some of Dutchess?

Today the NSW Specialty Show is on here in Australia, and it seems to
be a show full of controversy, and it hasn't even started yet! Will
put up results as soon as I have them.

Regards,
Wendy

Special congratulations to Bernice who rarely shows, whose male Mace
was the only LH exhibit to gain a first and second place at Crufts
where it matters most, in the field trial and working dog classes.
one of the few working Weimaraners there on the day. Lovely write up
in the dog press too.

Hi Deb and all,
Congratulations to Deb, Dale and of course Kurt. We are actually
seeing some wins in the LH relm here. Last year there was the Best in
Group that Aust Ch Bromhund Trudi won in NSW, then list member Ingrid
with Runner Up to Best In Open Specialty Show, followed on the very
same day by a Runner Up to Best in Champion Specialty Show with the
same LH girl (and RU to her brother LHC at the Open Show!!) and now
Deb and Harm with a Runner Up to Best In Group. Used to be when judges
didn't even look right to the end of the group line up!
All we need now is a Runner Up Best in show and Best In Show at an All
Breeds show, and LHs will really have arrived!

Hi Irena,
There are a couple of different ways this happens. With the ACT and NSW
Specialties ( the only ones I can comment on) they send a list around and you
can pay for a trophy or a sash, for the classes in either breed, or the In Show
ones. There is sheet with a grid showing the award and how much that will cost,
and the people's names as the award is sponsored. Sometimes someone will
sponsor both the trophy and sash for a particular award, or just one of them.
Two years ago we sponsored all the LH ones for both the ACT shows. Basically the
ones that don't attract sponsorship the club has to pay for, so clubs do fund
raising to pay for the judge and costs of running the show. Raffles, things like
that. The only publicity is a list in the show catalogue with who sponsored
what.

Occasionally there will be a special trophy at an All Breeds show, usually in
memory of someone who had that breed and was a member of that club. They are
usually perpetual trophies or awards, so the person may get to take something
home that has to be returned the next year, or they may just win it, get to have
a photo with it, and then they get something smaller. That is how the official
trophies at the Royal Shows work. The NSW Club has it's own trophy as well for
BOB or RUBOB at the Sydney Royal and that can't leave NSW and has to go back the
next year. So when Ingrid won it, she never got to see it, as she had to stay
behind and work (so I got it engraved and took pics for her).

With the BIS trophy, I have seen times when it is the very last to go if the
club are giving expensive trophies. Sometimes a couple of kennels or individuals
get together and sponsor that one.

With the value, there is a minimum put on awards by the canine body - just to
make sure people don't get totally lame prizes. I'll find out what that amount
is for you. But the sky is the limit. Here sometimes there is cash and a sash
at shows. Money is helpful, but I like trophies. Most here are things for the
house or dogs, dinner sets, picnic sets, glass or chrystal dishes, dog beds or
toys. We won a heater once. Southern Gundog at Easter had heaters for all of the
In Show awards. BIS just got a bigger heater. You really don't get cups, but I
have to admit I really like them. Lots of people consider them dust collectors.
We also have won engraved chrystal mugs with the award and year on it.

Kibble usually comes from the companies. Clubs contact them for sponsorship,
and they usually get a big mention or an ad in the catalogue. Usually they like
put signs up around the ring here or something. Really helps to have a member
who works for the company!

Hope that helps a little bit.
   Wendy

Irena <balticweim@...> wrote:
   Dear All,

I have a question again regarding organizing a dog show. I have heard
that in Aussie you have trophies sponsored by individual breeders,
kennels or other persons/companies(?). I'd like to understand how it
works.

1) Do you have the same thing at all breed shows, or only
specialties/club shows?

2) What does the sponsor expect in return? Publicity, in what form?
Are their names announced before awarding the trophy to the winner in
the ring? In a magazine? Somewhere else?

3) How to avoid a situation where everyone wants to sponsor the Best
In Show trophy and not any other placements?

4) Who decides how big the trophy/cup/prize (?) should be, a minimum
value, so to say?

5) In what forms do the awards actually come? Cups, bags of kibble,
ribbons, ....?

I'd appreciate any responses!

Thanks a lot in advance,

We have donated several Perpetual Trophies to the ACT Weimaraner Club.
These are trophies that we have bought ourselves which are for a particular
award, one is for Challenge Bitch and one is the Puppy of Breed. It is
allowed to be taken home by the winner and then must be returned for the
next show for the next winner.

There isn't anything given back to the people donating perpetual trophies I
think its just another award but we name them after special dogs, some are
in memory of a dead dog.

Its a donation to a club so it should have to be any particular value but
some clubs here like the Royal shows I think there is a value a trophy must
be and its very expensive but don't think so for regular clubs.

HI Sandra
congrats on Gradys win. He is a lovely longhair male!!! And dont forget he is
AUST CH Grausturm Jack OHearts (graded excellent)

The judge knew what he liked and went for it, choosing a nice strong shorthair
male from tonis for best of breed and kimba - ANZ ch grausturm in the mist for
bitch challenge and RUBOB and her puppy Merlin Greyflyte thnx grausturm (imp nz)
took minor puppy. Reserve challenge went to Michael Wickhams bitch and reserve
challenge went to one of Sue Shrigleys dogs.

If anyone has any goodlooking wei longhair bitches out there Grady is really
keen to pass on his good looks, I hear the equipment is all polished and ready
and never been used yet (LOL). We need more with substance and great movement in
the ring.

Hi Everyone

Just a quick brag on behalf of my baby. Grady (Grausturm Jack
Ohearts) took BOB at Launie Royal. The judge Kurt Nilsson of Sweden
likes his weis to have substance and good movement. In many breeds he
refused whole classes or all.

In the short coats Leisel Albion handled Grausturm Little Devil to
Aust Bred in Group but got knocked out by the Best in Show winner in
General Specials. Happy Birthday Leisel for yesterday.

Toni Drew took BOB for short coats, another dog with substance.
Congratulations Toni.

Hi Cheril,

Welcome. Not too many hairies in NZ! I do know there have been a couple of
litters over there containing LHs in the past year or so, several were docked as
the breeder didn't know they would be longs. Longhairs don't have their tails
docked, as with that hair, there was no need. Shs, on the other hand, tend to
suffer a bit from whaking it on things, as we are discovering here in Australia
now that we have a docking ban.

A lh girl from Rifleman came across the ditch to a breeder in Tassie this year
(I think it was this year!) There has been only two now, I think, make up their
title in NZ, as they are shown against the sh, and I guess they never really
took off. There were actually longs there before they moved over here. They are
recognised in every country except the US and Canada, but I believe Canada is
officially recognising them soon.

About them, well they are wonderful. On the whole they tend to be a bit more
laid back than the regular ones, although there is always the exception. That is
my opinion, but I know there are others who feel the same.

The gene that produces them is a recessive one, and can be carried by smooths.
A lh to lh mating can only produce lhs, sh to sh that are not carriers of the
gene can only produce sh.

A mating of carrier to carrier can produced lhs, shs that are carriers, and sh
that are not carriers.

Carrier to lh can produced lh and carrier.

Carrier to sh non-carrier will produce all sh pups, they can be carriers or
not.

Any sh pup of a lh will be a carrier. There is a grid that can be used to look
at %, but of course that is worked out over 100 pups. As a breeder, you will
generally not get whatever it is that you want. VBG. Mendle (Mendal?) I believe
was the guy that worked out how recessive genes worked a very long time ago. And
I probably spelt his name wrong! He was the guy that used sweet peas. I learnt
about him in school and thought it was one of those things I would never use
again.

My website is down at the moment, but if you use the link at the bottom of this
email to go to the group homepage, go to 'links' on the left hand side of the
page, you will find links to many of the members sites. Most of us have lh and
shs, and you find members from all over the world.

Any questions you might have about lhs, fire away. This group has quite a brains
trust when it comes to hairies.

Nice to hear from you,

Regards,

Wendy
