Just a reminder that the 2008 Qld Disc Golf Open is on the weekend of the 16th & 17th of August at the Yeronga course.
The event is held over two days, however there will be a single round competition on the Sunday morning for those that can't handle 3 rounds of disc golf (yet).
For more details of the event go to the QUDA website..
I must confess, they're nothing amazing, but let people know if they want a
better copy to email me the filename and I'll whack one up for them

Ist round tee off time - 7:30 am - yes that early.
(Why? - I don't really know - someone else wanted it at that time)
if you come later - you might get us as we come round for round two. (maybe)
All this is a prelim to the up coming Qld Disc Golf Open which is on the 16th & 17th of August at Yeronga.

(I suggest viewing this as an HTML email rather than plain text if you have the option...)
A number of people who have come into the sport over the last year or
two tend to get all their information through friends about what's
happening. This is fine, but you may missing out on some interesting or
important news, announcements or information.
The purpose of this email is just to let you know about the information
pathways available. Please read below if you are not familiar with these. There are a wide range of options for different interests; however, there are a couple of things that are relevant for everyone.
MOST CRUCIAL INFO All players must ensure their email address is correct in the AFDA database, and know how to log in to the AFDA site. No one can do this for you. It is vital to make sure that you're able to register for competitions, and that you're getting necessary information for your leagues/tournaments.
To do this, go to www.afda.com and log in. - If you don't know your login details, go to the left menu Help -> Forgotten Password. Enter your AFDA number (or search for your name if you don't know it) and your password will be sent to the email account that you registered when you joined the AFDA. - If this doesn't work, the email address that you have registered into the system is probably not your current one. Use the "Wrong Email Address" section of that same page to set up a new email address. Once this has happened, you will then need to use the Forgotten Password option to get your password for the site.
Congrats! You now have your login details. Make sure you record them for future reference - you'll need them to sign up for many competitions. Once you have signed in, go to Membership -> Edit My Details and ensure that everything is current and correct.
ALSO VERY IMPORTANT It's highly, highly recommended that all Ultimate players in SE Qld join the Brisbane Ultimate email group. This is a general announcement list to let you know about upcoming events. It averages less than 1 email per day, and you can unsubscribe at any time. It's the single best way to find out about new leagues, tournaments and other events.
To join, simply send a blank email to buda-ultimate-subscribe@yahoogroups.com A confirmation email will be sent to you, to which you just need to hit "Reply" and then "Send".
You're now on the group - welcome aboard. You can unsubscribe at any time by sending a blank email to buda-ultimate-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
MORE OPTIONS
INTRODUCTION
There's 3 general categories: Yahoogroups, email lists, and websites.
1. Yahoogroups are typically open lists for a particular
topic/club/competition. Some are for announcements, some for discussion. 2. Email lists are generally for a specific competition and only include
participants in that particular competition. The main one is the AFDA
registration system, used for many leagues/tournaments (where you log in
to the Australian Ultimate website with your membership number). UQ
Ultimate also uses a list for their league. 3. I imagine you all know what a website is...
Yahoogroups have traditionally been the major method of communication,
though some competition directors are starting to use the AFDA
registration system more to ensure that all players receive necessary
information. Websites, as usual, are used for a slightly different
purpose.
*** 1. YAHOOGROUPS ****
WHAT ARE THEY?
The web address for a given group is sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/GROUPNAME
You will need a Yahoo ID to use the web features of a given group.
To subscribe to a given email group, send a blank email to GROUPNAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
For example, for the buda-ultimate group:
Web: sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/buda-ultimate
Email subscription: buda-ultimate-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
You can set up each Yahoogroup to either send you every email
individually, a daily digest (1 email per day containing all messages),
or not to send you email (but enable you to access the messages on the
website).
You may also unsubscribe from a Yahoogroup at any time by going to the
home page and selecting "Edit Membership" -> "Leave Group"; or by
sending a blank email to GROUPNAME-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
--- FOR ALL REGULAR SE QLD PLAYERS ---
Brisbane Ultimate announcements: buda-ultimate
This group is for announcements on Brisbane Ultimate. It is not a
general discussion list, so traffic is low (average <1 email per day). A
great way to keep up to date on what's happening, such as tournaments,
leagues, and other events.
Queensland Ultimate announcements: qld-ultimate
Similarly, this is an announcement list for Queensland Ultimate. Traffic
is low, once again (<1 email/day).
--- SPECIFIC LEAGUES/AREAS ---
Monday night league (BUML?): yufl_intermediate
This stems from the days when the Monday night league was called YUFL,
and was aimed at intermediate standard... This is primarily an
announcement list for the Monday night league, though it also receives
some announcements about other Brisbane events. It remains low traffic
(<1 email/day).
Women's league (Tuesday nights): wufl
An announcement list for the women's league on Tuesday nights. It also
receives some general announcements and other information relevant to
Brisbane women's Ultimate. This list is low traffic (<1 email/day).
Brisbane Premier League (Thursday nights): dog-cup
From the days when the league was called the Dog Cup... This is an
announcement list for the BPL. However, this league has been using the
AFDA registration system to communicate in recent seasons, and this list
is mainly general Brisbane announcements and information relevant to
men's or higher level Ultimate. Low traffic (<1 email/day).
Gold Coast: bond_ultimate
This list was originally just for Bond Uni, but now seems to be the
primary list for Gold Coast Ultimate (including the current Gold Coast
Ultimate League). Low traffic (<1 email/day).
Byron Bay: byron_ultimate
They're not quite Queensland, but they're nearby and we consider them
ours :-) Ultimate in and around Byron has been solid over the last few
years, playing locally, sending teams to tournaments, and also holding a
tournament or two. General chat list, low traffic.
--- SE QLD CLUBS ---
Firestorm: firestorm-ultimate
Firestorm is Brisbane's representative men's Ultimate club, playing at
national level. If you want to know what's going on with the club or are
interested in playing some higher level Ultimate, feel free to join and
see what's happening. Low traffic out of season, moderate traffic as the
open/women's season comes around.
UQ: uq_ultimate
UQ is one of most established Ultimate clubs in Australia, running its
own league, entering club teams in all other Brisbane leagues, and the
reigning Australian University champion. They use a specific email list
for their league, but this list is for general club announcements (also
receives some general Brisbane announcements). Low traffic (<1
email/day).
QUT: qut-ultimate
QUT have been active on the Ultimate scene for the last few years,
competing in local leagues and also at university championship level.
This list is for general club announcements (and occasionally receives
general Brisbane announcements). Low traffic (<1 email/day).
--- OTHER LISTS OF INTEREST ---
Australian Ultimate announcement list: aus-ultimate
Like buda-ultimate and qld-ultimate, a general announcement but this
time it's Australia-wide. Information on all sorts of things, from major
tournaments to updates on the Australian teams touring North America in
the lead-up to Worlds in August. Usually low traffic.
Australian Youth Ultimate: aus-youth
General stuff related to youth Ultimate (under 19). Low traffic.
QUDA administration: quda-admin
For reasonable discussion on administrative things in Queensland
frisbee. Low traffic.
Australian Unis: afda-unis
Pretty quiet these days, but might be fired back up in the lead-up to
AUG. Low traffic.
*** 2. EMAIL LISTS ****
Some competitions will use a specific email list to communicate to all
participants. The most common example is the AFDA competition
registration system (at www.afda.com), as used by BPL, Halibut, etc.
This involves players registering online, and the competition manager
can then contact players in that competition.
The most important thing to say here is: *ensure your email address in
the AFDA database is correct*. If it's wrong, you won't be getting info
that you need.
*** 3. WEBSITES ****
There are a few websites that may help you keep track of Ultimate at
various levels.
Australian Flying Disc Association www.afda.com
This is the website of our national sporting organisation, our governing
body. It has all sorts of information, from info about what's happening
in each state, to resources on frisbee administration, to the history of
Ultimate in Australia, to all policies governing our sport, etc etc etc.
More importantly for most people, this is where you access the online
registration system, and it also has a tournament calendar about what's
coming up in Australia.
Queensland Ultimate Disc Association www.quda.org
Kinda like the AFDA of Queensland... QUDA administrates, organises and
builds the sport in Queensland. Lots of info here as well.
Brisbane Ultimate Blog brisbaneultimatedisc.blogspot.com
Not an official site by any means, but an excellent blog run by JdR, one
of our experienced hands in QUDA. A witty, informative and entertaining
read (you can pay me later, JdR), it's a really good site for getting a
more relaxed and colourful look at what's happening around the place.
Ultitalk www.ultitalk.com
Finally, Ultitalk is a forum site for Ultimate around the world, but
it's essentially turned into a discussion forum for a bunch of Aussie
frisbee players. Sometimes interesting, sometimes not... Like any forum
site, really.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Whew.
Well, I hope that was worth it for at least a few people.
If I've missed anything, my apologies. Let me know and will try to add
it to the list.
Cheers all. Hope that you are now better informed about this crazy sport
:-)
John
P.S. Apologies for inbox-filling to all older denizens who've known this stuff for years and are on all the lists they need already...
UQ trials for AUGs selection are going to be held on Wednesday 23rd, and Wednesday 30th, from 5 to 6pm on Oval 7 at St Lucia. If you are unable to make these times, then please let us know, at uqultimate@....
Any UQ students are welcome, including people who have deferred due to state, national or international competition (looking at you Worlds people). You are still eligible to play.
Try outs will be fairly informal, we are particularly interested in seeing you play, and in knowing who is keen on going.
As in other years, we have not discriminated against those Frisbee
ppl who can’t make it to Halibut, and this is a notice that you are
welcome to the Halibut party:
Saturday night at The Fox hotel, Melbourne St, South
Brisbane – top floor.
Even if you can’t play, come down and see the action.
The final is on Sunday 2.55-4.20pm.

Hello again,
Sorry for the spam - just a quick reminder that there is pick up this
Sunday 20th July at Kalinga park and we would love to see anyone out
there. We are also hoping some folk will be able to spare a small
amount of their time to help mark out fields, details are below.
Where is Kalinga Park?
About 10km north of Brisbane City. The main entrance to the park is at
the end of Park Avenue (near corner of Henry St or Kalinga St), but
access can also be gained from Toombul Terrace. For Public Transport,
try www.translink. com.au and type 'Kalinga Park' into the journey
planner, or phone 13 12 30. Look for the 320 or 321 buses that stop in
the neighbourhood, or its possible to walk from Toombul Railway
Station. Thanks JDR!

become familiar with the lay of the land etc.
So details are:
When: Sunday 20th July
What: 12-2pm bbq for Dan and his bride to be, see below for details
Then: 2pm - 2.30pm volunteers help mark out fields and a quick letter
drop in preparation for Halibut
Followed by: 2.30pm game of pick up for anyone wanting to hone their

If you can help with the field marking and letter drop that would be

Hey everyone,
Halibut is only ten days away. Countdown time! Full info below.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE: Some teams are still looking to recruit players,
particularly *women* (remember the tournament rules are that a maximum of four
men can be on the field for a team at once). Register yourself on the 'looking
for a team list' and teams will get in touch with you.
If you've having trouble registering or want some personal encouragement to get
involved, contact me by reply email or the fabulous Peta McNaughton
(peta.mcnaughton@...).
Register at: http://www.afda.com/rego/showcompetition.php?competitionid=465
We're also looking for volunteers – mostly people who can turn up a bit early
and stay a bit late each day to help set up. Let us know if you think you can
help!
Cheers,
Jason

Full Halibut Info
What is Halibut?
Halibut is Brisbane's traditional two day mixed Ultimate tournament, and is open
to every Ultimate player in South East Queensland and beyond. For newer
players, Halibut is an excellent way to improve your skills, make new friends,
and generally get into the frisbee 'scene'.
When is Halibut?
Halibut is held over the weekend of 26-27 July. Be there by about 8.30am on
Saturday, a bit later on Sunday (times will be confirmed once the draw is
finalised). There's a big party on Saturday night (see below).
Where is Halibut?
Halibut is being held at Kalinga Park, Wooloowin - about 10km north of Brisbane
City. The main entrance to the park is at the end of Park Avenue (near corner
of Henry St or Kalinga St), but access can also be gained from Toombul Terrace.
For Public Transport, trye www.translink.com.au and type 'Kalinga Park' into the
journey planner, or phone 13 12 30. Look for the 320 or 321 buses that stop in
the neighbourhood, or its possible to walk from Toombul Railway Station.
What do I bring?
1. Fees to pay on Saturday morning (see below).
2. Comfy shoes, hat and other Ultimate playing gear (if you haven't organised a
team shirt, bring a white shirt and a black shirt).
3. Mess kit for eating with - plate, bowl, knife, fork, spoon, cup and
waterbottle.
Lots of people also like to bring stuff like personal sunscreen, a chair, spare
socks, silly hats, team banners and paraphanalia, a team esky, music-machine,
twister set, etc. Its up to you really.
How much is it?
Halibut is $75 per player, although this is dropped to $70 per player for teams
which have three new players on them. Please pay on Saturday morning.
Some of the stuff your money gets you: fields, insurance, two breakfasts, two
yummy lunches, Saturday after-game feed, unique Halibut merchandise that has
something to do with your head size, first aid and sunscreen and shade marquees,
and of course, the party (see below)
There's a Party?
Yes, no Ultimate tournament is complete without a party. We're taking over the
Fox Hotel Rooftop on Saturday night from 8pm. The Fox is on Melbourne St, South
Brisbane, under the bridge from South Brisbane Rail Station and the Cultural
Centre Busway Station.
Most Ultimate players like to dress up for fun, so the party theme is "Stars of
the Silver Screen" - think Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Audrey Hepburn, Frank
Sinatra, Judy Garland, Bette Davis ... or R2D2, Rocky Balboa, James Bond,
Batgirl, Cruella de Vil, Indiana Jones, Thelma and Louise, Marcellis Wallace,
Gandalf, Bugs Bunny, Eraserhead, Charlie Chaplin, Willie Wonka, etc etc etc.
If you haven't been to an Ultimate party before, you're in for a treat. And if
you can't play on the weekend, you can still come to the party.

Hey all,
Halibut is looking to hire two people to labour during the tournament (Sat 26-
Sun 27 July).
Maybe you're injured and won't be playing, but want to come on down.
Maybe you're broke and wouldn't mind a few bucks rather than playing.
Maybe your housemate doesn't play Ultimate but would be good at this.
Jobs would include collecting and chasing registration money; collecting scores
after games; keeping water containers filled; helping get lunches sorted and
organised; plus general troubleshooting on the day. You'd probably need to
come to a meeting of the organising committee in the week before the tournament
to get briefed.
We're looking at about $200 per person for the two days, plus meals and party
access.
Get in touch with me by next Monday if you're interested.
Cheers,
Jason

and won’t have time to do anything more formal), and it would be great if
someone could bring some cones, and you could all carry on with a pickup game afterwards.
If someone can manage the pickup, just carry the story line from here.
Needless to say his family is pretty excited, and we’ve
not met her either. Her name is Elizabeth, she hails from the Pilbara, and is
apparently a talented young lady.
So, please come along, but if you can’t and want to
pass on your wishes, I’d be happy to be the conduit.

QUDA is happy to pay for a number of ultimate players to be
trained as Level 1 coaches. The course take two days with the first being a
general how-to-teach day, and the second is ultimate-specific. The following
dates have been set aside for the second training day (on the back of school
teacher – who already know how to teach - training courses), and subject
to interest, we can find suitable first day courses.
6 October– Townsville
4 December – Brisbane
Coaches who complete the course will be accredited by ASC.
If anyone is interested, pls email me back. I know this is a
long way out, but have a look at your diary now, and pencil it in. If the
dates don’t suit you, still let me know, and if there’s enough
interest, we can look at an extra course.
Any queries, email or call, or ask me at Monday league.

Hey all,
We're going to have a go at a monthly e-Newsletter regarding all things disc
sport in Queensland and surrounds. Lots of links at the bottom, but here goes:
1. Upcoming Brisbane Ultimate Leagues
Brisbane's Monday night Mixed League (BUML) kicks off its new season next Monday
7 July. There have been two very successful Learn2Play sessions the last two
Mondays, so expect to see a lot of new faces on the field.
Toowong's Tuesday night Women's League (WUFL) has its 'no obligation free quote'
warm up night next Tuesday 8 July, followed by a six week league. This season
sees the formation of some new teams, including UQ and a Mellow Yellow offshoot,
who'll be looking to battle it out to be the champs.
The University of Queensland's St Lucia League starts on Wednesday 23 July, with
pickup being played in the leadup.
And the venerable Brisbane Premier League hits Round Four this Thursday night
Meanwhile, the Gold Coast Ultimate League goes into Finals mode from next week.
And in Townsville, plans are underway to kickstart Semester 2.
2. Youth Nationals
Did you know a whole bunch of young Queensland guns will be heading down to
Sydney for the 2008 Youth Nationals on 11-12 July? The "Northern Lights" (name
to be confirmed) includes Jack Lilwall, Reece Stewart, Will Larkin, Trevor
Lovering, James Jackson and Doug Crowley. Strengthening the numbers are the
Byron Bay and area contingent (which I like to call 'ours' anyways) of Torren
Lamont, Isaac Stone, Abe Stone, Jordan ‘Jordy’ Stone, Tane Crosby, Zac
Devine. And Brock Cunliffe is going but playing for some other team :).
Go fellas!
3. Volunteer of the Month
This month's Volunteer of the Month is Blair Sheard of the UQ Club. In between
studying for her uni exams, Blair managed to get a restaurant organised for
sixty five Women's Development Camp ladies and friends at a reasonable price and
on a Saturday night. Blair's stepping up to help took a big possible headache
off the hands of the other volunteers. Cheers Blair!
Want to help out? Ultimate runs on volunteers and they're currently being
sought to help with a variety of things for Halibut and Mixed Nationals. Just
get in touch and we can work out what might be right for you.
4. Worlds
Its only a few weeks until the Australian teams hit the fields in Vancouver,
Canada, for the World Ultimate and Guts Championships (aka Worlds). Worlds is
held every four years and is the equivalent of the Olympics for the frisbee
world and Australia is hoping to do well in all six divisions (Open, Women's,
Mixed, under19 Men, under19 Women and Masters).
Several Queensland or recent ex-Queensland players are on the teams, including
Mike Neild, Brett Matzuka, Jonathan Potts and Paul Denyer (Open, and with Rueben
Berg as Assistant Coach), Al Don and Kirsten 'Notty' Nott (Mixed), and Mat Ryan,
Chris Burwell and Piers Trutuer (Masters, plus Piers is coaching the under19
Men).
If you see any of these people ... FIRE 'EM UP! ;)
5. Halibut Tournament
Halibut is on again on 26-27 July. I see that this morning we ticked over the
100th player registration. There's still time to get your name down - and
several teams are still looking for players (and several players are looking for
teams ... see a pattern there?) If you've never given an Ultimate tournament a
go before, Halibut is the one to try!
6. Website of the Month
One of Queensland's oldest continuously-operating Ultimate teams, Dojo Mojo,
recently launched a blog in an effort to combat the rumours that surround the
group. Check it out at: http://dojomojo-ultimate.blogspot.com/
7. List Admin
Sorry if some of you get this multiple times, but for others, I hope you see
other frisbee email lists that you might like to be part of. To get on those
lists, send an email to nameoflist-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (eg
qld-ultimate@yahoogroups.com)
Keep an eye on the email lists and various websites for further details on these
and other disc-doings. Or if you need anything – get in touch.
And finally, if you've got something you'd like to see in the next e-Newsletter,
planned for the first week in August, get in touch.
Cheers,
Jason

Sorry to all those this does not concern, it will be a one time thing.
Anyone interested in playing with UQ at AUGs this year, please get on the mailing list, so that we can keep you updated with training times, fees, jersey info and dates.
To do this, send an email to uqultimate@... with "Unigames" as the subject.
All selections for AUGs will occur within the month, due to payment deadlines, so this is a priority if you are at all interested in playing for UQ.
For those of you who are not aware, the Australian University Games is an annual multi-sport event between Austalian Universities, that's taking place from Sunday 28 September to Friday 3 October in Melbourne. Ultimate frisbee (Mixed) is a medal sport at the games, and UQ will be sending a team down to represent our university. Any student that is enrolled at UQ is eligible to play.
Hey you!
Just a reminder that Halibut registration closes this Friday.
Go to http://www.afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=805 or
http://www.afda.com/rego/showcompetition.php?competitionid=465
This is because we need to confirm numbers and head sizes for the *looks both
ways sneakily* mystery gift!
You can register later, but you'll be missing out on the mystery gift, and of
course, you're making it harder for the organisers to get everything just right
for you. And if you're already registered, did you remember to give your head
size?
Halibut is on 26-27 July - only a few weeks away.
Remember, Halibut is aimed at being the one tournament a year that every
Ultimate player in Queensland and surrounds, from the greenest beginner to the
most broken oldie, can get into.
If you can't find a team, don't worry, we'll find one for you. Every year there
are individuals and small groups that we help out.
Get in touch if you need a hand or more information.
Cheers,
Jason
