It was proposed last year at the AGM that the
next SPM meeting be completely separate from the
SEM/TEM meeting and be help in Melbourne at the
University of Melbourne. I'm interested in comments relating
to this proposal and dates for for the event.

Colleagues,<br><br>Apologies for my absence at
the last meeting. I'm not sure if this sort of option
was discussed or not but most universities have
country retreats. Could the meeting be held at one of
these? The main problem is that SPM facilities would be
lacking, but is this a big problem? We all know what one
looks like and in any case some retreats would still
permit a company rep. setting up an instrument for
workshops, etc. The big benefit would be the reduction in
cost, which would allow more students to come. For
example the ANU retreat (<a href=http://kioloa-fs.anu.edu.au/
target=new>http://kioloa-fs.anu.edu.au/</a>)
costs something like $20/head/night. Ok, so it's not
the Ritz, but the beach is bloody beautiful. I'd be
happy to do a rough costing if people were interested
in pursuing this type of
option.<br><br>Cheers,<br>Tim.

Hi All,<br>Apologies from me too for missing the
last meeting. I support the idea of separating from
the EM meeting, I think we've got enough interest in
SPM here in oz (and NZ Ashok!) to go solo, and I have
a slight feeling of being 'buried' in the EM
society at the moment. As to venues, both Shane's and
Tim's locations look palatable.<br>Tim - how 'grungy'
are we talking for Kioloa, it doesn't bother me (I've
heard good things about the colloids student conference
held there) but it might put some people off? - I
guess it depends on what level we pitch the conference
at?

Hi everyone, I dont' really mind about the venue,
one thing we have to make sure of though is that it
doesn't clash with the student colloid conf. That was a
very bad mistake on my part not checking that the last
time. But as for my say I dont' really mind either
venue and it would be good if we could get a large
amount of students along.<br>Cheers Gordon.

I support the concept of a conference/meeting
that has more of a SPM focus. The venue is not such a
concern, as the air travel to Australia is around the same
cost as an internal fight in NZ (exclud. Perth)

Hey has anyone heard from Paul Mulvaney? He had some ideas about an invited
speaker. Does anyone else have any ideas?
