Re: [Aushiker] Stoves & o/s treks

Hi Mac

I walked Milford in April a few years ago just before the "official" season
closed. It was already pretty chilly then. I don't know if they still follow the
same procedure, but at that stage bridges over the creeks were removed between
April and October in order to avoid avalanche damage during winter. All the
facilities in the huts were also considerably scaled back in that period.
There's also the issue of access to the trailheads which are not readily
available out of season. Although Milford is really only two valley walks with a
ridge climb in the middle and not (usually) particularly strenuous or long, I
would suggest July would almost certainly be extremely difficult and perhaps
even dangerous. I would recommend contacting the Department of Conservation
(DOC) in NZ for their current advice. Whatever you decide, a honeymoon hike will
be a wonderful kick-off to married life!

Tom
