** Dear All
DEC wishes to provide an update on the wildfire southwest of Balingup over
the weekend of 14 - 15 February 2009. The fire is now well contained and
being monitored by DEC's regular surveillance system, softwood industry
personnel and DEC crews working in the vicinity. Salvage harvesting of the
merchantable pine by the Forest Products Commission is occurring. This
operation may experience ignitions of fallen tree tops and needle bed from
hot material in the ground, creating fire and smoke hazards from time to
time in some areas within the fire boundary. The damage caused by the
fire has been assessed and damage to some of the facilities and the forest
at the Wrights Bridge recreation site identified. Therefore, the Wrights
Bridge recreation area will remain closed until further notice. Motorists
are asked to be aware of fire personnel and other vehicle traffic associated
with the incident. Smoke may still be emitted from the fire ground and
motorists should drive with their headlights turned on. *Road Re-opening
details:* Nannup- Balingup, Cundinup and Hawter Roads are *Open* Please
drive slowly with headlights on and please look out for fire trucks and
workers on these roads. *Road Closure details: *The following road blocks
are still in place:
- *All internal plantation roads are closed to general traffic.*
*A bridge load limit *of 8t has been placed on the bridge on a small track
known as Crossing Road (near Wrights Bridge).
