Sport and Recreation and Tourism Minister Bob Kucera said today that
Western Australia's trail enthusiasts were the big winners in the
latest funding from Lotterywest for the State's 3,000km network of
recreation trails.
About $120,000 will be spent on trails in and around the Hills area.
"WA has one of the most extensive trail networks in the world for
walking, riding and biking and contributes significantly to the
physical activity levels of Western Australians," Mr Kucera said.
"Since its inception six years ago the Trails Funding Program - a
partnership between Lotterywest and the Department of Sport and
Recreation - has invested more than $3million in trails."
Local projects approved for funding this year were:
¡P Munda Biddi Trail Foundation - $50,000 to provide
trailheads and interpretive informational signage for the recently
completed first stage of the trail between Mundaring and Collie;
¡P The National Trust of Australia - $50,000 to upgrade the
Mt Helena to Wooroloo section of the Railway Reserves Heritage trail,
which forms part of the Golden Pipeline project; and
¡P Shire of Mundaring - $20,000 for the development of
marketing and promotional tools to support an annual trails festival
in conjunction with the Chidlow Progress Association and the
Mundaring Tourism Association.
Local member Jaye Radisich MLA welcomed the Lotterywest funding.
"Tourism and economic development projects have received a good deal
of attention within the Hills lately," Ms Radisich said.
"There is a close relationship between the development of
tourism, environmentally based activities, other service oriented
endeavours and the economic development of a region like the Hills,
which is not an area built on heavy industry or manufacturing.
"This additional funding for walk trails is another step in the good
work that is already being undertaken in local trail development."
Mr Kucera said more than $560,000 in Lotterywest funding had been
allocated this year to build or upgrade recreational trails, with
more than half of the funding to go towards the building of new
trails.
A further $171,000 would be used to upgrade existing trails.
Mr Kucera thanked the many thousands of Western Australians who had
contributed to the enhancement of the network by purchasing
Lotterywest products.
