Hi
Had an opportunity Friday to walk into the new campsite on the Coastal
Plains Walk Trail, Prickly Bark. This campsite is 2.7 km from the Southern
Terminus of the Trail at Cooper Road, Bullsbrook. As with all campsites on
this tail, it has a three sided shelter (Bibbulmun Track Standard Design),
fire ring, toilet, water tank and tent sites.
It is quite a nice location, facing east with views over to the Darling
Ranges, however, it is near a water source and farmland with the resultant
insect problems.
Walking in the Trail is poorly marked from the Terminus to the first 4WD
road crossing but otherwise in good condition and reasonably easy to
follow. However, when you reach the "T-Junction" which marks the spur to
the campsite, you can easily go the wrong way and miss either the Trail
north (if heading north) and the campsite (if heading south). Currently at
this intersection there is NO campsite trail markers indicating the
direction to the campsite, rather there are two poles with trail markers.
These two poles are separated in such a way as to make it easy to miss one
or the other depending on which way you are heading. Furthermore the one
pointing to the campsite does not indicate that this is what is down the spur!
The campsite it self is a fairly dusty place (coast plains) but is nicely
sited facing east. That said, there is some aircraft traffic and if you
are there during the week you may encounter traffic from Pearce Air Base.
It is also a haven for mosquitos and flies! So go prepared!
The water tank was about 70% full, water was clear and the no sign of
mosquito larvae. Also no sign of nocturnal animals.
Cheers
Andrew
