Hi

For those in the northern suburbs, Mainpeak are now at Osborne Park. The
shop is at 94 Hector St Osborne Park (Unit 2), 200m north of Hutton St -
pull into the carpark at Tradelink.

Andrew

Agreed, it is not an official campsite. It is not marked as a campsite
on the CALM maps I have (1999 second edition). I'm sorry if I have
mislead other readers with my reply to Tony's initial enquiry.

When I first saw the area (2001) the reeds/vegetation had been
flattened immediately to the west of the little bridge. There was no
"clearing". The site is cleared now (2004) - and (perhaps
unfortunately) a top spot. But not a top spot to minimize pollution of
the brook. There was no need to damage any vegetation to pitch a tent
or three when I was last there (July 2004).

Distance-wise a campsite is need in the area. If one walks from Cape
Leeuwin to Deepdene (17.5km) on day 1, Deepdene to Trig Hill (21km) on
day 2, day 3 is either:

Trig Hill to Contos - 11km of very easy, if not pleasant walking
through the Boranup forest.
Trig Hill to Prevelly Caravan Park - 29km. A bit of a long stint
carrying a pack and assuming you have the stamina to walk into
Prevelly, it is only 12km to Ellensbrook Campsite on day 4 making day 4
rather short.

Boodjidup "clearing" is a nice 23km. You can see why it is used.

Southbound the distance issue persists. From Ellensbrook you have the
option of 12km to Prevelly or 29.5km to Contos.

When I did the Cape to Cape I stayed in the Prevelly Caravan Park. I
remember I had planned to camp a Boodjidup but the tent was wet and the
thought of climbing into a wet tent did not appeal. I was pretty tired
though at the end of that day's walk. I opted for an on-site cabin and
hung the tent up inside to dry it!

Was Boodjidup ever a designated campsite? Could it have been in the
first edition of the 5 CALM maps? It is certainly well positioned.

A couple of comments. This is not an official campsite and the damage from
campers has been quite extensive. There is a small clearing but
unfortunately people have decided to extend this clearing, flattening
vegetation. Also as Paul points out there is no dunny, meaning a very
significant climb out of the valley to get away from the creek.

They are there. Just inland and up the hill a bit. IIRC not visible from
the track or was that Mt Duckworth?

No problems with dunny paper for me there, but not a nice camping spot anyway.

Hi Tony

LOL ... not quite sure what you mean by a "bit bumpy" but from what I can
remember they are pretty level campsites. Not sure if the fifth one has
been built yet. Even if is a yes, there is still one short, requiring a
camp either wild or at say Contos or Point Road.

Hi Tony,

Happy New Year.

From South to North, last time I was there:

Deepdene is flat and it is a small campsite. There is a picnic table
and bench and tank/dunny.

Trig Hill is just that - a hill with a lookout. No dunny/water tank.
Room for one tent only or you could sleep under the stars near the look
out. I camped in a clearing east of Trig Hill just past Davies Road in
July 2004.

Boodjidup Campsite near the bridge over the brook of the same name is
flat, room for plenty of tents. This is a nice site now. No dunny -
water from brook (in July)

Ellensbrook Campsite - heaps of room, flat, water tank and dunny.

Moses - have only walked through this site a few years back and the
water tank and dunny mentioned in the guidebook were not there. There
was a picnic table/benching.

Mt Duckworth (luckily this is at the foot of the Mt) was sandy, flat
with room for plenty of tents. Table/bench/water tank & dunny.

When I was at Moses campsite toilet paper was strewn all over the
ground so I didn't camp there. Trig Hill was similarly adorned.

Hoping there are plenty of safe and interesting hikes in 2005.

Regards,

Paul

Andrew,

Thanks for the heads up on that site, it's a good one.
Generally speaking, are the C to C campsites fairly level, or are they a bit
bumpy?

Hi

For those interested, I will be leading an easy on track pack carry for
Perth Bushwalkers Club on February 19 and 20, 2005. This is really a
social walk, rather than a serious weekender. If you are interested
please
drop me an email directly at andrew@.... Details of the walk
are:

February 19 - 20, 2005 - Boonerring Hill - 13.2 km + 500 m

Hankering to get back into the bush? Well maybe this little all on-track

overnighter may be just the thing for you. Following the tradition of
the
past couple of years, Andrew is again leading a gentle social backpack
to
shake out those summer cobwebs. We will be heading off late afternoon
on
Saturday, February 19, 2005 for a leisurely (but medium paced) walk into

Boonerring Hill, where for those inclined a chilled wine or two maybe
enjoyed whilst the sun goes down. Next morning we will be up with the
birds to enjoy the sunrise over a leisurely breakfast. Following
brekkie,
we will wander back to the vehicles and then on to the Elizabethan
Village
for an early lunch. I would expect to be back at the cars around 10:30
am,
well before sun gets a chance to really bite. Andrew rates this walk as
easy, but it will be at a medium pace. Camping on Boonerring Hill will
be a
sleeping bag and mat affair, no tent, as it is a rock! Note the
distance
and elevation is for the whole week-end. Please contact Andrew at
<mailto:Andrew@...>andrew@... to register your
interest.

More information about the fire from the Bibbulmun Track Foundation website
(www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au)

FIRE AFFECTED SECTION NOW REOPENED! The Bibbulmun Track on MAP 1 between
Brookton Highway and Sullivan Rock is now OPEN and a diversion of 1.8km is
now in place due to quick work by CALM staff.

Two fires were deliberately lit on Monday 20 December 2004 in two locations.
One of the locations was the on Canning River Bridge. The other fire,
started near scenic drive, has burnt 2000 hectares north and east of the
Track. Both fires are now out.

We know that little of the Track has been burnt and we are very lucky not
have lost any campsites, though the Canning River bridge has been lost to
the blaze.

Walkers on this section will need to follow the diversion around the burnt
Canning Bridge site.

From the North walkers will divert down Four-ways Rd to reference tree BM
72/2, and follow an old track to BN 72/2, BN 72/1 and close to BO 72/2 and
cross the Canning River just east of the old bridge site onto Scenic Dve and
continue to walk west until turning left onto Edgelly Rd/Bibbulmun Track.

From the South walkers will turn right off Edgelly Rd/Bibbulmun Track onto
Scenic Dve and pass the old bridge site. Watch for diversion markers to
cross the river and walk along an old track close to reference tree BO 72/2
and along to BN 72/1, BN 72/2 and BM 72/2 until reaching Four-ways Rd to
rejoin the Bibbulmun Track.

Walkers in both directions should watch for diversion trail markers with a
black Waugal on a white base (instead of gold).

"Two fires were allegedly deliberately lit sometime before 11am Monday 20
December 2004 in two locations. One of the locations was the Canning River
Bridge / Bibbulmun Track crossing. This fire is now out but the other,
started near scenic drive, has burnt 2000 hectares north and east of the

Investigations are already underway to determine the cause of the fire.

At this stage we know that little of the Track has been burnt. We are very
lucky not have lost any campsites though the Canning River bridge has been
   lost to the blaze.

While the Brookton Hwy has been opened to vehicle traffic, the Track will
remain closed until further notice. A diversion is yet to be put into
place.

This page will be updated as further information comes to hand. Last
   updated 7.15am 21/12/04."

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR

WITHOUT PREJUDICE

All I wanted to say was "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year".....

So, I ran it past my solicitor on the grounds that I don't want to upset
anybody in these politically correct times,

And this is what he came up with.

From me ("the wishor") to you ("the wishee"):

Please accept without obligation, implied or implicit, our best
wishes for an environmentally
conscious, socially responsible, politically correct, low stress,
non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the summer solstice holiday,
practised within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion
of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the
religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice
not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

We wish you a financially successful, personally fulfilling and
medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted
calendar year 2005, but with due respect for the calendars of choice of
other cultures or sects, and having regard to the race, creed, colour, age,
physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform or sexual
preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting you are bound by these terms that:-

- This greeting is subject to further clarification or withdrawal.
- This greeting is freely transferable provided that no alteration
shall be made to the original greeting and that the proprietary rights of
the wishor are acknowledged.

This greeting implies no promise by the wishor to actually
implement any of the wishes.

This greeting may not be enforceable in certain jurisdictions
and/or the restrictions herein may not be binding upon certain wishes in
certain jurisdictions and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wishor.

This greeting is warranted to perform as reasonably may be
expected within the usual application of good tidings, for a period of one
year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever
comes first.

The wishor warrants this greeting only for the limited replacement
of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wishor.

Any references in this greeting to "the Lord", "Father Christmas",
"Our Saviour", "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer" or any other festive
figures, whether actual or fictitious, dead or alive, shall not imply any
endorsement by or from them in respect of this greeting, and all
proprietary rights in any referenced third party names and images are
hereby acknowledged.

This greeting is given under the laws of Western Australian – INSOLVENCY
NOTICES.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR

Regards

Hey, good one, Harry.
I really enjoy reading about other people's experiences on the BT.
As if walking is not enough, you had other interruptions as well.
Tell Margie that I sympathise with her about the walk up to Monadnocks hut
("my hut").
I've done this many times on maintenance visits and, even just from Randall
Road, it's a bugger, being a slow, relentless rise. I prefer the short sharp
hills becos they seem much easier.
Hope to see you out on the track next year. Training starts on January 1,
hangovers notwithstanding.
I promise not to bring the tarp. Too embarrassing.
I've got a new Golite backpack which should cut enough weight to allow for a
2-litre wine cask.
Cheers,

Tony

Hi Andrew and all Aushikers,

Thanks for that info. Sorry about the delay in replying, but the office has
just introduced a you beaut system which allows me to access my work emails
from home.
It works really well.
The only drawback is that I now CANNOT access my work emails at work,
because doing so crashes my computer terminal.
I am reliably told that this little problem will be rectified "by about this
time next year".
As the Americans say, go figure!
I'll sign up to Aushiker from home when I get a moment and cut the office
out of the loop.
Cheers,
Tony

Let me answer myself. From <http://www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au/
<http://www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au/> > ...

"Two fires were allegedly deliberately lit sometime before 11am Monday 20
December 2004 in two locations. One of the locations was the Canning River
Bridge / Bibbulmun Track crossing. This fire is now out but the other,
started near scenic drive, has burnt 2000 hectares north and east of the
Track and while still burning, has been contained overnight.

A diversion is yet to be put into place.

This page will be updated as further information comes to hand. Last
updated 7.15am 21/12/04."

I second Paul's comments for your story. There is no way my wife would ever
set foot on the track let alone sleep out overnight. My good wife likes soft
beds and hot showers and none too fussed on dehydrated foods. Harry, you are
a very luck man and you should buy a Lotto ticket for the 31st and share in
the big prize because I hope to have a share in the prize also. It is only
$31 million, a share would be nice.

What is the secret in getting reluctant spouses out onto the Track? Anyone
with clues!

Thanks Paul.
When we were sitting at Beavis after a challenging day of walking I asked
Margaret "Could you imagine two years ago you would have been sitting here
with me in the middle of the bush having a meal of Pasta" Margaret replied
"Never in a million years I only wish we had started years ago".
So there you go Kathy the first step (or walk) is always the hardest.
Regards.
Harry.

After last year's success of my End to End on the Bib Track then another one
the other way this year (Excluding Pem to Walpole), Margaret my wife decided
it was time she had a go so here is the story of a lady who up till six
months ago had never done any bushwalking apart from walking around tourist
sites, if your sick of reading about Bib track adventures delete now
otherwise read on and enjoy our adventure.

The Harry and Margie Walk. 2004.
On the 19th of September 2004 We left Kalamunda at 6-30 am in light
drizzling rain arriving at Hewitt Hill hut at 10-30am decided to push on to
Ball Creek where we arrived at 1-30pm so far so good.
Next morning (20th) left the hut no rain arriving at Helena at 10-30 am
decided to continue on to Waalegh at 2-30pm found it tough between Helena
and Waalegh but arrived in good spirits.
Left Waalegh (21st) at 7-00am decided on a short leg to Beraking arriving
there at 10-30am.
After a good rest left Beraking next morning (22nd) tackled the long slow
climb up Mt Dale took about 2 hours stayed at Mt Dale hut for an hour then
walked on to Brookton, Margaret was having trouble with her full leather
boots even though she had worn them for nine months before the walk very bad
blisters on her heels.
We decided to go back to Perth and change to a "Soft" pair and start again
from Brookton a few days later. End of walk.
Started the walk again on the 2nd of October from Brookton Highway walking
into Canning hut, very busy day long weekend 11 people in the hut that night
4 others in tents.
Left Canning at 6-30am (3rd) for Monadnocks Margaret found the last hill to
the hut very hard but we made it and that day pitched the tent that night
had a very good nights sleep.
Left Monadnocks over the mountains to the new Mt Cooke hut stayed there that
night, beautiful day.
Next morning it started to rain pushed up over Mt Cooke arriving at Nerang's
open spaces in the rain rather than pitch the tent decided to go on to
Gringer Creek where that night Margaret developed a bad cough and by the
morning was quite unwell returned back to Perth that day the 6th October.
End of walk.
On the 10th of October Margaret was still feeling sick so I decided to go on
alone from Nth Bannister arrived at White Horse hut that day but overnight I
developed my first cold for about 5 years and had to return back to the
highway in pouring rain but the water running off Boonering Hill Rocks
looked good...... end of very short walk !
On the 20th of October restarted the "Harry and Margie" walk
from Nth bannister having recovered from everything and feeling great, well
to cut a long story short, and save some bandwidth, we went on through
Dwellingup down to Collie stayed two days there at the Premier hotel carried
on feeling refreshed and happy finally arriving at Balingup on the 2nd of
November at 11-00am booked into the Post Office that afternoon rang home and
was told one of our children had an accident could you please come home,
with heavy hearts we left Balingup on the bus at 4-30pm arriving in Perth at
9-00pm that night... end of walk.
But wait there's more !
Having sorted out the family problem we left Perth again for Balingup on the
now 6th of December where we proceeded to carry on where we left off.
7th of December left Balingup walked the next 8 days through some beautiful
country (one of my favourite walks) onto Pemberton arrived in Pemberton
where Margaret was having trouble with her Knee decided to give the walk
away on the 14th of December and come back to Perth for Xmas instead of
Walpole, so ends the adventures of Harry and Margie for this year. Next year
in March its Pemberton to Albany non stop God willing, but who cares we are
having fun.
After that two American friends are coming over in September for an end to
end with us but I won't be telling them this story !
Merry Xmas to all the members.
From Harry R and Margie.

Hi Tony

The same applies to the Avon National Park fire .... apparently
deliberately lit.

Do you have any information on how close it got to Monadnocks/Mt Randall?

Hi All,

The official notice of this fire does not say so, but I saw a report tonight
that the bridge fire may have been deliberately lit.
Words fail me. Such a lovely, tranquil spot.
Apparently a nasty fire, and rather too close to Monadnocks for my liking.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi

Some information from a fire controller at the Avon and Wyalunga National
Park fires on the weekend. This is a direct quote from his posting to the
Geocaching Australia forums at
<http://forum.geocaching.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=1955>.

"Hi all Fire now appears under control with only a small area still
burning. Both parks still closed. AReas worst affected are: Woodsome hill,
Shady hills Medikal hill, Jumperkine hill, Walyunda lookout, Smiths Mill,
Moondyne hill, both sides of Brokman River. Most burning occured North side
of river. Railway access track made life easier on the South side. As most
are aware the is very limited access to many places on the Nth side of
river. Another fire was burning further up river at Avon Park. I have not
been able to access info this far up as my area of ops was Walyunga. I will
post info as it comes to hand. This one may have been deliberate."

In an earlier posting Oznaturist indicated "The fire has burnt from South
of the Walyunga lookout both sides of the river throught to Avon Park and
Beyond Bald Hill."

Looks like some planned walks will be on hold for a year or two :-(

Hi Andrew, yes I remember you were a 'local'.

We were in the Kaimanawa Forest Park. Went in off Clements Mill Rd which
is off the Napier-Taupo Rd. From there an easy walk into Cascade Hut,
then a long (11hr) walk out down the Kaipo Valley and out past the site
of the Te Iringa Hut, which was burnt down a few years ago now.
