Hi Andrew,

I would like to ask if I could stop receiving emails from Aushiker. Although
the information in the emails is very informative and useful, due to work I
am unable to do much hiking anymore!!
Thanks for your appreciation
Natalie

Hi Paul

John's note suggests the fire was stopped at the Darkin River, which has a
substantive road as fire break. Also the area to the west of the Darken
River (below Beraking) was controlled burned a couple of years ago.
Assuming John's information is pretty accurate, there is a reasonable
chance that at least Beraking is okay as it is east of the Darkin River.

Unfortunately have no information at present on the situation north of the
Weir and thus Helena and Waalegh other than early reports this morning the
fire was burning in the Helena Valley. Both Helena and Waalegh overlook
the valley. IIRC the Waalegh side is relatively light on for fuel and the
Helena side has some Wandoo areas which have little fuel on the ground.

Fingers crossed.

Andrew

The Bib Track Foundation just sent a message that suggested Waalegh and
Beraking have been burned since they are within the fires boundaries
and that Helena was in danger as the fire front was only a few kms
away. Let's hope the fires avoided the huts.

Sorry Paul, no details at the moment. I am posting what information I get
as it comes to hand. I have yet to plot the detail on a map to see if the
huts are in the fire area or outside of it.

Thanks Andrew for your reports on the fire.
I intend/intended to walk from Kalamunda to Collie starting on the 31st Jan
but depending on the track being open might have to start from Collie
instead, or even go further down south.
One way or the other I'll be walking from the 31st somewhere along the track
have 20 days spare to walk I'm easy.

Hi

As posted January 17, 2005 @ 3:26 PM:

"Having just spent all night in the area I can tell you that an area from
Mt dale thru to Canning road and beyond has been burnt out. I was driven
back even this morning by wild fire on Ashendon rd. The fire was mainly on
the Nth side of Dale rd but had spotted over in a few areas. The only cache
which may have been impacted on is the one behind bartons mill. The fire
front is currently around 40km. Another arson one Munda Biddy is also closed."

As posted 18 January 05 10:10 am

"Want the good news. Sorry there is none. This fire has now swung North, it
has crossed the Helena river South of Mundaring Weir and is travelling N/E.
I am on again tonight so should be able to get a current map of the
affected areas."

G'day

The Bibbulmun Track on MAP 1 between Helena Campsite and Sullivan Rock is
now CLOSED due to the threat of the current wildfire.

Day walks are still possible from Kalamunda to Helena Campsite and from
Sullivan Rock southward. There is no alternative route! Walkers already in
this vicinity may be approached by CALM staff currently in the area.

A Special Luna Palace Request

It is not the norm for us to send out two e-mails in a week, but these are
unusual times. Osborne Park Hospital is a collection point for a number of
containers being sent to Sri Lanka to assist in the relief effort for
earthquake and tsunami victims. Luna Palace have arranged to forward
donations of the following goods to Osborne Park Hospital:

Canned foods
Kithchen utensils (non breakable)
Plasticware (plates, buckets, cups etc)
Tents
Medicated soaps, creams etc
Sanitation (napkins etc)
Clean towels and blankets
Sterile bandages

The crate leaves Tuesday 11th January, so if you are able to donate any of
the above by Monday 10th January, please feel free to drop them at Cinema
Paradiso, Luna Leederville or the Astor (sorry, Luna on SX do not have the
space to store donations). We ask that donations of loose items are left
in boxes or bags (so we can load them!). Another crate will also be leaving
the following week for Aceh with items from the Osborne park Hospital
collection point.

Many thanks,

The Luna Palace Crew

Hi Andrew and others who replied to my C-toC query.
Thanks for the useful information.
Mainpeak have an information night about the track coming up soon and I will
try to go to that.
The reason for my interest in the flatness of the sites was that I was
considering a new tarptent that needs a flat site to pitch properly. Am now
moving away from that approach.
And speaking of tents, I was in Mountain Designs yesterday and was told that
they have a new range of their own-brand tents coming out this year,
possibly in time for Easter.
Mike Wood may care to comment on the timing, but anyone thinking of a new
tent may care to wait a bit longer.

Cheers, Tony.

A couple of comments. This is not an official campsite and the damage from
campers has been quite extensive. There is a small clearing but
unfortunately people have decided to extend this clearing, flattening
vegetation. Also as Paul points out there is no dunny, meaning a very
significant climb out of the valley to get away from the creek.

They are there. Just inland and up the hill a bit. IIRC not visible from
the track or was that Mt Duckworth?

No problems with dunny paper for me there, but not a nice camping spot
anyway.

G'Day Rich,

Kangaroos are around at night in the south - especially at night. This
is their feeding time.

I rarely drive at night outside the metropolitan area. The car hire
agency has given you good advice. Travel during the day light hours
8am to 4pm when the roos are resting.

Hi Rich

The RAC (automobile club) provides a strip map, Perth to Albany at
<http://rac.com.au/ecar/files/PerthAlbany070103.pdf> which should answer
your question. The RAC website at <http://rac.com.au> is generally quite
useful.

As to kangaroos, you will find them down south, don't you worry about
that! The worst time in terms of risk of hitting one or two, is at dawn
and dusk with a lower risk at night and minimal during the day.

Regards
Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for the information. It looks interesting
and the conditions are clearly not at all
difficult. I'm looking forward to the opportunity
to look around.

Can you give me an idea of how far it is from
Fremantle to Albany, and how long it takes to
drive there? One of my concerns is that when I
was last in WA, the car hire agency strongly
recommended that I not drive at night, because of
kangeroos. I was in the area of Kwinana, and
never saw any signs of any animals at all.

If I had to guess, I would say that kangeroos are
mostly found north of Perth.

Regards,

Rich Dahlgren

How long is a piece of string? You no meet anyone or you may meet a three
school groups night after night .... :_0

>I am wondering about the availability of water

Limited pretty much to the campsites, particularly in the south coast. You
are strongly recommended to carry at least two litres per day whilst
walking between campsites. Perth Bushwalkers Club for example insists on
two litres per person even in winter. If you are planning on walking in
February and March you should probably be prepared to double that. It is
very hot exposed walking on the south coast. Sorry, but don't be a stupid
dead tourist. We have had one of those already this summer.

>Is camping only permitted in designated areas?

You can free or wild camp.

>Is there a fee for hiking on the Bibbulmun?

No fees.

What model stove is it? Does it use screw on canisters that use the Lindahl
valve? If yes, you can get them freely in Perth. Less so down south.

>Is insect repellent necessary on the Bibbulmun?

Pretty much yes. Depends on the time of year and where you are walking.

See http://www.john.chapman.name/wa-bibwd.html for an idea of temperatures
and rainfall. If you stay in the campsites, there are three sided wooden
floored shelters.

South coast ... it can rain anytime. Take a look at the link above. 20% of
the days in January record rain.

Agree 100% Paul. The same situation applied when I was there in 2002.

Yep :-) Which is why I used it.

Was Boodjidup ever a designated campsite? Could it have been in the
>first edition of the 5 CALM maps? It is certainly well positioned.

Not to my knowledge. I suspect the clearing had something to do with
putting the bridge in.

Hi,

I will be visiting Australia, working in Kwinana
in January, February, and possibly part of March.
While I am in Australia, I would like to hike a
portion of the Bibbulmun Track, preferably one of
the sections near the south coast. I hope to have
a few days in February or March to do this.

I have found some information on the internet,
but there are a few things that I am uncertain
about. If someone could kindly give me some
guidance, I would appreciate the help.

How heavily traveled is the Bibbulmun?

I am wondering about the availability of water
along the Bibbulmun.

Is camping only permitted in designated areas?

Is there a fee for hiking on the Bibbulmun?

I have a Primus butane stove that I am thinking
about bringing along. How can I find out if the
butane canisters available in Australia will fit
my stove?

Is insect repellent necessary on the Bibbulmun?

I am planning to carry a small tarp, rather than
a tent, and sleep in a lightweight down sleeping
bag on a small inflatable mattress. What is the
lowest temperature that I should be prepared for?

From what I can gather, very little rainfall
occurs in Western Australia in February and
March. Should I plan to bring any rain gear?
