Dear Group,

I have returned today from a most frustrating hike on the above Trail.

A friend and I set out on Wednesday 6th July from the Southern Terminus late
in the afternoon and camped at the Prickly Bark Campsite. That night it must
have got down to minus 3 C but we were warm in our bags.

On Thursday we set off for Moitch Campsite but got as far as Neaves Road
when we ran into problems. On the north side of Neaves Rd it was all burnt
out and you could not distinguish between the bare earth and the track and
the markers had disappeared.

We decided to go up Seismic Rd as it intersected the track, but without
success as it was all burnt through there also. The problem was that if we
did get to the camp by following the powerlines about a kilometre away we
could be in all sorts of trouble for the next day to get to Ridges if it was
all burnt out.

We came to the hard decision to return to Prickly Bark and spend a restful
Friday after walking a good 25 ks on the Thursday, and got picked up today.

Thank God we had a mobile phone and we could ring our support and advise
change of plan.

The track markers are not very good and are scarce and set up high, well
above eye level.

Where there are track markers, treat them with a degree of mistrust as they
are not that accurate regarding a turn to the right or left.

We did spend a bit of time searching around for markers when we did not see
one for a while, which meant going back to the last one and look to the left
or right.

One marker next to a private property close to the Prickly Bark Campsite
points straight ahead when you are on a cleared strip of SAND alongside the
boundary fence, but you have to turn right into the bush.

We found this out after walking a good ½ a k down the very deep soft sand
cleared strip.

Overall, the track from the Southern Terminus to the campsite and to Neaves
Road is hard to pick out at times because it is hardly used going by the
Register in the Campsite.

This year, only one visit in March and last year about 5 visits. There could
have been more but the people may not have signed into the Register.

Prickly Bark Campsite is a lovely camp and it was a pleasure to have it for
three nights to ourselves.

I can now sympathise with Andrew when he dragged the Carrix over the sandy
terrain with a flat wheel. I think he said that if he could have found a bin
big enough on the track, the Carrix would have had a new home.

Cheers all

Ralph

Stefan Glowacz - 28th June at Mainpeak Osborne Park

[]

Stefan Glowacz evening - Tuesday 28th June. At Mainpeak Osborne Park
In 2001 Stefan Glowacz became the first climber to tick the routes known in
Europe as the classic "Alpine Trilogy". These routes became well known as
the ‘big three’ due to their length and the high grade climbing throughout
and are considered by many to be the hardest Alpine rock routes in the
world. As well as being super technical, these long routes, established
with a ground up ethic of bolts placed on lead, are no ‘soft touch’ often
featuring their sustained hard climbing. Of the three only Stefans’ own
route KAISERS NEU KLEIDER 8b+ / 5.14a remains unrepeated. Join us for a
Mainpeak exclusive when Stefan Glowacz hosts an unforgettable evening on
the world of climbing.
Follow the links for <http://www.mainpeak.com.au/stefan2.pdf>more
information on the evening (PDF) or for

Speaker's series - Storytelling

It was a dark and stormy night. Around the campfire that night there was an
eerie silence, a hush like a thick blanket of fog, a cold, deepwater
silence of expectation. Tonight, there would be a story growing like a
river from the small streams of imagination, passing down the boisterous
and raucous rapids to the tranquillity of the sea. From spinning a yarn to
telling a fantasy, to just keeping the recount of how you nearly died today
interesting, learn the art of storytelling.

Hi Andrew,

Many thanks for those Larapinta links. Most interesting.

The report of the 2002 walk is an odd one. They seem to average at best
2km an hour, and sometimes 1km/hr. Perhaps it's a reflection of their
apparent dependence on tinned food, but even a recognised slowcoach like
me can do better than that. (Grin). They certainly put in some very long
days and suffered badly from blisters.

Await with interest your comments after you return. Have a really great
walk!

Cheers,

Tony

John Chapman has a new book coming out soon on the Larapinta Trail. Keep an
eye on <http://www.john.chapman.name/nt-walk.html>. Also see
<http://www.nt.gov.au/ipe/pwcnt/index.cfm?attributes.fuseaction=open_page&page_i\

which provide a series of PDF files giving A4 maps and notes on each
section. Lone Dingo Adventures have a FAQ on the track at
<http://www.lonedingo.com.au/faq.htm>. John and Lyn Daly aslo have a book
coming out. See <http://www.takeawalk.com.au/LarapintaTrail.htm>.

For a personal reflection on walking the trail, see
<http://www.austintek.com/larapinta_2002/larapinta.html>.

For our walk we are flying in on the Saturday and then we are heading out
to Redbank Gorge on the Sunday. We are using Alice Wanderer
<http://www.alicewanderer.com.au/larapinta.php> to transport us to Redbank
Gorge and to do our food drops. The over the next fifteen days we are
walking back to Alice Springs. To make it a bit easier, we have three food
drops planned. Should be good.

Was actually quite good ... we didn't get any serious rain.

Dear Group

Below is are the details for my next walk under the auspices of the Perth
Bushwalkers Club. The walk is planned for August 19 - 21, 2005.

This is an all on track two day + one evening walk on the Bibbulmun Track.
However, it will be a little different in that it will be shared walk/event
with some local geocachers and therefore will involve some geocaching. See
<http://www.geocaching.com/>http://www.geocaching.com for more info on
geocaching. If you have a GPSr bring it along! The plan is to head off
Friday evening, then completing a car shuffle, before walking about 2.5 km
into Monadnocks Campsite. On Saturday morning, breakfast will be had on Mt
Randall before breaking camp to climb Mt Cuthbert and Mt Vincent. Saturday
night will be Mt Cooke Campsite. On Sunday we climb Mt Cooke before heading
off to Nerang campsite and then out to the cars. Andrew rates this as a
easy-medium backpack. Please contact Andrew at
<mailto:Andrew@...>andrew@... (preferred) to register
your interest. Please get in early as numbers will be limited.

Interested Club members and non-members should contact me to register your
interest.

Regards
Andrew

Andrew.
As a matter of fact the last few walks I have been doing have been off the
track but didn't want to make it to public in case its illegal, knowing the
present state government with its endless new laws it probably is.
Of course I use a fuel stove and am very careful with the environment and
follow the rules of sensible bushwalking.
I have a very good tent ( MSR 2 person Hubba Hubba) for Margaret and myself,
but my body is wearing out, the results of to much military service and
manual civvy labor but I'm not complaining I'll be there in September, in
the meantime I'm catching up on some book reading.
Good luck mate, on your NT walk.

There don't seem to be many personal reports on the walk available on
the Net (as distinct from commercial operators advertising their
expensive trips).
Would welcome any pointers to any you may have seen.
Don't envy you the weekend walk. I went to a BT maintenance seminar at

Mind you, we were better off than the crowd of mountain bikers churning
through the bush. They looked very cold and unhappy indeed.

Cheers,

Tony

Thanks for that Andrew. After receiving Harry's email I looked at
the map: staying in the canoe shed may be the preferred option. I
didn't want to miss out on the scenery by walking too fast.

I wasn't planning to carry my tent (just a bivvy bag) so camping on
The Showgrounds may be a bit exposed for July.

camp either at the canoe shed or in the showgrounds. You may have to take
some water with you, but you get a better balance of walking over the two
days. Boat Harbour is a great spot ... take some time to enjoy.

Have fun.

Couldn't let this one pass :-) Just did a Friday night to Sunday walk on

with luxury huts to hang out in ... tents in the rain for us :-)

You need to get off that Track Harry and check out some of the other
walking around the place :-)

Oh, BTW also off soon for 16 days walking in the NT.

The Torbay Inlet crossing is subject to how much rain there has been in the week
or month beforehand. After talking to a few walkers who have crossed it recently
I can suggest the following.

a) Maybe you can find a surfer who will lend you his board to put your pack on.
b) Sometimes it can be shallower if you walk out into the surf.
c) Other times it can be shallower if you walk about 150m upstream to where its
quite a bit wider and the water has not gouged a deep channel.

Remember the tip to find the best crossing point first without having your pack
on your pack.

Its getting pretty wet and cold at the moment, so be prepared.

   G'day Walkers,

I'm about to head off for a bit more Bib Track walking - Walpole to
Albany. I haven't walked that section before. I've read what there
is in the Southern Guidebook but I'd be interested in personal
   experiences on this section.

   In particular,

   1. the beach sections, any boggy dunes to slow me down?
   2. Giants to Peaceful Bay is only 25km so possibility to double hut.
The guidebook points out that this coastal section is one of the most
picturesque areas and while I'm not in a hurry a day up my sleeve may
be useful if I'm waylaid (discussing benefits of the Trangia Vs the
gas options). Camera or the boots?
   3. is the ferry/hire boat across to Nullaki easy to organise?

One day I'm going to go bushwalking without the need to be at the end
of the walk at a particular time.

   Thanks in advance,

   Paul

Thanks Harry. I wondered why I hadn't seen a post from you for a while.

I hope you have a complete recovery for your September walk,

G'Day Paul.
I've walked this section numerous times in the last few years. Yes, there is
plenty of sand dunes but nothing that can't be overcome, Giants to Rame Head
to Peaceful Bay can be done in one hit quite easily its virtually all
downhill from Giants to the beach.
If for the first time if the weather is good I'd probably stay the night at
Rame Head then on to Peaceful Bay you can keep going and sleep in the boat
shed after paddling across the inlet.
the rest of the way is okay you can maybe score a lift around the inlet at
Denmark and walk through to Nullaki in one hour from the road then continue
on the way to West Cape Howe, you can buy gas bottles at Denmark make sure
the inlet can be crossed at Torbay ask the bloke at the caravan park or look
up the Calm site lots of other options on this walk, but have to go just
opened the door to visitors sorry.
Glad to see other people like walking in winter. Me? I've occured two
injuries one to my back and one to my foot have to rest till end to end in
September don't realise how lucky you are till you get a nagging problem its
torture staying home.
Good luck and good health Mate.

Hi

For those interested, BackpackGearTest.org has completed the following
product tests during May, 2005. These tests are undertaken for no monetary
gain by BackpackGearTest.org and are undertaken in the field by backpackers
(hikers, trampers, bushwalkers) normally over a six month period . The
tester, upon completing the reporting requirements gets to keep the gear at
the end of the test.

Just click on the link to be taken to the test reports.

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone knows about any proposed burnoffs along the
track from Mt Cook to Gringer Creek this weekend (4-5th June)? The
CALM website says there are some planned in Autumn but i'm not sure
if they have already been done. I'm going walking with a few friends
for the long w/end. Haven't hiked this section yet as last time I
planned it the bushfires went through and burnt the huts down.
Hopefully this time I won't be stopped by prescribed burns!

Cheers,
Ryan B.

Just to let everyone know that the sand bar at the Denmark Inlet is
due to be opened on 3rd June. The level of water in the inlet is
very high for this time of the year due to heavy autumn rains.

This means that for about the next 6 months, walkers wishing to
cross between Nullaki Peninsula and Denmark will not be able to walk
across the inlet opening at Ocean Beach.

The options to cross will be:-

a) To use Denmark Dingy Hire to get you across.
b) To get vehicle transport via Eden road.
c) To walk via Eden Road which is around 25-30km.
d) Helicopter if you can find one.

Hi all

Just want to REadvertise a trip that I posted here a few months ago.

The Grand Traverse to K2 and Snow Lake in Pakistan is one of the finest
mountain treks there is.

It's in closing stages so if anyone is interested, can take the time off
work and is up for a mind blowing experience, please look into it and
give it some serious thought.

http://www.fieldtouring.com/expeditions/grandtraverse.html

its being organized by a WA based company and was initially a private
itinerary for me but we've opened it to public and currently we are
party of 4 with some members from the US joining us in Islamabad.

For those of you who are interested, feel free to email Dave from Field
Touring Alpine at dave@... or myself on
jeelana@...

Other happy trekking to everyone here

Jeelan
