Dear All

The following press release from CALM maybe of interest.

Regards
Andrew

"One of Western Australia's most spectacular tourism drawcards,
Karijini National Park, has been re-mapped using state-of-the-art
technology that will prove invaluable for emergency management
planning and the tourism sector.

Environment Minister Judy Edwards said the new map and digital data
CD incorporated the latest technology and high-resolution satellite
imagery to highlight cultural features such as buildings, roads,
mining infrastructure, dams and bores, terrain, major tourist sites,
areas of risk and emergency response information.

"It also provides important information related to vegetation density
to assist with fire management," Dr Edwards said.

"State and Federal emergency management and mapping agencies worked
together with industry and landholders to produce this valuable tool."

The Minister said the visitor safety components of the Karijini
National Park map originated out of meetings held in Karratha between
CALM regional officers and Geoscience Australia mapping staff.

"CALM's detailed local knowledge of Karijini provided tremendous
assistance to Geoscience Australia mapping staff who were updating
maps and information that was more than 18 years old," she said.

"This included removing features that no longer existed, making
changes to existing features and adding new ones.

"CALM regional staff also identified the need for the new map product
to contain detailed safety information for more than 100,000 tourists
who visit the park each year, with the same information being of
tremendous value to all emergency managers involved in potential
search and rescue operations.

"Karijini National Park is one of the jewels in WA's tourism crown.
But its famous gorges, waterfalls and swimming holes can mask an
unforgiving environment that can prove extremely dangerous to visitors.

"This new map focuses on the needs of emergency management and will
set the direction for mapping in the future."

Copies of the map are available for $10 from the Karijini Visitors
Centre, Karratha Newsagency and CALM offices."

Hello Group,

I have had a response from CALM Yanchep and they will have the Ranger fix up
the damage at the above campsite and thanked the group for alerting them to
the problem. Also CALM has approved the expenditure of supplying the huts
with a rake, long handled broom and secure register box. This is for the
Coastal Plain Walk Trail.

Best

Ralph

Cheers everyone for the help,

I'm not that fussed about ticks, a lighter gets rid of them. Once again this
email system has proven to be great and useful.

Thanks everyone.

Hi Paul,

I led the way most of the time and Amber did some leading. John just
followed us, sometimes in the middle or as tail end Charlie.

That theory of yours crossed my mind also.

As you say "The joys of trailblazing".

Actually, the worst job of leading in the morning is fighting the cobwebs.

Cheers

G'day Ralph,

I led the way most of the time and my friend who followed did not get
infested. Was your mate at the rear or up front on your walk? I
have a theory the person up the front cops most of the ticks.

Ah, the price of being a trail-blazer : )

Hi Ralph
I have checked my maps and there are only two caches nearby but not
really on our way.
We may be able to stop after the walk and do them, I have given Brian
and Maree this web site address, so I hope he joins in.

Hi Ralph,

I walked the Coastal Plains Track over Easter a few years back
(before the Prickly Bark extension) and came home covered in ticks!

Can't remember about the flies but it was hot.

Give it go Sean! Should be nice now with the flowers.

Hello Sean,

I just got back from Prickly Bark yesterday and the flies were terrible. One
really needed a Bee Honey Robber face net to avoid their face crawling
antics, so I would leave it for a little while till the fly season is over.

You will need to obtain a map kit from CALM for $4.95 which shows the route.
Title is " Wild about Walking. Yanchep National Park and beyond featuring
the Coastal Plain Walk Trail" There are two maps in the plastic bag. I got
mine from the Kensington office. I was unable to walk the whole Trail as it
was burnt out and markers were destroyed by fire. CALM advise that the Trail
is now open with the Trail properly marked. You can start at Yanchep
National Park or the Southern Terminus on Cooper Rd near Bullsbrook. There
are four campsites along the Trail, Prickly Bark, Moitch, Ridges and
Shapcotts. Allow at least three days to do the trip. The campsites feature a
three sided hikers hut ( same as on the Bibbulmun) water tank, campsites and
bush toilet (Long drop style). It is not a busy trail so you will not
encounter accommodation problems. (Hope I have not put a curse on it). I
have never met anyone one the trail.

One piece of advice. DO NOT USE A CARRIX.

A Mr. A .Priest did just that with a flat tyre and he did not enjoy the
experience. Maybe Andrew will expand on his experience if he reads this.

The terrain is relatively easy as far as gradient goes but it is pretty well
all sand.

Cheers

Ralph

We will be leaving a car at each end and so will involve some time

It looks like about a 15 klm walk with a climb of about 100 mtrs up a

So far we have 4 people walking but more are welcome, this means you

Dear All

A bit slow coming, but I have uploaded a few photos from our recent
Perth Bushwalkers Club walk at West Cape Howe. We drove down Friday
night to Shelley Beach where camped overnight. On Saturday we walk
via the Bibbulmun Track, another walk track and 4WD drive tracks out
to Dunsky Beach and then on to West Cape Howe itself where we watched
some abseiling happening (not for me!) before heading on to our
overnight campsite, the Bibbulmun Track campsite, West Cape Howe.
Also took the time out on the Saturday to pick up a couple of
Geocaches -

Track Reviver "Torbay sounds Like sorbet !". A walk of approximately
30 km (19 miles) on mainly sand tracks.

On the Sunday, the rain set in so some group members headed back to
Shelley Beach via the Bibbulmun Track whereas others diverted to Lake William.

A few dugites where sighted over the weekend. A few wines were shared
around the camp table (no fires allowed at West Cape Howe) and all up
a well led walk by Alan.

The photos can be found at http://aushiker.com -> Walks Diary (West

Tonks,

I would suggest that you contact the Bibbulmun Office as they are probably
the best bet to know if any E2E will be around that vicinity. Email them or
ring them on (08) 9481 0551 friends@...

Potential walkers sometimes contact the Bib office for information and let
them know their travel details.

Cheers

Ralph

Hi All
I wanted to try something new tonight with the plan to see if it would
be suitable for camp food,

I took
a sandwich size zip lock bag and added
3 TBL spoon of plain couscous
shake of powdered cayenne pepper
shake of oregano
1 TBL of parmesan cheese

then boiled the kettle and added to the bag
1 TBL spoon of hot water and mixed well
then I wrapped the bag in a towel and let stand for a few minutes,

I then served from the bag onto my plate and ate, it could have done
with some salt and there was enough for 2 people but the flavour was
good and would be easy to prepare before hand and carry in with you.
enjoy

Hi

For those interested, BackpackGearTest.org has completed the
following product tests during September 2005. These tests are
undertaken for no monetary gain by BackpackGearTest.org and are
undertaken in the field by backpackers (hikers, trampers,
bushwalkers) normally over a six month period . The tester, upon
completing the reporting requirements gets to keep the gear at the
end of the test.

Just click on the link to be taken to the test reports.

I am running the "dress rehearsal" of Bibbulmun South this weekend. Its a
freeby for friends, industry people etc.

At the last minute, due to commitments 2 people have pulled out.

If anyone wants to come down to Denmark this weekend, for a contribution
towards food costs you can be part of this walk.

The Bib track from Hills Forest Discovery Centre through to Dale Rd,
is now open, to quote the The Bibbulmun Track web site,

"Perth Hills Bush Fire - Track Reopened

The Bibbulmun Track after January 2005 Fires has now been reopened.

The section from the Hills Forest Discovery Centre through to Dale Rd,
which was closed due to the bushfire which was deliberately lit on
Saturday 15 January 2005, has been reopened. The original Beraking
campsite is now open however it does not have a shelter. It has a
water tank, table and toilet only. For more information please click
here to check the Track conditions."

Back again Drew,

There is a website produced by Roger Caffin, from New South Wales and it has
a lot of useful information. I used it extensively when researching what
gear to purchase.

Roger writes for Wild Magazine, a national publication and he is a gear
tester like Andrew and myself, and he writes for a NSW Bushwalking Club.

Go to this site and enjoy:-

Hi Rosemary,

Snowgum will be re-opening somewhere in the city, though I do not know when,
(they did say only after a couple of months) They are also planning to open
another couple of stores down the track. They are no longer affiliated with
the Scouts. I will let you know if I hear more.

Has Snowgum reopened? If so where is it?

I tried the old store under scouts headquaters about 6 weeks ago and
got a real shock to find it was shut and had only scouting and very
limited stuff when I looked thru the doors.

I rang scouts and was told that they planned to reopen but where and
when they didn't know.

Shame really I quite liked snowgum and being an exscouter I liked the
idea of helping the organisation in that small way.

Hi Drew,

The best suggestion that I can make if you do not wish to join a bushwalking
club is to contact The Bibbulmun Foundation 1st Floor Mountain Designs
Adventure Building 862 Hay St.862 Hay St .Perth. Ph. 9481 0551

Email: friends@...

Website: www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au <http://www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au/>

You can become a member for $40 per year and get all the help you want. They
also organize a calendar of events where there different guided walks that
will give you a feel for the bush and safety issues then you can launch out
on your own.

A reputable camping shop will help with your requirements, such as Mountain
Designs, Main Peak, Snowgum and Paddy Pallin. They value their reputation so
you will not be given a "bum steer". There are the next grade of quality
equipment from places such as The Great Outdoors in Vic. Park, the Ranger
Stores and Camping World stores. The latter are good if you have a limited
budget but some of their gear does tend to be a tad on the heavy side. (I am
thinking of hauling it on ones back) .

Get out there and enjoy the bush and the wonderful wildflowers that are out
now.

Cheers

Ralph
