I was just hiking this section from Dwellingup down to Swamp Oak by myself on
the Saturday. A beautiful hike. What waste, what sort of moron would do that!!
Mind you, my initial impression of this stretch of the Bibbulmun was that there
was a lot of ravaged hillside thanks to overlogging. Heard some interesting wild
boar stories from the nearby Newbliss winery folk in Dwellingup. Anyone else
encounter wild boar down south?

More news:

Got this from the Bibbulmun Track Foundation:

The Bibbulmun Track from Dwellingup to the Harvey-Quindanning Road
has been closed until further notice. A bush fire was spotted at
9.15am on Sunday morning burning on private property in the blue gum
plantation and is believed to have been deliberately lit.

  From CALM:

By 6am this morning it had burned out an area of 1750Ha of Lane Poole
Reserve along the Murray River approx 20km south of the Dwellingup
townsite. The terrain is steep and the fuel load is heavy.

The ground suppression effort comprised more than 100 CALM and Forest
Products personnel with the assistance of the Shire of Murray and
Waroona, volunteer bush fire brigades and Emergency services. Six
water bombers have also been brought in.

People in the Lane Poole Reserve and on the Bibbulmun Track were
evacuated yesterday. The reserve and Track is now closed to all
public access. All access roads into the reserve have been closed.

We are unsure at this stage if any campsites have been lost although
initial reports suggest that the fire is close to Murray Campsite.

The website will be updated as soon as information comes to hand.

Our thoughts are with those fighting the fire at the moment.

Regards
Andrew

More details. From FESA:

Dwellingup bush fire - Issued: Monday, 23 January 2006 5:10 PM

The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) has advised
residents in the area between 10kms north of Waroona to Cookernup,
south of Yarloop to be prepared to evacuate or stay and defend their
property in the event that the bushfire burning in State forest and
Lane Poole Reserve heads closer.

The deliberately lit bushfire has jumped Nanga Road and is heading
east towards Samson Brook Dam. CALM, SES and the WA Police are
evacuating people staying in the Waroona Dam Caravan Park.

There is now a strong prediction that the fire will emerge from the
forest area into private property on the Darling escarpment sometime
this evening. CALM is advising people to be ready or take action now
and prepare to leave before night fall in the event that the fire
continues to head that way.

Fire crews from the CALM, Fire and Emergency Services Authority and
local bush fire brigades are continuing to try and contain the fire
on the western and northern sides. Fire behaviour has escalated in a
westerly direction through rehabilitated areas following bauxite mining.

CALM Fire State Duty Officer Terry Maher said the eastern side of the
fire remained contained with the assistance of heavy machinery and
water bombing aircraft.

Mr Maher said that fire crews were currently undertaking edging burns
near Logue Brook road to try to contain that front of the fire.

"There are 160 fire crew and incident control officers working on the
bushfire and fresh crews will be bought in for fore-fighting
overnight," he said.

Mr Maher said the deliberately lit bushfire began early yesterday
morning and has involved a mammoth fire-fighting effort involving
CALM, Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), the Shire of
Murray and Waroona bushfire brigades. Assistance has also been
provided by WA Police, State Emergency Services, WA Plantation
Resources and Alcoa.

CALM is continuing to work towards having the bushfire contained
within the next 24 hours.
Lane Poole Reserve and roads that are closed in the area will remain
closed until further notice.

The State Emergency Response Plan has been implemented to ensure the
protection of the community. There is no immediate threat to private
property from the bushfire.

CALM has urged people driving in the area to take care due to the
heavy smoke. It is anticipated that the bushfire may cause some haze
in Perth metropolitan area. People with health conditions exacerbated
by smoke are asked to follow the advice of their health practitioner.

Andrew

Hi

From CALM press release - January 20, 2006.

Visitors to the north west of the State are advised that Millstream
Chichester National Park will remain closed to all vehicles and
visitors due to ongoing flooding caused by Cyclone Clare.

The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) advises
people traveling in the area that associated rainfall from a second
cyclone in the area, Cyclone Daryl, is likely to cause further
flooding and further road damage over the next few days.

CALM Pilbara Region Manager Ian Walker said visitors also need to be
vigilant in monitoring forecast weather conditions and aware that
rain within the catchment area could cause flash flooding downstream.

Mr Walker said similar conditions and possible closures are expected
for Karijini National Park and possibly Cape Range National Park.

Millstream Chichester National Park will remain closed until further
notice and CALM will continue to keep the public informed about
further closures or precautions required for national park areas
affected by flooding in the wake of the cyclone.

CALM apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.

For further details please contact the CALM's Pilbara Region office
in Karratha on 91431488 or the Karijini Visitors Centre on 9189 8121.

Hi all,

The latest issue of Outdoor magazine has an article on geocaching.

Finally I get an idea of what this mysterious activity involves! It's not
sinister at all.

There's also a piece on mountain biking. At last, a sport for which the prices
of some of the gear makes bushwalking look a positive bargain!

Cheers, Tony

this is an enjoyable walk in winter.

Continuing the tradition of the past three years (?) Andrew will be
again leading a social summer pack carry. This will be an easy walk
of about 6 km up in the Darling Ranges. The plan is to walk in (or if
you prefer ride (MTBs)) along the Munda Biddi Trail to the Dardanup
Campsite. We will head off from Perth mid Saturday afternoon. On
Sunday the opportunity will there to divert to the nearby Oakley Dam
for a swim before retiring to a nearby pub for lunch and
refreshments. As I said, a social backpack! :-) So if you are
interested in walking or bringing along your mountain bike for the
ride please contact Andrew at andrew@... to book a spot.
Andrew rates this walk as easy and good one for anyone interested in
getting a little taste of backpacking.

Subject:: BackpackGearTest.org - Call for Gear Testers
aushiker
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

G'day

This is a blatant plug for BackpackGearTest. We want more Testers to
test FREE gear. Why? Read on.

BackpackGearTest.org is an international volunteer organisation
dedicated to testing gear. It is strictly NON-commercial: there are
NO fees (and no advertising either). The aim is to really test
backpacking (bushwalking, tramping, walking) gear and to report on
that gear for the benefit of other hikers (walkers). These reviews
can be read by anyone at all around the world, for free. If you want
to here Jerry Goller, the founder of BackpackGearTest.org talk about
the program, please visit http://www.wildebeat.net/index.cgi/2005/07/01#E003

We also need more testers due to manufacturer demand as can be seen
from our Outdoor Retailer Show reports which you can find at
http://www.backpackgeartest.org/News/?topic=SummerMarket

So what is involved?

Well, BackpackGearTest.org talks with vendors and persuades them to
put items up for test. These items are advertised and qualified
Testers send in applications. Usually there are three to five copies
of any item, so three to five Testers are chosen. They get the gear,
test it and report to BackpackGearTest.org on it, and then are
allowed to keep the gear. Actually, more and more vendors are now
coming to us to OFFER gear.

In more detail then:

Anyone can become involved. To become a 'qualified Tester' you have
to submit two 'Owner Reviews' (ORs) and have them accepted.
BackpackGearTest.org reviews have to meet certain standards, but
these can be found on the http://www.backpackgeartest.org web site
and the BackpackGearTest.org Editors will help you meet the
standards. The more ORs you write, the better your chances of getting
selected for the big items of gear. The day-to-day traffic about the
tests and reports is on
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BackpackGearTest/ feel free to lurk.
It's free too.

We also have in place a mentor program, where experienced testers are
happy to work hand in hand with folks new to the program.

Once you have had two ORs accepted you are a 'newbie'. This means you
can Field Test one significant bit of gear. Sometimes minor items can
also be tested. The sequence for a Field Test is:

* On receipt of the gear: notify BGT that day.
* Within 7 days: submit an Initial Report: first impressions, without
any field testing.
* Within 2 months: submit a Field Report (FR) based on actual use in the field.
* After 4 months: submit a Long Term Report (LTR) - did it wear out etc.

After this the gear is yours to keep.

Once you have finished one full Test (i.e., submitted the LTR) you
'graduate', and can then apply for multiple items. The purpose of the
slow intro is to ensure that everyone who is given a bit of gear WILL
complete the full Test and WILL write the reports. Before that the
gear belongs to BackpackGearTest.org. That's the deal. In practice,
many experienced Testers may have six or more items under Test at one
time. That's fine, but you do have to write all the reports.

So far I have become involved in testing:

* Wilderness Wear Kosciuszko Socks - In progress.
* Petzl Tikka Plus headlamp - In progress.
* Spectrum Brands Insect Repellents - Completed.
* Sierra Designs Osage Sleeping Bag - Completed.
* Red Ledge Cirrostratus Jacket - Completed.
* MSR Overland Carbon trekking poles - Completed.
* Shock Doctor Ultra 3 Footbeds - Completed.
* Mountain Safety Research (MSR) Missing Link Tent - Completed.
* Watchful Eye Designs O.P. Sak bags - Completed.
* Cascade Designs Therm-A-Rest ProLite 4S Sleeping Pad - Completed.
* Outdoor Research Rocky Mountain Packcloth Gaiters - Completed.
* AntiGravityGear Mamas Kitchen Cookset - Completed.
* Tektite Trek Lithium Flashlight - Completed
* Bite Trail Low Sandals - Completed
* Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone 3800 backpack - Completed.
* Enertia Trail Foods Single Meals - Completed.
* Leatherman Squirt S4 - Completed.
* Red Ledge Voyager Rain Gear - Completed.
* Birdiepal Junior Umbrella - Completed.
* Duray Socks - Completed.

Do these things look interesting? And how! There are some big brand
names included, as well as smaller brands, which are available over the web.

Why do vendors participate? Because BackpackGearTest.org is now way
up on the Google hit list for people searching for info on new gear.
It's becoming a major gear reference site, because unlike the
magazines it is unbiased.

In addition, I get to read about some of the latest gear
developments, including the stuff from the smaller manufacturers. And
especially in the lightweight and ultralightweight areas.

So why am I advertising this?

BackpackGearTest.org needs more Testers for the gear that is being
offered. Many of the current Testers have as much gear as they can
handle (max'ed out), and yet more gear is being offered to
BackpackGearTest.org. As well we are getting more international
manufacturers (e.g., Australian, New Zealand, European and United
Kingdom) interested.

Have a look at the BackpackGearTest.org web site and the Yahoo!
group, and see what you think.

Andrew Priest

Dear Group

Please note that fires are still banned on the Bibbulmun Track from
Kalamunda (MAP 1) through to Brockman Highway (MAP 4). The ban is
place from 1 December 2005 to 31 March 2006. This means that only
fuel stoves can be used at campsites from the northern terminus to
Gregory Brook Campsite. Please do not light any fires whatsoever.
Please also note that because there is a permanent fire ban from Dog
Pool Campsite through to Albany, fires are only permitted from
Brockman Highway to Dog Pool Campsite (Shannon River) on days other
than very high or extreme fire danger.

Andrew

Hi Group

A little trip report. Decided to head out yesterday (Monday) for a
overnight bushwalk combined with some Geocaching in the Mundaring and
Chidlow areas. Parked the 4WD at the recommend parking sport for the
Geocache Wandoo Garden off Yarra Road (in the vicinity of Mt Yetar)
and headed in to find Wandoo Garden. Found that at 6:00 PM. Then
headed off to Mt Billy and the Geocache, Billy's Toy Box. Had to
cross the Helena River but at this time of the year that was not an
issue (just some mud and a few pools of water). This section was only
about 5.5 km, all off track. Camped on the slopes of Mt Billy and
then today headed east to pick up the Geocaching Australia cache,
Blair Witch. This was a combined road/off-track section of about 9
km. Blair Witch is in Flynn block south of Mt Observation. From
Blair Witch I headed west all off-track bar about 500 metres of road
back to the vehicle near Yarra Road. This section was about 9 km.
Good walking with the exception of about 3 km in Flynn block which is
more Jarrah forest than Wandoo with the resultant undergrowth. As
the temperature was starting to bite it was nice to get back to the
car around noon.

The relevant maps are Mundaring & Chidlow 2134-3 & 2134-2 (1:50 000)
and Mount Observation & York 2234-3 & 2234-2 (1:50 000). The
Mundaring & Chidlow map BTW does not name Mt Yetar or Mt Billy which
is disappointing, as both are known features of the area.

Links to the caches can be found at <http://aushiker.com/geocaching.htm>.

I plan to revisit this area for a two day backpack, probably in May
once we have had some rain as a lot of good creeks and of course
Helena River. Also the Wandoo is great to walk through. So if
interested, keep an eye out for a posting here.

Regards
Andrew

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for that, which is a good read. You'll have to put a bit of soap
on that sticking zip!
Strange report from the Texan chappie who sleeps with his torso sticking
out of the sleeping bag (!) You'd wonder why he bothers with a bag at
all.
Look forward to your final report in due course.

Cheers,

Tony

We are going in along the Munda Biddi Trail which is open to both
bikes and walkers. Those that wish to ride, will just ride ahead of
the walkers.

Great to hear Andrew. I have pencilled you both in. Yes we are
camping at the Dardanup campsite on the Munda Biddi. Given the size
of the campsite I reckon you would be pretty safe to leave the tent
at home for this one if you wish.

Hi Ralph,

Many thanks for that. Had a read of your initial report as well
(interesting that other reviewers had the same trouble with the alleged
compressed size).
Seems like it might be a goer in many respects. I particularly like the
ability to enlarge the top of the bag, as I hate to be constricted that
way.
I had a look at a Softie some time ago and was impressed by the silky
"feel" of it.
I can sympathise re the zip snagging. I managed to snag the zip on my
down bag some time ago and, short of cutting the fabric (which I don't
want to do), can't see any way to get it un-snagged.

Look forward to seeing your later reports,

Cheers, Tony Dyson

Priest 0428 570631
