Dear Group

FYI, Bibbulmun Track Foundation is advising that "CALM will soon be
conducting burns that will impact the Bibbulmun Track at two places.

DMJ013 in Beavis Block (page 71 in the Southern Guidebook) will be
burnt as soon as conditions are right to do so. The Bibbulmun Track
will be closed and diverted at Palings Road and at Lease Road. The
diversion will take the Bibbulmun Track along Palings Road and
Scatter Road and Lease Road to join up with the Bibbulmun Track at
the Lease Road bridge across the Donnelly River.

DP 037 Gloucester National Park (page 99 in the Southern Guidebook)
will be burnt as soon as conditions are right. The Bibbulmun Track
will be closed at the junction of Bibbulmun Track and Burma Road and
at the junction of Bibbulmun Track and Gloucester Road. The diversion
will be located along Burma Road and Gloucester Road."

Dear All

Latest update on the Bibbulmun Track - Dwellingup fire from the
Bibbulmun Track Foundation/ CALM.

"The Bibbulmun Track remains closed from the Old Nanga town site
campsite in the north to the Harvey Quindanning Road in the south.

A section of the Bibbulmun Track from 2kms south of Dookanelly
campsite to 5kms south of the Murray campsite, has been affected
severely by the very hot fire. Although the fire started very close
to Dookanelly campsite and spread toward Murray Campsite, both
campsites have saved.

Police have called for anyone near Lemercier Road (just south of
Dookanelly Campsite about the time the fire started (9am Sunday) to
phone them immediately.

A total of 9184 hectares have been burnt. A full damage assessment
will be completed soon and the relevant detailed posted here. We are
unsure whether the Track can be re-opened or a diversion needed.

Updated 9.10am Monday 30 Jan."

Regards
Andrew

Harry,

Ref your Cape to Cape walk.

I'd be very much interested to hear from which end you intend to start, and
whether it would be possible to accompany you on this walk ?

Eddy.

I'm going from Pemberton to Albany in early March then going across to do
the Cape to Cape then going back to Pemberton to Kalamunda or till we get
sick of it. So it could be a couple of months out there, I don't know, don't
care really.
Might see someone from the group out there.

Hi Andrew,

Yes, I seem to have been lying low lately. However, I am getting back
into things.

I've taken over the BT section from Sullivan Rock to Mt Cooke campsite.
Walked in last Monday with the retiring volunteer, who is a mere 81 and
set a cracking pace! We were accompanied by two 8-year-old boys who had
never been in the bush before. Quite entertaining really. A big
grasshopper landed on one of the lads, and from his screams I thought
for a horrible moment that he'd been bitten by a death adder!

I had thought about that walk, especially as I considered it to be a
sensible length (grin). But am I right to recall that you changed the
date from the original Feb. 18-19?

BTW, I am revving myself up to answer your call for Backpacker Gear
testers, but does it mean I have to learn how to upload photos? Might
come into the old dogs, new tricks category.

Cheers, Tony

Hi

  From the Bibbulmun Track Foundation:

"Whilst bush fire warnings have been downgraded, the Bibbulmun Track
remains closed from Dwellingup in the north to the Harvey Quindanning
Road in the south.

A section of the Bibbulmun Track from 2kms south of Dookanelly
campsite to 5kms south of the Murray campsite, has been affected by
the fire. As far as can be ascertained Dookanelly campsite has been
saved and the fire did not reach the Murray campsite. However, the
area could still be affected by changes as fuels dry over the next few days.

Walkers are strongly advised to remain clear of the section of Track
from Dwellingup all the way through to Collie. Harvey-Quindanning
Road is being used for emergency services vehicles and walkers should
avoid the entire area.

Note: Track walkers refer to CALM's Bibbulmun Track Map 2 Dwellingup,
closure of track between points in the north reference 412000mE
6380000mN and the south reference 432000mE 6347000mN.

Police have called for anyone near the Murray River near Lemercier
Road (just south of Dookanelly Campsite) about the time the fire
started (9am Sunday) to phone them immediately.

A total of 9184 hectares have been burnt. A full damage assessment
will begin on Thursday."

Hi Group

The following has come in this morning from the Bibbulmun Track Foundation:

The Bibbulmun Track from Dwellingup to Harvey-Quindanning Road is still
closed until further notice.

The following information is from CALM as at 9am Wednesday morning and
includes a map of the fire.

Bushfire warnings downgraded

Bushfire warnings for the townships of Waroona, Yarloop and Hamel have
been downgraded and the towns are not considered under threat.

Respite was brought to the fire suppression operations by a
south-westerly wind change yesterday afternoon, which brought rainfall
across the fire ground. The rains significantly assisted the fire
suppression efforts and enabled crews to launch a direct attack on the
un-constructed northern boundary containment line. In the now slippery
conditions, crews are now working with machinery constructing the
boundary. Although the warnings have been downgraded, the fire area
could still be affected by unpredictable weather patterns caused by
ex-cyclone Darryl. Communities and property owners should look out for
updates and warnings, which will be re-instated if necessary. Southwest
Highway is open.

Lane Poole Reserve, and the roads leading into it, is still closed and
will be until Sunday 29 January. The reserve will be assessed for
damage, obstructions and dangerous overhead trees before it will be
re-opened to the public.

Fire fighting efforts

At the present about 120 fire crew and incident control officers from
CALM, FESA and Local Bush Fire Brigades are continuing to work the 82km
fire boundary.

Future developments

The current priority is to secure the un-constructed boundary
containment line along the northern edge of the fire. Mild fire
behaviour is expected over the next couple of days. Close monitoring of
the fire and an extensive mop up of the area will be carried out over
the next week. Weather conditions caused by the deterioration of
ex-tropical cyclone Darryl will also be closely monitored. A
rehabilitation plan for the burnt area will be developed.

Damage and losses

A total of 9184 hectares have been burnt and there is a confirmed loss
of an open iron shed and some damage to apiary sites in the area. There
have also been unconfirmed reports of damage to Alcoa mining equipment.
A follow up assessment of the total damage caused will begin on
Thursday.

Road closures

Southwest Highway was re-opened yesterday afternoon, but all access
roads into and around the Lane Poole Reserve and Willowdale areas are
closed.

Drivers are asked to drive slowly, with caution, in smoky conditions
with their headlights on.

Recreation site closures

Lane Poole Reserve is closed to all public access until at least Sunday
29 January. During this time some facilities are being assessed for
damage, obstructions and dangerous overhead trees before being re-opened
to the public.

No campsite or day use access in Lane Poole Reserve until further
notice. Please contact CALM Dwellingup (phone: 9538 0000) for
alternative recreation sites.

The Bibbulmun Track is closed from Dwellingup in the north to the Harvey
Quindanning Road in the south.

The Munda Biddi Trail is closed from Dwellingup to Logue Brook Dam Road,
including the Waterous Loop Trail.

Regards
Andrew

Hi

As the subject line indicates, Mainpeak's Subiaco lease is coming to
a end, so their store in Subiaco is moving out after many years -
Mainpeak Subiaco operations will move to our new store at Osborne
Park. In the meantime there are
<http://www.mainpeak.com.au/sale.aspx>bargains galore.

There is a minimum of 20% off all stock and there are heaps of 50%
off deals. Plus crazy prices of end of line and discontinued products

Saturday 28th January will be the last of trade.

It seems that the Dwellingup fire started in the blue gum plantation
just south of Dookanelly Campsite in Lane Poole Reserve to private
property north east of Yarloop.

Wonder if Dookanelly campsite is okay.

I was just hiking this section from Dwellingup down to Swamp Oak by myself on
the Saturday. A beautiful hike. What waste, what sort of moron would do that!!
Mind you, my initial impression of this stretch of the Bibbulmun was that there
was a lot of ravaged hillside thanks to overlogging. Heard some interesting wild

More news:

Got this from the Bibbulmun Track Foundation:

The Bibbulmun Track from Dwellingup to the Harvey-Quindanning Road
has been closed until further notice. A bush fire was spotted at
9.15am on Sunday morning burning on private property in the blue gum
plantation and is believed to have been deliberately lit.

  From CALM:

By 6am this morning it had burned out an area of 1750Ha of Lane Poole
Reserve along the Murray River approx 20km south of the Dwellingup
townsite. The terrain is steep and the fuel load is heavy.

The ground suppression effort comprised more than 100 CALM and Forest
Products personnel with the assistance of the Shire of Murray and
Waroona, volunteer bush fire brigades and Emergency services. Six
water bombers have also been brought in.

People in the Lane Poole Reserve and on the Bibbulmun Track were
evacuated yesterday. The reserve and Track is now closed to all
public access. All access roads into the reserve have been closed.

We are unsure at this stage if any campsites have been lost although
initial reports suggest that the fire is close to Murray Campsite.

The website will be updated as soon as information comes to hand.

Our thoughts are with those fighting the fire at the moment.

Regards
Andrew

More details. From FESA:

Dwellingup bush fire - Issued: Monday, 23 January 2006 5:10 PM

The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) has advised
residents in the area between 10kms north of Waroona to Cookernup,
south of Yarloop to be prepared to evacuate or stay and defend their
property in the event that the bushfire burning in State forest and
Lane Poole Reserve heads closer.

The deliberately lit bushfire has jumped Nanga Road and is heading
east towards Samson Brook Dam. CALM, SES and the WA Police are
evacuating people staying in the Waroona Dam Caravan Park.

There is now a strong prediction that the fire will emerge from the
forest area into private property on the Darling escarpment sometime
this evening. CALM is advising people to be ready or take action now
and prepare to leave before night fall in the event that the fire
continues to head that way.

Fire crews from the CALM, Fire and Emergency Services Authority and
local bush fire brigades are continuing to try and contain the fire
on the western and northern sides. Fire behaviour has escalated in a
westerly direction through rehabilitated areas following bauxite mining.

CALM Fire State Duty Officer Terry Maher said the eastern side of the
fire remained contained with the assistance of heavy machinery and
water bombing aircraft.

Mr Maher said that fire crews were currently undertaking edging burns
near Logue Brook road to try to contain that front of the fire.

"There are 160 fire crew and incident control officers working on the
bushfire and fresh crews will be bought in for fore-fighting
overnight," he said.

Mr Maher said the deliberately lit bushfire began early yesterday
morning and has involved a mammoth fire-fighting effort involving
CALM, Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), the Shire of
Murray and Waroona bushfire brigades. Assistance has also been
provided by WA Police, State Emergency Services, WA Plantation
Resources and Alcoa.

CALM is continuing to work towards having the bushfire contained
within the next 24 hours.
Lane Poole Reserve and roads that are closed in the area will remain
closed until further notice.

The State Emergency Response Plan has been implemented to ensure the
protection of the community. There is no immediate threat to private
property from the bushfire.

CALM has urged people driving in the area to take care due to the
heavy smoke. It is anticipated that the bushfire may cause some haze
in Perth metropolitan area. People with health conditions exacerbated
by smoke are asked to follow the advice of their health practitioner.

Andrew

Hi

From CALM press release - January 20, 2006.

Visitors to the north west of the State are advised that Millstream
Chichester National Park will remain closed to all vehicles and
visitors due to ongoing flooding caused by Cyclone Clare.

The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) advises
people traveling in the area that associated rainfall from a second
cyclone in the area, Cyclone Daryl, is likely to cause further
flooding and further road damage over the next few days.

CALM Pilbara Region Manager Ian Walker said visitors also need to be
vigilant in monitoring forecast weather conditions and aware that
rain within the catchment area could cause flash flooding downstream.

Mr Walker said similar conditions and possible closures are expected
for Karijini National Park and possibly Cape Range National Park.

Millstream Chichester National Park will remain closed until further
notice and CALM will continue to keep the public informed about
further closures or precautions required for national park areas
affected by flooding in the wake of the cyclone.

CALM apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.

For further details please contact the CALM's Pilbara Region office
in Karratha on 91431488 or the Karijini Visitors Centre on 9189 8121.

Hi all,

The latest issue of Outdoor magazine has an article on geocaching.

Finally I get an idea of what this mysterious activity involves! It's not
sinister at all.

There's also a piece on mountain biking. At last, a sport for which the prices
of some of the gear makes bushwalking look a positive bargain!

Cheers, Tony

Hi

Mention to make this post early in the week, but forgot. Anyway
dropped in at Moitich campsite on the Coastal Plains Walk Trail on
Sunday to hide a Geocache nearby
<http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d03991da-6537-4642-bd9d-\

Anyway things look good out there, CALM have addressed the water
supply problems, installing a 1500 litre tank. Going by the camp
register seems no one had been there since September. Pity really as
this is an enjoyable walk in winter.

Andrew

Dear All

Due to scheduling issues with the Perth Bushwalkers Club, the date of
this walk has been changed to February 4 - 5, 2006. I thought I had
posted this change of date notice, but Ralph suggests otherwise. My
apologies for any inconvenience.

FEBRUARY 4- 5, 2006 SHAKE OUT THOSE COBWEBS AT DARDANUP - Andrew
Priest 0428 570631

Continuing the tradition of the past three years (?) Andrew will be
again leading a social summer pack carry. This will be an easy walk
of about 6 km up in the Darling Ranges. The plan is to walk in (or if
you prefer ride (MTBs)) along the Munda Biddi Trail to the Dardanup
Campsite. We will head off from Perth mid Saturday afternoon. On
Sunday the opportunity will there to divert to the nearby Oakley Dam
for a swim before retiring to a nearby pub for lunch and
refreshments. As I said, a social backpack! :-) So if you are
interested in walking or bringing along your mountain bike for the
ride please contact Andrew at andrew@... to book a spot.
Andrew rates this walk as easy and good one for anyone interested in
getting a little taste of backpacking.
