Subject: [Aushiker] NOTICE: UPCOMING WALKS
Hi
I will be leading the following weekend walk on March 22 - 23, 2003 under
the auspices of the Perth Bushwalkers Club. If you are a Club member and
interested in coming on this walk, please email me to express your
interest. If you are not a Club member, but are interested in this walk,
please email me directly to discuss your options.
The walk description as it will be published in the March Venturer is as
follows:
TUMLO-DRIVER EXPLORER 37 + 310
This medium paced weekend backpack will be a predominately off-track
exploration of the Mount Keats - Murray River - Tumlo Hill sections of the
Tumlo and Driver forestry blocks east of Waroona. Overnight accommodation
will be at the five star Bibbulmun Track campsite, Dookanelly. This walk,
as the title suggests, is an exploration of the area. No reconnaissance of
the proposed walk will be done before hand, therefore, interested walkers
should have some off-track walking experience, should be comfortable with
an exploratory approach to walking, and be prepared for possible river
crossings and hopefully a view or two. An early start from Perth is
anticipated with an early to mid evening return on the Sunday. The group
size will be limited to eight. To express your interest, please email
Andrew at andrew@<Remove 12345>aushiker.com.
Also I have two other walks pencilled in on the Perth Bushwalkers Club
program. They are:
April 18 - 20, 2003 (Easter). Murray Valley Circuit. This is a three-day,
on-track walk following the Murray Valley Circuit, Dwellingup. It will be
a medium paced, small group walk, camping in tents and will involve at
least one swim of the Murray River (subject to rain). Approximately 46 km.
May 31 - June 1, 2003 (Foundation Day weekend). White Horse Hills. It is
envisioned that this will be a two day, mixed on-off track walk, with the
Saturday night spent at the White Horse campsite on the Bibbulmun
Track. It is envisaged that this will be a mixture of track and off-track
walking on the first day and will an emphasis on track walking on the
second day. It will be a walk suitable for folks with some, but limited
pack-carry experience. Details to be finalised at a later date, however, I
expect the distance to be around the 32 - 36 km mark over the weekend.
If you are interested in either of these two walks, again please email to
discuss.
Regards
Andrew

Hi Roger
"Soon" is a rather arbitrarily concept in CALM's books :-) As I understood
it, the initial planned release date, was late in 2002, but no guidebook
and no 1:50 000 maps. I am sorry, but I do not have anymore up to date
information.
I suggest you contact Annie Keating at CALM's Bibbulmun Track office. The
email address is bibtrack@.... Please let us know the response
if you do contact her.

Do you know if a new Bibbulmun book for the southern half is due out soon ?
I have the latest book for the Northern half that came out last year but was

Hi
This is a blatant post in your interest :-) BackpackGearTest.org has just
had a very successful "visit" to the Winter Outdoor Retailer's show in the USA.
The outcome is:
* Around 35 companies that were definite a definite YES to testing with
BackpackGearTest.
* Almost all the companies are planning on testing at least 2 pieces of
gear. Many are offering 3 or more.
* Almost all the tests are for 5 items.
* 35 x 2 x 5 is 350 pieces of gear to test in the next few months!
The other big news is that the US manufacturers making winter gear are VERY
keen to test in the southern hemisphere before they release the gear to the
US winter market.
To put this in context, BackpackGearTest.org currently has around 30 items
of gear in test (150 pieces), so this is a big jump. This is SERIOUS gear
testing including leading manufacturers as well as innovative small
manufacturers. Testers test the gear over a six month period, writing
three reports (Initial, Field (after 60 days) and Long-Term (6 months). At
the end of test, the tester keeps the gear.
To become a tester, you need to write two owner's reviews on gear that you
own and use. These reviews (as do your reports) have to be to an
acceptable standard. This is NOT some easy way to get some free gear, there
is a "commitment" required.
NO MONEY is involved; you don't pay, BackpackGearTest.org does not pay and
the manufacturers don't pay.
BackpackGearTest.org can be found at http://backpackgeartest.org. Form
details on how to become a gear tester can be found at
http://www.backpackgeartest.org/lesson.php?lesson=BecomeTester&page=1.

Hi
Conservation and Land Management (CALM) have released details of the draft
boundaries for the proposed Boyndaminup National Park near Lake Muir east
of Manjimup for public comment.
Dr Edwards (Minister for Environment and Heritage) said the creation of the
new national park would reserve extensive tracts of old-growth forest in
the Boyndaminup, Mindanup and Challar State forest blocks.
"The proposed park will extend over approximately 4,820 ha, of which
3,140ha - or 65 per cent of the total area - is old-growth, with most of
the rest being woodlands and sedgelands," she said.
"The draft boundaries also take in around 3,830ha that are on the interim
list of the National Estate."
The Minister said scattered patches of old-growth forest in Challar and
Mindanup blocks that were not included in the proposed park would be set
aside from timber harvesting in informal reserves.
A map showing the proposed boundaries is available from the Department of
Conservation and Land Management's website, NatureBase, at
http://www.naturebase.net/national_parks/draft_boundaries_newparks.html but
they don't include details of the Boyndaminup National Park!
Cheers

Hi
Details of the Department of Conservation and Land Management’s LANDSCOPE
Expeditions program for 2003 have been released. This year’s nature-based
tourism and research program will again take scientists and their volunteer
helpers to far-flung parts of the State on a variety of important
conservation projects, where they can ‘expect the unexpected.’ The
expeditions are run by the Department in association with UWA Extension at
The University of Western Australia. Typically of nine days’ duration, they
attract people of all ages with a common interest in the State’s natural
heritage.
This year, volunteers can sign up to work alongside scientists in remote
areas such as the Montebello Islands, the Gibson Desert, the Murchison, the
Kimberley coast and Shark Bay World Heritage Area – to mention five of the
seven planned expeditions.
Further details at http://www.naturebase.net/tourism/lsexpeditions/index.html

Hi
For those interested, the folks at BackpackGearTest.org (BGT) have recently
completed six months testing of Cedar Tree's Packa. This is a sort of
combination poncho/pack cover which the manufacture, calls the Packa. You
can find out more and the reports at:
http://www.backpackgeartest.org/thepacka/
Testing at BGT is undertaken by "ordinary" backpackers (hikers, trampers,
bushwalkers, ramblers) in the US and Internationally. BGT is always open
for people interested in getting involved in gear testing. You can find
out more by reading "How to Become a Tester" at
http://www.backpackgeartest.org/lesson.php?lesson=BecomeTester&page=1

G'day all,
I have a friend at work here who is interested to know if any of the rivers in
the South West have "houseboating" facilities. Not just rivers where you can
take a boat but where there may be established boats that can be hired for a
day/ weekend or longer. From the point of hiring the boat can be taken along
the river and brought to shore if people wanted to have a walk in the area.
I guess the scenario I am looking at would be something like on the Murray in
Vict/NSW where there are plenty of boats and paddle steamers.
Any information, or where to get it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Nothing like news as it happens. Third email from CALM today, now indicates
greater damage from the fire than initially thought and hence a longer
section of the Track closed. This email should be read inconjunction with
the information from Mike Woods.
The official line from CALM is:
"Due to a bushfire in the Monadnocks Conservation Park, a 40km section of
the Track from just north of Monadnocks Campsite (Section 9) through to
Gringer Creek Campsite (Section 12). The fire burnt out two campsites - Mt
Cooke and Nerang. It is likely that the section will remain closed until
the end of summer. Walkers can divert from Randall Rd (Section 9) out to
the Albany Highway and rejoin the Track where it crosses! the Highway just
to the north of North Bannister (Section 12). This diversion along the
Albany Highway is approx. 40km. [it will be actually around 45 kms -
Aushiker]."

Hi Andrew,
I've just spoken to Annie Keating who heads up the Track & Trail Unit at
CALM and she's hopeful that the Track will be open again soon - albiet with
some temporary campsites. New campsites should be in place for winter but
she'll obviously have to make an assessment of the damage before we can get
any real idea. Sounds like it was a huge fire, 15000 hectares burnt out and
a 85 kilometer perimeter - those CALM guys who stand in front of these
things are pretty amazing!
Cheers,

Hi All
Conservation and Land Management (CALM) have advised this morning (January
13, 2003) that the bushfire in the Monadnocks Conservation Park has
destroyed the campsites at Mt Cooke and Nerang on the Bibbulmun Track.
It is anticipated that the section of the track, between Millars Log Road
(section 10) and Pike Road (section 11) will remain closed for the
remainder of the summer.
