My bivy has a zipper problem...would you know where I could get it
looked at and/or fixed? Seems to be the puller thing...not the zip
itself....someone suggested a tailor or drycleaner do zip repairs..but
Im not confident.

Hi Alex,

Great news about the DR, I will be ordering one myself this year, so good to
hear that you are a fan.

Wouldn't mind catching up to take a look or get some photos from you if you
are in Perth.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Andrew

I bought a Double Rainbow with sewn in floor, weighs 1108g, very easy
to erect [ I could put it up after a few goes in about 3 minutes]. A
bit more tricky in sand but it stayed up fine when anchored by river
stones. it rained one night but not a great deal and I didn't get wet
at all. I was too hot in my sleeping bag and had to sleep under it
and on my sleeping sheet on two nights [ outside temp at a guess < 5
deg C].
I have taken some photos but they're currently in my mates camera
[ who took > 700 photos - some people don't understand the meaning of
moderation].
The seam sealing was straight forwards [ bought a small tube of clear
silicone sealer from the local hardware store and diluted it as per
instructions] The only thing was the first few times I unpacked it
the seams adhered slightly to each other. The lines on the floor did
work to prevent slippage.
I ordered it in late January - it arrived in May [ but I did say I
didn't need it till June - they had a lot of production problems but
kept in contact by email and were very easy to deal with]. It arrived
in perfect condition.
I took it for a short trial to Monadnocks before going away- the
problem there was condensation on the inside as the humidity was
higher than on the Larapinta. I suspect I'll need to buy the optional
liner at some stage.
It was also by far and away the coolest tent on the trip and proved
to be a very successful bit of gear one-upmanship [kidding]
I'm very happy with it.

Hi Alex
So do tell more,
what tarp tent did you buy?
what was it like?
did it rain? did you get wet?
Did you take any photos?
How did you go with the seam sealing?
Did you lay any silicone down on the floor to stop slippage?
Did it take long to get here?
Did it arrive in good condition?
Sorry for the amount of questions but it looks such a good shelter.

I picked up my copy today and after a quick cursory look through it I found
one glaring error because I have one.

On page 90 there is a brief write up of the Princeton Tec Apex headlamp with
a photo. The photo is not the Apex. There is a photo of the Apex on page 31.
The one on page 90 would appear to be the Yukon model.

Anyway, I am not going to let the odd glaring errors spoil my delectation in
reading up on all of the mouth-watering gear.

Yes, Roger is in Europe tramping around the border of Spain and France I
think.

Anyway, here is a link to his FAQ re: fabrics:

http://www.bushwalking.org.au/FAQ/FAQ_DIY.htm#Fabric

It gives some outlets here and in the US.

Maybe Mike Wood can help also as he sells silnylon products or as an
afterthought, Sea to Summit in East Perth.

Cheers

Hi Tony

Are you looking for product or material? If material, Roger is probably the
best to ask, but he is in Europe I think at the moment.

On the subject of SilNylon, is there anywhere in Perth you can buy it?
Or over east, perhaps? I'd get it from the US, but the shipping costs are
out of all proportion to the weight/value of the order.

Hi Both
I have asked Rodger before and I have asked in the US. The best and
cheapest place to get silnylon is speers and at about us$4.25/yard and
I forget what postage is. But I have searched and searched and there
is no where in Australia you can get it.

Tony,

Do you want to purchase it as a lineal length from a roll or as a product in

What style of meal?

I will have to check out Cargills as I am off for 5 days in a few weeks
to
do the Coastal Plain Trail and test some gear.

What utter nonsense, SilNylon is too thin and weak. Obviously he has
never
been in a tent made of it in the real bush. Had no problems with the
floor
getting a puncture. Anyway, one can always put down a footprint for
extra
protection.

Not a good advertisement for a salesperson selling camping gear to a

Indeed, Outdoor is a worry.

In the last edition, the cover headlines trumpeted the "Best 100 walks in
Australia". The article inside was about the 60 best walks. Dunno what
happened to the missing 40!

LOL ... Should write to them and ask! :-)

Proofreading was a noble art, now sadly replaced by the spellchecker, which
is a useful tool but it does NOT check for logic.

Well their spellchecker isn't up to scratch either ... Seems they don't know
whole to spell rogaine. I am also wondering now if they get out of the
office at all!

I picked up a copy of their sister publication, Australian Mountain Bike. It
adopts a similar format. Will be interesting to see what the editing is
like.

Andrew

Hi Ralph,

Hey, I seem to remember that it WAS part of the subscription deal last
year. Cheeky buggers.

I tried to email them about it, but I got bounced from a site in London,
oddly enough for some technical reason. I'll just have to buy it. Oh, I
REALLY need more gear! (Not).

Cheers, Tony

On the subject of buying gear, I made the mistake of dropping in on my
favourite (not) local outdoor shop today because it is accessible on the
flatbar.

Mountain Designs needs to put in D bars for locking bikes up then I would
have an excuse to go to the city instead ... You hearing me Mike? [LOL]

I was told people don't buy sinlyon products because they are too thin and
weak and therefore they don't stock them blah blah. What was worst, the guy
believed what he was saying! Should have walked out the door then ... Anyway
they had one thing (out of the three I wanted).

Oh Ralph, I got a packet of Backcountry Ralph with a free spork :-). Maybe
Cargills have the same deal at the moment.

Anyway I got home, jumped online and looked for an Aussie online retailer.
Found one and found I paid about 63% too much for the item I brought (ouch).
While there I ordered a couple of other things. Hopefully the stuff should
arrive mid-week.

Oh Mike Woods has a short article in the latest issue of Outdoor as well.

Regards
Andrew

Good point Ralph. Interesting that in the bicycling world, Bicycling
Australia (different publisher) includes their annual gear guide in the
magazine subscription.

As a follow on.

Should you subscribe to Outdoor Australia, the Gear Guide is not part of the
subscription so it will not be turning up in the mail.

Cheers

G'day

For those interested the Winter 2007 Outdoor Gear Guide is now out as
well
as the latest issue of Outdoor. Took me less than five minutes to find
the
first typo in the magazine ... :-( I see they also managed to put a
photo
of the Larapinta Trail in the last issue as a Tasmania photo! For a mag
that comes out what every two months, that is not a good look IMO.

Regards
Andrew

Will be interesting to see what the editing is
like.

Andrew

G'day

I don't think either of these sites has been mentioned before but thought
there might be some interest. They are designed to allow for the creation of
routes using Google maps.

Bikely.com is for bicycling and Stepwhere.com is for walking.

I think they are limited at present in-terms of interaction with GPSr units
and OziExplorer but still may be of interest.

One think I like is that you can get elevation profiles for routes.

Andrew

Be part of Australia's biggest active workplace event on 17 October 2007.
Thousands of regular and first-time riders from all states and territories
will join the inaugural National Ride to Work Day.

Over 22 000 riders are expected to register for the event, with breakfast
events in most city centres, over 70 regional breakfasts and thousands of
workplace breakfasts around Australia. ABC Local Radio is the official radio
partner in city and regional areas.

This is your opportunity to have a real impact on global warming and reap
the health benefits of getting active. Research has shown that 34% of
first-time riders participating in last year's national pilot event were
still riding five months later. Ride to Work Day really works!
